Video Transcript for Breaking Down the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball

Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the CURT Trailer Ball. So this one's gonna be a 2 5/16 inch ball. It's gonna have a capacity of 20,000 pounds. So we do want to match this up with a ball mount that's gonna be able to carry at least that much. So with this ball mount, it's about 21,000 pounds. So we are limiting our ball mount by 1,000, but that's not necessarily a huge deal.

But if you did need to grab a ball mount, just make sure it kinda lines up, 'cause you do need to piece these things together just to make sure that they're all gonna work together. Might as well not limit yourself from right off the bat. Another thing to think about is which ball mount you're gonna pick, but also the thickness. So we wanna make sure that we're gonna have a platform that's at least 3 1/8 of an inch thick. So this one's totally fine.

And then looking down at the shank, we do need to make sure that the hole is going to be an inch and 1/4 in diameter, because that is the diameter of the shank of the ball. Let me take this off real quick. There we go. So as you can see up top there's hardly any play. We really want to line this up and make sure it's the same size, just because if it's any bigger, the shank, it's not going to put the ball mount and any smaller, there's going to be a lot more play.

And we really don't want that. Especially with these really heavy duty balls. We wanna make sure they are nice and snug in there just so we don't have any issues whenever we go down the road. So if you we're to upgrade with a trailer ball, I guess you could get one that's forged and machined out of one single piece of steel. This one's made of steel.

It's gonna be plenty strong, but it has a Chrome finish. The other one's just going to be a little bit stronger. But I really don't think that really matters a whole lot. One thing I would pick up is some grease for this just because there's a lot of grinding action that goes on. And with that grease, we carry here at etrailer, it's just gonna keep this finish looking nice for a little bit longer. When it comes to trailer balls, there's some that are gonna give you an inch or two in rise, so the ball itself will give you a rise. If that's something that you're interested in, you can get that here at etrailer. But this is just your standard 2 5/16 inch ball. And that's basically it for our look at the CURT 2 5/16 inch Trailer Ball..

  • Class V Trailer Hitch For 2019 Nissan Titan XD
We have exactly what you need for your 2019 Nissan Titan XD, the Curt Trailer Hitch # C15306, because this monster of a hitch is Class V rated with a towing capacity of 16,000 lbs and tongue weight capacity of 2,400 lbs. It will fit your '19 Titan XD, even if you already have the factory hitch - it will simply fit below that hitch to give you a bigger, meaner hitch. As you can see by the linked installation instructions the Curt # C15306 does not require any drilling into your truck's...

  • Best Quiet Weight Distribution Hitch For 450 to 500 lb Tongue Weight
Thanks so much for that good information, and we can get you exactly what you are looking for - a quiet weight distribution hitch that is rated correctly for your 465 lb tongue weight and provides outstanding sway control. For that the best option is from Blue Ox: - Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution with Sway Control # BXW0550 This system, which is rated for tongue weights between 350 lbs and 550 lbs, is quiet because it is a chain-style so you won't hear the noise that comes with the...

We definitely have some options available for your 2021 Audi Q8. With your trailer sitting right at 24 inches tall and the hitch sitting at 17 inches, I am going to suggest going with 7 inches of rise. The Curt Ball Mount for 2" Hitches # C45448 will have the needed 7 inches of rise and will also be able to handle up to 12,000 pounds. The Curt 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # C40008 will then attach to this ball mount. You will also need a pin and clip, like the C21500, if you do not already have...

  • Weight Distribution Hitch With Sway Control Recommendation For 600 lb Tongue Weight
We can get you set up with the perfect option for a weight distribution hitch with sway control for your 4,800 lb GVWR trailer. First let's talk about he correct rating, and it isn't double the capacity of the hitch or hitch weight, the right system is going to be one in which your loaded tongue weight falls in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity. And since tongue weight is in the 12 to 13 percent range of your trailer's GVWR, your trailer's tongue weight...

When trying to decide on a proper weight distribution (WD) system for your towing rig, you will need to know the total tongue weight (TTW) of your set-up. The total tongue weight will be a fully loaded ready to tow trailer, plus any weight located behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. You want to use a system where your total tongue weight will fall in between the WD system's tongue weight range. I have attached an article that will explain how to find the TTW of your towing rig. • Trying To Find Weight Distribution Hitch For Tent Trailer With A Crowded A-Frame
Hello Andrew, thanks for reaching out. There is not a lot of room to spare on your trailers tongue. In fact, you would almost certainly have to relocate your battery box and some of your wiring in order to install most weight distribution hitches. There is one different attachment method that would make things easier, and that is to use bolt-on chain hangers from Reese. I suggest that you use the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # RP66072. This is made for trailers with...

  • How Do You Tighten a Hitch Ball that Doesn't have Wrench Flats
If you have a bench vise you can put a cloth around the ball and use the vise to hold it so you can torque the nut to spec on ball # C40008. • How to Torque Hitch Ball When Installing into Ball Mount
We don't have a combo of the Curt Hitch Ball # C40008 and Curt Ball Mount # C45340. The ball mount is extremely heavy-duty, rated up to 17,000 pounds. I think it's safe to assume you don't have a torque wrench rated up to 450 foot pounds just laying around. In which case you'll never really measure it at 450. When tightening the ball you want to make sure you get the lock washer so that it's completely flat. One way to help you do this is to put the ball mount in your hitch receiver...

  • How Long Should Hitch Ball Shank Be to Fit Curt Forged Ball Mount # C45458
The 2-1/2 inch shank length on B&W ball # BWHB94004 might be just a bit too short for ball mount # C45458. The recommended ball, # C40008, has a shank length of 2-3/4 inches. Basically the shank has to be long enough for the nut to thread all the way on with about 3 or more threads sticking out past the bottom of the nut.
