Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

Rob: Rob here at etrailer.com, and today you're going to be taking a look at the Draw Tite Class II custom fit trailer hitch receiver on our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. So here's what our hitch is going to look like once we have it installed. The crosstube is going to be visible, it's going to sit right down below the bumper, but it's still going to have that really clean appearance to it because it is going to be tucked back a little bit and the main thing we see is just that receiver tube sticking out.Now our hitch is going to allow us to do a lot of different things. If you want to tow a trailer, we can do that. We can make some room on the inside of our car for more passengers or pets, we can use a cargo carrier to put that gear on the outside, or if we want to take a bike ride, hit the trails, we can put a bike rack in here and we can be on the way.But regardless of what we're going to be using it for, all of our accessories are going to mount to the hitch pin hole here on the side. Our hitch is going to accept a standard half inch pin and clip.

These are not included with the kit, but you can pick them up here etrailer.com along with some locking devices to make sure your accessories are secure. If you are going to be towing a trailer, obviously you need a spot to hook up your safety chains. And here we're going to have a loop style welded to the bottom of the receiver tube. And you can see we have plenty of room to get most sized hooks on or off.You want to make sure your hitch is going to be up to the task and put it to, so as far as the weight ratings go, our hitch is going to have a 350 pound tongue weight, which is going to be the maximum downward force at the end of the receiver tube. It's also going to have a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's how much it can pull, including the trailer and everything we have loaded on it.

But you do want to always double check your Subaru's owner's manual because you don't want to exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight.I'd like to give you a few measurements. These are going to help you out whenever you're looking for accessories for your new hitch such as a bike rack or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is right about two and a half inches. Now this measurement is going to help you out when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure that they can go into the stored upright position and they're not going to come in contact with the rear bumper. From the ground and the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening is going to be right about 16 inches.

Now at that height, that should be enough ground clearance for most bike racks or cargo carriers that we're not going to have to worry about it.But now that we've seen what the hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's put it on together. To begin our installation, we want to come to the back of our Subaru and we're going to have to lower our exhaust down. But before we do, we want to put up a support strap so it's not going to hang down too far and cause any damage. So you want to come to right about where the rear axle is, if not forward, and find a solid point to put your support strap up. And then you just want to make sure that it's tight enough that it will support the exhaust. Then we can start working on removing all the hangers that are holding it in place.

The first one is going to be right in front of the rear axle here. We'll have a rubber isolator on that metal hanger, and the main goal here is just to slide one of those off so the exhaust can come down.So to help slide that off, I'm going to spray a little bit of spray lubricant on the hanger, and then I'm going to use a pry bar. I'm going to pry against it until I can get it to come off. Now as we move towards the back of the car, we'll have two rubber hangers on the driver's side. We'll have another one on the passenger side of the muffler. We're going to do the same method. Just spray them down and use a pry bar to slide them off.Once all the hangers are loose, I'm going to loosen up the support strap slowly just so I can let the exhaust come down and we've got a little bit more room to work with above it. If we look at the frame rail, on each side, we're going to have three rubber plugs. We're going to grab a flat blade screwdriver and we're going to pull all of those out.So we're going to come underneath the edge and pry those out. We'll move to the other side and pull the plugs out as well. With all the plugs removed, I'd like to go over the mounting locations for our hitch. On each side of the frame, they're going to be exactly the same. We'll have the large hole towards the front and then the hole at the very back of our frame rail towards the bumper. Those are going to be our two mounting locations and we're going to have to get some hardware in place.Just want to grab our pull wire. We'll take the coiled end and we'll start by feeding it into the furthest hole towards our bumper. We're going to feed it in until we can get it to come back towards the access hole, which is a large hole towards the back. And if you need to you can kind of reach in with your finger. We just want that coiled end of the wire to come out. But you also want to make sure that the tail end is still sticking out of the frame as well. Then we'll grab a square hole spacer block. We'll slide it over our wire, push it into the frame, and then we'll grab a carriage bolt from our kit and we'll thread it onto the end of our wire. We're going to push our bolts in the frame and we'll pull down until the bolt drops down to the frame. You want to leave the pull wire attached for now. It'll make it easier where we don't have to worry about the bolt getting pushed back in.Now for our second piece of hardware, going right here, it's going to be a little bit different. We're still going to use our pull wire. We'll take a square hole spacer box, slide it over the coiled end, and then we'll thread our carriage bolts in place. And then we'll push our bolt in, followed by the block, making sure it goes all the way in the frame. And we're trying to pull back until our bolt comes through and engages that block. Now we're going to repeat the entire process over on the other of the frame as well. Before we put our hitch in place, we're going to have to get one more piece of hardware, except this time it's going to go on the hitch. We have these round hole spacer blocks, and these need to go to the very front, or the furthest away from the receiver tube. These are going to go get sandwiched in between our hitch, so I'm going to use a piece of tape just to lightly hold it in place. You don't have to worry about it falling when we go to put our hitch up. But we're going to put one of these on both sides of our hitch on the furthest forward mounting location. Now with an extra set of hands, we're going to feed our pull wires down through and get our hitch in place. Lift our hitch up and make sure all the bolts come down through the hitch. We'll remove one of our pull wires and we'll take a conical tooth washer, we want to make sure the teeth are facing up towards the hitch, and then we'll take a hex nut and secure it down. You want to get at least one piece of hardware on each side. That way the hitch will hold itself up and we can work on getting the rest of the hardware in place.Once you have all your hardware in place, you're going to want to grab an 11 16ths socket and we'll tighten it all up. Then you want to come back with a torque wrench. We're going to torque all of our hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. And we're going to repeat that for all of our remaining hardware. And for the bolt on the passenger side, because of the side plate here, it will help if you get an extension and a swivel so you can get in and reach it fully.I'm going to spray a little bit more lubricant on the hangers and the rubber isolators. We can lift our exhaust back up. And we'll slide the rubber isolator back onto the hanger. And we'll do that for each one that we removed earlier. Once that's all back in place, we can remove the strap and that'll finish up your installation and look at the Draw Tite Class II custom fit trailer hitch receiver on our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek.

2019 Subaru XV Crosstrek

This is the second hitch I've bought from etrailer, this time for my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek so I can use a hitch-mounted bike rack. I tried to buy the same Draw-Tite 36644 from a "cheaper" retailer, but they never delivered it and I had to cancel the order. etrailer delivered the hitch in just a couple of days AND matched the price of the other retailer! Installation was pretty easy - removing the muffler is a must! I did it completely alone, which is doable, although definitely would have been easier with a second set of hands. I'd recommend having on-hand an 11/16" DEEP socket, as two of the bolts are too long to use a standard socket for the nut. And one of the nuts isn't really accessible with a socket at all so I used a 11/16" box-end wrench . Also, I measured the bolt-to-bolt distance (which was 35") before taping the spacer blocks onto the bracket to make sure I had the spacing between them right. 655723

Quality product, quick shipping, and good customer service! The box was missing the pin/ clip for the hitch and customer service handled the issue professionally and processed a replacement the following day. Install was straight forward with the provided instructions. A strap to hold the dual exhaust out of the way on my 09 Subaru Legacy sedan really helped with a jack stand as extra support. As others have mentioned a second set of hands to hold the bar in place while inserting the mounting bolts was quite necessary. Looks great on my vehicle and worked like a charm. Towed a 5' x 8' cargo trailer across the country MA to Co and back without issue. Makes it easy to couple or uncouple so you can be on your way at a moment's notice. Thank you etrailer! 559757

It's rather straight forward to install. It took me about an hour and removing the muffler is a must. It's easier than it sounds. Fish wire is supplied to install the bolts and brackets in the frame rails. The fitment is perfect and it doesn't look big and obvious. The only difficult part was lifting the hitch up to the car and installing the nuts and washers. If you have someone to help, I'm sure it would go a tad quicker. 587771

Its been a year since Ive had the hitch. We went on a 5500 miles road trip and attached a cargo carrier with 150lbs+ of camping equipment. It worked really well and made travelling so easy! All while remaining rather inconspicuous when not being used.

Installed the hitch on a 2018 Crosstrek, video instructions were very good, the kit was excellent, everything fit where it was supposed to be. Installed the hitch without help, Used jackstands to support it while I started in the nuts. Very easy to install, no modifications needed. 541604

It was pretty easy about an hr of work. You don’t need to use any jack if you’re on a crosstrek subaru 2018-2019 you can go under the car easily and work and get your remember to remove the muffler. Easy work good job! 613779

Was able to install this with no issues with one person. Never needed to remove the stock muffler either in 2018 Crosstrek. - Rolled car up backwards on ramps - Pried off rubber hole covers - Fished the washer / bolts in place - note - leave the wires on the bolts! - Holding the hitch like I am doing a bench press, lifted it passenger side first. Let the exhaust pipe hold the side while I pushed up the drive side. - Fished the wires through the hitch holed and pushed flush with bolts through holes. - hand tightened bolts on one side. Did the same on the other. - impact drill with extension (Note, flexible extension is needed). torqued tight. done about an hour install one person. I have very low mechanic experience. I couldn't even tell you what a starter looks like or even change brake pads. More of a DIY person. This was very smooth install. looks great and strong. 655805

I ordered this hitch on a Wednesday and it came to the house in three days and was on the car that Friday evening. Everything I have ordered from etrailer.com has been good quality. This hitch fit like it was supposed to and was relatively easy to put on the car. Good people to do business with. 738004

Everything about this was awesome, I got it installed in about an hour and a half without dropping the muffler or lifting the car. Took some problem solving skills and the help of my car jack to hold it in place. Can’t wait to toss on a bike rack and give it a go! Will recommend and order from here again. Shipping was fast and everything arrived perfect! 727114

Excellent turn around time w tracking info along the way. Very happy with the quality and fit of the hitch. Truly a "NO DRILL" install. In a little over an hour with a jack, tie strap and a couple of beers and I was in business. Solo install. Clean look. Very pleased. Thanks again. Will be back. 722518

Well made, fit perfectly and online instruction video was spot-on. Warning: don't attempt a shortcut to the etrailer instruction video. It would make the process more difficult and possibly dangerous. As it is, the hitch is a bit heavy for one person to lift into place easily and hold while bolting into place. So plan a method for that if you are working alone and have all tools ready. I would caution that great care be taken if working alone. You don' t need the hitch falling on you. 719655

This is a heavy duty hitch. Husband only fussed a little installing it. He did not drop the exhaust as the directions suggested to do, so I guess it would have been easier if he did that. Looks great on my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. 698672

Simple enough. Would have saved myself much more time had I had another person to help me and a way to get the car up a little higher. Despite this it took me roughly an hour and a half. Pretty sturdy but the real test will come once it stops raining so I can put the bike rack on and see how it holds up. 612060

I burn through cars like most people change clothes. I can’t remember all the cars that I have put hitches on, but I can say everyone came from Curts and etrailer. They always go above and beyond. Everything fits, everything is included, and the instructions and video clips make it easy. If there is ever a problem they fix it with a simple phone call. They are the best! 610796

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

  • Will There be Ground Clearance Issues with Installing Draw Tite Hitch 36644 on 2018 Subaru Impreza
We haven't had any ground clearance issues with any of the trailer hitches we offer for your 2018 Subaru Impreza including the Draw Tite part # 36644 that you mentioned. When we installed the 2 inch hitch part # 76209 on a 2018 Impreza like yours we found that it had 10 inches from the top of the hitch opening down to the ground when installed. So from the bottom of the smaller hitch size to the ground would be right at 8-1/2 inches. Which doesn't seem like a lot, but since the rear...

  • What Drawbar Length Should be Used on 2018 Subaru Crosstrek?
The end of the receiver on Draw-Tite # 36644 is about even with the back of your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, as you can see in the accompanying photo. So without having to worry about any clearance issue and Draw-Tite drawbars # 3592 and # 3593 are the same in every way except for length, the truth is neither of them are "better" and you will be fine with either option. Both drawbars come with a pin and clip, so the only other thing you'd need is a hitch ball, # 19256 for a 1-7/8" ball or #...

  • Ground Clearance Difference Between Class II and III Draw-Tite Hitches on a 2018 Subaru Impreza
We haven't installed either Draw-Tite # 76209 or # 36644 on a 2018 Subaru Impreza so I can't tell you the exact measurements on your car but I went out to our warehouse (safety toe covers and all) and compared the two hitches. The lowest point of both hitches is actually the outside "wings" and not the receiver tube. Both of them are the same at about 10-1/2 inches from the mounting locations. The measurement at the reveiver tubes are about 1/2 an inch difference with the Class II,...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2018 Subaru Crosstrek for Using Hitch Cargo Carrier and Towing Utility Trailer
You are correct that both 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitches are made for your 2018 Crosstrek, but we always recommend going for the 2-inch size for their usually higher weight capacity and broader compatibility with accessories like cargo carriers and bike racks. There are simply more options for these items in the 2-inch size. I suggest the Draw-Tite 2-inch Class III hitch # 76209 because it offers the highest tongue weight rating of any hitch made for your car, 675-lbs, and because it...

  • Is There a Recommended Drawbar for 1-1/4" Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on 2019 Subaru Crosstrek
Thank you for all of the information! Essentially you can use almost any drawbar that has a 1-1/4" shank for your application but Draw-Tite does recommend using the Drawbar # 36051 for the Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36644 on your 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. This has a 5/8" rise/1-1/4" drop and is compatible with hitch balls that have a 3/4" shank like the 1-7/8" # 19256 or the 2" # 19258. I have attached a link to a helpful article showing you how to determine is the rise/drop of this drawbar...

I can happily confirm for you that the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 36644 is truly a no-drill install on your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek; it is a bolt-on installation and you will only need to lower your exhaust temporarily in order to install the hitch. For wiring which will allow you to power your trailer's lights you need Wiring Harness # 118467 which will give you a 4-flat connector. If you will be doing light towing with this hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite Ball mount # 36051 which comes with the pin and clip.
