Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

It does not fit my trailer wheel. So now I must pay freight charges to send it back and drive 3 hours one way to find the correct replacement part so I can get my Hot Shot trailer back in service and try to make a paycheck

You mentioned that you did not think that it was for a 10,000-pound axle. I wanted to ask if you could explain in more detail why you feel that it is not.

It is the wrong part....the hub is too big for my axle....I guess they make two different sizes for the 10000 lb axle....I need to swap it out....if we can determine you have the part I need in stock perhaps I can drive up there and swap it out.

  • How to Choose the Correct Spindle for the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-214-5UC1
We do carry the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-214-5UC1 which is an oil bath assembly for a 10,000 lb axle, but unfortunately we do not carry a spindle that is compatible with it. You would need to source that elsewhere, but I can give you some information so that you can be sure to get the correct spindle. If you look at the linked photo you will notice the highlighted B, C, and D spots. On the spindle that you purchase you need to make sure that B, where your seal sites, measures...

  • Technical Drawing for Dexter Hub Assembly # 8-214-5
I spoke with my contact at Dexter and was able to obtain the technical drawing for the Trailer Hub Assembly, # 8-214-5. Keep in mind that this hub was designed to fit a spindle from a 10K Dexter axle. I have attached this drawing for you. We do offer part # 8-214-5UC1 which includes the trailer hub assembly, lug nuts, inner bearing ( # 395S ) and race, outer bearing ( # 387A ) and race, oil seal and cap. These are designed to fit 10,000-lb axles with spindles that require a 3-1/4" ID grease...

  • Trailer Wheel Compatibility with 5/8 Inch Bolts on Dexter 10,000 lb Axle
When moving from the dual wheels on your Dexter 10K axle, you may want to consider the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 10,000-lb Axles - 8 on 6-1/2 - Oil Bath # 8-214-5UC1 as a replacement. This does have the 5/8 bolts you mentioned. The Taskmaster Steel Modular Trailer Wheel # TA55VR has lug bolt holes that are beveled so they will not be compatible. We don't have any 16-inch or 16-1/2 wheels that will work.

  • Replacement Hub and Drum for Dexter 10K Axles with 008-214-05 Hubs
The hub you need is # 8-214-5UC1. Since it is separate from the drum you would not need to replace both unless it is time to replace the drum as well if it is worn or damage. If it is then the drum part is # 9-27-1. We also have the mounting bolt for this hub assembly, # 7-103.

  • Recommendation For Spindle With Biggest Capacity That Fits Dexter Hub Assembly - Item # 8-214-5UC1
The biggest spindle we have in stock is a 3,500-lb axle like the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles, Item # T3584F-8974. Unfortunately we do not carry a spindle that is compatible with the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly, Item # 8-214-5UC1. This hub works with 10,000-lb capacity axles. You would need to source that elsewhere with an axle shop/company that carries the larger capacity axles.

  • Correct Oil Seal for Dexter 10K 8-214-5UC1 Hub/9-27 Brake Drum
The 9-27 (it's 9-27-1, actually) brake drum is part of a 2 piece hub/drum that uses # 8-214-5UC1 for the oil bath hub assembly. The correct oil seal is part # 10-56. The seal has an OD of 4.5 inches, and an ID of 3.125 inches. The # 10-63 you'd mentioned is too small, as its typically used with 8K capacity axles, so it wouldn't be compatible.

  • Will the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit Part # K2R1058D11 Fit a Dexter 10k General Duty Axle
Yes, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit part # K2R1058D11 will work with your Dexter general duty 10,000 lb axles as long as you have an 395S inner bearing (2.625" inner diameter) and 387A outer bearing (2.250" inner diameter). These brakes are only compatible with a specific type of hub which is the two piece Dexter 8-288. If you also need the hub then you can use the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # 8-214-5UC1. I have attached a review video of the hub for you as well.

  • Availability of Spindle and Hubs for 10,000 lb Trailer Axle
As you may have noticed, the highest capacity spindle we carry is for a 7,000 lb axle, # TRU37FR. Your best bet is to source the spindles for a 10,000 lb axle through a local trailer shop or dealer. If are able to source the spindles, we do have hubs for 10,000 lb axles. I'll list them below: # 8-430-5UC3 - Dexter Hub Drum for 9K to 10K axles manufactured after July 2009 (for non ABS brakes) - uses inner bearing # 387A, outer bearing # 25580 and oil seal # 10-51 # K08-288-90 - Dexter...

  • Disc Brake Availability for 10,000 lb Dexter Torsion Axles
The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D13 looks like it is exactly what you are needing. It is compatible with 10,000 lbs Dexter torsion axles, 17-1/2 inch wheels, and a hydraulic system. It does require a psi rating of 1,500 so as long as your EOH actuator can give that much output this is a viable option. To finish confirming that this kit will work great for your application you will just need to make sure that you have a 7 bolt brake mounting flange location and that your current wheels...

You'd need a set of 10k rated hydraulic drum brakes like the part # 23-404-405 per axle and then also a kit with the EOH actuator and electronics like the Hydrastar # HS381-9066 and the brake line kit # HS496-253 and you'd have everything you need to convert your trailer with three 10k rated axles with drum brakes to electric over hydraulic drum brakes.

One is the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D11E which is designed for Dexter axles with oil bath hubs made after May 2013 and the other is the # K2R1058D11HD for those made prior to 2009. • How to Convert Dexter 10k Drum Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Disc
We have just what you would need. For idler hubs you would first need to start with the part # 8-214-5UC1 (if you don't have these already) and then to install a disc brake kit specifically for these hubs you would need the part # K2R1058D11 for each axle. This is a Dexter 10k oil bath setup just like what you have. For an electric over hydraulic drum actuator for your trailer you would want the part # HBA16-252-82.
