If you're looking for a way to get traction in the snow without scratching your rims, these K-Summit chains are your best option. The chain only sits on the tire tread and is fastened to one of the lug nuts on your wheel with an easy-to-use fixing key. There are no attachments behind the wheel like typical tire chains, which ensures that there is no interference with any suspension or braking components on the inside of the wheel well. You won't have to stop and readjust these chains either - they self-tension, self-center, and conform to the tire perfectly as you drive, providing a precise fit even on worn tires. These chains are ideal for use in light snow and ice.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you wont be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Because these chains are customizable, the first fitting could take a little time but after that, it's simple. The included instructions will let you know if you need to adjust the chains based on your tire size.

Remove lug cover if present

1. To begin installation, you'll need access to your wheel's lug nuts. If you have a plate covering your lug nuts, pop it off using either the included Allen key or a flathead screwdriver.

Determine size of lug nuts

2. Determine which lug nut adapter you'll need to fit over the nut on your wheel. Attach that adapter to the included fixing key. The most commonly used adapters are included.

Lay chains over tire thread

3. Fit the chain over your wheel, getting it as far onto the tire as possible.

Tighten lug nut adapter

4. Using the fixing key, thread the included bolt into the adapter. The other end of the fixing key will attach to the K-Summit base, which includes the ratcheting mechanism that tensions the chains as you drive.

The adapter secures over your lug nut to hold the K-Summit base in place on your wheel. You might need to use the included spacer to get the chains to sit properly.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains Review

Adam: Hi everyone. Adam with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Konig K Summit XXL premium self-tensioning snow tire chains. So at first glance you guys are probably thinking this isn't your basic tire chain. It really isn't it's actually interesting how it works. Basically it's going to be easier than most to put on.

Once you find the proper tool that comes with our kit to fit around your lug nut you basically put half of it on, tighten that down, it's just a ratcheting strap here, and then roll over it and it actually just does it by itself. It just goes around and then you come out and check it and tie it down some more.We are going to have a D link shapes for our tire chains and it's going to make a diamond pattern here. It also has some steel plates that it's going to be great for icebreakers basically just going in and breaking up all that ice so you're not just sitting there and sliding. And these plates right here are going to be made of plastic but they have I would call them studs or rivets and basically that's going to grip that ice or snow a little bit better than this plastic and it's going to help keep this plastic going for a decently long time. Between the shape of the links and the pattern of which they go around your tire I think they're going to definitely get you to and from your destination pretty safely, good starts, good stops, good turns.

And these are going to be able to fit on your rear wheel drive and of course your front wheel drive and obviously all four of them as well for your four wheel drive or all wheel drive applications. So between it being pretty easy to install compared to some of the other ladder pattern style chains you're also going to be staying on the outside of your wheel and you're not going to be having to actually lay down on the snow to get behind your tire and link all of those links behind your tire in your wheel well. In my opinion that is probably one of the most ideal things for me if I was buying tire chains just because if I'm installing tire chains there's probably going to be snow on the ground and I don't want to be laying in that to get everything hooked up and then go back in my car and get everything all gross. This way you just put it on there, you're staying outside. You don't have to worry about any of those sensors or wires in the back of your wheel well. And it's actually even easier to get them off. It's just a normal ratchet strap and go like that.

You're going to see it loosen up a little bit and once you get that somewhat loose you can go in there and actually loosen and take off this bolt. And once you get that done you'll have less tension and you can go ahead and work these off. Once you get most of them off we are going to have to roll over them a little bit obviously to get the bottom chains off of our tire. But all you got to do is just get in your car and just roll over it and you'll come back out and both of them they'll be out. But I do suggest undoing all of them on all the tires you install these on just so you only have to go in your car once, roll over them and take them off.So once you just roll off of them a little bit obviously we're going to be able to grab it and put it all back together and it folds up pretty nicely actually especially compared to the ladder style chains.

Those are a pain to keep unraveled. And in my opinion this is a pretty hefty bag. It's not just cloth or canvas and it actually has hard plastic on the inside. I would definitely say this is one of the best bags that comes with any tire chains that we carry here. Just put those back in and zip it up.And it really isn't too difficult to install these even if you're doing it on four wheels on your vehicle so let's just go ahead and do it together. So, the first thing we're going to want to do is grab our bag here and grab the instructions. So we are dealing with the K67 size of these Konig chains and basically what we're going to do is we're going to see if we have to adjust the chains for them to be able to fit our tires here. So, as you can see here up top we are using the K67 XXLs and the tire size on our vehicle here is going to be a 245 65 R16 so you just locate that there. So, we are going to have to remove one of these links here. So, if you don't know your tire size off the top of your head basically it's going to be along the rim of your vehicle. It's going to be a three number, and then a two number, and then an R and then that's going to be your rim size. It may start with a P or an LT something like that but it's usually always going to be around the rim. So these green/yellow neon indicators here these are going to be the ones that we're going to be removing if we are told to do so after looking up our tire size in the instructions. So the tools are included with the kit. We're going to get one to go over our nylon lock nut on this side and an Allen key to go on this side. It doesn't matter which one you do it just needs to have this neon indicator in the middle here and it's pretty self explanatory, put one in on one side and then loosen the other until it completely comes off. So once we get this nylon lock nut off you can go ahead and just remove that little link there. As you can see it just basically just spreads that out just so it can fit your tire size and it's not going to affect anything. So I do suggest that you put these back together and put it in your kit just in case you do change tire sizes down the road.So if you have a plate covering up your lug nuts we are going to be having to access those. So, just grab any sort of tool here. I'm actually just using the Allen key provided but I might have to go ahead and grab a Phillips if it doesn't come off that easily. So, now we can go ahead and pick the appropriate size for our lug nuts here and we just want them to fit on there. As you can see here this is going to be the one that's going to fit on there the best. As you can see it goes all the way up to it like that. Not with a whole lot of force, it doesn't take a whole lot but the ones that you won't be using on this just so you guys can see what it looks like basically. Obviously that's way too much play and obviously this one is just a little snug. You don't really want it to have to actually push on there and pull it off. So we're definitely going to go with this size here. This fits it real snug like. Put that on there. So now we can go ahead and actually take our chains here and fold them out like so and start fishing them around our tire here making sure that everything's not all kinked up. And we're obviously not going to be able to get all of it around our tire but we are going to get enough just to get at least 60% of that tire covered for now. So now we can go ahead and take this plastic section. It's on the little strap here. We're going to take one of our included bolts and thread it in. But as you can see now how it's going to sit it is going to be really close to our rim. So pre installed on this plastic piece here when you get it out of the box you're going to have a spacer and a bolt. So basically we want to pick the right spacer to be able to thread that in and we're going to have a decent amount of clearance here at least about an inch and I'm actually going to go ahead and go with the larger spacers that come in our little bag.And then of course we will have to grab a longer bolt that's in the bag as well. So this way when we put that on there we're going to have plenty of room in between our rim and our plastic tool here. Just thread that on and as you thread it on it's going to basically grab onto your lug nut and keep it into place. So now what we want to do is set our tensioner basically on one of our lug nuts facing towards the center hub cap of our wheel. Now once you do that you can go ahead and tighten it down and the reason for this being is as you can see this ratchet strap does pull on this strap and we want it to be pretty close to the center just to give us a lot of strength and tension without putting a lot of strain on these chains. You want to get it pretty tight, get it real nice and snug, but don't over tighten these. So once you go ahead and roll over them a couple of times you come back out and make sure that it's nice and seated into place and if everything seems to be in order then you're pretty much ready to go. And again, that's basically all you really need to know for the Konig K Summit XXL premium self-tensioning snow tire chains.

So far so good. I’m waiting for snow before I give 5 stars.
It’s recommended you fit the chains before you actually need them to get familiar with the innovative design. I had to remove all 5 yellow bolts since my wheels are larger. Keep the extra hardware but you won’t need them unless you change cars.
Once fitted you’re good to go.
Wear gloves to mount them in about 5 minutes.

Super easy to install during a test run. Haven't needed them yet, but when it comes to snow chains, better safe than sorry.

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

Stay the away from this dangerous, poorly designed, incredibly overpriced, disaster waiting to happen, product.
After following etrailers tire size calculator I ordered the K Summit chains for my Mercedes AMGGLC 43. I live full-time in a Mountain Community at 6000 feet and I’ve had many vehicles and experiences with tire chains and cables. I ordered these chains because of their supposed efficacy with high-performance vehicles with low profile tires, etc. Despite adequate practice pre-storm, by myself and both my sons who are in their 20’s, these over priced dangerous pieces of garbage failed on December 20, 2020 during a blizzard in our community while trying to get my sons to the airport. The right sided chain disappeared after less than 2 miles of driving and we were left stranded in a ditch on the wrong side of the road for days before our vehicle could be towed out due to the high demand in the area. I have been driving in snow conditions since I was a teenager, I am now 65. I have driven in worse conditions with 2 Wheel vehicles with regular chains and rarely failed to get home or around when I needed to. My Mercedes AMG has traction control, all wheel drive, slippery mode, and can be raised to avoid obstacles. Nonetheless, in this unusual freak blizzard, when I needed a chain product the most, these failed me and my family miserably. Their customer support consisted of a never ending chain of transfers from one person or department to another, and to this day I’ve never received a refund or gotten satisfaction. If I could’ve burned the remaining K summit chain I would’ve, but I had to settle for the pleasure of throwing the remaining one away in the expensive case it came in. Do yourself and anyone else you know who is shopping for chains a favor and warm them away from this failure prone overpriced piece of junk. RRT.

Comments
I have reached out to the manufacturer and determined that these chains would be a fit for the tire size. When installing the chains you will want to make sure that you are attaching the lug nut adapter that matches the wheel bot size. etrailer.coms custom fitguide will indicate whether your vehicle requires an adapter that is sold separately. And that you are using the cage, spacer and adapter correctly.

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

Purchased these awesome chains because my 2019 traverse has custom wheels (wider) so traditional chains/cables that wrap around the wheels would cause damage to my brake components. The instructions in the manual can be a little confusing but read and watch the tutorial video and you'll be good to go. I had to remove the exact amount of bolts from the chains it recommended in the manual for my wheels, 5 if I remember correctly. After a couple dry runs installing/removing at home I was ready for big bear. The family and I spent Thanksgiving up on big bear and yes, it snowed A LOT!! The chains worked great and along with a lot of looks from other drivers, I even got compliments from the locals there that obviously are used to driving with chains. When it came time to take them off halfway down the mountain, it was super fast and easy I was done in no time. NOTE: the bolt that goes over the lug nut leaves an indentation on your lug nuts, especially if your vehicle has the chrome finished ones like mine does. Have to buy a new set of front wheel lug nuts and use the old ones for when we drive up to the snow again and use these cool chains!

I love these chains! I purchased them for a BMW X7 M50i, tire size 275/40r22 in front, 315/35r22 rear. The close fit of the chains fits my snow tires without causing damage to the vehicle or tires. It took a bit to figure out installation - the included directions remind me of IKEA instructions (few words, over simplified pictures). The online videos were the most helpful helpful for set-up/fit adjustment and installation. Also, be sure to get the ratchet assembly as close to flush with the wheel as possible. The chains won’t tighten properly if you fail this step. It took a few attempts to get them on the first time because of the learning curve. And still, it was maybe an hour from start to finish, including the removal of screws and changing the lug nut spacer to customize the fit. Once I had that done, actual installation was maybe 5 minutes. I had to drive further than 5 feet to achieve self-tightening (the videos don’t show this), and definitely check that they are secure before driving at speed. Overall, I am confident I can install these alone in adverse weather conditions, should the need arise. I plan to purchase more for other vehicles.

Very unique design. Do set them up and put them on before you really need them. The screws that adjust the size do take some time to remove. Unlike others, I had few to no issues getting them off. They fit snuggly on my tires. They were a little hard to get off after releasing the tension, but I guess that is good too. I will have to wait until I need them to put them to the ultimate test.

The Konig self-tensioning snow chains I purchased were easy to install and worked great. However, I only used them once as a test to check them out. It had snowed just before I received them so the timing was great. I live in an area (East Tennessee) that has steep grades so I tested the chains on the grades-forward and backward while moving, stopped on the steepest grade and able to drive away without slipping, and effective when stopping. The chains were also easy to remove. I've done a lot of driving in the snow all over the US and also in Canada using a variety of chains including ice chains with v bars. The Konig chains were by far the easiest chains I've ever had to install. Incidentally, I have a Trail Rated 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited vehicle which I believe worked nicely to enhance the capabilities of both the Jeep and the chains.

Comments
Hi Patrick, Maybe its global warming but I havent had any snow required for my Konig chains. However, after my previous excellent experience that I wrote about, Im pretty sure they will work fine if needed. Many thanks for keeping in touch. Best wishes, Gary

Fits tight as a drum! The K44 is nice and snug on my 19’s. Kinda nervous about the stress on the tensioning strap and lug nut clinchers, but these things will be sweet if the Engineers did their job right! Only plan to use these for a few miles at a time, so if all goes well they’ll last me a good long while

Easy ordering process chains arrived in Seattle 2 days later with free shipping. Chains were for 275/50 20 tires for a MB GLE 450 Instructions called for (4) pins to be removed. Took 10 mins to put chains on. Instructions were good. I would recommend this product and trailer and etrailer

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

I'm giving these four stars as I haven't tried them in snow. I bought them in Spring to save a few $$.

The instructions are a little weird as the English translation isn't great and the pics are unclear in a few places. The instruction videos on etrailer are very helpful.

You MUST set these up before you need to use them as they have to be sized to your specific tire dimensions and lug nut.

The tightening wrench has a torque setting. When you fit the lug nut connection you tighten until you hear a click. It ends up really tight and took a little work to remove.

After the lug connection is on, you tighten a ratchet before rolling the vehicle to complete installation. I didn't notice at first you only tighten until you see a line of red stitching. Because of that the chain didn't go on property. I reset and tried again and all was fine.

These go on very tight. At least if you follow instructions to the letter.

Hope they do what I need them to do in winter.

This isnt directed towards etrailer, they have been nothing but amazing. overall these chains are really expensive for snow chains that will only be used a couple of times a year. The instruction manual is horrible, directions are very broad and not specific at all which was beyond frustrating. Thankfully I fitted and tested the chains at home before I went up to the snow, one chain fell off during the first test but then I put it back on and it stayed on. I haven't been to the snow with them yet, so wish me luck!

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

Had these K-Summit "chains" for a Toyota Corolla for 5+ years, and they worked so well that I immediately bought a new pair to fit my 2013 Honda Accord (different tire size), and they also work great. Used them the other day in 6" of unplowed snow, on the hill I live on. As long as you go slow (I usually drive < 25 MPH) they just keep moving you forward. Two quick notes: 1) I noticed going uphill that my wheels started skidding, then stopping, and repeated that annoying cycle, which made it harder than usual to continue moving forward. I quickly figured out that this was the way the anti-spin system worked on the car (which doesn't want you to spin your wheels). I disabled that and that odd behavior stopped. 2) The fitting guide, which tells you how many "links" or "regulation elements" (as the instructions calls them) to remove to fit the chain to the tire, is assuming you're placing them on all-season tires. When you use snow tires, as I do, you have to remove more links to get the chain to fit correctly. This is not a problem, but it's useful to know. The representative from Thule, the company from whom I bought my original set, admitted that they should mention this in the instruction guide.

Comments
Still great! Didn’t need them that often last season, but always nice to know they’re in the trunk if I do. Never been unable to complete trip with these “chains” attached.

Great product and fast shipping from etrailer. I purchased the Konig K-Summit chains for my 2011 BMW 535i. They are easy to install and take off. Make sure you install the chains at home before you need them. The lug nut attachments that came in the box would not fit the lug nuts on my cars wheel, so I had to obtain an attachment that did fit. Do not exceed 30MPH when the chains are installed. The chains will come apart and damage your car if you exceed the speed restriction. Unfortunately, this happened to me when using my first pair of Thule K-Summit chains - new tire and body damage $2,000. But if you stay below 30MPH , the chains are great.

  • Safest Snow Chain Recommendation for 2016 Chevy Spark
For your 2016 Chevy Spark the safest tire chain options we have are the Konig K-Summit chains as they mount very securely to the wheel and do not drape over the inside of the tire at all so you don't have to worry about inner tire clearance issues. If you have the tire size of 185/55-15 or 195/55-15 you'd want the part # TH02230K11 and you'd be set. I also attached a review video for these chains for you to check that show how easily they install and how well they work.
