Video Transcript for Americana Tire Inflation and Repair - Valve Stems - AM20906 Review

Today we're going to take a look at this bolt-in metal valve stem. Now this metal valve stem is about one and a quarter inches long. It is designed to fit through .453 diameter and .625 diameter rim holes on your trailer wheels. The valve stem is going to provide an inflation point for the tire. Now it comes with all these pieces together. It comes with the two rubber grommets. One of them will fit the .453 valve hole diameter.

The larger one will fit the .625 valve hole diameter. It comes with the washer, the nut and valve cap. Now this a durable steel construction. It's a very simple bolt-in installation. The thing you do need to remember is that the valve stem should only be installed using one of these grommets.

You don't need to use both of them, only one of them for the size hole you're putting it in. Now the industry standard part number on this is a TR-416. Again we mentioned we length is one and a quarter inches. The metal valve stem is designed to hold a maximum tire pressure of 100 psi and greater. Now what I am going to do .. When you do receive this, again I just want to give you a warning, it'll usually come with the larger grommet on the bottom, and then they'll put the smaller grommet on top.

Then they'll usually have the washer on here, the nut on here to hold it all together and the valve cap. That is somewhat how you install it, but the trick is, you do not want to use two grommets. When you get it this way that doesn't mean to use one on the bottom and one on the top. What I am going to show you is I have happen to pull a couple of different wheels here so let me just zoom out a little bit. I just wanted to show you, here's a standard eight spoke trailer wheel that you'll see a lot. This happens to be a fourteen inch one.

What you want to do is I'm just going to take the valve cap off, the nut off, the washer off, and then the rubber grommets. What you want to make sure . Now the rubber grommets. What you make sure . Now the rubber grommet size, there's only two valve holes and this will cover both of them. Now the larger grommet size, the .625 is usually for larger tires and wheels like sixteen inch on up. Anything under sixteen inch you'll usually use the .453. What you want to do . Let's just zoom in a little bit here. Here's your valve stem hole. You want to make sure the area around the hole where you're going to put the metal valve into has got a very flat area because you want it to be able . On top you're going to put this washer down over it and that needs to tighten down flat, so you do want to make sure of that. What you want to do is take the smaller rubber grommet, the .453 and just push that down on the valve stem, just like that. Then what you want to do is right where the hole is, push your valve stem right up through that hole, and push that rubber grommet into that hole. It will actually be snug enough that it will usually hold that valve in place. Then what you want to do is take your washer, drop your washer on top of there until it is flat. Take your nut, put your nut and spin it all the way down and then just snug that up until that rubber grommet bulges out a little. Then you're all ready to go. Put your valve cap on that. That gives you a nice looking valve stem on your wheel and it'll be able to hold over 100 psi or more. Now what I also want to do is we're going to take this one off. I'm going to show you what you want to do to make sure this will work on your wheel, you want to make sure that you have enough, first of all that's it's going to tighten down onto a flat area. Make sure the valve hole is not on a rounded area where you won't be able to tighten it. Make sure you have room around the valve hole for the diameter of this washer. Let's take this one out of the way and I'm going to pull . Here's another type we sell. This is a black conventional wheel. This one is going to be hard to see but let me rotate it, and you'll be able to see. Probably right back here where the hole is, you can see I'm moving my finger over it, that's where your hole is. You'll do the same thing. Again this is the smaller hole. This is a fifteen inch black spoke wheel. You'll go ahead and push it through there. Again, it'll hold it in place. Go ahead and put your washer on and again, you'll see there's enough area. It's close to the edge but it's still going to give you enough to tighten down and seal it correctly. Then the last one I want to show you that we get a lot of questions on is fitting it to a aluminum wheel. Here is a sixteen inch aluminum wheel. This one, let me scoot up just a little bit, and we'll turn it around. Right here is where your valve hole is. Now on an alloy or aluminum wheel like these that have a nice, special design to them, lots of times the hole is indented in there, so there's only a little opening around there. You got to make sure this will fit. Again this is the smaller hole, so you have the .453. Push it through just like that. Then what you want to make sure is you'll take that washer, and if that washer will drop in that hole, which is does in this one, just like that, move it up a little bit, that washer does fit flat up against. Then you can put your nut on there. Go ahead and tighten that nut down. Again, the nut fits in there. Use a thin wall socket to snug that down and then put your valve cap on and you're all ready to go. It gives you a nice metal valve stem on your aluminum to give it a good look. Again, if you happen to have a tire that's going to use over 100 psi, you do want to be able to use the metal valve stems. I'm just going to unscrew that nut and then push that valve stem up and then push that washer right out. Again, just to go over this bolt-in metal valve stem. You pick the rubber grommet. Only use one of the rubber grommets. Pick the one for the size of the hole in your wheel and then go ahead and put it through the wheel, put the washer on top, the outside of the wheel, tighten your nut down. Once it's all tightened down correctly, put your valve cap on there. Simple as that. That should do it for the review on the bolt-in metal valve stem.

Was promptly notified when the wheels I ordered were temporarily out-of-stock and told when to expect them to be shipped. The wheels and other items arrived as soon as they were received from the supplier within the week. This is great communication and excellent customer service !! Upon getting the wheels and accessories I was very pleased with the quality of everything and the wheels look fantastic !! Keep up the good work etrailer .. I would highly recommend you to others !! Thanks for everything. 370577

Wheels look great... Other parts are as expected although the cotter pins were a little smaller than the ones used on the surge controller. Only problem with my order was that the wheel caps were nested but not individually protected. One of them has some scrapes on it from rubbing inside the other and a couple of the black plastic caps have abrasions from rubbing together. 461921

Wheels came in the condition I hoped they would. Several times in the past few weeks I've ordered items that either arrived damaged or weren't what I ordered. etrailer delivered as promised as they have in the past, they're my "go-to vender" for all trailer related products! 403823

I ordered 7 Taskmaster Providers 235/85R16 G rated tires for my 44' Toy Hauler because the tires that came on it and the Goodyear Marathon tires (both E rated) I replaced those with failed. When I say failed, I mean blowouts that did severe damage to the side of my 5th Wheel trailer. It's still in the shop being repaired. After many hours of reviews everywhere I decided to try these tires. They arrived UPS in two days after I ordered and the tires look much more substantial than the Marathons or other E rated tires I've had. I ordered 7 metal valve stems too just in case the tire place didn't have stems for this 110 psi tire. Very happy with etrailer and the price was the best I found anywhere. Example...Goodyear G614 ..both made in China! I'll try to update this for the tire itself when I get some milage and confidence back on my toy hauler. 447308

I purchased these to go with the Aluminum Hi-Spec Series 6 Trailer Wheel - 15" x 6" Rim - 6 on 5-1/2 - Black - AM22652B and the tire store I took them to for installation advised they would not work in the wheel I purchased unless they drilled out the hole. Wasted my money on these. 655330

Comments

The wheel you purchased has a .453 inch diameter valve stem hole. The valve stem you received includes two different diameter grommets, one of which is compatible with a .453 valve stem hole.

Had the steel valve stems installed at a local garage in Charleston, SC. My wife and I are on a 6 week road trip of well over 2000 miles. I check the tire pressure every other day and are holding at 65 pounds on all 6 tires. These are an excellent product. 392890

I have not had to add any air to the since we increased the tire pressure to 70 psi last year. The product makes it so easy to check tire pressure. We are on a 4 week trip now and I check the 6 tires every morning. Great product, thank you!

A must for trailer wheels. Nothing worse than pulling wheels off a loaded boat trailer. All 4 valves were leaking at the base of the stem after new wheels were installed with the wrong valves on my boat trailer. I had these stems on the old wheels without fail for 15 years. They are strong and don't bend when filling high pressure tires. 544281

One of the valve stems ordered arrived with the smaller grommet missing. Called CS and was immediately taken care of. Could not send just the missing grommet so they sent another valve stem. I was so impressed with the quality and service that I ordered 5 more for the camper. Note that this was not a high dollar order, but the service was first class. 392705

We travel a lot in a fifth wheel trailer and have our share of bliw outs. The last one was because the business where we purcased new tires did not replace the valve stems as I had requested. So now I have these metal stems installed and should not have that problem again. They work great. And George at etrailer did a very good job getting them to me in a timely manner. Would recommemd them. And I will order from them again. THANKS GEORGE. 492878

Got my 2 custom aluminum trailer rims with tires today(4-06-17) they were delivered in only a few days-along with new chrome wheel lug nuts and new replacement studs and chrome screw on valve stems -took them to my local [service center] to have them mounted--got back home and installed them on the boat trailer I restored this past summer with the boat on it that I am also restoring--The rims look great. Thanks Katie for all your help with placing my order---I am a repeat customer and will tell all of my friends of the great service I received. Thank You. 366292

Ellen was very helpful (as was the tech she consulted) as I determined what wheels/tires to order. I am very satisfied with the information on the website and the result...except for one thing: I was asked what type of valve stem I wanted. I was surprised and asked if valve stems were not included. The answer was in the negative and standard rubber valve stems or metal valve stems were offered. Thinking that the metal would be more durable, I ordered a pair...and then was puzzled when the tire/wheel combination did indeed arrive with rubber valve stems installed and an envelope with a pair of metal valve stems. Had I been accurately informed re the valve stems, I would have had no need to order the metal ones. 109283

I purchased these valve stems for my camper. I was concerned I may not be able to tighten them up because there is not a lot of room around where the stem comes through the rim I watched the video they had about them and they did not say the socket size so I called and was informed a 7/16 or 1/2 socket I checked a 1/2 socket and it fit so I ordered them when they arrived it takes a 9/16 socket. So a 9/16 socket will not fit. So no way to instill them. They look like they are made nice and of quality. I just wish they had of told me the right size or showed it in there video. 470837

I am very pleased with this purchase it is a simple solid design, all metal construction. and allows me to run tire pressure monitoring sensors on the valves without worry about flexing wearing a hole in the stem. Valve comes with gaskets for two size valve stem holes. Initially i received 3 and one did not have the nut and washer. A quick painless call to etrailer.com had a replacement assembly in the mail to me that day. I was also provided a direct number back to the person who resolved the issue should there be a need to call back. • Can Westlake 235/80R16 Trailer Tires be Replaced with Westlake 235/85R16 Tires
  • The 235/85R16 size Westlakes, part # LHWL410, are an inch larger in diameter compared to the 235/80R16s part # LHWL401. So you need to make sure there's an extra half inch of clearance between the tire and the underside of the fender. You want a total of at least 3 to 4 inches of clearance. Another thing to consider is the larger tires have a maximum psi of 110 pounds and trailer tires should always be inflated to their max. This is important because the valve stems on your wheels...

My recommendation is the Provider ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # TTWTRTM2358016E which will be restricted by the wheel capacity and will allow you to use the rubber...

  • Do Trailer Tires Require Balancing with Weights?
  • Trailer Tires do not require balance weights based on their design and function. They are balanced based on high point and low point of the wheel and tire being used together. The high point is marked on the tire and will be placed in line with the valve stem on the trailer wheel. You can have them balanced using weights but you will need to use a pin plate adapter for the wheel to balance correctly as they are different that vehicle wheels. All of our combinations come ready to...

  • Can I Determine the psi Rating of a Wheel
  • Since wheels will be able to withstand the psi rating of any of the tires that are meant to fit it you will need to look at the valve stem as that is the deciding factor. If your valve stem has the rubber all the way up to the threads, like part # AM20903, then it will be rated around 65 psi. If there is some reinforcement between the rubber and the threads, like part # AM20904 or # AM20907, then your valve stem can be rated between 80 and 100 psi. The only valve stems that are rated...

  • Is a Load Range D Trailer Tire Better for Long Trips than a Load Range C of the Same Size
  • Going with a higher load range within the same tire size has some benefits. It will have a higher ply rating which means the tire will be stronger. Keep in mind though that the higher capacity does not increase the capacity of the trailer. The issue you may run into though is with the wheels. If your wheels have a psi rating that is lower than what the tires are rated for then you can end up with leaks or damage though damage isn't as likely in the short term. The psi rating for...

  • Best 14 Inch Trailer Tires for an 8,000 Pound Tandem Axle Trailer
  • The load range tire you use will depend on how many axles the trailer has and the size needed. If you are just replacing tires and not the wheels as well then I just need to know the size indicated on the tire sidewall. If you are replacing the tires and the wheels then in addition to the size I will need to know the bolt pattern of the wheels. I have included a link below to our help articles on determining wheel bolt pattern and trailer tires.

  • What Determines Maximum PSI Pressure Rating of Lion's Head Trailer Wheel LHJM513
  • For the Lion's Head 16 x 7 Aluminum Modular Trailer Wheel # LHJM513 the maximum psi pressure will depend on the specific valve stem installed when your tires are mounted. We have valve stems, all shown on the linked page, that vary in their psi pressure ratings. For higher pressures over 100-psi a bolt-on metal valve stem like # AM20906 is preferred.

  • Recommended Tires and Valve Stems for 2014 Keystone Montana 3402RL Trailer
  • The Taskmaster Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWPRG235R16 will be a good replacement for your wheels. They will fit well but will not increase the weight capacity above the 3750 of your wheels. You will always be limited by the lowest rated component for your max load capacity. For your valve stems with this combination, I recommend # AM20906 which is the only valve stem we carry rated for that psi. These combinations will work well on your 2014 Keystone Montana trailer.

  • As long as you have the clearance on your trailer you can increase the size to the 235/85-16 tires # AM10501. The psi of a rim is determined by the valve stem. You'll need one rated for over 100 psi which will be metal like # AM20906.

  • Troubleshooting Tire Blowouts on Toy Hauler Trailer
  • Everything that you described sounds normal so the only way that you'd be having blowouts it if you are exceeding the max speed limit, the weight capacity, or have an incorrect psi (according to the sidewall of the tire). The psi rating of a tire will naturally increase some during travel due to the friction from the road. Seeing 8 - 9 psi greater than what the tires are at when they are cold is completely normal. You definitely can upgrade your tires to a load range F like the Karrier...

  • Compatibility Of Chrome Wheel Lugs Nuts And Metal Valve Stem With Aluminum Sendel Series T02 Wheels
  • For your Aluminum Sendel Series T02 Machined Trailer Wheel # AM22653, the Chrome Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 1/2" (Each) # 12CLN will work great as long as you have 1/2 inch lug bolts from your hub. The Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem - 1-1/4" Long - Over 100 psi # AM20906 will not work with the 80 psi max wheels you mentioned and this wheel due to the 0.74 inch washer and the 0.62 opening on the wheel. You will instead need the rubber valve # AM20904. This combination of parts will...

  • Why Do Different Tires Have Different PSI Ratings And How Does This Impact Wheels/Rims
  • The wheels/rims are somewhat impacted by PSI ratings but are mostly limited by maximum weight capacity and are designed to fit particular bolt patterns. For example, the Aluminum Split Spoke Wheel by HWT, Item # AM22658HWT, is designed for 16 inch tires, has a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, and a maximum capacity of 3,580-lbs. Where a rim is impacted by PSI ratings is by the maximum PSI rating of a rim's valve stem. If you need a higher PSI rating then you can upgrade to a higher...

Part # AM20907 handles up to 100-psi and part # AM20906 is good for tires needing over 100-psi pressure. Note different valve stems fit different size holes in the wheels.
