If you've ever gotten your RV from storage and found it with a dead battery, this portable Optimate solar system is a perfect solution. It provides an easy way to charge your RV batteries and keep them in good working order with clean, renewable power. Using the 40-watt solar panel, this system collects solar energy to create DC power that passes through a solar charge controller and into your battery.

When your RV is parked, position the panel where it can receive direct sunlight and leave it plugged in. The solar controller will monitor the battery, maintaining it and preventing it from being overcharged. It includes adapters to suit your charging application and a heavy-duty, nylon carrying case for convenient transport and storage.

This is also a great choice for maintaining the battery in your motorcycle, ATV, golf cart, or other big toy. Simply mount the panel to the roof or wall of your garage and run the cables inside.

Polycrystalline Solar Panel

Optimate solar panel standing on adjustable legs

The charging process starts with the solar panel, which has folding legs so you can park in the shade and still have it angled directly at the sun. When solar energy interacts with the silicon cells in the panel, it generates a flow of DC electrical current that charges your battery. In optimal sunlight conditions, this panel produces 40 watts per hour.

Smart Solar Controller Charges and Protects Battery

The solar controller prevents harmful overcharging by adjusting the power generated by the solar panel before it reaches your batteries. It uses pulse width modulation technology to regulate the output through pulses that provide a consistent charge. Typically, PWM controllers are a good fit for smaller systems with lower voltages compared to more expensive MPPT solar controllers.

Using a multistage charging system, the controller automatically switches voltages while the battery bank charges. This accelerates the charge, but also helps extend battery life by adjusting the voltage during the different modes. The controller is compatible with multiple battery types and includes preset charging profiles for sealed/gel, AGM, flooded/wet cell, and lithium batteries.

Charging Modes

  1. Save: When battery save mode is in progress, the solar charge controller is detecting a battery lower than 12V. It can save a battery discharged as low as 4V.
  2. Charge & Optimize: In this mode, the controller will be actively charging the battery. The battery is optimized by continuing charging for at least 10 more minutes.
  3. Maintain: The battery will be maintained in this mode as the charger delivers a holding voltage between 13.3V and 13.6V.

Optimate solar charge controller

LED indicators provide information on the current solar panel output. The lights will tell you if the panel is providing a charge, if the battery is deeply discharged and in save mode, if the battery is moderately charged and in charge & optimize mode, and when the battery is fully charged and being maintained. It automatically detects battery type and chooses the appropriate charging profile.

Easy-to-Use Adapters for Battery Connection

Optimate cables for attaching panel to battery

This kit includes two cables for temporary or permanent attachment to your battery. The SAE plugs connect to the charge controller and attach to your battery using ring terminals or alligator clips. The ring terminals are good for creating a port on your motorcycle, ATV, golf cart, or RV so you can park it and quickly attach the solar panel with zero fuss. The alligator clips are a good option if your battery is easily accessible and you only occasionally plan to hook up the solar panel.

Heavy-Duty, Nylon Carrying Case

The durable, nylon carrying case has a soft interior to help protect your panel during storage and transport.

  • Portable Solar Panel for 2020 Brookstone 310RL
Hi Jay; if all you're looking to do is maintain the batteries without any power draw you can use a panel like the # MA56JR. If you actually want to be able to charge the batteries/maintain power from small loads in the trailer you will need something larger. Assuming that is the case, the 100 Watt # GP66FR or 200 Watt # 34282610 would be the right choice. All of these will fit an SAE plug like # GP49QR which is what you probably have on the front of your trailer.

  • Solar Trickle Charger for Horse Trailer 12V Battery
Hey Chaz! Yes, there are solar panels that can be used to maintain the battery on your horse trailer. The OptiMate Solar Duo Portable Solar Panel with Controller # MA69JR can be mounted with suction cups or permanently mounted to the roof of your trailer. It doesn't have a super high output but that isn't a major concern since you only use the trailer a few times a year. If you keep your trailer in the shade and would like an option you can sit out away from the trailer in the sun then...

  • Solar Panel Kit Recommendation for Top of Propane Tank Cover
Hey Jeff, we have the OptiMate Solar Duo Portable Solar Panel with Controller # MA56JR which would be a great option for you. The solar panel measures 27" long x 16-5/8" wide x 1-1/4" deep which should just about right for the top of a propane tank cover and it can put out 40 watts of power and includes it's own controller. What type of batteries do you have?

  • Portable Solar Panels for RV - What Do I Need
What I think you are asking is how to determine the minimum amount of energy, by way of solar panels, that you need to have available to put back in to your battery. If your goal is to simply maintain the battery while the RV is in storage unable to connect to a functioning battery charger, then I suggest the OptiMate Solar Duo Portable Solar Panel with Controller for either 10 Watts, # MA69JR or # MA56JR for 40 watts depending on the size of your battery bank. If you have a single battery...

  • Will The OptiMate Solar Duo Portable Solar Panel with Controller MA56JR Work With AGM Batteries?
Hello Doug, it sounds like you are on the right track, because the OptiMate Solar Duo Portable Solar Panel with Controller # MA56JR will work great for keeping your AGM battery charged while the trailer is in storage. Like you said it is not the fastest charge, but it will work great for keeping things topped off during the off season.

  • Recommended Solar Charger To Maintain House Batteries on 2019 Winnebago Adventurer
Since this is just a maintenance charge in storage you can use the OptiMate Solar Duo Portable Solar Panel with Controller # MA56JR. The solar cable is 80" long, the controller cable is 40" and then the battery clamp/ring terminal leads are 20". If you need more you can pick up a 2-pole extension to run it out farther. The only ones we carry are 12" long like the # HM47965 so you will probably need to grab that somewhere else. The panel can be mounted directly on the back or you can use...
