Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Speaker 1: Today on this 2017 Mercedes Benz GLA, we will be having a look at and showing you how to install the Draw Tite Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 75223. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. One of the great features about this hitch is that the entire body of it is hidden behind our rear fascia. The only part you'll see hanging down is the actual receiver itself. On the side of our receiver, you'll find two holes. The longer one closest to the front is for our industry standard 5/8 of an inch diameter pin and clip, which secures our hitch-mounted accessories. You can pick up a pin and clip on our website as part number PC3.

The one closest to the rear, that's for our J-pin stabilization device. What that does is take away the annoying shake, play, and rattle out of what is inserted into your receiver. We have one of those available separately as well. One unique features about this hitch is the safety chain loops. They hang down below the receiver themselves on these tabs, and these tabes are great because they have a really large opening. Even if you have a trailer with a very large hook such as this one, you can still easily clip in and clip out.

Since this hangs down below the hole for our pin and clip, even if we're using a locking device we're not going to have to worry about any interference with this hitting the locking device to secure our ball mount. On the end of our receiver you'll find this nice collar that's welded on. Now, this gives us a nice finished look and also helps improve the strength of the receiver opening. Many of our customers really like this hitch because it's a great candidate for using with bike racks. A lot of the Mercedes owners that we've seen are buying this hitch solely for using with a bike rack. Now, the reason this hitch works great with bike racks and cargo carriers is because we have plenty of clearance around the receiver from our fascia.

This way, we don't have to worry about any potential contact or interference. As far as weight capacities go, this hitch features a 350 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 3,500 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull. Now, you want to make sure you consult with the owner's manual of your vehicle and go by whichever number's lower. If a vehicle is not capable of towing 3,500 pounds, you don't want to exceed with the vehicle is rated for.Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 14 inches from the ground to the top of the receiver opening, and about 4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rearmost part of the back bumper. Now, many of our customers have stated that they found this hitch to be a bit difficult to install.

We'll show you how easy it can be.To begin our install, we'll start by opening our rear hatch. Now, looking over on our driver's side of our hatch area, we have this compartment. We'll open this. Now we have this wing nut that holds our driver's side taillight in place. We'll remove this nut so we can pull back on the taillight assembly. Now we can grab our taillight assembly and pull back. On the back side of our taillight assembly we have our electrical connector. There's a tab at top of it. We press down that tab, we can pull back on the connector and remove it. Our passenger side's a little bit different. We have this small door here to remove. Our wing nut's right there. Our taillight assembly will still pull back the same way. Our tab's the same. Now, underneath the vehicle we have our exhaust tips. We need to remove these on both sides by removing the two T40 torque screws that hold them in place. Then we'll pull down on it and slide it forward, tilt down, and then pull back off the muffler. Now on the sides of our muffler, we have an external torques bolt here which holds our exhaust hanger in place. Now, this is kind of an odd sized bolt, but a 10 millimeter socket fits over it just fine. We'll do the same on the other side. Now, above our muffler we have a heat shield. It's held in place with six 8 millimeter nuts just like this one. We'll remove all of these nuts. Now, on each side where our fascia attaches to the vehicle, we'll have two 10 millimeter bolts to remove. One here, and then we'll have one that goes through the access hole in our heat shield to remove as well. Now we'll have two plastic clips to remove. This one here and this one here. The way these work is you can take a flat head screwdriver, go underneath the center section, pry down a little bit. It'll pop out. Then you can go under the main section, pry down, and pull it out.Now on the back side of our fascia where it meets the fender in our wheel well, we hae a 10 millimeter bolt to remove. Inside the wheel well where our wheel liner meets the fascia, we have another one of those plastic clips to remove. It works the same way as the other ones. Now, for this one I am going to use a trim panel tool once I have it popped out a little bit, just to get a little more leverage on it to make it easier. Now we need to peel back on our wheel molding. We'll take a very small flathead screwdriver, come in at the bottom where it meets the fascia, and pry back a little bit where we can then grab it with our fingers and start to unclip it. We'll pull back all the way from our fascia. Once you get to this point, it's no longer held in place with clips, it's held in place with tape. You don't want to go past this point, otherwise you'll have to replace the tape in order for it to adhere to the vehicle. Now with an extra set of hands, we can remove our fascia. We'll reach behind our trim on the side and pull it away from the vehicle. Then we'll come to these tabs here. We'll take a small flathead screwdriver and lift up as we pull back to release these tabs. With those released, we'll pull back from the vehicle. As we start to pull back, we'll stick our hands behind the fascia and grab the part where it clips in and help pull back. Now on each side, we'll locate our rear parking assist sensors. The easiest way to deal with these is to unclip the latch that holds them in place with a flathead screwdriver. Be on at the top and two at the bottom. We can fold up and then pull the whole sensor assembly out. The white part will face towards our bumper, and then we can unclip our wiring just by pulling it off the vehicle. With our wiring unclipped, we can now pull the fascia off and set it aside. Now we'll unclip the wiring from the bumper beam on the passenger side. Now, on each side of our vehicle we'll have four 16 millimeter nuts just like these that hold our bumper beam in place. We'll remove all of these nuts. Now with an extra set of hands, we'll grab our bumper beam, wiggle it back and forth a little bit because it has a tape seal on it, and we can set it aside. We'll take our hitch now and rest it over the studs. Now, before we raise our hitch and bumper beam assembly back into position on the vehicle, we're going to go around the opening in our frame with some silicone sealant, which we have available on our website. This will just keep any moisture, dirt and debris from entering our frame rail and causing possible rust in the future. We'll line our holes up and now we'll reinstall our factory nuts over the studs. Now we'll tighten down our hardware. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. Now, we've marked out on our heat shield an area that we need to trim out. I'll be using a pair of tin snips for this. You'll want to make sure you're wearing gloves as you do this, because it is sharp. With our heat shield trimmed, that will now fit around our hitch so we can reinstall it. All right, now with an extra set of hands we'll reinstall our fascia, making sure our parking sensors go back into place. Now we can reinstall our exhaust hangers. Now our exhaust tips can go back on. Now we'll reinstall our taillights the same way that we took them out. That completes our look at and showing you how to install the Draw Tite Class III Hitch, part number 75223 on this 2017 Mercedes Benz GLA.

Looks great, I had my car dealer install, it was beyond my skill and tool level. My primary use is for a bike rack, I really did not want to install a roof mounted rack due to my other vehicle has a hitch mount, 226994

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Mercedes GLA Class for Bike Rack
The only size hitch we offer for your 2015 Mercedes GLA Class is the 2 inch size like the part # 75223 which is a confirmed fit. You could use a sleeve adapter like part # HT02 with your Kuat Sherpa 2.0 part # SH12G but you may see a bit of movement on the rack.

The exhaust would need to be temporarily lowered to install this hitch (this is a very common install step for hitches), but there would be no permanent modification. The heat shield would also need to be slightly modified as well. A local garage with a good reputation would have no problem...

The trailer hitch that I recommend for your 2017 Infiniti QX30 is the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13197.
