Video Transcript for Checking Out the Shackle Strap

Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at replacement shackle straps for your trailer suspension. Most times our trailers are stored outside and they're exposed to a lot of elements. So just like any metal, it can corrode over time and you can see here's our old shackle strap. It has seen better days, and sometimes your holes can actually begin to oblong over time as the suspension moves. And unfortunately, once it starts to do that, it can get worse over time. So replacing something that connects all your suspension, these are gonna be a strong point to have your lease springs go to your equalizer.

So making sure that these are actually structurally strong are gonna make sure that your suspension is gonna be working properly and safely. So these straps have a diameter hole for the bolt of nine sixteenths. And you're gonna want to look at your old shackle straps to make sure that these are a direct replacement. And you're gonna measure the length by going from the center of the hole to the center of the hole. And these ones are gonna be three and 1/8th of an inch.

These are going to be steel construction, so they're gonna be nice and sturdy. And also when replacing anything on your suspension, this is just gonna kind of give it a fresh look. You know, if you're replacing your equalizer and you have rusty shackle straps, that doesn't really aesthetically look great, so this is gonna give it a fresh look and also be structurally strong. Now these are sold individually. So if you are replacing your tandem axle equalizer, you're gonna wanna pick up four of them.

And that was a look at replacement shackle straps for your trailer suspension..

  • Limited Tire Clearance with Stock Tire Size on a 2006 Forest River Cherokee 27Q
We recommend having a minimum of 3" between the top of the tire and bottom of the fender in order to allow for proper suspension travel. However, based on the photo you sent I believe you need new leaf springs as the ones you have appear to be almost completely flat. This has then compromised your tire clearance. The flattened leaf springs could either be a result of overloading the trailer or just general wear. In order to replace them you would need to know your axle capacity and the...

  • Troubleshooting Equalizer and Shackle Not Making W Shape After Leveling Trailer
Is this with it still leveled? Have you tried sitting it down completely on the axles again? That will likely get everything back into place. It doesn't look like anything is specifically broken/damaged from what I can see unless your leaf spring suffered damage but that isn't in the picture. The equalizers shifting like this can happen when leveling or lifting the trailer. Sometimes mine get this way and if nothing else driving gets it to shift back.

  • Replacement Suspension Components For A Four Winns Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
Hey Paul, When measuring shackle straps you'll want to measure from center to center of the bolt holes. The process for double-eye leaf springs is the same but you'll want to do it when the trailer is lifted up by the frame to take the weight off of them. Based on the length of your shackle straps you likely need a 3-1/8" Long shackle strap # TRSL313. You can measure to confirm. For the leaf springs we'll need to know the eye-to-eye length and axle capacity to determine the correct replacements....

  • Parts Needed for Adding Electric Brakes to Trailer with Bearings LM67048 25580
For a new hub/drum that will work great with your current axles you'd want the part # 8-201-5UC3-EZ and then for brake assemblies you'd want the # AKEBRK-7-SA which are self-adjusting. To wire up the brakes you'd need 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 which we sell by the foot. Then leaf springs the part # e34SR would work really well too. Then for a U-bolt kit you'd want the part # APUBR-8. For new shackles I'd need you to get me the length of the ones you have now though. Measured from...

  • Replacing Shackle Straps After Switching To A Taller Equalizer
Hi Mike, With the height of your equalizer increasing an inch you might need to switch to 3-1/8" shackle straps # TRSL313 to keep the leaf spring stack level but this isn't an exact science so your leaf springs could end up sitting too close to the equalizer and will bind up. Your suspension should form a 'W' shape with the equalizer and shackle straps for proper suspension travel. Too far in or out with your shackles will cause binding or will flip the axles down on the equalizer. Because...

  • Shackle Strap Size Needed For A 2021 Coachmen Catalina Trail Blazer 28THS With Lippert Equalizers
Hey David, The Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit # LC696740 has a 6" spacing so you'd only be taking on a 1/4" difference horizontally for both sides, which should be within tolerance for the shackle straps. Switching to a longer shackle strap like 3-1/8" # TRSL313 could help maintain your current height, but you'll run the risk of the straps sitting out of tolerance compared to the equalizer. The suspension has to be able to travel otherwise it will bind and start wearing out components...

  • How to Find Replacement Leaf Springs and Shackles for 1967 Aristocrat Camper
Finding replacement leaf springs for your 1967 Aristocrat camper will require some more information. You will need your axle capacity, current leaf spring length, and the shackle length. If you don't know your axle capacity, try checking the axle tag to see if it is listed. For your leaf spring measurement, we are measuring from spring eye to spring eye. For the shackles measure center hole to center hole. For example, if you have a 3,500 lb axle with a 27" leaf spring measurement you...

Although we do have 1/2" replacement bolts, there are no kits that include them. However, we can piece everything together. For a 1/2" bolt we have the # ABS74FR and for a 9/16" the # 9163B. Assuming an 11/16" outer diameter you can use the # TRBU11506 for a nylon bushing with a 1/2" inner diameter and # 721590 for 9/16" ID. • Leaf Spring Options About 25 Inches in Length For 6,000 lb Axle
You said "about" 25 inches in length so I'll give you a couple options for what might work depending on the exact length you have, and if you want to go to a higher-rated, 7k leaf spring. Also, you'll want your replacement springs to be a bit shorter because leaf springs stretch over time. If you happen to have leaf springs a bit longer than 25 inches (say 25-1/2 inches) you can use the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e78SR. For wet bolts you'd want the part # 126B2 and then for cushioned equalizers you could use the part # LC279687.

  • How to Find Correct Replacement Shackle Straps for Trailer
In regards to measuring shackle straps, you don't need to remove them to measure accurately. If they are still installed on the trailer simply measure from the center of each bolt head, the two most common are 2-1/4" part # TRSL225 and 3-1/8" part # TRSL313. It looks like you have the smaller 2-1/4" but you really ought to just measure yourself first.

  • What to do if Trailer Shackles are Flipping
Generally the issue when shackles flip when hauling empty is that they are too short. So I recommend measuring them from center hole to center hole and assuming they are less than 3 inches, replacing them with longer ones, the 3-1/8" Shackle Strap # TRSL313 or 3-1/2" Shackle Strap # TRSL350.

It appears you may have installed shackle straps which are longer than what you may have had. It appears your straps are either 3-1/8" # TRSL313 or 3-1/2" # TRSL350 and you likely only need a 2-1/4" # TRSL225. This would move the mounting point closer to the axle and raise the trailer approximately 1/2". To get enough height to clear your crossmember you will likely need the Lift Kit # RR23QX. This will allow you to raise the suspension either 1-1/4" or 2-1/4" to clear your rear crossmember. On...

Just make sure that all of your shackle straps match though. If you are using the longer straps only for a section of your suspension setup then that will cause issues for your trailer.

  • Replacement 3,500 lb Leaf Springs & 7-3/4 Inch Wide Equalizer
Thanks for all that info and we can get you exactly what you are needing. Since you have a 2-3/8" axle that would be a 3,500 lb axle, so you want leaf springs rated for that weight. The concern with springs that exceed the rating of your axle is that they will give you a very stiff, rigid ride, so you want to stay with the correctly rated springs. I'll go ahead and list out the parts you need, with a couple notes. First is that leaf springs elongate slightly over time, which is why the...

  • Determining Correct Replacement Leaf Spring For Trailer W/ 3000lb Axles and 27" Long Springs
The # SP-210275 you were looking at is for a 3500lb axle and is 27" long measured from center of spring eye to center of spring eye. This is the correct spring for your trailer based on the measurements you provided. The next shortest spring would be 2" shorter which would be much too short. • 2-1/2 Inch Shackle Straps Are Flipping After Replacing Leaf Springs
Shackle straps can actually flip if they're too short as opposed to being too long, so it makes sense because you mentioned you put on shorter, 2-1/2" shackle straps. Also, if the leaf springs you replaced are shorter than what you had ( leaf springs elongate over time so you likely got ones shorter than what you replaced, as is common), straps can also flip. I recommend going with longer shackle straps, either the Shackle Strap - 2-3/4" Long # TRSL275 or Shackle Strap - 3-1/8" Long # TRSL313.

In order for your trailer suspension to function properly you will want the angle of the shackle strap to be towards the axle so that as the leaf spring compresses and expands it will have somewhere it can go. Otherwise, you will not get the optimum performance from your trailer suspension. It may not be super dangerous, but if the suspension is not operating properly you could cause premature failure which might endanger yourself and other motorists.
