The unique free-backing design, patented by DICO, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.

These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

My backing plate, brakes and wheel cylinder arrived promptly. It was easy to install and solved the problem I had with that wheel locking up after braking.
I have been trailing my boat without problems since.

After purchasing a used boat I decided to take a look at the brake system on the trailer. To my surprise it was in horrible condition. Both side were so rusted up they wouldn't even move when the brakes were applied. I went shopping online to see what I could find. I came across etrailer.com and was extremely happy i did. The price was lower than anywhere else and free shipping . Brakes arrived in 3 days ! Took me a entire 10 minutes to put one side on. Fit was perfect. I do suggest purchasing new hardware...will definitely make the install smoother.

I really didn't know what I was doing, but watched a few internet videos and decided to tear into my grinding trailer wheels. The pads were past expired , down to metal. The whole 23 year old assembly looked rusted and in poor repair. I started out shopping for parts, like new brake shoes, and found these complete assemblies for only a few dollars more on eTrailer. The excellent documentation, photos, and discussion sold me. I just finished installing the left (drivers side ) unit, and everything went together great. Thanks again!

I ordered a pair of these to replace a set of regular surge brakes, Installation was super simple and fast, 1 hour start to finish. Looks like they will hold up nicely. No need to buy new brake shoes, just install these! I would recommend these to anyone

Thanks again etrailer for you great customer service. I received these the day prior to taking my boat for a weekend camping trip. One of my servos began leaking earlier in the year and I delayed ordering these complete brake plates till the last minute. I needed to install the one prior to taking the trailer out so I jacked up the trailer and started in. Using an electric 1/2" impact wrench (one of my favorite effort-saving tools) made removal of the four bolts a breeze. I had to stop by the auto store to buy a 3/8" flare tool to make removal of the brake line possible prior to starting. Reconnecting the brake line took the most time since the new servo had a slightly different angle to the connection. Once I got the thread started on that it took only a few minutes to bolt on the plate, clean and reinstall the the drum and bolt on the wheel. It was safe traveling over the weekend . These complete backplates are sweet, so glad I opted to get them.

Hey Adam! You can do what you're wanting but not with two of the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension item # A35RD545E you referenced. You'll need different hubs those won't work with hydraulic brakes. I Want to Replace All of the Surge Brake Equipment on a 2002 Performance Boat Trailer
The surge brake equipment of your trailer consists of the brake lines, drum brakes and the brake actuator. To ensure I recommend the correct parts for your trailer I will need a little more information. A brake line kit is pretty universal. For a single axle trailer, I recommend using part # T4829900. This kit comes with all of the lines and fittings you will need to replace everything from the actuator to the brake assemblies. For an actuator, I would need to know what type of actuator...

Looking for Free-Backing Hydraulic Brake Assembly with 2-7/8 Inch Hole Spacing
The four inch spacing mentioned in the product descriptions is measured diagonally, but the side to side spacing is 2-7/8 inches, which is standard for a brake mounting flange on a 3500 lb capacity axle (see photo.) If you click the link, you can see the free backing hydraulic brake assemblies we offer for a 3500 lb axle. The Titan 10x2-1/4 inch Free Backing Hydraulic drum brake assemblies, part # T4071500 for the right side and # T4071600 would be a good choice.

You absolutely can install free-backing hydraulic drum brakes on your trailer. These will make reversing your trailer for loading and unloading a much easier process. You will want to make certain that you match not only the brake size but also the axle weight rating and mounting pattern. We offer free-backing brakes from Demco for 3500-lb axles, parts # 40716 and # 40715, as well as the Titan units you referenced, parts # T4071600 and # T4071500.

Recommended 10-Inch Brake Assembly With Aluminum Wheel Cylinder
We have just what you are looking for. The brake I recommend is part # AKFBBRK-35L-D. This is a 10-inch brake assembly that is 2-1/4 inches thick and has an aluminum wheel cylinder. This assembly is designed for 3,500-lb axles and will work with 13, 14, and 15-inch wheels and it has a 4-bolt brake flange mounting pattern. This assembly is for the left hand(driver side) of the trailer. The brake assembly for the right hand(passenger side) is part # AKFBBRK-35R-D.

Will Titan Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assemblies Fit in Place of Atwood Assemblies
The Atwood 10 inch electric brakes did use the same 4-bolt pattern as Titan free-backing brake # T4071600 for the left and # T4071500 for the right so you could use the Titan brakes if you wanted to.

Can a Titan Model 10 Actuator Support Two Drum Brake Axles
A model 10 Titan actuator can handle the volume of brake fluid required to activate the brakes of a tandem axle trailer. You would just need to add the brake lines, brake assemblies, and hub drums to the axle so that it will have brakes as well.
