Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Recommend Replacement Tire for Limited Clearance on Mobile Home Axle
The tire size you referenced, 8-14.5 has an overall diameter of 27.7 inches and a width of 8 inches. We do not carry a direct replacement. For a replacement wheel and tire package that will fit the # 8-201-5UC3 and the # 42655UC1 hubs with a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern, we have the Karrier Tire and Wheel, part # AM32664. However this wheel and tire combo has an overall height of 28.4 inches and a width of 8.9 inches. You would need to measure to determine if you will have sufficient clearance. If...

  • Replacement Trailer Tires for 15 Inch Wheels to replace 7.00-15 Tire Size On A 15X5.5 Wheel
The Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire, # AM10244, will fit on a 15x5.5 inch wheel. It has a maximum load rating of 1,820 lbs. at 50 psi and an overall diameter of 27.3 inches. The overall width is 8.1 inches. I would not recommend installing the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire, # AM10256, on a rim width of 5.5 inches. The minimum rim width for that size tire is 6 inches. If you try to squeeze that size tire on a narrower wheel than what is recommended, it will cause the tread...

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire Combo for 1994 Four Winns Boat Trailer
Although the Loadstar Wheel and Tire Combo you referenced, part # AM3S870 would work well for you, had you considered going with the radial equivalent, part # AM32664? Both the bias-ply and the radial are rated at 2,540 lbs per tire. Radial tires generally run cooler, which will lead to longer tire life. For maximum tire life, be sure to keep tires inflated to the maximum psi as recommended by the tire manufacturer, which in the case of these tires is 65psi.

  • Replacement Leaf Spring, Hub, Lift Kit and Wheel Tire for 2001 Keystone Cougar 278EFS
The best option for a trailer leaf spring replacement would be the 4-leaf 4,000 lb axle leaf spring part # e27SR. For a tandem lift kit you'd want the Lippert # RR23QX. For hub drums to convert to a 6 lug wheel you'd want the part # 84656UC3-EZ which is correct for 3,500 lb axles so that you could install a tire and wheel in the size of 225/75R15 Load Range D like the # AM32664.

  • How to Decide Which Tandem Axle Trailer Hanger Kit to Use
Typically when building a tandem axle trailer I recommend using either the # APT3 or # APT5 Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit. These are the most common kits used for utility trailers and parts are readily available. The # APT5 kit is by far the most common because all the hangers are the same height and provide good tire clearance. There are a lot of variables when selecting a hanger kit. First you should select a kit that will accommodate the wheel and tire combination you are using. The...

The standard offset for trailer wheels is zero to keep the load on the trailer centered on the tire. Your 225R-75-15 is approximately 28.3 inches in height and will be 10 millimeters, .39 inches, thinner than the ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire. I would recommend staying with...

If you are wanting to stick with Kenda tires with the ST225/75R15 size then you will need to go with the Load Range E # AM10303. You always want your tires to be rated for at least the same weight as your axles. The Load Range D # AM10256 has a weight rating of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi which means when using 2 of them your max weight is 5,080 lbs. The Load Range E has a weight rating of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi which means that 2 of them have the combined rating of 5,660 lbs making your 5,200 lb...

Yes, the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension - 4" Lift Spindle - Off-Road Tires - 3,500 lbs # ASR35HDS02 can be installed on your Harbor Freight Trailer. The best part about this system is that it fits any frame width and can be bolted or welded on. • Center Pilot Hole on 12 Inch Trailer Wheel with 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern is Too Large for Hubs
All of the 12 inch wheels with 4 on 4 bolt pattern that we carry have a pilot hole that is 2.8 inches or greater. If the wheel bolts have a 60 degree cone (like # RG02-020 as an example) then the bolts will be able to center the wheel on a hub-centric set up like what you have. The 60 degree cone will center at each hole thus centering the wheel. If the bolts are flat like a regular nut, or 90 degree, like # RG02-040, then they will not be able to center the wheel properly. • ST Rated Tire Recommendation for a 6x12 Enclosed Trailer
For a trailer you will want to use tires that are ST rated. P rated,or passenger rated, tires are not designed to carry weight like a trailer does and should not be used on a trailer at all. The sidewalls are constructed differently and will be more prone to blowing out than an ST tire due to excess heat build up. I would recommend you upgrade all of your tires to an ST rated tire such as a Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10256. If you do not have a rim for a spare then you...

I double checked with our Dexstar catalog and the wheel has a maximum capacity of 2830 pounds at 80 psi. The 2540 pound limit at 65psi on the combo is limited by the tire. The # APT3 kit is a good choice for smaller wheel and tire combinations like 14 inch wheel and tire combinations and the # APT5 kit would be a good choice for 15 or 16 inch wheel and tire combinations since it provides a bit more clearance for tire height. For this tire size, I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10256. This is an excellent radial ply tire that features a maximum load of 2,540 pounds at 65 psi.
