How to Pick Out Correct Shackle Length for Trailer Suspension
Updated 03/28/2017 | Published 03/27/2017 >
Question:
I have a pop up camper that I want to convert from a slipper spring set up to a doubly-eye set up. Id like to re-use the existing hangers if possible. Just grind out the cylinder that is welded in the existing rear hanger so it can accept a bolt and shackle. After measuring, I got roughly 25.5inch from hole to hole on my existing hangers, so I think the SP-212275 leafs will work. How would I go about determining what length shackle to put on there?

Well shackle length is mainly based on the height difference between the front and rear hangers. The rear hanger normally doesn't hang as low as the front so that the shackle can offset the difference and add the ability to move.
What is the height difference from the frame of the trailer to the hole on both hangers? With that we can see what would work best as a shackle. You want to go with the shackle length that allows the spring to sit as level as possible.
The most popular size is 2-1/4 inches like the part # TRSL225.
