Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • ST205/75R15 Trailer Tire and Black Wheel With 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern and Center Cap
We can definitely get your trailer a more sleek look, although there is not a black center cap for the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR C # AM32238B you asked about, because this wheel has a 3.19" pilot hole diameter, and the only black center caps fit a much larger 4.9" pilot diameter. Because that size of pilot diameter is only available on 8-lug wheels and not the 5-lug wheel you need, there is the option of getting a black wheel...

  • Recommended Tire Size Compatible with Timbren HD 3500-lbs Axle-less Suspension System
I'll start off by saying that wheels and tires do not come with hubs, and what hubs you'll be able to use depend on the spindles on the axles, and whether or not you'll want brakes on the trailer or not. If you're going to be using the Timbren # TASR35HDS07, you'll need hubs that have # 25580 inner bearing and # 15123 outer bearings, like the # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K for a hub and drum assembly or # AKIHUB-655-6-EZ-K for idler hubs. If you're going with the hub and drum so you can add brakes,...

  • Available Trailer Wheels, Tires and Pre-Mounted Wheel-and-Tire Combinations
The trailer wheel-with-tire products we offer are limited to those that our suppliers supply pre-mounted. Not every possible combination of wheel and tire is available this way; the most popular combinations are what our suppliers choose to offer together. If you do not see your preferred wheel and tire offered pre-mounted you can still use these by having a local tire shop mount them together for you. Trailer tires do not have to be dynamically balanced on a machine the way passenger...

  • Wheel and Tire Recommendation for Use with Timbren Trailer Axles # A20RS545
When you install the Timbren Trailer Axles # A20RS545 you will end up having a distance of 4-7/8 inches from the hub face to the trailer frame. The rim width of the # TTWAS15B45BM is 5 inches. When you add an additional 1 for the lip of the wheel and then divide that by two you end up with 3 inches of backspacing. I went out into our warehouse and grabbed a # AM32238B to measure from the mounting surface of the wheel to the furthest point out on the tire and it measured 3-13/16 inches...

  • Tire/Wheel Combination Recommendation For Utility Trailer
When the # TTWTRTM2057515C tire and # AM20545 wheel are ordered, the tire is not mounted on the wheel. You can have a local garage or tire shop mount it for you. If you are looking for a tire/wheel combo that would be very similar to the wheel and tire you mentioned I recommend the Kenda Karrier combo, part # AM32238B. This is a Load Range C radial tire on a 15 inch Black mod wheel and it has a 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern. To find the right hub for your trailer you will need to know...

  • Do Trailer Wheel And Tire Combinations Come Pre-Balanced
Our trailer wheel and tire combinations like the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR C # AM32238B you were looking at come ready to mount, but are not balanced. Trailer tires in general are not balanced due to the primary function of the tire being to support the load of your trailer, and you will not feel any vibrations caused if the tire is out of balance. If you would prefer the wheel and tires to be balanced you would need to take...

  • Can I Tow More With My Trailer If I Upgrade Tire Class Rating
The first thing you'll want to check is the weight rating of your trailer. This will be stated on your paperwork or on the trailer near the front somewhere. Whatever the GVWR states will be the max weight you can load your trailer. You can upgrade tires, suspension, and axles but the frame itself might not be able to handle more than the GVWR which is why that's the limiting factor. With the options being as limited as they are for the 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern, I do recommend changing to something more common, specifically the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. This is very widely available and it will not only give you more options for wheel design, it will also be significantly easier to replace if ever needed.
