Securing Aluminum Wheels Correctly on Camper with 1/2 Inch Lugs

Question:

I noticed my 5th wheel camper has 15 inch aluminum wheels and the holes for the lug bolts are 5/8 inch in diameter, while the lug bolts are 1/2 inch. Is this standard? The lug nuts are bulged 60 degree. Would a lug nut with a shank be better? I,ve pulled this thing across the country several times now i worry. I assume the wheels are from the factory . Thank you

For your 5th wheel camper, the wheels will have holes that will fit the 1/2 inch and leave space for easy installation. The lug nut are coned to help center the wheel on the hub so there won't be any slop or issue. Wheels like the Aluminum HWT Hi-Spec Series 03 Mod Trailer Wheel - 15" x 6" Rim - 6 on 5-1/2 # AM22646 will have steel inserts to ensure the lugs will hold tight as you travel and allow you to tighten the lugs appropriately. You don't need to have any special lug nut as the Chrome Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 1/2" (Each) # 12CLN will have the same tightening ability as the more basic # CE11051.

If you are concerned about others trying to take your wheels, you can use the Wheel Lock Set for 1/2" Wheel Bolts (2 Locks, 1 Key) # RG01-150 to deter theft.

I've attached a chart to assist with proper torque for your wheels.
