Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Trailer Tire and Wheel for Tire Size 20.5 x 8.0 -10 For Use as Spare on Boat Trailer
For your tire size of 20.5 x 8.0 -10 we have the part # AM3H400 which is mounted on a 5 lug wheel and is galvanized. This would work great on your boat trailer as a spare setup.

  • Spare Tire Recommendation for a Dual Jet Ski Trailer with 205 x 65 x 10 Load Range E Tires
My recommendation is to stay with the load range that your trailers axle is rated for and that matches the tires on your trailer. In this case a load range E trailer tire, like item # AM3H490, is rated for 1,650 lbs, which would be good for a single axle trailer with a 3,000 to 3,300 lb axle. If the Axle on your trailer is rated lower, 2,200 pounds or less then going with a load range C tire for a spare would be just fine, but having a load range E tire on the opposite side could cause...

The tires in your size that we offer have varying pressure ratings depending on their load capacity. For example, if you look at the tires in your size shown on the link I have included you will see that those rated for Load range E, such as # AM3H490, have a specified pressure of 90-psi; those rated as Load range C, such as # AM3H400, have a pressure rating of 50-psi. Trailer tires will indicate their required inflation pressure on the sidewall of the tire. This is usually stated as a...

  • Is Powder Coated Wheel or Galvanized Wheel Better for 205/65-10 Trailer Tire
Between the white powder coated wheel on the Kenda # AM3H430 and the galvanized wheel on the Kenda # AM3H440 you are better off going with the galvanized wheel. Galvanized wheels offer the utmost in protection against rust, which is particularly important when it comes to boat trailers or any situation where the wheel is going to consistently be in contact with moisture. The process of galvanizing the wheel is going to ensure better durability over the course of time than a powder coated...

This is rated for 70 mph max due to the tires. Traveling faster is not recommended as the tires could overheat and fail but traveling at 70 mph max consistently wouldn't be an issue so it will add 15 minutes to your trip but will get you there safely. The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B # AM3H360 will give you a slightly smoother ride when empty, but I still recommend using the Load Range C option # AM3H400 because it will be a thicker sidewall on the tire. The ply rating bump from 4 ply to 6 ply is more ideal if you will be traveling on highways or rough side roads. The trailer suspension should take the brunt of the shock whether loaded or unloaded. • Replacement for 20.5 x 8-10 Tire and 5-Lug Wheel
So you mentioned wheel, though the 20.5 x 8-10 size you mentioned is actually a tire size, which leads me to think you are looking for a replacement wheel and tire of that size. Since that's an older tire size, what you will need is the modern equivalent, a size 205/65-10 tire, along with a wheel that the tire will fit on. We have just 205/65-10 tires, or just the 5-lug 10 inch rim, or a combination of the tire and rim together if that is what you are looking for. Here are the options...

  • Can I Upgrade from a 4.80x8b Tire to a 205/65-10 Tire?
The answer to your question depends on your current lug pattern and clearance between your fenders and tires. When your trailer is loaded to it's full capacity, there should be a minimum clearance of 3 inches between the top of your tire and the underside of your fender. This will give you adequate clearance for potholes and bumps. There should also be a minimum of an inch of clearance from the side wall of the tire to the trailer frame. You will not be able to use the same wheels and the...

  • Losing Air Out of Boat Trailer Tires
I would almost be willing to bet you are losing air around the bead seats. The wheels on a boat trailer are subjected to much harsher conditions than the wheels on a standard trailer. If the wheels do not have the proper coating or are not maintained properly, they can rust/corrode around the bead where the tires seats which then causes small leaks. There could be an issue with the weight capacity of your tires in relation to the weight of the boat/trailer but this would cause blowouts,...

You can use the help article I've linked to determine what bolt pattern is right for you. Once you have the right bolt pattern, the next step will be to decide what load range you need.
