Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Jeep Renegade

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk we're gonna take a look at, and show you how to install, the Draw-Tite Max Frame Class III Custom Trailer Hitch Receiver, offering the 2" x 2" receiver tube opening, as part number: 76021.Here's what your hitch is gonna look like installed. As you can see, it's gonna be pretty visible in the rear of the vehicle. We'll have that cross tube that's gonna go all the way across the rear, and then up to where it connects with the frame. In the middle we're gonna have our receiver tube opening. This is a Class III hitch, so it'll have a 2" x 2" receiver tube opening; makes it extremely versatile. I think on the Renegade, probably your bike racks, cargo carriers, accessories like that are what you're gonna see the most of, and just about all of those are gonna come in a Class III variety.

Of course, for your towing needs, there's also several different ball mounts you can choose from. You just want to make sure you get a rise that's gonna accommodate whatever type trailer you're gonna be using. Now, to hold all those accessories in place, you always want to use the larger pin hole. It's located a little bit closer towards the front of the vehicle. It's 5/8" in diameter. See, there's a good amount of room there, so no matter what type of accessory that you choose, as long as it's rated Class III it should work; so your standard hitch pins and clips, locking hitch pins, even anti-rattle devices.

That smaller hole is only gonna be for use with the J-pin stabilization system, which is a form of anti-rattle device, which goes in there and kind of locks everything in position and keeps it from moving around too much. You'll have a plate-style safety chain connection point here. There's gonna be plenty of room, as you can see with a standard trailer hook. It's gonna go in there and connect without too much of an issue. It doesn't really roll around as freely as what they do on some, and you can even go to the larger style clevis hook.

But, behind a Renegade, probably not gonna have a trailer that size to mess with. There is a small tab welded on here with three pre-drilled holes. If you decide to run wiring to the outside of your vehicle this would be a great point for attachment. Part number 18144 would bolt right up to that, give you a nice solid 4-pole holder. However, you do want to keep in mind, typically the wiring is designed to stay in the back of the Renegade, so unless you're gonna come out through the grommet, your wiring's probably gonna be inside the vehicle. Now, the hitch is gonna offer a 675 pound tongue weight rating. That's the maximum downward force we can put in our receiver tube opening.

It also gives us a 4,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That would be the total weight of your trailer and anything you we're to load up on it. It's not been rated for use with weight distribution, so you want to stay away from the spring bars, or the torsion bars. And you definitely want to check the owner's manual to see what the tow rating on the Renegade is, and not exceed that. Now, a few measurements you'll find helpful in selecting your ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier, will be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening; you're gonna have about 11-3/4". With that being said, it would be wise to choose accessories with a raise in the shank to help give you better ground clearance. Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper is gonna be about 5".Now, depending on which model you have, we're working on the Trailhawk model, so we've got a pretty low pan here. We're gonna lower our exhaust just with two bolts. We've got a 13mm bolt here and on the other side. That's gonna come down just an inch or so buys us a little bit of space and it's gonna rest right on this rear panel. Now, if yours doesn't have this panel, it's not gonna rest on there. You'll want to use a support strap further up underneath the vehicle. You can connect to the suspension component, suspension component. Just a cam buckle strap is typically what we use. Now, on that hanger we'll use a 13mm socket, remove that bolt. See how that allows us to rotate this down a little bit. Do the same thing on the other side. Now we're gonna remove a few bolts. We've got one located right here, one just behind it, and then the one that's kind of hidden there behind that bumper. You can see it right here on the bottom. So we've got one on the bottom and then two on the sides. Now, if you don't have a Trailhawk model, these are probably just gonna be rubber plugs that you need to pull, and then you'll bring through your carriage bolt. And to gain access you're gonna drill about a 1" hole right up through there. That'll allow you to get your components up and in the frame. Now, to get these out you want to use a 21mm socket. The instructions do call for the removal of this panel, at least there's a little nylon 10mm nut right here you can remove. I don't think we're gonna need to for our application, but if we do, again, that nut's right up behind there. Now we need to bend the rear edge of the heat shield in a little bit. I'm gonna make a small cut right over here on this corner. We should be able to roll that over. Just like that. That'll give plenty of room for our bracket to sit. We're also gonna trim off this caulking that you see. Now we can head over to the passenger side and we'll repeat that same process there. Now we've got our bracket that we need to make a slight modification to our hitch. Once this is rotated up in position it's gonna sit right along this line, so from those two cut-ins we're just gonna cut straight across right there. This should be what you're left. With when you rotate that up it's not gonna stick out past the end of the frame there. Now, with the help of an extra set of hands, we're gonna get our hitch lifted into position. You'll kind of have to guide this tab up over your exhaust to get it up there to the frame rail where we got it cleaned off. And once we have that in position, we're gonna reuse the bolts we removed. And once we've got four or five good turns on them, you'll just be able to let your hitch rest there while you get your other hardware in place. Now we're ready to go through and we're gonna get all of those fasteners snugged up. Now, your best bet for getting in here is gonna be to pull off that nylon nut we we're talking about. A lot of times you can just them off by hand. And then this one Philips screw right here in the back. And then we should be able to pull that in, pivot both directions there. Now we'll want to start torquing our bolts down. The specifications we want to torque them to will be listed in your instructions, so just check there. We also want to get our exhaust hangers put back up in place, just like that. Now we'll bring our plastic cover. We need to get that back over the stud. Just thread that plastic nut back on. Typically you can just push it in til it stops and that'll be fine. Tuck that up and put our Philips screw in.With our exhaust back in place, that's gonna complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number: 76021, on our 2017 Jeep Renegade.

A little harder to do on your own. Install was about 4 hours. I did have to bend the exhaust heat shield to clear the passenger bottom bracket. I was able to get it back in place afterwards though. 641079

Love my new hitch. Jennifer was great and product arrived in 2 days. Took about 2 hours to install. My 2016 Jeep Renegade Sport had a little different layout than installation video, but we were still able to figure out. Thanks for great customer service and installation instructions. 339079

etrailer.com is my "go to" source whenever I need towing or hitch equipment. I bought a new 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk and needed a Class III hitch and wiring. Even though the original hitch I ordered was unavailable, etrailer substituted a better hitch and got it to me pronto. It was a perfect fit and easy to install. I am very grateful. 196368

Does it look like the factory install, or sit below bumper? Can you send me a picture? Thanks, Chad

Love the product. It's made of heavy duty steel. Definitely took longer than the 40 minutes that they say it would. Also for future customers. My jeep is the trail hawk edition of the 2015 renegade it has its own bolts built into the frame and you don't need to drill the frame or use the ones provided for installation. Overall I'd recommend this to anyone the price was very reasonable. I bought a small boat and can't wait to tow it around. 406195

It was a bit harder to install then what the video shows. You must remove one of the muffler hanger brackets for the hitch to hang. I installed it by myself but wouldn't suggest for anyone to do so, very hard and to heavy for one person. Quality is great and I got it in a few days after I ordered it. 428322

Excellent, fast shipping (two days!); instructional videos were somewhat helpful (wish they had emphasized in the video for the Renegade Trailhawk that you have to remove all of the hard putty (a Dremel is what we used) in order for the hitch receiver to fit; otherwise it won't. The video instructs you to remove some putty, but not all. The reason why it's such a big deal is that when my friend and I were installing it, we only removed enough... based on the video recommendation. And it wasn't enough; we had to remove all of it. But the video (imo) doesn't warn at all that if the receiver doesn't line up with the holes, keep removing putty. We were just assuming that it was a bad fit or defective. It wasn't until we kept removing ALL of it to bare metal... and pushing up to get the hitch receiver to line up with the holes (after removing the bolts), is when we were able to fit the bolts back into the holes and tighten the hitch receiver. Whew! Other than that, we felt it was a fairly easy install (about an hour). Very well built receiver, looks very discrete; and way cheaper than the factory install! Thanks etrailer! 585989

I just finished installing the hitch on my Jeep Renegade. I'm pleased that the directions were pretty clear, and I had no real problems in completing the installation in about three hours. I did not have a lift, instead, raised the vehicle up on jack stands and left the rear tires on. In retrospect it would have been a bit easier with the tires removed. Once the wheel well liners were off everything mentioned in the directions was plainly visible. One note; the directions indicate the use of a one-inch hole saw, but the carriage bolts and spacers are one inch as well, so the bolts/spacers did not easily slip through the access hole. I think if the access holes were 1-1/8" the installations would have been easier. Anyway, the fish wires were really slick, and they were key to successfully installing the bolts into the chassis. I did end up having to cut a 1" x 3" slot in the passenger side wheel well liner to accommodate the hitch structure, but that was pretty minor, and did not detract from the look of the finished installation. Overall, this is a rock-solid, high quality product that I would have rated 5 stars if it weren't for the undersized access holes. One hour installation is a stretch for those of us that don't have a lift. 578290

Excellent product and service! Hitch fit perfectly on my Renegade Latitude - four bolts and on! Did not have to make any modifications - just followed instructions. Plenty of road clearance. Installed myself and took about 45 minutes. I would highly recommend this product!!! 221486

It took me a small while to install, because I don't have a lot of tools or a lift. But i got it done in three hours just laying in my garage, by myself using a car jack to lift the hitch in place. I am super pleased. i would recommend using a dremel to cut the metal vs. a hole saw unless you have a super high speed drill. Thank you! 401116

The hitch itself is well made and fit like a glove, I installed it by myself in the driveway and it was a bit difficult raising into position. I have a new model 2015 vehicle and was surprised a hitch was made for it already. The wiring harness is a different story, not sure why a 12 ga. ground wire is required to be run all the way from the battery to the rear of the vehicle, I was disappointed in the wiring harness difficulty & instructions. I threw the harness in the trash and have the dealership install one for me. 199451

Much more difficult to install then led to believe. Directions very vague, it took 4 people to complete process. It tells you to drop and hang exhaust system , which we did , got hitch up and wires strung thu holes , a bolt on each side to discover muffler was below hitch and could not be brought up. We actually had to disconnect exhaust from front , and with great difficulty , was able to rehang after hitch in place. 397270

I would have give a 5 star rating except that the installation instructions could have been better. If you put this on a Jeep Renegade with tow hooks, no drilling is necessary. A 21mm socket and a breaker bar are needed. But you have to remove the inner splash cover from behind the rear wheels to gain access to the upper bolts after the hitch is in place to tighten the bolts. A great product, great price. I will buy the bike carrier next. 260039

Product arrived 2 days early so that was a nice surprise. Watching the videos on the site before the installation as I never installed a hitch before Was very helpful.. Roughly 2.5 hours for install with the wiring harness also so was a very smooth purchase to installed on vehicle process. Would recommend this hitch. The only negative on this hitch is the ground clearance you will loose. I knew this before purchase so still gets a 5 star. New tires and lift kit is next to get the ground clearance back. 547614

Let's be real, this severely impacts your Renegade's clearance. If you got the Jeep to do 4WD roads well... not any more. This isn't necessarily a flaw of the DrawTiteproduct, but of Jeep's failure of making the Renegade a worthwhile adventure vehicle. The only way to add a hitch without eliminating your clearance if is to spend $1,000+ on an in-bumper hitch. It's a damn racket, I tell you. 504254

This thing is no joke. It's heavy duty and doesn't mess around. I installed it by watching the video and followed along, but this thing is definitely not a one person install. It's possible, but it will take you a long time. I'm very happy with this and will definitely buy more products from this site. 374494

Fantastic trailer hitch. Fit is perfect. I would note two things - first, if you can get access to a lift, do it. If you need to drill, this will be a tremendous help. Second, get help installing this. This would've been a massive PITA had there not been multiple hands working on this. 40 minutes if you've installed this before maybe, took us at a shop about 1 1/2 hours when all was said and done. But once installed, looks great and works perfect. 558148

This is my second hitch from etrailer. Awesome customer service both times. Within hours I had an email saying my hitch was on the way just like the last order. I didn't pay attention when I order that drilling WAS required. I couldn't bring myself to cut holes in the frame of my brand new vehicle so I figured out that if I removed some of the internal bumper nuts (3 on left and 3 right) you can just barely get the hardware inside the frame. No cutting necessary but it did take more time. Total install time was about 4 hours for me. 390135

The hitch is well made with heavy materials and excellent welds. And it fits the car perfectly. The holes even line up once you tweak it in place. It is actually possible to install yourself if you are reasonably adept at that sort of thing. The 30 minutes is a little optimistic, it took me 4 hours. After drilling the 1" holes check to make sure the bolts and washer plates will actually fit through them before fishing your wires though. Mine had to be belt sanded quite a bit. Frustrating after you've spent a good deal of time getting the wires in to have to take it back out thinking the hole is too small. It's not, it's the fasteners. There is also an access door not mentioned in the instructions right behind the rear tire in the inner fender well that can be easily popped off and make getting to the rear screws 1000% easier. At least you can see if the holes line up and move things in the correct direction. I expected pulling the bolts and washers through the frame was going to be a nightmare. Getting the wire where it needed to go was a challenge but once in place the bolt pulled through surprisingly with little effort. Now to tackle the wiring... wish me luck 221860

Well done add on hitch. I used a 1in, ball grinder worked great for inlarging hole in frame rail, it's a definite do loosening the inner fenders real time saver.Hitch fits nice and snug and looks good all so. Going to pull boat and utility trailer the hitch is so well engineered I would have no concerns pulling whatever comes along,as long as the weight limits are respected. 655455

Got mine professionally installed at trailer rental place. It does give up a little ground clearance, but it does the job and does it really well. Was a great price compared to other places I looked. If your car has bolts already in the frame (unlike mine) it should be a really easy install, otherwise you have to drill a hole in your frame to pass through hardware, which should only be done by a professional, unless you're comfortable with that. 621638

Near 20 years ago I tried a cheap hitch and do it yourself install. I didn't fare that well. Needing to be able to haul more material than my Renegade had room for I decided to try putting a hitch on it. There was that bad taste in my mouth from years ago. So, I decided it would not be a fly by night hitch company this time around. After running to the hardware store for a Bosch thin metal 1" hole saw for my drill. It was on like Donkey Kong. I just did each instruction one after another. Then I got to the place where a helping hand would be nice. WOULD BE NICE! Wife was busy. Neighbor disappeared. So, steady working at it. I lifted the hitch from one side to the other one board at a time till it was lined up. Jiggled the bolts with the wires attatched into place and swapped the wires for washers and nuts. As I am toqueing the bolts to spec. my wife asks if she can do anything. Then my neighbor shows up and says he got there at the right time. Slow and easy won the race. I took longer than 40 minutes, but got great results. Now to fix my trailer. LOL 578803

Generally speaking we always steer customers to a 2-inch hitch when one is available since they offer higher capacity and broader compatibility with accessory products. In...

  • Can a Trunk Mount Bike Rack be Used on a 2016 Jeep Renegade
  • We know of 2 trunk mount bike racks that have been tested by the manufacturer and are a confirmed fit for your 2016 Jeep Renegade: Yakima HangOut 2 - # Y02637 Yakima HangOut 3 - # Y02638 If you have a different bike rack then I cannot really vouch for it and I would hesitate to use it on your Renegade. Even though these have been confirmed to fit, if you are still nervous about damage to your spoiler then I recommend installing a trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite # 76021 and then...

  • How Does a Wiring Harness Attach to Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch 76021 on a 2017 Jeep Renegade
  • To utilize the wiring bracket on trailer hitch # 76021 for your 2017 Jeep Renegade you will need mounting bracket # 18144. The hardware is included to mount it. Then you can have the 4-Way mounted in the bracket. The trailer wiring harnesses for the 2017 Jeep Renegade, # 118651 and # C56274, both plug in line with the tail light wiring on the vehicle. They will install the same way as in the 2016 model in the video I have linked. They will work with the above mentioned mounting bracket. In...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Jeep Renegade
  • Yes, the Draw Tite hitch part # 76021 is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Jeep Renegade. This is a 2 inch hitch which means it will have higher capacities and more accessories made for it. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the # 119147KIT. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4...

  • Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Installation on a 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk with Factory Tow Hook
  • Yes, so in the instructions for Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 76021 for your 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk step 2 mentions the factory tow hook. That is the same tow hook that you are describing (rear, driver's side). So on models that have that tow hook you would skip step 3 in the instructions. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop....

  • Wiring for 2015 Jeep Renegade Sport for Lights on Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier
  • If your 2015 Jeep Renegade Sport already has a functioning 4-Way connector then yes, you can use the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76021 along with the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18153, Light Kit # 20174, and Oval Mounting Bracket # 106873 and you are good to go. Should you not have the 4-Way connector I recommend installing the T-One # 118651 which tees in behind your tail lights and comes with a power wire that you run to your battery to power the lights. You can use the...

  • Which Trailer Hitch Receiver Has the Most Ground Clearance on a 2017 Jeep Renegade
  • The trailer hitch receiver that will offer the most ground clearance on your 2017 Jeep Renegade is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76021. This is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver tube opening. When we installed this hitch on a similar 2017 Jeep Renegade (see video) we found that the distance from the ground to the top of the inside edge of the receiver tube is 11-3/4". The distance from the ground to the top of the inside edge of the receiver tube on the Draw-Tite...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2017 Jeep Renegade
  • I would love to help but there would be no way for me to verify that the trailer hitch you are looking at is correct for your 2017 Jeep Renegade. However, I can say that the correct hitch for your Renegade should measure 36" apart on center between the two horizontal bolt holes and 40 apart outside to outside between the two vertical bolt holes. If you take a look at the attached photo you will see what holes on the vehicle that the trailer hitch utilizes that way you can measure to be...

  • How Much Weight can 2016 Jeep Renegade Tow
  • U-Haul trailer size won't be as important as how much weight you would end up towing. You have to stay under the towing capacity of the vehicle. Which according to what I was able to find online would be 2,000 lbs. For a hitch that is confirmed as a fit for your 2016 Jeep Renegade the Draw Tite part # 76021 is a confirmed fit that would work well. Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with...

  • Will the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Reduce Ground Clearance on a 2018 Jeep Renegade
  • The best trailer hitch receiver for your 2018 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76021. The distance from the ground to the bottom of the receiver tube will be around 9-3/4" and will be the most we offer for a trailer hitch in regards to ground clearance. Unfortunately, this hitch will reduce your ground clearance in the rear but it should not be too much of an issue for the exception of steep terrain. There is not a trailer hitch for your Renegade...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2016 Jeep Renegade TrailHawk
  • The Draw-TIte Class III 2 inch Hitch # 76021, which I highly recommend, looks like the install only differs whether you have the tow hooks or not. If you have tow hooks on your TrailHawk, you will have a no drill installation and if you don't have the tow hooks you will need to just drill a 1 inch diameter hole access hole. I have attached the installation directions for this hitch to the page for your convenience. The Draw-Tite hitch will not be required to use a support strap like...

  • Trailer Hitch that Fits 2018 Jeep Renegade
  • For lighter duty vehicles like your 2018 Jeep Renegade the manufacturers won't recommend the vehicle tow anything due to a number of reasons. Sometimes the engine may not have enough power but usually it's related to where the hitch would install on the rear of the vehicle not being strong enough for towing the weight of a trailer. That said, our hitch manufacturers will design hitches for vehicles if there is a demand for them as typically people do what they want with their vehicle...

If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. • Comparison of Class III Trailer Hitches for 2015 Jeep Renegade
  • Both hitches you mentioned, the Draw-Tite # 76021 and the Curt # C13269 have slightly different weight capacities. The Draw-Tite model has a 4500 lb towing/675 lb tongue weight capacity. The Curt has a lower capacity, at 3500 lb towing/525 lb tongue weight. Keep in mind that the towing capacity of the hitch could be limited by the capacity of the vehicle, if it's less than that of the hitch. The Draw-Tite model will require drilling a 1 inch access hole, unless the vehicle has the factory...

  • Installation Tips for Installing Hidden Hitch on 2015 Jeep Renegade
  • The bumper should not need to be removed to install the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch # 76021 on your 2015 Jeep Renegade. The trailer hitch should have come with 4 fish wires to help you feed the bolts and spacers into place. If your Renegade does not have a tow hook, you will need to drill an access hole to fish the bolt and spacers through. If you have a tow hook, it will not be necessary to drill an access hole. I have attached a page from the installation instructions that illustrates...

  • If you are wanting to carry 4 adult bikes with your 2016 Jeep Renegade then a Class III trailer hitch receiver, like the Draw-Tite # 76021 you reference, is the best way to go. Although this trailer hitch has a tongue weight rating of 675 lbs, I took a look at the online version of your owner's manual and on page 421 it states that the max tongue weight is 200 lbs. The weight of your bike rack and bikes must not exceed this. Since you have a lower tongue weight capacity I recommend using...
