Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario. Technical Support

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Acura MDX - Draw-Tite

Today, on our 2013 Acura MDX, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch receiver, part number 75614. Here's what our hitch looks like fully installed. We are going to see a portion of the cross tube, and it's going to give us that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. It does feature a reinforced collar around it, which is going to give it added strength and giving it a nice, clean, finished look. Now, we're going to have two sets of holes on our receiver tube. The furthest hole towards the front of our vehicle, that's going to be for our hitch pin. It's going to use a standard 5/8 in and clip.

They're not included, but you can pick them up on our website using part number PC3. The secondary hole towards the very rear of the receiver, that's going to be for the J pin stabilization device, which is going to be great if any of your accessories don't have a built in anti-rattle. Now, our safety chain loops are going to be a plate style. Two are welded to the bottom of our receiver tube, and as you can see, we're not going to have any trouble getting most hooks on or off. Another nice feature of our Draw-Tite hitch is that it has a built in bracket for any wiring or accessories that you may need to mount. That way, when you hook up your wiring, it's going to be right here, ready to go.

Our hitch is going to feature a 400 pound tongue weight rating and a 4,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. Now, it is designed to work with weight distribution systems, and that's going to jump our tongue weight up to 500 pounds and our gross trailer rating up to 5,000 pounds. Now, I do want to mention, you always want to check your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure it can handle pulling that amount of weight. I'd like to give you a few measurements that will help you in deciding for accessories for your new hitch, such as a ball mount, a bike rack, or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin holes to the outer most edge of the bumper, it's going to be five inches. Now, from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's going to be 15 1/2 inches.

Now that we've gone over some of these features, let's show you how we get it installed. The first step of our installation is going to be lower our spare tire. After we have our spare tire out of the way, we're going to need to lower our exhaust. We're going to have one hanger on each side of our mufflers. Now, we're also going to have another hanger on each muffler, and that's going to be directly to the outside of our tail pipe on each side of our car. We're going to go ahead and take these off the rubber isolators as well.

Now, I'm just going to take a little bit of penetrating oil, and I'm going to spray a small amount onto the shaft and into the rubber isolator. That's going to help me slide the rubber isolator off the shaft of the hanger. We're going to do that on both sides. We're just going to slide that rubber isolator off the post. Now, before we let our exhaust come all the way down, we are going to need to support it to make sure it doesn't drop too far. We're going to put this strap here, so it will only allow my exhaust to come down so far, and then we're going to remove the other rubber hanger. . Using a 10 millimeter socket, I'm going to pull all the fasteners off that are holding the heat shield in place, and there should be two towards the very back of our vehicle and then one towards the front of our vehicle at the end of our heat shield. Now, we're going to pull both heat shields off, one on each side. . Now, we're going to set the heat shield and the hardware aside because we will be reinstalling them later. On the inside of our frame here is where our hitch is going to be mounted to. We're going to have two holes towards the front, and two holes towards the very back of our vehicle. Now, we're going to have some M14 bolts in our kit, along with some 9/16 washers, and we're going to want to make sure that the washer goes on before we put it in place, and we're going to be threading it in right here on these four holes, and our hitch holes are going to line up with these. Now, before we put our hardware in place, since these are open well nuts in our frame, I'm going to take a little bit of penetrating oil and spray it in each one of my holes, and then I'm going to come back with a nylon brush and clean out the threads. That way, I don't have to worry about any debris or anything messing up the threads. Now, if you need one of these brushes, you can pick one up on our website using part number 814092. Now, with an extra set of hands, we're going to be able to put our hitch into place. Now, I'm only going to get a few bolts in, just enough to hold the hitch up and support itself. That way, I can get the rest of my hardware in place. Using a 22 millimeter socket, I'm going to come back and snug up all my hardware. . We're going to repeat that for all the remaining bolts. With all the bolts snug, I'm going to come back again using a 22 millimeter socket. I'm going to torque my bolts down. Now, we're going to find a torque value in the instructions, and we're going to torque down all of our hardware. . We're going to start beginning to reassemble everything that we took apart, starting with our heat shields, putting them back in place. We're going to go ahead and take our rubber hangers and slide them back on to the exhaust post. . Now, all we have left to do is put our spare tire back. That will finish up our look at the Draw-Tite Max-Frame trailer hitch receiver, part number 75614 on our 2013 Acura MDX.

Very happy with the draw-tite hitch, the shipping, etrailer website, and the customer service. Here are some (hopefully) helpful tidbits: There are 2 exhaust hangers per side. One on each side is tucked under the bumper near the exhaust tips. I initially missed those. I also found it helpful to remove the hangers that are midway from the engine to the back and set the exhaust on the spare tire. (Don't worry. They are very easy to put back.) Only 1 heat shield needs to be removed. (Either one.) there are 3 bolts. They are 10mm. I found a 3" socket extension worked best. I propped the receiver up with my pelvis while starting a bolt on each side. (A sight I'm sure the neighbors just loved.) The piece fits fine with 1/8" gap on each side. no mallet necessary. The bolts are 17mm. I found a 6" extension worked best. Initially I was disappointed with what looked like poor fitment (front tighter than back.) Rest assured, this corrects itself upon incremental tightening, and the fit turns out to be great. Torque the bolts to 90 ft-lbs. After reinstalling everything, guide the spare tire up above the receiver bars first so it goes all the way up. Guide with one hand while turning with the other. Probably took me 90 mins or so, which I'm very happy with. (I'm slow.) Overall, very happy with the whole process. Went off without a hitch. Ba-dum. Tsssss. 87634

Draw-Tite Hitch on 2009 MDX I installed this hitch on my wife's 2009 MDX and am very pleased with the resulting look and also the ease of installation. I also used the "Draw-Tite Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the 2009 Acura MDX (eTrailer part number 118424)", and the "Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat (part # 18144)". The installation videos that are on the eTrailer site were immensely helpful; both for installation of the hitch itself, and also the wiring kit. Having a friend to give me a hand holding the hitch up as recommended in the video made a big difference, it would have been a massive pain to try to hold it up and start the bolts by myself. The video showed the installation with MDX up on a car lift. I don't have access to one of those, so I jacked up both sides of the vehicle and put it on jack stands which gave us a lot more room to work underneath. I also altered the installation of the wiring kit from what the video recommended. The video recommended leaving the wiring in the jack storage compartment when not in use, and hanging it out the rear door when needed. I wanted a little more "professional" look than that, so I ran the wires through a rubber grommet (as is shown in the installation video for the 2010 Acura MDX), and permanently mounted them outside and attached it to the hitch using the flat 4 mounting bracket. The draw-tite hitch is designed with an attachment specifically for this bracket, and makes for a very nice look when installed. Am very happy with the result. 3527

The product was fine and installed fairly easily. The videos are very helpful. Just a note on the MDX; the rubber exhaust hangars are pretty stiff when cold. Best to do this when the shop/garage is warm. Also, like most wrenching, its best to wear protective eyewear; especially if your car has a few miles on it. I had a lot of salt/sand/debris falling from underneath. When you are looking up at the wrench, its bound to break something loose that falls down (along with the lubricant) and is a safety risk. As for packaging and the item itself.... The hitch was sent in a box without any padding or packaging. The two plates had punctured the box. Unfortunately, I did not even notice until collecting the item from my front porch and dragging it puncture-side down damaging my floor. The package was too small for the item and poorly packaged which seems to be the biggest complaint on etrailer. Finally, I live in a state that uses a lot of road salt. Choosing the best protected (e-coated, powder coating, etc.) was very important to me. This hitch came with more deep (to the metal) gouges and scratches than I could believe. There was no problem with the manufacture but it sure made me wonder if it was a cosmetic second. The price was good, shipping and follow-up was excellent, product was okay. Plan to get some touch-up paint (easier before you install) if you worry about corrosion. 110175

Received the product within a week or ordering from They even bumped up my shipping from the standard 5-7 day ground to a 3-5 day ground for no extra charge. The product came 4 days later and was packaged fairly well. The box had been punctured on one spot but there was no damage (dents, scratches, or chipped paint) to the hitch itself. The installation took about 2 hours with prep and clean up, mainly because I was doing it alone using a jack. It will be much easier if you could have a friend help you out. The hitch fits perfectly and is very sturdy without looking too out of place or ruining the design of the rear of the vehicle. I have not towed anything with it at this time, but I have had a bike rack on it with up to 4 bikes and it has performed as promised. 12953

A very nice hitch at a good price. Ordered on Tuesday and the product arrived Thursday - a day earlier than estimated by etrailer. The box was a little torn-up by UPS, but the hitch and parts inside were in excellent shape. I am not that handy so I studied the reviews/video and made sure my tools were adequate for the job before starting. I just followed the installation steps as shown and have to say that it is all very straight forward. As the video said, getting the hitch into place took a little jiggling and an extra pair of hands to get the first couple of bolts started made the task easier. Took a little more than one (1) hour total time in my garage (no lift) to install including prep and clean-up as I was slow and careful with each step. I have to say that I was surprised how easy it was and how quickly I was finished. The hitch looks great and given that it will be used to carry a bike rack the class III rating is more than enough for that job. I couldn't be happier with the experience and will definitely be telling others to use etrailer if they need a hitch. 41849

I'm happy with the hitch. Some paint was scuffed off, but the hitch is nice heavy construction. A few installation notes. The install took quite a while because you really need to clean out the threaded holes(WD40 and small brushes). Someone wrote about not being able to fully tighten the hitch to the car - I am convinced his holes weren't clean. The bolts will bind in the crud. I installed on a 2010 Acura MDX with a factory harness. The factory instructions call for removing the bumper trim panel. Turns out you don't need to. This hitch fits just right below. Instructions also call for unbolting the vehicle control unit. My car didn't have one (as shown in the illustration). Finally, the factory harness plug can't mount to the flange on the hitch. The backside of the plug collides with the frame. Also the harness is short. I will need to fabricate a bracket (not complete in photo). Overall nice product. I would buy again. 419782

Great customer service. Did not try to push other products. Reviewed what type of hitch and accessories I was interested in and explained what I would need to complete the project. The equipment came as scheduled. The box was a little beat up and the ends of the hitch came through the box but no damage or paint chipping. This could have been an UPS issues but I would recommend that etrailer put extra cardboard around the end of the hitch to prevent breaking thru. There was not any double sided tape in the wiring harness box so had to make a trip to the hardware store to pick some up. Also, the video does not address anything about the third row seating on the Acura and the placement of the harness box and ground wire. The hitch fit perfect and was easily installed with an extra set of hands to hold the hitch up into place. Overall a good experience. 426006

Ordered the hitch on Thursday and it arrived Monday using the free shipping option. Everything made it in great shape. The hitch was easy to install on my 2008 MDX using the etrailer video. It took me a little over an hour, no lift, and most of the time was spent searching for the right size socket to get the heat shield off. Small tip, you only need to remove 1 heat shield to get clearance for the hitch to fit. The hitch fit perfectly and 3 of the 4 bolts on each side when in no problem. The lower front bolt is a pain and I recommend using a smaller socket wrench, my heavy duty wrench was just too big. Once installed the hitch is extremely solid and looks great. The wiring is a piece of cake, total of about 15 minutes. Etrailer was fantastic and I could be any happier with my experience. I will use them again, no doubt. 33320

I have found the product, supplier, and support to be excellent. The Video showing installation was a huge benefit and prevented me from having to figure out clearance issues during installation. I followed the steps in the video and with the help of a friend we had the hitch fully installed in 1.5hrs. I did invest in a $34 torque wrench but when you consider the Acura dealer quoted me $834 to install a similar hitch and wiring harness it's still a deal, and I now have a torque wrench. The frame on my car is angled toward the rear and required the hitch mounting plates to be manufactured with compound angles that matched up to the frame. The fact that the hitch went right into place tells me the manufacturer put good quality control into their process. I'd recommend this product to anyone with average experience working on cars. 25598

by: Erik G03/17/2012

The hitch appears well-built and fits nicely into the space. A few install issues. First, the hitch can be positioned with only one person if you get far enough underneath, head towards the front of the car. You can use your knee to hold up one side of the hitch while starting the bolts on the other side. As other reviewers state, the hitch can be installed by removing only one heat shield/exhaust hanger, but removing both heat shields makes it easier to tighten the bolts for the hitch. Beware of the limited room you'll have to sqeeze a wrench into place to remove/replace the heat shields and don't even think about using a long-handled torque wrench to tighten the hitch bolts, especially the bolts located towards the rear end of the car. 34208

- 75614

by: Matt07/08/2013

Installation was just as easy as advertised on a 2013 Acura MDX. Under one hour including cleanup and setup, one person, no lift or jack. There is a extra muffler hanger near the exhaust tip on the 2013 (not shown in the video), but it slips off easily by hand if you push the muffler up just a bit. I recommend unhooking only one muffler and removing its heat shield and sliding the hitch up in slightly diagonally, instead of unhanging both mufflers. If you do the install on your back under the car, you can just rest the hitch on your stomach and put a couple bolts in on each side by hand by yourself. The partialy-obscured install bolts go in easily with a 10" socket extension. 88064

Nice hitch. Packaging could have been better as rails were outside the box when it came. Install was as expected 2hrs but doable. Note for my 2010 acura mdx I had to remove 4 rubber hangers from the exhaust portion they are located on either side of the muffler/heat shields also came off. When you are positioning hitch into place slide one side just above one muffler and raise the opposite side up into place then you can raise other side up. looks beefy and tough was worried that it would stick out but with a hitch cover it blends in nicely 41502

The video was extremely helpful. Installed myself in my garage with no lifts. Took about 3 hours total. Most of that time was spent screwing and unscrewing the heat shields. Some reviews said that you only had to loosen one side of the exhaust. Ending up doing both sides (like the video said!) and it worked perfectly. Everything mounted to the frame very nicely and secure. I feel very confident in the product. All parts arrived QUICKLY (gave free upgrade in shipping) and in great condition. I will definitely shop etrailer again! 50609

Excellent purchase. The order arrived in 2 days, as described and all items were in perfect condition. The hitch itself was very easy to install, even without the lift. You just need to follow the steps from the movie to be able to install it in around an hour. As others have already mentioned, there is no need to remove second heat shield. There is enough room to fit the hitch with one shield still attached to the car. Again, excellent experience. If I ever need another hitch, this site will be the first place I will check to look for it. 51845

by: Jay C04/17/2014

Hitch is well made, easy to install, and comes with all hardware. It is not compatible with factory hitch wiring harness. The 7 pin connector bracket is positioned 3" too close to the receiver, and there is not enough whip in the 7 pin connector to reach the mounting bracket. Had to fabricate a spacer to span the gap. 125833

The welded bracket on the hitch was designed to be used with aftermarket wiring setups and as you found may not work with OEM wiring packages.

Extremely happy with the product. It looks really clean and neat. I had a friend help and it was really good to have extra pair of hands. I didn't have to raise the car. Did not have any problem during the installation on my 2008 MDX. It really helped to have a wrench with extension set and rotating adapter to maneuver around the space. I only lowered one side of the exhaust and everything worked out. Just followed the video. There are two rubber hooks to remove per exhaust (inside, outside). 43582

Great hitch! Installation was easy (you don't even need to jack up the MDX). I really appreciated the model-specific videos on YouTube. It gave me alot of confidence before starting the project. Toughest part was getting the rubber hangers off the muffler. My model had one-way clips on the muffler that made it a little more challenging than the video. I was able to slip the hangers around them by wrapping with some teflon tape. A few good tugs and you're on your way! 11941

Product arrived in great shape & instructions were very straight forward & simple to follow. Hitch looks great & have already started using it. 2nd time I've purchased from etrailer & have had a wonderful experience both times - both quality of products & support regarding installation etc. Will continue purchasing hitches as needed for new vehicles moving forward - great value & much cheaper than paying some local shop to screw in 8 bolts for 200-400 in labor! 102446

The product was ordered on Monday and arrived on Wednesday in spite of the fact that I specified standard free shipping (7-10 days). I installed it by myself, without incident, on Thursday in about an hour, using the video from the website as a guide. I am extremely pleased with the service. As to the product itself, it is sturdy, well built, and fit my MDX perfectly. It has been a pleasure doing business with this company, I recommend them highly. 51304

This arrived quickly, though the box did not fare as well. It could have used a little extra packaging on the edges. It fit perfectly on my 2012 MDX and took about 45 mins to install. The video was right on point for the install and it looked great, pretty clean when it was all said and done. There is one tough bolt on each side but an 8" extension gets right in there. 54164

Took about 2 hours to install including removing spare, dropping mufflers, removing heat shields, etc. Hitch is well built. Some of the powder coat got knocked of with shipping but a touch up with paint only took a couple of minutes. Spare fits just fine with hitch installed. Not much visible except the hitch receiver. Nice product. 62834

Hitch was very easy to install on my '09 MDX. I didn't have to jack up the car and completed the installation without any helpers. I only had to remove one exhaust heat shield to get enough clearance to install the hitch. Use a 12" socket extension to tighten the rear bolts without interference between the hitch and the torque wrench. 25413

Excellent service. Shipped and arrived as promised. All parts included. Installed in no time. Great value considering Acura wanted nearly 3 times what this cost. I would add that the product had a few scratches and nicks, but not a big deal as it will likely get many more and they are certainly not visible. 135016

The hitch is working as advertised for my '08 MDX. Installation would have been faster if I would have cleaned all the bolt holes prior to trying to screw in the bolts. The bolt holes had rusted so it took quite a bit of effort to secure the bolts. Once I cleaned bolt holes with WD40 they went right in! 42346

The installation went pretty good but the muffler posed a little challenge. I had to wedge it in despite removing the hangers. The only thing I need to adjust is how the spare tire fits. I'll need to adjust the hitch as far toward the rear as possible. Right now it is a little tight. 106424

Fairly easy installation; had to negotiate getting the spare back in place; however was pleased with the instructions. Took a little longer than expected; however I have a 2010 vehicle, so took a little bit to clean out the holes for the bolts. Bike rack is next! 182949

The free shipping came just one day after we ordered. Installation was smooth and took about an hour and a half. The video was a plus! Looks great on the 08 Acura MDX and saved us about $800+ that they wanted us to spend at the dealership. Love etrailer! 53223

Shipped pretty quickly. Installation wasn't a problem. It took more time to clean out the threads (2008 model so a decent amount of buildup) than to install (less than an hour). There is a great video on Youtube (better than the one on this site). 84916

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Weight Capacity of Hitch for My 2008 Acura MDX
  • There are several models of hitch available for your 2008 Acura MDX (see link). I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Round Tube Receiver, item # 75614, which has a towing capacity of 4,000 pounds which is the highest rated hitch for your vehicle without a weight distribution system. There is not a Class IV hitch offered for the MDX. The highest hitch rating of 5,000 pounds, for your MDX, is acquired by using a weight distribution system which distributes the weight from the tongue...

There is not a hitch available for models equipped with the full-sized spare. If your MDX has the full sized spare, you might want to check with the dealer about the availability of a compact spare. • Differences Between Curt and Draw Tite Hitch for 2011 Acura MDX
  • Essentially the two hitches you referenced are the same design hitch made by two different manufacturers. The Curt part # 13354 and the Draw Tite # 75614 are both confirmed fits for your 2011 Acura MDX and would work well. The advantage the Curt has is it's made in the USA and is priced better. It would be what I would recommend for you.

  • Why is the Trailer Hitch from Acura Rated Higher than the Draw-Tite Hitch for a 2008 Acura MDX
  • The Acura hitch may be a higher rated trailer hitch than the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75614. The difference is a result of how the hitch is made, the gauge steel used, and where it attaches on the vehicle. Many times, we rate hitches based on how much the vehicle can tow, but this is not always the case. Based on how we define hitches here, both the Draw-Tite hitch and the Acura hitch would be considered Class III hitches (rated up to 6,000/600 pounds). I have included a link to an FAQ...

All can be used with weight distribution to bring the capacity of the hitch up to 500/5,000 pounds. And all of them install in much the same way with an estimated installation time of 30 minutes.
