Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Nissan Altima - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on this 2017 Nissan Altima you'll be having a look at, and being shown how to install, the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number: 24796. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. One nice thing about this hitch is that it's very well tucked up underneath our vehicle, and behind the vehicle, so you don't have to worry about running your shin into it or having it stick out past the bumper causing an obstruction. It's a nice clean look on our Altima. On the side of our receiver you'll find our industry standard 1/2" diameter hitch pin hole for securing any of our hitch-mounted accessories. Welded onto the bottom of our receiver is our rolled steel tubular design safety chain loop, which is easy to hook onto for most sized chains.

This hitch features a 200 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 2,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it's rated to pull. You'll want to consult with the owner's manual of your Altima and not exceed the limits of the hitch or the vehicle itself when towing. Just go by whatever number is lowest. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 9-1/2" from the ground to the top of the 1-1/4" receiver opening, and about 7" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rearmost part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we'll open up our trunk.

We've already gone ahead and removed all of our floor coverings so we don't drill into them. You can leave your spare tire in position. All right. Now we need to remove our mufflers on both sides of the vehicle. We'll find a clamp right here, which holds it to our pipe.

It's a 15mm nut. We'll loosen these nuts. Now we'll unbolt this exhaust hanger right where our mufflers meet our Y-pipe. There are two 12mm bolts. Now we'll grab our mufflers and wiggle them off our Y-pipe.

Okay. Once we have it disconnected off our Y-pipe, we can take our muffler and slide it towards the rear of the vehicle, and it will come off.Okay, now with an extra set of hands, raise the hitch up and slide it all the way back against the bulkhead, and we'll mark our holes with a paint marker. And with them marked, we'll take it down. Okay. With our holes marked, we'll now take a small drill bit and drill a pilot hole right through the middle of them. You can see where our pilot holes came up on the inside of our trunk now. It's easier to drill going down so that's what we're going to do. We'll enlarge it to the final size as indicated in the instructions. I'm using a step bit for this. Now we'll take some RTV silicone, which we have available on our website, go around the holes. This will help any exhaust fumes or moisture getting inside the vehicle. We'll take our plate, center it over the holes. We'll even put more silicone around the holes there, and we'll drop down our carriage bolts. And we'll do the same for the other side. Here's a quick tech tip for you. Before we raise the hitch into position, it's a good idea to put a heavy object over the top of your carriage bolts. This'll prevent them from being pushed back inside the vehicle when you're raising the hitch onto the bolts. Now, with an extra set of hands, we'll raise the hitch into position and push it onto our carriage bolts. And to make it easier, I just have a 17mm socket on one of the nuts right now, and I'll just get one of the nuts started to help hold it in position because we need to have a lock washer underneath the nut. Put another nut in the socket, hold a lock washer in place with my other hand, and then start the nut. Once I have that one in I can remove the nut on the other one and put the lock washer underneath.Okay, now that we have both of our nuts in place with lock washers underneath, we'll snug them down. With all of our hardware snugged down, we'll now torque it to the amount specified in the instructions. Okay, with our hitch torqued down and in place, we'll now reinstall our exhaust. We want to make sure we put all of our stuff back in place, and we're ready to hit the road. And that completes your look at, and being shown how to install, the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number: 24796, on this 2017 Nissan Altima.

I received the item that I ordered, watched the installation video and installed it on my vehicle. The application was easy and it took about an hour because I don’t have a lift. Still putting my car on ramps made it easy to work with and it looks great. I would recommend this product to anyone. Thanks again for a great product and it looks great on my car and it’s hardly noticeable. Works great for a bike rack. 674715

The trailer hook-up works great. I used it to haul a trailer from Ohio to N.M. I also used it to haul a trailer from Ohio to Florida. The hitch preformed like a dream. I have it on my 2010 Nissan Altima . 542697

2012 Nissan Altima

The hitch fit my 2012 Altima perfectly and was a breeze to install on my own. It works great with my bikerack. The only issue I had was removing my muflers at the clamps which were rusted tight. I ended up taking the car to a shop to heat and remove them for me. I wasn’t able to heat them enough outside when it was windy and below freezing. 585279

I ordered this hitch because it said that the drawbar and pin were included in the description. When it showed up there wasn't a drawbar or pin in the box. I emailed etrailer and got a response within just a few minutes. I figured that it was going to be the usual "prove that it's missing" hassle that other stores have had me go through in the past with filing a report with the company that shipped it and endless emails that eventually lead you to give up. I was pleasantly surprised when they asked me if the box was damaged and if I was sure that the drawbar wasn't in the box then simply sent one out to replace the missing one. A few days later and the drawbar showed up in my mailbox, no hassles or any hoops to jump through. From now on, whenever I need another hitch or any other thing they have on their website this will be the place I go to. Thank you etrailer for not putting me through the ringer. 239075

The hitch was received quickly, and near perfect condition ( a bit of paint is scraped off of sharp corners). The boxes have a hard time containing a hitch, and small holes are created from handling, then paint is worn off of the portion that protrudes. A bit of touch-up & It looks very nice. Install was no problem, probably about 40 minutes total. Looks very proper . 325053

This is the third trailer hitch I have purchased from Etrailer.com. Each one has arrived in a very timely manner with no missing parts and nothing damaged. Prior to my purchases I have viewed the installation videos which were very helpful. The written installation instructions that accompanied each trailer hitch were complete and easy to understand. The wiring harnesses were a perfect match to each vehicle. 105214

The hitch and wiring harness have worked without fault. I am quite happy with the product a year later.

This is a very high quality product and well built. Installation was a challenge. I do a lot of DYI projects, but this was a challenge. You need some way to keep it place while installing it. It is very heavy. I am also not sure that removal of the heat shields is a great idea. I bent mine out of the way, but bending them back was a challenge. If you have the means to install this yourself, it is a great product, but if you don't, you may want to find someone to install it for you. I would recommend this https://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Adapters/Brophy/HT5R.html if you want to get some height. I install this into an 2014 Altima 3.5. 502252

I wanted to be able to tow a light trailer and this hitch receiver is just perfect for that. It's sturdy and reliable. The instructions for installing were right on. the only surprise was that I needed to borrow a pipe expander for putting the mufflers back on, but it all went very well. I'm very happy with it. 489112

1 year after purchase, I am mostly happy with this receiver. It was a pain to install, mainly due to the design of my 2011 Altima, but I knew that going in thanks to the instructions and videos on etrailer. My only hesitation to give it 5 stars is the surface rust inside the receiver tube. I'm not sure how, but it seems like they could figure out a way to make that look better for longer. However, the hitch has worked perfectly in the light towing (~600lb) I do. 524293

Comments
Unfortunately, due to the metal on metal contact that the finish on the interior of the receiver tube experiences, theres really not much that could be done to prevent the finish from being abraded. A thin coat of grease on the shank of the ballmount or hitch mounted accessory will be the best bet to provide some protection.

Service from etrailer and product quality are both great! Installed easily, a perfect fit on the car, very happy. My only issue is the damage that happened in shipping. The hitch had no padding or packing materials in the box to secure the hitch inside the box. As a result it slid freely inside the box punching holes through the cardboard and chipping paint off. These impacts also loosened the parts inside scratching up the bar as seen in my pictures near where I installed the trailer light plug. A little bubble wrap, wadded paper, or foam could have prevented the damage completely. The cardboard box was not dented, other then the holes punched from the inside out by the hitch parts as they slid and slammed into the sides of the box. 66882

I purchased this rack just before Christmas in 2018, I wasn't able to put it on my car until summer 2019. It has worked very well. It took about 3 hours to install. I borrowed a friends car ramps. The most difficult part was loosening the muffler and threading the nut on the bolt while trying to hold everything steady from underneath. You definitely need help. Overall, I would purchase this again for another vehicle and it is great to have a rack on my car! 732076

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for Carrying Bike Rack for 2018 Nissan Maxima
The hitch I recommend for your 2018 Nissan Maxima is the Draw Tite part # 24796 because unlike the Curt that fits your vehicle it does not require a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack. I attached a picture of what the hitch looks like installed as well as an install video. This will work great to carry your Thule T2 part # TH9045 too.

  • Comparing Draw-Tite and Curt Trailer Hitches for a 2013 Nissan Altima Sedan
As far as quality, all of the hitches for the 2013 Nissan Altima sedan are on par with each other. The Draw-Tite hitches (# 24796) undergoes additional voluntary testing procedures that other hitches do not. But both hitches, including Curt hitch # 11352, are built to meet or exceed required industry strength standards. The main difference is that the Curt hitch requires the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050, for any non-trailer load such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. Curt requires...

  • Cargo Transport Options for 2018 Nissan Altima with Moon Roof
If maximum cargo weight capacity is the goal then the way to go is to install a hitch # 24796 and to use a hitch-mount cargo carrier like one of those shown on the linked page, such as # C18110. The Class I hitch above has a 200-lb tongue weight rating, tongue weight being downward force on the hitch. So in actual pounds, this means that once you deduct the carrier's own 30-lb weight from that hitch capacity you still end up with a 170-pound maximum cargo weight. This is far more than your...

The information you provided on the Cansporter (thank you) indicates that it is designed for 2-inches hitches, so for you to use it in a 1-1/4-inch hitch you'd need an adapter like # HTAD which converts your hitch to a 2-inch receiver opening. The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2015 Altima is the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 24796. I recommend this hitch because the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C11352 requires the use of a safety strap like part # 18050 when it is used with any non-trailer accessories. Many times it can be tough to find a place to attach the safety strap. I have attached a link to an installation video for the # 24796 you can check out. As shown in the video the distance from the center...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2013 Nissan Altima Sedan that Does Not Require Drilling to Install
The Curt # C11352 and Draw-Tite # 24796 require drilling in order to install on a 2013 Altima sedan. If you're needing the hitch as an attachment point for a bike rack or other hitch mounted accessory, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite # 24796. If your owner's manual or Nissan says it's okay to tow with your Altima, you might also need the following: A ball mount Trailer wiring harness, part # 118470 2 inch trailer ball, part # 19258 1-7/8 inch trailer ball, part # 19256 Locking hitch...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack for 2013 Nissan Altima Sedan
The Curt # C11352 and Draw-Tite # 24796 trailer hitches are very much the same in terms of install. The only difference is the overall cost of the hitches and the fact that the Curt will require the use of stabilizing straps in order to maintain the warranty. So if you are looking for the less expensive hitch that won't require straps I recommend going with the Draw-Tite # 24796 for your Altima sedan. This is a Class I hitch and will require you to use a compatible bike rack. I am not...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2008 Nissan Altima Sedan
All of the trailer hitches available for the 2008 Nissan Altima require drilling for installation. The hitches are all custom the issue is that there aren't any holes in the vehicle frame to mount a hitch so drilling is required. If you want to go ahead and install a hitch you can use Draw-Tite hitch # 24796. I have linked a video showing an example installation. For a ball mount use # 3594. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19257 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. For trailer wiring you...

  • How Difficult is it to Install the Draw-Tite Hitch # 24796 on a 2014 Nissan Altima
The Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch receiver, # 24796, is one of the more labor intensive installations for a trailer hitch on the 2014 Nissan Altima. The installation of the this hitch is rated a 9 out of 10 difficulty with an average install time at around 1-1/2 hours. The difficulty is the installation has to doe with the removal the mufflers, disassembly of the trunk interior, and the drilling of four holes to mount the hitch to the vehicle. If you think this might be too difficult...

  • Installation Instructions for Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch 24796 and a 2015 Nissan Altima
There is a bulkhead underneath the 2015 Nissan Altima that will serve as a guide to line the hitch, # 24796, up properly. Once the hitch is in place you will use it as a template to drill the holes needed for installation. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a video showing an example installation for you. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I...

  • Carrying Mobility Chair on Hitch Mount Carrier on 2017 Nissan Altima
The light-duty Class I hitches made for your 2017 Nissan Altima, Draw-Tite # 24796 and Curt # C11352, both shown on the linked page, have a tongue weight (TW, downward force) rating of 200-lbs. This is true for all Class I hitches for all vehicles. While there are some lighter-weight mobility chairs on the market, such as the 54-lb Lexis Light, most mobility chairs weigh more, some well into the 300-lb range. Your hitch's TW rating should be noted on its safety sticker. This limit must...

  • Trailer Hitch and Related Towing Items for 2012 Nissan Altima
If you have the sedan version of the 2012 Nissan Altima then the 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite # 24796. If you have the 2-door coupe then instead you can use hitch # 24801. Both have a maximum trailer weight capacity of 2000-lbs. You'll need wiring harness # 118470 to operate the trailer lights. An installation article and video are linked for you. You'll also need a ball mount # 3594 which includes a pin/clip, along with a hitch ball like 1-7/8-inch # 19256...

  • Can 2012 Nissan Altima Carry Hitch-Mounted Carrier With Electric Wheelchair
I did some research on your 2012 Altima and found that the towing capacity of your vehicle is 1,000 lbs and the maximum tongue weight is 100 lbs. With the weight of the MaxxTow 30x50 Wheelchair Carrier, part # MT70106 at 85 lbs, that would not leave enough capacity for the electric wheelchair you said you need to carry. My best recommendation is to have a hitch installed and find a small trailer to load the wheelchair on. The hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite Sportframe, part...

The most popular hitch option for the vehicle is Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24796 that you have referenced. • Troubleshooting Trailer Hitch That Angles Downward
I see several problems here. The trailer hitch you referenced, # 24796, is not a fit for your 2010 Prius. The correct Draw Tite hitch is # 24847. The other problem is that you have a Class I hitch which is only rated to carry 2 bikes maximum. I recommend putting the other two bikes on a roof rack like the Yakima roof rack. This system consists of the following parts: Round 58" CrossBars # Y00409 BaseLine Towers # Y00146 RoundBar Adapter # Y03536 BaseClip Fit Kit # Y06117 You...
