Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Radial tire and 15" black steel trailer wheel with a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern.

by:

I purchased four (4) Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tires with 15" Black Steel Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range D. I wanted to replace the (split rim) wheels and tires on my vintage (1964) Airstream Overlander. I wanted something that could appear like it was "period appropriate" for the model and year, and yet provide all the safety and reliability of modern wheels/tires. I did a lot of research. Lucky for me, etrailer.com had what appeared to be the right product at the right price.

My wheels and tires arrived at my door, quickly. I was able to manually remove the old wheels/tires and install the new ones in a couple hours. I did it without help and using available tools. I'm not a mechanic, but it didn't take me long. If you can change a tire, you likely can do this! I'd have to say the whole purchase and DIY installation went extremely well. I could not be happier with the service and products etrailer.com provided. I'll attach a pic, showing the old and new wheels; and, I'll include a picture of the final product.

I've had great experiences with etrailer.com and I'm happy to pass the word. Now, all I need is the right wheel covers, maybe baby moons? Thanks George!

Great selection of wheels, with or without tires, even for hard to find older models! Replaced old split rims with properly matched new equipment.

Arrived I. Good condition

Delivered right on time!

by:

We ordered this tire/ wheel combo and it showed up next day! Great customer service.

by:

It will work as a spare, but not in regular use. It has three nubs for hubcap mounting whereas my stock wheels have 4, and the diameter is slightly different so the hubcaps won't fit. 1983 Wrangler 2 horse trailer

I googled search for trainler spare for Coleman 17B RV trailer and etrailer come up with the exact tire / rim that i needed.
Easy order and correct specifications for my Coleman 17B trailer. I received in prompt time with no issues. I matched it with my trailer and it fits perfect.
Thanks,

Used them on a boat trailer for the first time today and it didn’t last 10 miles and blew one of the tires. The rim was shot as soon as o noticed. Have had them in my trailer stored until now. Maybe had them 2 months. Would not recommend these tires if they are going to blow like this. Glad the pieces of tire also runnier my boats paint! Great time! Thanks for selling trash tire and rim packages! Out $XXX and stranded on the side of the road……..

by:

Great tires for my 19’ Tahoe , I installed these tires when I picked up my boat in Gettysburg Pa and trailered it all the way to South Jersey without any issues . I used the trailer every other weekend to the Jersey shore and at this time have been great !! The one thing I do is remove the new tires during winter storage and place the old rims and tires on the trailer for storage in the winter weather to help with the life of these new ones !

by:

I couldn’t be happier with the wheels/tires I purchased. The galvanized finish is nice and shiny. They almost look polished. The tires felt great. Nice and smooth while towing up to 80mph. Had no issues at all on my trip. Huge thank you to Brent J who helped me purchase them, and provided excellent customer service.

Bought these to replace the small 5.30-12 tires that were on a small pop up camper I bought. Flipped the axle and added these for extra height. They arrived very quickly. I was shocked at how fast i received these wheels….roughly 48 hours after Purchase. The price and quality is unbeatable. Super happy with how everything turned out. Thanks etrailer!

  • Could ST225/75R15 Fit on 1956 Spartan Trailer
We have no way of looking up what your 1956 Spartan would have came with so you'd have to verify that by checking the wheel bolt pattern and current tire size. If what you have is 225/75-15 mounted on a wheel with a 6 lug bolt pattern the part # AM32575 would work.

  • Recommended Tire and Wheel Replacement for a 1954 Spartan Trailer With 6 Lug Wheels
From what I could find out about the 1954 Spartan Trailer line, it does look like they used the 6 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern for their 15 inch wheels. That being said, this should be verified before finalizing anything. 6 Bolts are pretty easy to verify though and you will just need to measure from the center of one lug hole to the center of the lug hole directly across from it. This should get you exactly 5 1/2 inches. If that checks out, the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with...

For your 1974 Airstream Argosy travel trailer with dual axles, I recommend the ST225/75/R15 size for your trailer as that is what most often is used as a replacement on your vintage airstream from my research with a 6 on 5-1/2 inch Bolt pattern. If you want the classic look I recommend the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Steel Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range D # AM32575 which has a load capacity of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi and a max speed rating of 81 mph. • Does Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with Wheel Use Acorn or Ball Lug Nuts
The trailer wheel part # AM32575 that you referenced is designed to be used with acorn lug nuts and not ball style. The part # KALN1375S would work great as this is the correct size, taper, and since it's a solid stainless steel lug nut you wouldn't have to worry about them swelling.

  • Rim and Tire Replacement for 1951 Spartan Spartanette
The closest match we have to what you need is the Karrier Wheel and Tire part # AM32575 which is a conventional 15 inch trailer wheel that has the 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern you need and a radial ST225/75R15 tire size. The pilot diameter of this is 3.65 inches which it sounds like you have/need.

The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Steel Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range D # AM32575 is a conventional 15 inch trailer wheel that has the 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern you need and a radial ST225/75R15 tire size. I recommend going with # AKIHUB-655-6-EZ-K which fit the Timbrens and are for the EZ Lube spindles.ve The hubs have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern so the tire and wheel combo I recommend is part # AM32575.
