Video Transcript for Review of Malone Watersport Carriers - Paddle Board - MPG384

Randy: Hey, guys, it's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at the Malone SUP swing. This is a SUP, or you can use it also with a surfboard. It's going to be a really nice storage system.Essentially we've got two of the nice large U hooks here, allows us to place our boards in. This is going to help us get them up off the ground. It's also going to help us keep from leaning them up against the wall.

Most of the time, at least with the ones we've got outside here, if they're leaned up against the wall, they generally want to fall over, if they're sitting on the floor, something's going to bump into them, scratch them and damage them, and this is just going to be a really good cost-effective way to virtually eliminate any of those issues.See we have a bracket here. This is going to mount on the wall, using the provided screws. Generally you'll want to get those into a stud to give you excellent support. These can also be used with nuts and bolts, if you're going to be putting them on a steel dock, and you can't use the provided hardware. Although the nuts and bolts aren't provided, they will do a great job of holding it in place. It has a 150 pound capacity so that's going to take care of even the heaviest SUP boards out there to be sure you get them in place.

And it has a unique design. You can see right now our bracket is locked. That would have our hook positioned squarely up against the wall, so it's not going to be like a lot of the other ones, where you get them positioned where you want them, and then all of a sudden they swing out from the wall, you're constantly trying to put them back in or you walk by and you bump into them. Then when we're ready to use it, you can see we just slide that up. We rotate that 90 degrees and it's going to lock in the extended position. So now, as we're trying to put our paddle board in there, as we're trying to get it positioned, we don't have to worry about our hook swinging back in against the wall.

I think it eliminates a lot of those issues of getting your board on there. Also you'll see we've got a tie-down ring here. Now that can be for security, if you want to use a cable lock through it, or if you're just going to be storing it outside, where wind might be an issue and you don't want it get it blown off of there.Part number 228-05852, nice set of ratchet straps. You can connect them here. Take it around your board, reconnect it. Just give you some security.

And that's going to be on both of them. Now, the hardware provided is going to be pretty standard type kind of drywall screw. You can see it here. It's got a good length to it. You get that into a stud using the four attachment points on each side. You're going to max that capacity right out at that 150 pounds. As far as dimensions go, from the very bottom of our U here to the top of the front portion of our arm, we've got 15 and a half inches, then it's going to be an additional 10 inches to the top here. So from here to the bottom of the U, 25 and a half inches.Let's see what kind of distance we've got inside the inside. We're at eight and three quarters of an inch there, so from the inside of the U here to the inside here, eight and three quarters of an inch.Something I like, if you take a look at the end there. You can see this isn't a plastic insert that's been slid inside of the tube. It's actually a cap that's going to go around the entirety of the tube. That's going to prevent that little sharp metal edge being around that outside that might cause damage to your boards. And the material here that's going to protect your board, you can see this is a very heavy-duty rubberized foam type material. It's much more dense than what I've seen on a lot of the other ones. A lot of the other ones tend to be very soft and squishy, and in my experience, over time, especially if you're going to keep them outside, those tend to degrade a lot quicker than what we get out of this material.I think that it's a good-looking type of system and it doesn't require any pins. You don't have to pull any pins up. A similar option is part number S65142, that one's from Swagman. Now, that one does already have the ratchet straps connected. So if you are going to be using it outside, that might be a good choice, but it requires you to pull a pin here, rotate your arm and then replace the pin. This one with its very quick and easy-to-use mechanism, I think just eliminates that little step there, although it's not a major step and it's not something that would keep me from buying the Swagman. I just tend to like this one a little bit more. And this one does have a 50 pound entire weight capacity to it, so all in all, I like the sturdiness that we're going to get out of this one as compared to that one. We've got powder-coated steel here, our brackets are all steel. The tube that comes around's steel, so it's going to be very nice and very durable. I think this is going to be ideal for those of you that want something that looks nice but isn't going to take up a lot of room, especially if you're going to be using this in a garage or even in an apartment for that matter. When not in use, you want it to be over against the wall, you want it to be out of the way. That's going to open up that space for you to do what you need to do in your day-to-day, and then when we are ready to store that board, we can flip them out, get them up there on the wall and get them off the floor, so they're not in the way there, we're freeing up that space. And they're a lot less likely to get damaged when they're in something like this, stored up and out of the way.All in all, I think this would be an excellent choice for anybody looking to get those paddle boards stored, whether it's going to be inside, garages, apartments, houses, things like that. Or whether you're going to keep them out on the dock.

Ask the Experts about this Malone Watersport Carriers

Do you have a question about this Watersport Carrier?

  • Can You Carry SUPs Vertically On the Side Of a Ladder Rack
  • That is certainly a pretty radical idea using the etrailer.com J-Style Kayak Carrier part # e98878 and attaching them to the vertical uprights but I am afraid I cannot recommend this nor do I see a way to attach to these uprights as it appears they are too wide and the bolts would not align between them. The Malone SUPSwing Fold Away SUP Storage System part # MPG384 I could see being able to be installed on the uprights but I cannot recommend this as that is not what they are designed for.
