Can the CE Smith Trailer Wheel Lug Nut Be Used w/ Steel Wheels?

Updated 12/31/2025 | Published 12/01/2025

Question:

Can these be used on a travel trailer with steel wheels? Im replacing the chrome capped, long closed end style lug nuts that came from factory. Do I have to use the long closed type or can I use these open end style nuts? Thanks

Yes, they can Cat. The CE Smith Trailer Wheel Lug Nut item # CE11051 will indeed work with steel wheels. This is 60º cone style lug nut which is pretty common. It fits 1/2"-20 wheel studs.

I prefer the longer lug nuts like item # 12CLN because they completely cover the lug stud, but as far as holding your wheels on it makes no difference. The main advantage of this style is it protects your lug studs threads.

Why do you prefer the short ones like item # CE11051?

Hey Cat, how did things go with the open-end lug nuts on your travel trailer’s steel wheels? Did they give you the look and fit you were hoping for? Your update could make it easier for others choosing between the short and long styles.

@JerredH, I replaced my chrome capped long lug nuts before the outer shell detached, making them difficult to remove. I originally ordered long style replacements from a well known, name brand company but when they arrived the box stated "made in _____", so I sent them back. I chose the standard style short lug nuts because I wanted an American made product. I just popped some plastic lug nut cap covers on them to protect the stud threads. Thanks
