Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This trailer hub assembly has a zinc coating that resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat or snowmobile trailer. All GAL-DEX hubs undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Replacement Hub for 1989 Ranger Trailer
Judging by your photo, your trailer would use an idler hub, not a hub drum. Assuming you have 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt circle wheels that use an # L44649 inner and outer wheel bearing, you have a few choices. Rather than the painted hub, I'd recommend going with a galvanized hub for greater corrosion resistance. Dexter hubs are manufactured in the US, which is what I'd recommend. For an 8, 10 or a 12 inch wheel, use # 8-259-50UC1 for a standard spindle or # 8-259-50UC1-EZ for the EZ Lube...

  • Depth of Hub Bore on Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-258-50UC1
Would you be able to clarify specifically what you are referencing in terms of depth from the edges of Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-258-50UC1? Do you mean the depth of the inside of the hub bore, the total length (depth of the hub bore) or a different measurement? If you can email me with a bit more specific I'd be happy to try and find what you need.

Since you said your boat trailer has a 2,200 lb axle capacity and a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern the correct replacement hub you'd need is the part # 8-258-50UC1 that you referenced.

  • Replacement Idler Hub For Tie Down 11029C On 1-1/16" Straight Spindle with 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern
You will need either the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,200-lb Axles # 8-259-50UC1 for 8-12" wheels or the Assembly # 8-258-50UC1 for 13-15" wheels. Both these hubs use the 1-1//16" Bearing # L44649 for inner and outer bearings. And they use a Grease Seal # 10-9 (1.50" inner diameter).

  • Correct Hub Assembly for Dexter 8-258 Hub and 13-Inch Wheels
With axle 8-258, your bearings are either # L44643 or # L44649. # L44643 bearings have an inner diameter of 1 inch, while bearings # L44649 have an inner diameter of 1.063 inches. You can locate the bearing numbers on the bearings themselves, or you can measure the diameter using the image I've attached. We offer two hub assembly kits with # L44643 bearings. Item # 8-258BTUC1 is the standard hub assembly kit, which includes lug nuts, inner bearings and race, outer bearings and race, grease...

  • Does Grease Cap Included with # 8-258-50UC1-EZ Hub Act Like A Bearing Buddy
The # 8-258-50UC1-EZ Idler Hub Assembly you referenced includes the grease cap for an EZ Lube spindle. An EZ Lube spindle has a zerk fitting in the end of it so grease can quickly and easily be added to the hub. The rubber plug in the center of the grease cap is removable to allow access to the grease zerk. This particular hub can be used if you have a standard spindle with no grease zerk, but a standard hub is available as part # 8-258-50UC1. This hub includes a standard grease cap. Bearing...

  • Selecting Replacement Hubs for 1963 Travel Trailer
Thank you for the information from your vintage travel trailer's existing hub assembly. This is likely a casting number and will not give us what we need to find you correct replacement hubs, but it is not hard to determine correct new hubs. You will definitely want to replace both hubs. Things you need to match up are the hub bolt pattern, the axle weight rating and the bearing numbers. The linked article will help you with identifying the bolt pattern, the axle should have a sticker...

  • Can Boat Trailer With Shorelander Hub 4470337 go From 12 Inch to 13 Inch Tires & Wheels
Okay, we definitely have a solution for you here, and I'll start with the clearance; with trailer tires you need to have 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. For reference, a 5.30-12 tire (when inflated) is 5.6" wide and 21.9" diameter, and a 175/80-13 tire is 7" wide and 24.1" in diameter. So you can use those measurements (1.4" or a little more than 1-3/8" wider as well as 2.2"...

  • Trailer Hub that Fits 1 inch or 1-1/6 inch Diameter Spindle
We have hubs that are designed to fit spindle diameters that you mentioned of 1 inch and 1-1/6 inch. If you have a straight spindle with a 1 inch diameter you'd have a BT8 spindle and the hub part # 8-258BTUC1 that you referenced would fit. If you have a spindle with a straight diameter of 1-1/6 inch then you'd have a BTR spindle and would want a # 8-258-50UC1. The diameter of the spindle where the seal would ride on either would be 1.25 inch. If you can verify your spindle dimensions...

Given the information you've provided the best option is going to be the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,200-lb Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 - Galvanized # 8-258-50UC1. This hub is going to come with the inner bearing # L44649 and race, outer bearing # L44649 and race, grease seal, grease cap, and galvanized lug nuts included so that you won't have to purchase them separately. Thank you for your recent purchase from etrailer. The grease seal included with this hub kit has an inner diameter of 1.500-inches and an outer diameter of 1.987-inches. This seal should be fully seated into the rear bore of the hub so that it is flush with the back hub surface. The grease seal leak you experienced could come from the seal not being fully seated into the hub, or it could, as you noted, be a result of the over-filling of your Bearing Buddies. • Choosing Between Painted or GAL-DEX Coated Version of Dexter Trailer Hub
The GAL-DEX coated version of the hub you referenced is part # 8-258-50UC1. There is a very small price differential between the painted and the GAL-DEX version. The GAL-DEX coating can withstand a continuous 500 hour exposure to salt spray before corrosion sets in. In my opinion, the extra corrosion protection is well worth the small increase in price.
