Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ford Escape - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on this 2018 Ford Escape, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 36524.Here's what our hitch looks like installed. Now the first thing you'll notice about this hitch is that even though our crosstube sticks below the vehicle, it does follow the lines of our vehicle nicely giving us a nice clean look. On the side of our receiver, you'll find our industry standard 1/2" diameter hitch pinhole to secure any of our hitch-mounted accessories. You can pick up a pin and clip separately on our website as part number PC2. Welded on the bottom of our receiver is our plate-style safety chain loops. Now, these have a very large opening, so we shouldn't have much problem with any hooking on most safety chains from our trailer. Now, this particular hitch is going to work great for you if you already have Class I and Class II accessories, such as bike racks and cargo carriers.

On the back of our receiver opening, you'll find this collar that's welded on to help give us a finished look and to help reinforce the opening giving a little added strength. This hitch features a 300 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 3,500 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull. You'll want to make sure you consult the owner's manual of your Escape and not exceed what the vehicle's rated for. Go by whichever number's less. Now, for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. You're looking at about 13" from the ground to the top of the 1-1/4" receiver opening and about 3" from the center of the hitch pinhole through the most part of the back bumper.

Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we're going to be working on the driver side of our vehicle. Having a look at the frame rail on the driver side, we'll find three holes, one here, one here, and one here. The two on the sides are where our hardware's going to come out and secure out hitch. This one in the middle is where we're going to insert our hardware through and then pull it out through the holes on the side with our pull wire. Our passenger side of the vehicle is the exact same.

It's a mere image of this. Now, for our hole here where our hardware's going to be inserted through, we may need to enlarge it slightly or make a bigger opening. You can just take a wrench, you can kind of bend down on it. Now, alternatively, instead of using a wrench, you can also use a file or rotary tool, if you need to, to help enlarge the opening a little bit.Now that we have our hole enlarged enough and opened up that our hardware passes through easily, we can now take our pull wire. We'll go through our forward hole, out our access hole. Take one of our blocks, place it on the wire, insert that into our frame.

We'll thread out bolt onto the wire. Get that inside the frame. Make sure that pull through a hole easily and we'll push it back in the frame. Now, we'll go through a rear hole with another pull wire. We'll come out our access hole, place on a block, thread on another bolt. Place the bolt inside the frame. We'll make sure it pulls through easily, and then we'll make sure it goes back inside the frame as well. Now, we'll repeat the same process for the other side. Now with an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch into position and feed our pull wires through the corresponding holes on the hitch. We'll raise it up and pull the bolt through one at a time, one on each side, and we'll remove the pull wire. We'll place on a conical tooth washer with the teeth facing the hitch making sure we don't push the hardware into the frame, and we'll thread on one of our nuts. Now, we'll repeat the same process for the other location. With all of our hardware now in place, we can tighten it down using an 11/16 socket. We'll repeat the same process on the other side. Now, we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. That completes our look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 36524, on this 2018 Ford Escape.

Easy to mount. Cutting of heat shield as shown in video is not needed on this model etrailer please consider shipping in a box. The shrink wrap did a poor job of protecting the finish and is a project to remove without damaging the paint 405371

High quality product. I've had it a year, hauled bikes, pulled trailers, and never had an issue. This is my second receiver hitch through etrailer.com. Their service is great and products are strong. Highly recommend. 520002

I got the hitch for a 2018 Escape S to haul a trailer and use a bike carrier. It is visible and hangs down lower than other models, but I didn't need to lower the muffler to install it. It fit perfectly, all the holes lined up and I pulled the bolts through with ease. I didn't want to loose the bolts after removing the pull wires so I fabricated a flat plastic clip to keep them in place. This is my 2nd hitch from Etrailer and I recommend them to everyone. 567803

Great product. Installation was pretty painless. No cutting, drilling, or tweaking of the vehicle frame. I did have to grind the heads on the bolts but that was quick and easy. Get a helper if you can, but I was able to it all by myself, with the help of some jack stands. All in all, about 3 hours of leisurely uninterrupted work. As others have said, Install the electrical kit first. Also makes it way easier. 732678

Very solid workmanship on the product. It installed as easy as installing a trailer hitch goes. But you are lifting up a heavy object under a vehicle to line up and bolt into place in tight places, and that is never "easy". One big thing that others have noted is in the video they cut away some of the exhaust shielding - and this was not necessary. You also do not have to remove the exhaust supports. I did find enlarging the access hole was needed, and I also ground off one side of the top of the carriage bolt very helpful. 619693

The wires to install the bolts on the hitch were ingenious. They made the installation easy where it would have been impossible without them. The hitch is working great. The only problem is that the foot actuated door opener does not work as well now that the hitch covers it a little. 619405

The class II hitch (PN 36524) installed on my Ford Escape easily and exactly as described in the included instructions and the excellent video on the website. I installed it alone with some wood blocks and a large tweezers to hold the bolts in place after removing the spring wires. I also installed the wiring harness (PN 118715). The video shows how to install the harness an the outside of the vehicle. I could not find a video for an internal installation that I wanted but the written instructions were sufficient. etrailer's website and support information is excellent. 572204

I installed this hitch on my 2018 Ford Escape. It fit perfectly - all the holes lined up with the frame holes and it cleared the muffler and twin tailpipes with ease. Fishing the bolts through the frame was much easier than I thought thanks to the special wires included with the hitch. I did this installation alone and without a lift, just laying on the garage floor. Even with those handicaps it only took an hour. The hardest part was lifting the hitch into place. I used some 2x4s to prop the hitch up and hold it in its proper position. Installing the bolts and nuts was then an easy matter. eTrailer.com shipped extremely fast. I like their website because they have the Installation Instructions available to download. You can read them over and see what you are getting into before you buy. I also like the photos of the hitch installed on the vehicle. You can see the finished appearance. 556466

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

  • Hitch for 2015 Ford Escape That Does Not Block Lift Gate Sensors
If you install the Draw-Tite hitch # 36524 on your 2015 Ford Escape your rear lift gate sensors will be partially blocked. Usually the center sensor is affected. But we do have a similar Draw-Tite hitch, part # 36529, that will NOT interfere with any of the sensors. Installation is shown in the linked video and written instructions. The hitch includes all required hardware to mount it and no drilling is required.

  • Why is the Stabilizer Strap Needed for the Curt Class II Trailer Hitch
Curt requires the use of a stabilization strap when using non trailer loads on their trailer hitches to maintain the warranty on the trailer hitch. You are correct when you say that the weight of the Thule Vertex rack and the weight of your bikes are well under the weight capacity of the hitch, however, Curt feels that a stabilization strap is required when carrying hitch mounted accessories on their trailer hitches. The stabilization strap not only takes some of the weight and stress...

  • Hitch Pin or Locking Hitch Pin for 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
For a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver the hitch pin size needed is 1/2 inch diameter. Whether it is a Class I or Class II trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite # 36524 you mentioned, you will use the same size pin and clip like # F-4. If you would like a locking hitch pin for this size hitch receiver, my favorite is the Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 1-1/4" Hitches - 2-3/8" Span # 63147 which is a threaded pin to give any hollow shank accessory the anti-rattle function as well...

  • Will Hands Free Sensor Still Work With Trailer Hitch on 2018 Ford Escape
Yes the hands-free lift device will still work after you install the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 36524 in your 2018 Ford Escape. If you take a look at the accompanying photo you can see that you will need to kick your feet to the sides of the hitch as opposed to the center but the hands-free liftgate will still work for you just fine. For wiring which will give you a 4-way connector and allow you to power your trailer's lights you need Wiring Harness # 118715. The ball mount you need for...

  • How to Remove Trailer Hitch and Hardware from 2017 Ford Escape
On your 2017 Ford Escape you can best remove the hardware from your frame by basically reverse installing the hitch. This would include using the fish wire to keep track of your bolts to ensure they don't remain in the frame. If you were to lose a bolt in the frame you would basically use the same access hole used for installation to attempt to pull the loose hardware out the frame using whatever materials you have access to for assistance. I've attached a video as well as the installation...

For a 1-7/8 inch diameter ball use # 19256 rated for up to 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight. For a 2 inch ball use # 19258 rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. I checked with the manufacturer, and the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75758 does fit your 2019 Ford Escape SE, so long as your Ford does not have the factory Class II Towing Package. If you do have that towing package you will need Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 36524 instead, which is a smaller hitch with less capacity.
