Determining the Bolt Pattern
The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.
To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)
On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)
Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 S Trailer Radial Trailer tire. It's in a load range E and it's mounted on this 12-inch black aluminum trailer wheel with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this tire wheel assembly is ideal for stock trailers, utility trailers, and campers. It is a black five spoke aluminum, AM01 series wheel with a machine face. It's very durable, lightweight, and rustproof.
And if you notice, there's a clear coat finish on the front and even on the back of the wheel to help protect from scuffs and scratches. Now, one of the nice features I like on this wheel is right here in the lug nut wells. They put these steel inserts in there and that's designed to help keep your wheel securely in place on your trailer hub. So basically when you put this wheel up on the hub, put the, or onto the wheel bolt, put your lug nuts on and go to torque 'em down. These inserts, these steel inserts, they prevent the holes from elongating and wearing down, so eliminates the need for constant re-tightening of your lug nuts.
Now the wheel diameter, 12-inches. The overall width on the wheel's four inches wide. Now the bolt pattern on this wheel on this wheel is a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. And if you wanna measure that on a wheel, that's a odd number of lugs, like in this case, five. What you do is just pick any hole, let's say here, and then you're gonna measure from that hole across to either one of these holes.
But when you measure it from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of whichever hole you measure to. So on this, if we measured it's 4-1/2 inches, so it's a five lug, 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. Does use a wheel lug size of 1/2 inch by 20, and the weight capacity on just the wheel is 1,520 pounds. Now if you notice, this wheel does not come with a center cap. If you do want a center cap, we do sell those separate on our website.
And you wanna make sure to get a center cap that'll fit the diameter, same diameter as this pilot hole right here, which is 3.19-inches. Now the tire is a Kenda Karrier S Trail Radial tire, uses double steel belts and full nylon ply, which combine for superior function, long life. The tread on it is a computer-generated tread design, uses premium rubber compound materials that give you superior traction and wet or dry condition. The tire is an ST, which stands for Special Trailer tire, has sturdy sidewall so they can handle heavy loads and it is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. Tire size, which would be stamped on the sidewall. ST, for Special Trailer, 145/R12. The R means it's a radial tire. Section width, 5.8-inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated, it's 21.4. And this tire is a load range E, which means it's a 10-ply rated tire. So it has a maximum load capacity of 1,520 pounds at 80 PSI. And the last thing I wanna mention is all the trailer tires now have a speed rating stamped on 'em and it's by a letter designation. And where you'll find it is right where the tire size is down by the wheel. Right after the tire size, you'll see a number for the load index and then the letter M, speed rating M will mean this has an 81 mile per hour speed rating. And this tire wheel summary does meet the Department of Transportation specifications. But that's gonna do it for a look at the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 S Trailer Radial Trailer tire in a load range E on a 12-inch black aluminum trailer wheel.
