Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - C40008 Review

Today we're going to be reviewing part #C40008. This is the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball from Curt. It's going to feature fine threads that are going to provide exceptionally tight and strong grip. This is made from a steel construction with a nice chrome finish so it's going to stand up really well against rust and corrosion. You're going to get the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball as well as the lock washer and the nut so everything that you see here is included. This unit, once installed, needs to be completely tightened down to 450 lbs. of torque. A few measurements to go over with you real quick.

The ball diameter again is going to be 2-5/16 of an inch. If we take a measurement of the shank, which is this portion right here, that's going to give us a length of 2-3/4 of an inch from the bottom of the ball platform to the very end of the shank. Now just the threaded portion looks like it's going to measure about 2-1/4 of an inch. The shank diameter is going to give us a measurement of 1-1/4 inches. Now in choosing the hitch ball, the ball shank diameter should be within 1/16 of an inch of the hitch ball hole diameter on your mount. Again, this is going to offer a hitch ball size of 2-5/16 of an inch and it's going to have the capacity of 20,000 lbs.

All that information is labeled right here on top of the hitch ball. Once you have this through the mount, the lock washer goes on the underside followed by the nut. You can go ahead and get it hand tied or you can tighten it with a wrench but you will need a torque wrench to get it to that 450 lbs. of torque that is required from the manufacturer. That's going to do it for our review of part #C40008. This is the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball from Curt. .

This hitch ball is stout!! It’s heavy and dense and made very well. This is the second one I have purchased, as this one will be installed on a lower drop Curt hitch.

I received everything that I requested in a short time even with the free shipping. The ball mount and the balls I requested and the 2-5/16th ball and the 2" ball were just what I needed. the ball cap for the 2-5/16 ball fit perfect the ball cap for the 2" was really just made for the smaller ball. I would recommend that they make a ball cap for just the 2" ball. Got it to fit but not that well. I will need breaks for my boat trailer after this season and I plan on using etrailer for those parts. will need to call them before I make purchase as Im not sure how to size them up.

Nicely plated and fits well. Without flat spots on the base to hold, I was afraid the ball would slip and turn while I tightened the nut, but I had no problem installing it on the Curt ballmount. It has great capacity, and I have no worries about it safely pulling my boat.

Works well. Has stayed tight and does the job to haul a 4 ton boat and trailer

This ball mount has served it purpose well. I purchased a new travel trailer that is heavy enough to require a weight distribution hitch when using the factory installed Class III hitch on our Dodge RAM 2500. I decided to upgrade to a Class V hitch combined with this ball mount to take delivery of the TT in order to defer decisions about a WD hitch until the actual load conditions were known. The hour trip home with this setup worked very well. Once the trailer was outfitted I was able to determine the actual tongue weight of the loaded trailer and I decided to purchase an appropriately sized Reese Straight Line WD hitch. However, this ball mount comes in handy for moving the trailer short distances without hassling with the WD system. The purchase experience through etrailer.com was first rate.

No one had a 2 5/16 inch ball in 14000 tow weight. As we had to move our trailer and as I called numerous dealers and was told not available, I reached out to etrailer. They also didn't have it but suggested I go larger in the ball so long as it fit the tow hitch and the shank. It did I'm still using it and am very happy with the product and the quick service and turn around with my order.

So far I have pulled my trailer over 10k miles with my ‘16 Ram 2500. The hitch is easy to use and really helped with sway even when empty. Best choice I could have made for my trailer.

This hitch ball looks good - the chrome finish looks too good to hook a trailer up to and it meets the weight ratings I was looking for, which is clearly stamped on the top of the ball. Now I just have to torque it up to the 450 ft lb spec required as stated on the attached tag and I will be good to go.

- C40008
by:

Good, solid product. We tow our 15,000 lb boat behind our Ford F-250 using it. You do need a pretty long torque wrench to tighten the nut to specs, and because there are no flats on the ball end, you have little choice but to damage the chrome plating in the throat a big with a pipe wrench as you tighten. But no big deal.

Ball still looks like new. Pulling a camper with it and never and issue. A of oil every time I hook it up keeps it like new and rust free.

Great Ball, works perfectly. The nut is BIG so make sure you have a big enough socket to tighten this monkey up! Put it on the hitch, then put the hitch in your receiver sideways so you can get better leverage to tighten the nut.

  • How to Torque Hitch Ball When Installing into Ball Mount
We don't have a combo of the Curt Hitch Ball # C40008 and Curt Ball Mount # C45340. The ball mount is extremely heavy-duty, rated up to 17,000 pounds. I think it's safe to assume you don't have a torque wrench rated up to 450 foot pounds just laying around. In which case you'll never really measure it at 450. When tightening the ball you want to make sure you get the lock washer so that it's completely flat. One way to help you do this is to put the ball mount in your hitch receiver...

  • How Do You Tighten a Hitch Ball that Doesn't have Wrench Flats
If you have a bench vise you can put a cloth around the ball and use the vise to hold it so you can torque the nut to spec on ball # C40008. Like you said this ball doesn't have wrench flats so there isn't really a better way than using a vise. If you do not already have a ball you could use # 63840 instead which does have wrench flats.

The TruTrack has integrated sway control which will do a much better job than systems with add-on sway control such as the Curt Weight Distribution System part # C17341 with the Curt Friction Sway Control part # 17200. Whew. That's one heavy trailer! As long as the trailer tongue weight won't exceed 1600 lbs, the # EQ64FR Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System would be ideal. This particular system is meant to be used in a Class V hitch with a 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch receiver. This is the highest rated system Equal-i-zer offers.
