Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2008 Acura MDX - Draw-Tite

Today in our 2008 Acura MDX we'll be installing the draw tight class three max range trailer hitch receiver. Part number 75614. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see it's tucked up nicely behind our bumper cover and the part that hangs down is the class three, two-inch receiver here and a little bit of the frame of the hitch. You may notice right here, there's this tab sticking out with a couple holes. This is for mounting a bracket to secure your wiring for your trailer harness such as a four pull flat or seven pull round. We also have these nice, easy to use safety chain loops right here. A plate welded on the bottom of the receiver. Really easy to use even for small diameters safety chains they should clip in there nice and easily.

There's two pin holes here on the side, the back one right here is the standard 5/8th inch diameter hitch pin hole to secure your ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. To the rear of that we have a half inch diameter hole for a j pin stabilization device. What a j pin stabilization device is if your device doesn't already have an anti-rattle device built into the shank of it where it goes in the receiver such as your bike rack or cargo carrier. The j pin will take up some of that rattle and you won't have to listen to the shake going down the road inside your receiver causing noise. This hitch has a 400 pound max tongue weight rating and a 4,000 pound max gross trailer rate rating. If we we're to step up to weight distribution that max tongue weight tows increase to 500 pounds and the max gross trailer rate rating also increases to 5,000 pounds.

Now you'll obviously want to consult with the owner manual of your Acura MDX. This hitch features a nice gloss powder coat finish. It will resist rusting for many years down the road. Now for a few measurements to help you choose any hitch mounted accessories you may need such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. You're looking at about six inches from the center of the 5/8th diameter hitch pin hole to the rear most point on our back bumper and about sixteen inches from the ground to the top of the two inch receiver opening. Now that we've gone over some of the features, of our draw type class 3 hitch we will show you how to install it on our Acura MDX. Here's what our hitch comes with.

With the hitch here itself and the hardware necessary to install it. We have eight bolts here and eight washers. This hitch goes on to factory well nuts already in the frame there's no drilling required, fairly easy installation. With our rear hatch opened here, we'll take out this factory accessory cargo mat here and set it aside. Open this up here. We'll gain access to our spare tire tools.

Well get our spare tire tools out. Right here, we'll pop this open so we can lower the spare tire. Now your spare tire iron that comes with the vehicle, there's a little notch here inside and fits down over the stud to lower the spare tire. Lift up on our spare tire here and we'll move the cable from it and set the tire aside. Now we need to lower our exhaust down to have access for our hitch to go up. Spray the hangers with the lubricant here so they slide off nice and easy. There's one on the inside edge of the muffler and one towards the rear of the muffler on the outer edge. Now this vehicle has dual exhausts so we'll need to do the same on the other side. Now we'll take a pry bar here and work our hangers off. Do the same on the other side. Now we need to remove our heat shields. There's three, ten millimeter bolts on either side. Do the same on the other side and here are our four factory holes. That our hitch should be installed on, on either side. It's a good idea to spray some lubricant in there to wash any dirt, debris, or rust that may be in there. Do the same on the other side. Now we'll install our washers on all of our bolts. So we'll raise our hitch up over our exhaust, like so. We'll install our hardware. See this gap between the hitch and the frame of the car, once we start to tighten the bolts down it will draw the hitch into the frame and everything will be secure. Now we'll use a 22 millimeter socket and we'll tighten our bolts up. Now for these bolts here towards the rear of the hitch, you'll use an extension you can get to them a lot easier. They're all spinning nice and easy so now we can push for impact. Now it's a good idea to alternate the bolts just so it draws the hitch in evenly so we'll switch to the other side. Now that all of our hardware is tightened down we'll torque it to the manufacturers specifications found in the instructions. Now our hitch is torqued down to the manufacturers specifications we can reinstall our exhaust shields. Do the same on the other side, now with our heat shields back up we'll raise our exhaust back up like so and reinstall our hangers. Okay with our hangers reinstalled we can now reinstall our spare tire. With our spare tire snug back up, we'll close our cover here, reinstall our tools and we're done. That completes our installation of the draw tight max range class 3 trailer hitch receiver part number 75614 on our 2008 Acura MDX.

Trailer hitch was exactly what I ordered. However the description makes it look like it come with wiring which it does not. Would have easily paid for the wiring, but like is said, when you are looking to purchase the hitch, it looks like it come with wiring. 630977

Comments

The trailer wiring harness is indeed sold as a separate item, because a good-sized percentage of folks who purchase a hitch do so to use as an attachment point for hitch mounted accessories, and have no intention of towing with the hitch.

Purchased this product a year ago for our 2008 Acura MDX. Install was super easy, and went smoothly. I used a couple of jack stands to help out since I was doing it alone. If you don’t have an extra set of hands to help out I would recommend that. It fits snug to the vehicle, and looks like it was meant to be there. Definitely recommend this. 517627

Product installed as expected and was not difficult. The packaging of the item needs improvement. Half of the hitch was hanging out of the box upon arrival. Not sure if it was a handling problem or just poor packaging design. I would recommend. 394257

Draw-Tite Hitch on 2009 MDX I installed this hitch on my wife's 2009 MDX and am very pleased with the resulting look and also the ease of installation. I also used the "Draw-Tite Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the 2009 Acura MDX (eTrailer part number 118424)", and the "Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat (part # 18144)". The installation videos that are on the eTrailer site were immensely helpful; both for installation of the hitch itself, and also the wiring kit. Having a friend to give me a hand holding the hitch up as recommended in the video made a big difference, it would have been a massive pain to try to hold it up and start the bolts by myself. The video showed the installation with MDX up on a car lift. I don't have access to one of those, so I jacked up both sides of the vehicle and put it on jack stands which gave us a lot more room to work underneath. I also altered the installation of the wiring kit from what the video recommended. The video recommended leaving the wiring in the jack storage compartment when not in use, and hanging it out the rear door when needed. I wanted a little more "professional" look than that, so I ran the wires through a rubber grommet (as is shown in the installation video for the 2010 Acura MDX), and permanently mounted them outside and attached it to the hitch using the flat 4 mounting bracket. The draw-tite hitch is designed with an attachment specifically for this bracket, and makes for a very nice look when installed. Am very happy with the result. 3527

I'm happy with the hitch. Some paint was scuffed off, but the hitch is nice heavy construction. A few installation notes. The install took quite a while because you really need to clean out the threaded holes(WD40 and small brushes). Someone wrote about not being able to fully tighten the hitch to the car - I am convinced his holes weren't clean. The bolts will bind in the crud. I installed on a 2010 Acura MDX with a factory harness. The factory instructions call for removing the bumper trim panel. Turns out you don't need to. This hitch fits just right below. Instructions also call for unbolting the vehicle control unit. My car didn't have one (as shown in the illustration). Finally, the factory harness plug can't mount to the flange on the hitch. The backside of the plug collides with the frame. Also the harness is short. I will need to fabricate a bracket (not complete in photo). Overall nice product. I would buy again. 419782

Received the product within a week or ordering from etrailer.com. They even bumped up my shipping from the standard 5-7 day ground to a 3-5 day ground for no extra charge. The product came 4 days later and was packaged fairly well. The box had been punctured on one spot but there was no damage (dents, scratches, or chipped paint) to the hitch itself. The installation took about 2 hours with prep and clean up, mainly because I was doing it alone using a jack. It will be much easier if you could have a friend help you out. The hitch fits perfectly and is very sturdy without looking too out of place or ruining the design of the rear of the vehicle. I have not towed anything with it at this time, but I have had a bike rack on it with up to 4 bikes and it has performed as promised. 12953

Very happy with the draw-tite hitch, the shipping, etrailer website, and the customer service. Here are some (hopefully) helpful tidbits: There are 2 exhaust hangers per side. One on each side is tucked under the bumper near the exhaust tips. I initially missed those. I also found it helpful to remove the hangers that are midway from the engine to the back and set the exhaust on the spare tire. (Don't worry. They are very easy to put back.) Only 1 heat shield needs to be removed. (Either one.) there are 3 bolts. They are 10mm. I found a 3" socket extension worked best. I propped the receiver up with my pelvis while starting a bolt on each side. (A sight I'm sure the neighbors just loved.) The piece fits fine with 1/8" gap on each side. no mallet necessary. The bolts are 17mm. I found a 6" extension worked best. Initially I was disappointed with what looked like poor fitment (front tighter than back.) Rest assured, this corrects itself upon incremental tightening, and the fit turns out to be great. Torque the bolts to 90 ft-lbs. After reinstalling everything, guide the spare tire up above the receiver bars first so it goes all the way up. Guide with one hand while turning with the other. Probably took me 90 mins or so, which I'm very happy with. (I'm slow.) Overall, very happy with the whole process. Went off without a hitch. Ba-dum. Tsssss. 87634

2009 Acura MDX

Great basic product at a fraction of the OEM price, though it won't allow the mounting of a full size spare (which I knew going in, from other reviews and the product description). Was able to mount it up easily on my 2009 MDX without help (other than my wife handing me tools), no issues at all! Doesn't touch the plastic rear bumper fascia at all, fits perfectly. The large bolt heads, as compared the reduced-head flange bolts used with the Curt version, were no issue at all, just took about 1% more patience and finesse for the ones partially obstructed by the hitch tube itself. I didn't happen to have the right tap on hand so chased the threads on all (8) of the frame weld-nuts with one of the mounting bolts before I got started, making sure to get it properly threaded in each hole before rattling it down with the impact gun. Blew any dust or particles remaining in the holes out with an air nozzle, then used blue thread locker when I bolted the hitch in. Make sure to tighten per spec (90 ft-lbs in my case). Only needed to drop the heat shield and tail pipe on one side, FYI. Be sure to use a non-petroleum lube when prying the rubber isolation mounts off the exhaust system, BTW - plain oil will attack the rubber over time (I used white lithium spray grease). I only needed to disconnect the two isolation mounts near the muffler (leaving the one further forward alone), and zip tied the exhaust down and to the outside to get it out of the way in order to slide the hitch into position. The whole thing was really straightforward, and anyone with even moderate wrenching skills and basic mechanic tools can do it. My one and only gripe was the flimsy packing of the hitch from the warehouse or factory. As so many other reviewers have noted, the mounting flanges had beaten their way thru the single layer of cardboard during handling, and the exposed flanges arrived somewhat bent. It was not a huge deal and was easily fixed, but could have been avoided altogether if the shipping carton simply had reinforced corners where the flanges ride. But the flattened e-trailer shipping carton DID make a nice pad to lay on while installing! 643692

Great customer service. Did not try to push other products. Reviewed what type of hitch and accessories I was interested in and explained what I would need to complete the project. The equipment came as scheduled. The box was a little beat up and the ends of the hitch came through the box but no damage or paint chipping. This could have been an UPS issues but I would recommend that etrailer put extra cardboard around the end of the hitch to prevent breaking thru. There was not any double sided tape in the wiring harness box so had to make a trip to the hardware store to pick some up. Also, the video does not address anything about the third row seating on the Acura and the placement of the harness box and ground wire. The hitch fit perfect and was easily installed with an extra set of hands to hold the hitch up into place. Overall a good experience. 426006

This is my 2nd time purchasing from etrailer and I couldnt be any happier. My only wish is that it specified if you can fit a full size spare tire or a doughnut. Some other brands unlike mine actually can fit a full size spare.

Excellent service. Shipped and arrived as promised. All parts included. Installed in no time. Great value considering Acura wanted nearly 3 times what this cost. I would add that the product had a few scratches and nicks, but not a big deal as it will likely get many more and they are certainly not visible. 135016

Hitch is well made, easy to install, and comes with all hardware. It is not compatible with factory hitch wiring harness. The 7 pin connector bracket is positioned 3" too close to the receiver, and there is not enough whip in the 7 pin connector to reach the mounting bracket. Had to fabricate a spacer to span the gap. 125833

Comments

The welded bracket on the hitch was designed to be used with aftermarket wiring setups and as you found may not work with OEM wiring packages.

The product was fine and installed fairly easily. The videos are very helpful. Just a note on the MDX; the rubber exhaust hangars are pretty stiff when cold. Best to do this when the shop/garage is warm. Also, like most wrenching, its best to wear protective eyewear; especially if your car has a few miles on it. I had a lot of salt/sand/debris falling from underneath. When you are looking up at the wrench, its bound to break something loose that falls down (along with the lubricant) and is a safety risk. As for packaging and the item itself.... The hitch was sent in a box without any padding or packaging. The two plates had punctured the box. Unfortunately, I did not even notice until collecting the item from my front porch and dragging it puncture-side down damaging my floor. The package was too small for the item and poorly packaged which seems to be the biggest complaint on etrailer. Finally, I live in a state that uses a lot of road salt. Choosing the best protected (e-coated, powder coating, etc.) was very important to me. This hitch came with more deep (to the metal) gouges and scratches than I could believe. There was no problem with the manufacture but it sure made me wonder if it was a cosmetic second. The price was good, shipping and follow-up was excellent, product was okay. Plan to get some touch-up paint (easier before you install) if you worry about corrosion. 110175

by:

The installation went pretty good but the muffler posed a little challenge. I had to wedge it in despite removing the hangers. The only thing I need to adjust is how the spare tire fits. I'll need to adjust the hitch as far toward the rear as possible. Right now it is a little tight. 106424

Product arrived in great shape & instructions were very straight forward & simple to follow. Hitch looks great & have already started using it. 2nd time I've purchased from etrailer & have had a wonderful experience both times - both quality of products & support regarding installation etc. Will continue purchasing hitches as needed for new vehicles moving forward - great value & much cheaper than paying some local shop to screw in 8 bolts for 200-400 in labor! 102446

2013 Acura MDX

Installation was just as easy as advertised on a 2013 Acura MDX. Under one hour including cleanup and setup, one person, no lift or jack. There is a extra muffler hanger near the exhaust tip on the 2013 (not shown in the video), but it slips off easily by hand if you push the muffler up just a bit. I recommend unhooking only one muffler and removing its heat shield and sliding the hitch up in slightly diagonally, instead of unhanging both mufflers. If you do the install on your back under the car, you can just rest the hitch on your stomach and put a couple bolts in on each side by hand by yourself. The partialy-obscured install bolts go in easily with a 10" socket extension. 88064

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Differences Between Curt and Draw Tite Hitch for 2011 Acura MDX
  • Essentially the two hitches you referenced are the same design hitch made by two different manufacturers. The Curt part # 13354 and the Draw Tite # 75614 are both confirmed fits for your 2011 Acura MDX and would work well. The advantage the Curt has is it's made in the USA and is priced better. It would be what I would recommend for you.

For wiring harness # 118424 or any of the wiring harnesses for the vehicle you can route the 4-Way through the vehicle and outside to attach it to the bracket rather than storing the harness in the vehicle when not in use. • The Curt 2-inch Class III hitch # 13354 is compatible with the smaller "donut" size spare tire but not a full-size spare tire on your 2013 Acura MDX. Both this and the Draw-Tite hitch option # 75614 are incompatible with the full-size spare. All hitches we offer include the required mounting hardware and written instructions; no other parts are needed for installation. The linked instructions also detail the specific tools required for installation. For a wiring harness you can use Curt...

  • Recommended Bike Rack for 2007 Acura MDX
  • To carry a pair of mountain bikes on your 2007 Acura MDX you have a couple options. The best one is going to be a hitch-mounted rack because they offer the most protection for your bikes, are easy to load and unload, and offer the ability to access your rear cargo area. Please keep in mind that you would not be able to install a hitch if your MDX has a full-sized spare tire under the vehicle, though a mini spare tire would allow a hitch to be installed. If you are able to install a hitch,...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2003 Acura MDX
  • I am assuming you have a 2003 Acura MDX since the trailer hitch that you referenced fits the Acura MDX. I do have a trailer hitch that will fit the 2003 Acura MDX, however, the hitch that you referenced will only fit 2007 to 2013 models. For your 2003 model, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch, # 75599. This hitch was designed to fit the 2001 to 2006 MDX. I have attached an installation video of this hitch on a 2004 model for you to check out. The installation process will...

  • Trailer Wiring and Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2008 Acura MDX

This product will plug into your vehicle and will operate the brake lights and turn signals of your trailer, check out the installation instructions I attached. I would recommend you get a supplemental transmission cooler for your vehicle if you plan on towing. The factory transmission cooler is often adequate at best for non-towing situations, so a supplemental cooler...

  • Why is the Trailer Hitch from Acura Rated Higher than the Draw-Tite Hitch for a 2008 Acura MDX
  • The Acura hitch may be a higher rated trailer hitch than the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75614. The difference is a result of how the hitch is made, the gauge steel used, and where it attaches on the vehicle. Many times, we rate hitches based on how much the vehicle can tow, but this is not always the case. Based on how we define hitches here, both the Draw-Tite hitch and the Acura hitch would be considered Class III hitches (rated up to 6,000/600 pounds). I have included a link to an FAQ...

You would then need two brackets, part # BK70BB. To attach the brackets to the carrier you will need self-tapping screws like part # FA1131822 or you can use other hardware to mount the light brackets. This light kit does come with a 4-way trailer connector so if your Acura needs a wiring harness...

  • Trunk Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2009 Acura MDX Carrying 3 Bikes
  • The Yakima HangOut 3 Bike Rack, # Y02638, would be an excellent choice for your 2009 Acura MDX. Of the trunk mounted options that are available for your vehicle this one is among the easiest to install and remove and will allow you to attach the bikes easily. Using a trunk mount bike rack on your 2009 Acura MDX would require you to remove the rack each time you needed to access the back of the vehicle. For this reason I recommend using a trailer hitch and hitch mounted bike rack. My...

All can be used with weight distribution to bring the capacity of the hitch up to 500/5,000 pounds. And all of them install in much the same way with an estimated installation time of 30 minutes. The recommended trailer wiring is part # 118424 and the recommended installation method is to have it come out of the rear hatch and have the door shut on the wires when needed. • To determine if the Carpod # M2200-01-02 Cargo Carrier will fit in your 2012 Acura MDX, you'll need to measure the distance between the hitch pin hole and the receiver and the rear-most portion of the back bumper. If this distance is less than 4 inches, the Carpod carrier would work great. When we installed hitches on a 2012 MDX, we found that the Curt # 13354 had 3-1/2 inches of clearance, while the Draw-Tite # 75614 had 3-3/4 inches of clearance.
