Form meets function in Konig's K-Summit tire chains. Unlike typical snow chains, the K-Summit chains require no attachments behind the wheel. Simply place two of the traction plates on top of the tire and fasten the K-Summit to the wheel's lug nut or bolt with the easy-to-use fixing key. Activate the chain's ratcheting mechanism and you'll be ready to roll. As you drive away, the traction plates clamp onto the tire surface, and the chain adjusts to conform to the tire perfectly, providing a precise fit even on worn tires. After use, fold up the tire chains and store them in the compact, reusable carrying case.

The K-Summit delivers an extremely user-friendly design. Each chain sits on top of your tire's treads instead of wrapping around the entire wheel. This design not only eliminates the threat of scratches to your wheels, but it also ensures that there is no interference with any suspension or braking components on the inside of the wheel well.

Konig snow chains are handmade in Italy of hardened manganese-nickel alloy steel for durability. The reduced-clearance, D-shape links provide superior traction for excellent grip on snow and ice. The durable plastic traction plates have metal studs to give you superior grip while also providing a high level of driving comfort.

K-Summit Installation

How to Install the K-Summit Snow Chain:

  1. Lay 2 of the chains traction plates on top of the tire.
  2. Attach chain to 1 wheel nut.
  3. Activate the ratchet, which tightens as you drive away.

K-Summit Lug Nut Adapter

Lug Nut Adapter

Attach the lug nut adapter that matches your wheel bolt size to the fixing key. The most commonly used adapters are included with your K-Summit snow chains. (etrailer.com's custom fitguide will indicate whether your vehicle requires an adapter that is sold separately.) The fixing key then mounts to the wheel bolt on the end where the adapter has been affixed. The other end attaches to the K-Summit base, which includes the ratcheting mechanism that tensions the chains as you drive.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates the width
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel expressed in inches

Video Transcript for Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains Installation - 2018 Ford Mustang

Today on our 2018 Ford Mustang, we're gonna take a look at and show you how to install these Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains. This is a great product for your vehicle to help you get through any type of light snow and ice. What makes these great is that you're not gonna have to get behind your tire at all, you're don't have to lay on the ground and reach behind, make a connection point, and then come up top and reach behind your tire to connect it back there. You're gonna be able to do everything from the front. It sits just in the center tread of your tire all the way around and no further back, which works out great for Mustang owners because, let's be honest, you know the investment you made in it, you wanna make sure that you have the least chance possible of damaging your tire or your vehicle. It uses an assembly to latch onto the lug nut. It basically just clamps down on top of it and then holds itself in place. From there, you just tighten it down with this ratchet strap and then it sucks itself onto the tire. These chains are great for any vehicle, like our Mustang, that has low wheel well clearance.

It's gonna be a lot easier to install. The D links from the chain are gonna dig into that snow and ice and give you the traction you need for starts, stops, and turns. The chain's low profile are also gonna make sure that they don't interfere with any ABS or traction control systems. There is reinforced ice breakers built in around the chain. That's gonna help break through any of the thick stuff to make sure you get the traction you need. The chains come in quantity of two with this nice carrying bag that's gonna make for easy storage.

It's also gonna come with all of the hardware and tools that you need to make it fit your tire. Now that we've gone over some of those features, let's show you how easy they are to get installed. Now, there's a couple things you have to take care of with your chains before you install them on your Mustang. You always want to make sure you practice a couple of times putting them on your tire in your garage or anywhere else where there's not a lot of snow so that when the time comes when you're out in those emergency situations, you're gonna know what you're doing and be confident.Once you've completed all of the pre-assembly steps, the directions do a great job of telling you what to do. Just follow those to a T. We'll go ahead and just check them over for any type of damage that might have occurred if you've already used them. If not, we'll go ahead and get them in place on our tire. We're just gonna fold it out and begin to put it overtop like so.

You don't want to put it too far it. It's just gonna be just like that. There we go. Just get the bottom as far under as you can. Once you drive forward a bit with the chains completely installed, they'll suck themselves under the tire and then sink down and make it snug. Now, from here, we're gonna take a hold of our lug nut piece, and we're gonna put that on, and we're gonna make sure that this arrow is facing the center of the wheel, so right there.

And then we're just gonna hand tighten this bolt real quick. Once we have it hand tight, we'll go ahead and grab our included tool, which is just a wrench. You could probably find the same size on your tool bench if you have one. Now we'll tighten it down the rest of the way. It doesn't have to be too tight. Just make it a little bit snug. Be sure not to over tighten. Seems to be good. From here, we're just gonna take our ratchet right here and we're gonna tighten it down. Let it as far as you can. At this point, you're already done, and then you just gotta drive forward a bit, and then it's a good idea to stop and get out and make sure that your chains did in fact get under the tire and then tighten down. Now, we've gone ahead and backed up and then drove forward a couple different times, and with a little bit of help you might have to get out and just kind of nudge them onto your tire. They're gonna tighten down like this. You're gonna see they're very secure. From there, you're ready to hit the road and get through whatever weather you need to get through. That'll do it for our look at the Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains on our 2018 Ford Mustang.

I only used it one time during the year, but it sure came in handy. It is particularly useful for me because of the very limited space in the wheel well of the Genesis coup. Fitting to the lug bolt was a little tricky but did work. I try to travel into the Rockies at least once a winter so that’s why I bought the chains 590778

2011 BMW 5 Series

Great product and fast shipping from etrailer. I purchased the Konig K-Summit chains for my 2011 BMW 535i. They are easy to install and take off. Make sure you install the chains at home before you need them. The lug nut attachments that came in the box would not fit the lug nuts on my cars wheel, so I had to obtain an attachment that did fit. Do not exceed 30MPH when the chains are installed. The chains will come apart and damage your car if you exceed the speed restriction. Unfortunately, this happened to me when using my first pair of Thule K-Summit chains - new tire and body damage $2,000. But if you stay below 30MPH , the chains are great. 348371

After having a hard time figuring out how to assembly it due to lack of written instructions along with the illustration, I was able to mount them with technical help from the manufacurer engineering dept. I am very unsure if I made a good choice in purchasing this product. I was led by the marketing of easiness of installation. Now I realize that if one link on the chain breaks, the whole chain safety is compromise whereas in a standard cheaper model (+- $40) you can just remove one link across the tire and replace it easily. According to Tech. dept. from Thule if on single linkin this chain breaks you can use an emmergency link tighted with plier, but the chain needs to be mailed back to Thurle for repair or replacement. This is a hassle for such a high priced, premium, "ahead of time design". Sure the idea is good, but needs improvement. The same design that makes it easy of use, renders it useless in case of a broken link. I have not driven with them on snow, but I already see its flaw and I am unsure if I made a wise investment. It came with one year warranty, but you get the hassle of having to return them for replacement while you go to Pep Boys and buy a cheaper reliable cable chain while the white elephant is in the shop. What if it breaks after the one year warranty? Waht happened to your U$ 405 plus shipping investment that should bring you peace of mind? These are a few thought I want to share with you. Have a great day. 8216

Fits tight as a drum! The K44 is nice and snug on my 19’s. Kinda nervous about the stress on the tensioning strap and lug nut clinchers, but these things will be sweet if the Engineers did their job right! Only plan to use these for a few miles at a time, so if all goes well they’ll last me a good long while 454929

Excellent product. After few seasons in the snow where I had to struggle to put on the conventional chains while on the side of the road, I appreciate the ease with which Konig chains can be installed and un-installed. 602581

Review from a similar Konig K-Summit in Tire Chains

I have a 2019 Subaru Forester. I purchased these based on the recommendations and information provided by this site. The Call Center rep was extremely helpful in finalizing more order by making sure it should be compatible with my vehicle and discussing shipping options. As for the tire chains, they fit well once I figured out how to install them. They are very easy to install once you get them adjusted for your tire and find the right fit combination between the lug nut size and the spacers. The only main issue I have is with the tire size and the recommended sizing of the tires. The instruction manual recommended removing one of the pins to allow for more chain radius. However, I had to remove six to get the chains on properly. However, once that was complete, the chains are incredibly easy to put on. The winch works well pulling the chains snug to the tires and is easy to adjust. Releasing is a little harder, but still easy. 609457

I did need to adjust the "chains" for my tire size. It was easy to do with the supplied tools. They are indeed easy to put on and take off. The tension mechanism works great for keeping them on. The first time you put them on, you might wonder if you've done it correctly? Of course, you should practice once before you leave home. They are not "chains"; they don't rattle! 460101

The Konig self-tensioning snow chains I purchased were easy to install and worked great. However, I only used them once as a test to check them out. It had snowed just before I received them so the timing was great. I live in an area (East Tennessee) that has steep grades so I tested the chains on the grades-forward and backward while moving, stopped on the steepest grade and able to drive away without slipping, and effective when stopping. The chains were also easy to remove. I've done a lot of driving in the snow all over the US and also in Canada using a variety of chains including ice chains with v bars. The Konig chains were by far the easiest chains I've ever had to install. Incidentally, I have a Trail Rated 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited vehicle which I believe worked nicely to enhance the capabilities of both the Jeep and the chains. 597360

I appreciate the follow up to ask about my experience and to be honest I'm a little disappointed. I only needed the chains for a short drive (about 2 miles at most) last year and they worked as advertised. That's great. However- this year I needed them for a similarly short period - only a few miles - and one fell off whilst I was on the highway. I didn't notice at first but a passing motorist flagged me down. I had to walk over a mile on a dangerous stretch of highway, in the snow and ice to retrieve it. I had read reviews of others who had lost their chains whilst driving, chalking it up to user error, but now I know different!! 351678

Etrailer.com did an excellent job in shipping the two sets of chains that I ordered. Super detailed tracking information was awesome. It always makes me nervous when buying over the internet that a retailer may ship the wrong item especially considering how many different sizes these chains are available. I will point out that the chains were advertised as Thule. However, I received one set of Thule and the other set was Konig who bought out this chain line from Thule in 12/2015. In comparing the two brands side-by-side, the components and build are absolutely indistinguishable from each other with the exception of the brand stickers. I have no reason to believe one brand to be superior to the other. The K56's fit my Honda Accord 225/65/17 tires like a glove. They are a combination of simplicity and sophistication, if that's possible. I can't wait to try them out on the ice and snow. Thank you etrailer.com and I would definitely order from you again. 275371

Review from a similar Konig K-Summit in Tire Chains

We have a BMW X3 in the foothills of the Sierras and need to have chains on hand. Normal chains are not an option for the BMW X3. On the surface theses seem like a very slick product. In reality maybe for some. There are limited Choices for the X3, The K-Summit Size: K45 seem OK but I have issues and concerns. Once received you have to fit the chains to your tires. DO HIS IN THE GARAGE BEFORE YOU GO ANYWHERE. Doing this on the road in the snow would be a pain. If you like IKEA you’ll love the instructions. (Well maybe not that bad). Go on-line and look at some videos. I needed to remove 4 “regulation elements” on each chain to fit our tires. Tools are provided but I used a metric socket and a cordless drill to help with this and it took maybe 5 minutes. With hand tools the 8 total “elements’ would have taken 20 or more. Now basically shove the chain more or less in place with plastic “pads at 10:00, 2:00, 4:00 and 8:00 O’Clock positions on the tire. Next make sure you have the correct size lug nut adapter and the proper spacing from the rim. Supposedly just put the adaptor on a lug, with the indicating tip toward the rim center and tighten the bolt with the supplied wrench. I found issues with the 17mm lug adapter and the 17mm BMW lug. The BMW lug is not very tall and the adapter never felt very securely seated to me. (Yes I made sure the adapter is seated correctly in the “cup”; instructions mention this). This may be better on other vehicles. Lastly, pull the crank until you see the red line on the nylon strap. Dive forward 50 feet or so so the chains will move onto the tire. We got out of the car to check and it still required a couple of short toe kicks to fully get them securely on. In summary they seem to “work OK”. I didn’t find any better options available for the X3. Once set up they are fairly easy to install with the exception of the lug nut connection which I found insecure and fussy on the X3. The plastic components give me concern for durability. Will they become brittle and break in cold temperatures or over extended use? Time will tell. Very costly if there is a failure on the road warrantee not withstanding. 610832

Review from a similar Konig K-Summit in Tire Chains

These are adapters to allow the associated chain set fit some uncommon tire lugs. The adapters work flawlessly. Ordered them for the chain set as the rims on my vehicle require them. Fit perfectly as did the chains after adjustment. However, I don't know how well they actually work on snow and ice. Based on experience with a number of other chain sets I see no reason to doubt their reliability and efficiency. Backstory: Ordered a set for a trip to Colorado over Christmas & New Year's as we were expecting snow and ice as we were planning to travel to Estes Park, Denver, Colorado Springs, Salida, Buena Vista, Leadville, etc. Received our order quickly and correctly. Tried chains on tires and made fitting adjustments per instructions for exact tire size. Played with the chains a few times to make sure I knew how to get them deployed quickly. They are extremely easy to put on once they are adjusted. Watch the video - it really is that easy. Fast forward a few weeks, we went on our trip. Got not much more than a dusting the whole trip and never had to put the chains on. Meanwhile, back home, there were something like 129,000 poor bxxxxxxs waiting for the roads to be cleared and power to be restored from the huge ice and snow storms. At the end of our trip we drove home over clear roads surrounded by big piles of plowed snow. Arrived home to find our neighbors huge tree uprooted and blown over. We didn't receive any damage. Next day got the hound out of doggie jail pretty much as if nothing had happened. I like these chains! 326170

Bought chains for a 2015 3 Series BMW with M Sport Package. You just can't buy chains for these at your local auto parts store. Got exactly what I want, the Thule chains that have nothing on the back side of the tire, the Thule K-Summit series and the price was substantially less than buying directly from Thule. Service was quick, got updated status from eTrailer periodically, and overall an excellent experience. Having a video from eTrailer showing how to install was a great idea. 223741

Review from a similar Konig K-Summit in Tire Chains

Had these K-Summit "chains" for a Toyota Corolla for 5+ years, and they worked so well that I immediately bought a new pair to fit my 2013 Honda Accord (different tire size), and they also work great. Used them the other day in 6" of unplowed snow, on the hill I live on. As long as you go slow (I usually drive < 25 MPH) they just keep moving you forward. Two quick notes: 1) I noticed going uphill that my wheels started skidding, then stopping, and repeated that annoying cycle, which made it harder than usual to continue moving forward. I quickly figured out that this was the way the anti-spin system worked on the car (which doesn't want you to spin your wheels). I disabled that and that odd behavior stopped. 2) The fitting guide, which tells you how many "links" or "regulation elements" (as the instructions calls them) to remove to fit the chain to the tire, is assuming you're placing them on all-season tires. When you use snow tires, as I do, you have to remove more links to get the chain to fit correctly. This is not a problem, but it's useful to know. The representative from Thule, the company from whom I bought my original set, admitted that they should mention this in the instruction guide. 585054

I found the preinstallation check list and install procedure easy to use. These are the easiest chains I have ever installed or removed. I can install both chains in 5 minutes and you don't get wet or dirty doing it. They worked great on my Volvo AWD. Making those areas I had problems with before a piece of cake. One note of caution, make sure you tightened the attachment to the lug nut secure. If you don't the chains could come off while driving. And you might not know it! My Volvo lugs have very shallow nut to attach to, I think I'll look into lugs with more depth. All in all very satisfied with my purchase . 333803

Tested it out on a new vehicle at home and it was a pretty straight forward fit. Just make sure you have the right lug nut attachment and spacers set up and the rest is easy. More importantly, Adam at eTrailer was awesome. Helped me make sure what I needed (very last minute) for our vehicle and tires and was super friendly doing so. Would definitely buy from Adam again! 453758

Review from a similar Konig K-Summit in Tire Chains

This is an update to the review for the 2017 MINI Cooper with 205/45-17 tires. By taking off both spacers (red and silver), I was able to get the chains to center on the tire - I might even be able to put one of the chain tightening screws back on, maybe more as the tread wears down. So I think they're going to work well this winter. I'll bump the review up to five stars when I can figure out how to get them to easily fit into the carrying case. 409107

These worked great. The first time I used them, I didnt tighten the screw enough and one of the chains came off while driving. But after learning to tighten them enough, I had no problems. It was a mild winter, but at least I know that driving 20 miles in 5 of unplowed snow up the mountain highway isnt a problem. And I finally figured out how to get them back into the case.

Review from a similar Konig K-Summit in Tire Chains

Bought the chains for a stay in Truckee. We never got hit with snow that required chains but I put them on as a test before the trip and they went on easily. Don't know how they work over an extended period but they seem good and etrailer.com was great in helping me get the chains adjusted properly as the directions could use a few more words to go with the pictures. 337457

So far so good. I’m waiting for snow before I give 5 stars. It’s recommended you fit the chains before you actually need them to get familiar with the innovative design. I had to remove all 5 yellow bolts since my wheels are larger. Keep the extra hardware but you won’t need them unless you change cars. Once fitted you’re good to go. Wear gloves to mount them in about 5 minutes. I 724776

Review from a similar Konig K-Summit in Tire Chains

Hands down best chains on the market. No better feeling than pulling up next to people doing the chain shuffle and being done by time your hands even get cold! These chains payed for themselves the day they showed up. K-summit chains allowed me to plow through 16 inches of snow in my VW passat to get my child to the hospital in an emergency situation. Only issue I've had is I drive crazy in the snow and threw off my chains twice. Easy on and easy off. Perfect for people that live in the mountains. I put on and take off 3-6 times per day with no issues. Absolutely love them. 6 out of 5 stars! 608029

Just put the chains on for a practice round. Very straightforward, and I think it will be routine even in difficult conditions. I have large tires, and this was the only product which fit. These are heavy duty chains, and I am very satisfied. etrailer has a user friendly website, and when it looked like the chains wouldn't reach me in time for my next trip, etrailer pulled out all the stops to get them to me before I departed. I will be visiting the website for more products shortly. 455781

The instructions for chain fittings and installation were detailed and understandable. The only problem was removing regulation elements for adjusting chain dimension. The nut with "lock tight" required a vise grip because the hex tool would strip the element. The chains are ready for snow and ice to come. 454801

  • Recommended Snow Chains for 2017 VW Golf Alltrack with 225/55-17 Tires
  • The 225/55-17 tires are bigger than the manufacturer normally puts on the vehicle. If you have these tires, you will have even more limited clearances so I recommend only using the Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern - D Link - K-Summit - Size K44 # TH02230K44. These chains require no inner clearance as they only ride on tread portion of the tire. I've linked a video of this to assist. The chains should be installed on the front tires of your 4Motion system....

Basically you will need Class S compatible chains or cables because there is limited clearance between the tires and vehicle components. Also, on your vehicle the chains should only be used on the front wheels. If you are able to turn off any type...

Unlike most chains these require zero inner tire clearance since they do not drape over the inner sidewall of the tire at all so they are great for vehicles that do not have much clearance. These also do not touch the rims like other chains do. While we can't recommend you use chains on a vehicle that the manufacturer states they can't...

These chains are great because they don't drape over the inside corner of the tire so they do not require any amount of inner tire clearance and they don't touch the rim so you don't have to worry about them damaging the nice finish of your wheels.
