Trying To Find Weight Distribution Hitch For Tent Trailer With A Crowded A-Frame

Updated 06/07/2024 | Published 05/27/2024

Question:

Im trying to find a weight distribution hitch that will attach to my tent trailer. The problem is that there is a battery and propane tray and bed support pieces that get in the way of where the brackets attach to the trailer frame. Is there another offering or attachment method? Im trying to not reduce my ground clearance if possible. Tow vehicle is a 2012 V6 RAV4, Trailer GVWR is 2720lb I was looking at the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW, but the L-bracket wont fit. In the picture, I show one side of the trailer frame but its the same situation on the other side. Thanks for any ideas

Hello Andrew, thanks for reaching out. There is not a lot of room to spare on your trailers tongue. In fact, you would almost certainly have to relocate your battery box and some of your wiring in order to install most weight distribution hitches. There is one different attachment method that would make things easier, and that is to use bolt-on chain hangers from Reese.

I suggest that you use the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # RP66072. This is made for trailers with a tongue weight between 200 and 600 lbs so it will work nicely for your camper. You can then use the Chain Hangers # RP58305 which will bolt directly to the side of the frame. This way you can hook up the WD hitch without having to relocate anything on the tongue.

Note that you will also need a shank such as part # RP69FR as well as a trailer ball with a 1-1/4" diameter shank like part # C40008 for a 2-5/16" ball or part # C69FR for a 2" ball.

Thank you for the advice! This type of option looks exactly like what I needed. I went from eager to get a better hitch setup, to disappointed it wouldn't work, and now back to eager and happy.
