Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Chrysler 300 - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2012 Chrysler 300, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class II Trailer Hitch receiver with the 1-1/4-inch by 1-1/4-inch opening. Part number is 36548. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, if you get down low, you'll see that cross tube a little, but just normal standing around, it's going to remain a little bit hidden us for, which is nice. The main part you'll see is going to be our safety chain connection plate here and our 1-1/4-inch receiver tube opening. See that does have the reinforced strap around the end to give us a little extra support there. The plates are also going to do a good job of stiffening that up for us. You can see the safety chain connection points are here.

They're nice and large and open, should be able to get whatever kind of chain connected that you'd like. We've got 1/2-inch diameter pinhole here on the side. It's going to work really well with class II accessories. You'll see there's not a ton of space in between the plate here and the bottom of the car, so you want to be sure whatever you decide there, it's going to be of a smaller size or smaller diameter. When it comes to towing, we're going to have a 300-pound tongue weight rating. That's the maximum downward force we'll be able to put here at our receiver tube opening.

We're going to have a 3,500-pound gross trailer weight rating. It's going to be the total weight of our trailer and anything that we load up on it. Now, of course, we want to look in the manual of the Chrysler, see what its rate for, and we can go off of whichever of those numbers are the lowest. Now, a couple measurements that are going to be important in selecting your ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier, will be the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening, we've got about 10-1/2 inches. Then, from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 5-1/2. Now, to begin our installation, if your vehicle is equipped with the chrome exhaust rings, you'll want to take those off. There's just going to be 2 bolts right here in the back side.

It'll be the 10 mm socket for them, and we'll just back those up. We also want to get the bolt that's right on the top. I'll just slide that back, down, and out. We'll go do the same thing for other side. Now, with those out of the way, we'll look right above, you can see where our rubber hangers are.

We've got 1 here on the back, 1 here on the front. We'll use out 13 mm, we just want to back those out. We'll go do the same thing on our other side. Now, we're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant here on our middle hangers. It's on each side of this rear differential here, and these we're going to slide off. Now, we're going to have a small band clamp on the Y-N-R 00:03:20 exhaust here. What we're going to do is loosen this up, and now we want to separate the driver side exhaust from the passenger side right at this point. We'll just set this aside. Now on our driver side we're going to be using the connection point here and here. The rear one actually has a weld nut, so that's the one we'll use our hex bolt on. We want to be sure that we clean this weld nut out, using part number 814092 here. Just clean those threads out. That way our bolt will thread in easily. That'll be good there. Now, for this, we're going to go through our attachment point with our fish wire, and we want to come right back out the access hole. Spacer block will go in and then we'll thread on our carriage bolt. We'll want to feed our spacer block in separate from our bolt, and then we can just pull it down and give it twist to make sure its come down and fully engage the block. Now on our passenger side we're using that hole location and this hole location, and we've got the same access holes. These are both going to be carriage bolts, so we'll need to fish wire these in. We can do the same thing to the one that's in front of it. Now, we can pull our fish wires off and we're ready to pull down our appearance panel here on the bottom. Now, to pull down our panel here, we're going to have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 nuts to remove. It'll be a 10 mm. Then, with an 8 mm we can remove the 4 across the back. We'll just pull that down and that's going to be returned to our customer as well as all the hardware. Now, with an extra set of hands, we're going to raise our hitch up into position. We'll guide it over the passenger side exhaust and then right up into place here on the driver side. I'll get a bolt started on this side, and then I can help hold it while my partner gets a nut started on the other side there. Now, with 1 started on each side, our hitch will rest there and we can get our other 2 started. We use a serrated washer on each of our attachment points. One is going to have the bolt going through it. The other 3 will have nuts threaded up below them. We just want to make sure that the teeth of that washer are facing up toward the hitch. We'll take just a quick look, we'll be sure we got our hitch centered on the vehicle there and then we can snug down our hardware. Then, we'll torque all 4 fasteners down appropriately. Now, we'll get our exhaust reinstalled. We want to tuck it up on our inside the fender well there first, and then we'll slide it in. Just slide it until it gets to that little set screw on top there. That'll tell us we've got it in far enough, and then we're ready to tighten it down. Now, we'll put our exhaust hangers and our exhaust bolts back in place. We're going to use a little more lubricant on our forward hangers here and we'll slide those back on. Now, we'll get our chrome tips put back in here. Since we've got our 3 fasteners started, we'll want to snug them down. Now that we've got everything back in place, that's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class II Trailer Hitch receiver, part number 36548, on our 2012 Chrysler 300.

2006 Dodge Charger

Fit perfectly on my 06 Charger RT. Wish I had bought a tap before attempting to install. Also, wish I had noticed that it comes with 2 different bolt types. Not a 30 min install. 4 hours because I had to tap out my threads and wrestle with duel exhaust. Some of that time was driving around shopping for a tap. 184762

Great product. On my previous hitch (also ordered here at etrailer) installed on my wife's car, there has been some paint pealing & surface rust forming. So this time before installing I coated it with plasti-dip and then a coat of spraypaint to harden the plasti-dip to take away the rubbery feel. Have done this to my rims and they have lasted for over 8 years now with no wear. Probably could have used truck bed liner to achieve same effect. My car is a V6 so I only have to deal with slightly dropping one muffler from it's bracket during installation. Since I was working alone, to better hold the muffler out of the way so I can get my hands up there to thread the bolts thru the frame holes, I used a small cut 2x4 piece of wood to wedge in between the muffler and frame. Also gives more room to use a socket wrench. BTW - those little wires that thread onto the bolt to fish thru the holes in the frame - Awesome - thank you etrailer! I did not need to cuss during this installation :-) 448843

I pull a 8 ft long trailer with (2) 55 lbs kayaks. we go on very short trips. the " part with the ball" is very loose when you put it in the hitch even after tightening the bolt as tight as possible. I know it needs to be some what loose in order to slide it in the hitch, but when I drive down the road without the trailer, the hitch rattles, with bolt TIGHT. I don't know if adding another bolt would help or not..?? But I really don't like my car to rattle from anything. Thank you. 249910

Installation was pretty straight forward. It will behoove you to have a proper exhaust hanger removal tool. Would give it a 5 star but the protective packaging was a bit anemic and my receiver showed up with cosmetic damage. A little touch up paint and it was fine. 504255

The customer service with etrailer is just outstanding! My hitch was shipped just one hour after I placed the order. Also, I accidentally ordered two hitches when I place my order online and two were promptly delivered. I was able to return the unwanted hitch and get a credit in only 1 day! Great product, great customer service and Amanda was amazing to work with on all of my interactions with etrailer.com. 338232

2016 Dodge Charger

Draw Tite 1-1/4 Class 2 Hitch in stalled on a 2016 Dodge Charger SRT 392. Well made hitch. Easy to follow video online. Took about an hour. The SRT has 2 exhaust temp sensors that you need to unplug, and that was the only difference in the install video. The kit came with very useful pre threaded pieces of mechanics wire. These made installing the bolts very easy. The hitch sits up tight against the bottom of the rear valence so it adds the minimal to the clearance. I bought this to attach my bike racks to and the drawtite was the only one that said it did not need stabilizing straps to use a bike carrier. I was worried about it dragging. My front drags lightly on my driveway. My hitch did not. I am using a 1 Up USA carrier but any 1-1/4 mount will work. The SRT 392 is lower than standard chargers so really steep driveways may scrape. I am pleased with the product, price, instalation. Thank you E-Trailer. 310183

2005 Chrysler 300

I purchased this on Saturday and it arrived on Wednesday. The video was an awesome help. My 2005 300 was just as shown. Since my car was 7 years old at the time, the only issue I had was with the threaded holes. I did need to run a tap (re-threading) through the holes due to rust. Other than that, it went just as shown. I did this in my garage with a normal 2 ton jack and some stands. It took me about an hour and a half including cleanup. I also purchased the plug in wiring and talk about easy. The only thing I did different than the video was with the ground wire. I attached it to the stud on the body shared by the battery ground wire rather than drill another hole. Great product. I also need to say that everything (except the tap) came included that was needed to install the hitch. It looks great. 77397

Installation was simple. A problem accessing the holes under the muffler but was able to do it with a friends extra set of hands. The instructions could use a slight modification. Step 2 says to "run the M12 bolts into the existing weldnuts to clean dirt or debris from weldnut:" This is great for cars who do not travel on road where they put down salt to melt snow. I ended up breaking the head off the bolt because of the corrosion. It got stuck and wouldn't move. Taking a tap to clean out the threads did the trick on the other existing weldnuts on the car. Not so much for end users but for the delivery guy and my self to carry home the box was well designed with two handle holes on either side, on opposite ends of the box. Made for really easy handling of such a heavy boxed item. Kudos to the engineer with enough practicality to include this. 41605

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Availability of a Trailer Hitch to Fit a 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat
  • The Draw-Tite Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 36548, will fit a 2016 Dodge Challenger if your vehicle does not have the quad-tip exhaust. Since your model is the Hellcat, I am assuming that your vehicle will have the quad-tip exhaust. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, # C12064. This hitch is designed to fit either exhaust model of the 2016 Dodge Challenger. The Curt hitch uses the 1-1/4 receiver opening and has a max tongue weight rating of 350 lbs. The Curt hitch...

  • Least Visible Hitch Recommendation for a 2016 Dodge Charger
  • The least visible hitch we have for your 2016 Dodge Charger Scat Pack is going to be the Draw Tite # 36548 that you referenced. This hitch has a 1-1/4 inch opening which would be smaller than the 2 inch hitches and due to it's safety chain loop design would be less visible than the Draw Tite. This hitch fits all models of the 2016 Charger as well. The hitch has more than enough capacity to tow your trailer but you would need to check the owners manual of your vehicle to be sure you don't...

However, the Curt Class II # C12064 and Curt Class III # C13093 do have the receiver opening welded under the tube unlike the Draw-Tite Class II # 36548 which is welded even with the cross tube.. None of them completely conceal it up under the fascia. The Class II is a 1-1/4 inch receiver and the Class III is a 2 inch receiver. You should also know that Curt requries the use a stablizer...

  • Modifications Needed for 2014 Chrysler 300S To Install Class II Trailer Hitch
  • According to the installation instructions for the Draw-Tite Class II trailer hitch, part # 36548, there is no cutting or modification if the bumper fascia required (see linked instructions). However, on 2011 and newer vehicles, there's a plastic appearance panel under the vehicle that would need to be removed and left off the vehicle. There is a trailer wiring harness available, part # C56145. If you'll be towing with this hitch, you'll need a ball mount like # 36051 but remember to...

  • How Visible is Draw-Tite Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver on 2017 Dodge Challenger
  • Unfortunately, we haven't had the chance to install the Draw-Tite # 36548 on a Dodge Challenger and the submitted photos are all older than what you're looking for. With that being said, the look of the hitch on your 2017 probably won't be a lot different. The receiver tube comes straight out of the cross beam so it will likely still be pretty visible under the rear bumper like in the picture.
