Features to know about

Climbing Snowy Roads and Driveways: Grooved Square Links Bite Hard

When you’re facing deep snow or slick ice, these grooved square links really dig in. The ladder pattern grabs as you roll forward, keeping traction steady in heavy snow or muddy slush. Each 5.6 mm (0.22") thick link is built to handle serious winter conditions without slipping or clogging up, so getting up steep grades or through a fresh snowpack feels more controlled and confident.

Get Moving Fast When the Weather Turns: Built-In Cams Tighten Easily

When it’s freezing outside, you don’t want to wrestle with your chains. These assisted-tensioning cams make it easy to snug things up fast—just twist the cams with the included tool until the chain pulls tight around the tire. The quick tensioning design means less fumbling with cold fingers and more time moving safely down the road. Rubber adjusters (sold separately) can add an extra layer of security for a snug fit.

Using tool to twist cams on Pewag tire chains for proper tensioning during installation step 4.

Keep Working Season After Season: Reversible Design Doubles the Life

Each chain can be flipped and used on either side, letting you spread out wear and extend the life of your set. It’s a simple detail that makes a big difference for anyone who chains up often through the winter. Dry them off after use and you’ll have them ready to go for the next round of storms.

Dependable Chains Built to Take Abuse: Nickel Manganese Alloy Steel Construction

Snow, salt, and ice can take their toll, but these chains are made from nickel manganese alloy steel to resist corrosion and wear far better than typical carbon steel. They’re case-hardened too, giving them a rugged outer shell that resists scratching and rust while keeping the inner core tough but flexible. This keeps them ready for harsh use trip after trip.

One Set That Covers Multiple Tires: Fits 14" to 17-1/2" Sizes

If you’ve got a mix of tires within that range, this pair of chains keeps things simple. Each chain is designed to fit tires from 14" up to 17-1/2", so you can stay prepared for changing setups without juggling multiple sets. Quantity: 2 chains. 90-day warranty.

Step 1 of Pewag tire chain installation showing chains laid on the ground to remove tangles before placement on tire.

Connecting Pewag tire chains behind the tire during installation step 3 for a secure fit.

Note

To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

We use these on our Frieghtliner M2's and these are the only chains that we haven't had break. I will only use pewag in the future.

by:

Used Christmas Eve in 10 inches of snow. F150 climbed two miles, up to a mountain neighborhood, for family gathering. Easy to fit. Didn't loosen.

by:

Hi Carol,

The chain packaging was
op0ened and looked pre-used with holes in the sack as well.

There were no cable ends included to pull the chains over the tires so I am unsure these are correct for 235/55 R20 tires as listed. For now will use another vehicle, I may need to exchange thes, ideally that will not be a problem for you guys.

thank you!

by:

Overpriced compared to competitors by 100% Have yet to check size

by:

Nice Chains---The chains we received were for a light truck. The tires we have are P215 70R15 and the chains do not fit. We need 2 more links to make them even come close to closing. We have the truck in the garage in ideal conditions--but if we were out on the road---this is impossible. Sent an e-mail to e-trailers and waiting for a response. Also, 2 of the side links have been put on backwards from the factory.

by:

the chains showed up and appear to be correct, thank you

by:

These chains are excellent. Made in USA from what appears to be an Austrian company. This size fit a 2019 lX570 very well. 275/50-21 Way easier to install and more traction than cable chains.

by:

Service that can’t be beat. Ordered and received snow chains in mere days and just before the January 2022 blizzard . Pamela, you’re awesome.

by:

Great set of chains, fit as they should, and best of all, THEY ARE NOT FROM CHINA. The service from etrailer was great as usual.

by:

Great traction in deep snow or hard packed snow/ice.

by:

Normally don’t write reviews like this, but making an exception in this case. I ordered this set of Pewag chains on a Sunday evening and had them in my possession the following Wednesday morning. The quality of the chains are excellent, but the quality of the service I received was exceptional! I cannot remember the last time I received customer service like this? I received a personal phone call regarding my order and emails updating me of its progress. Even received an email after delivery making sure I was happy! Makes me want to complete another purchase! THANK YOU!!!

by:

Holding up real good so far. my only complaint is the chain tightening tool is pretty weak. I'm using the tool from a cheap set

by:

I got the glacier multi arm adjusters and these Pewag chains best purchase I made for Montana elk hunt 2019. Snowed every day in mountains. Had to break a trail every day in order to keep road open. Worked great under tough conditions.

by:

It is always a great experience working with or ordering from etrailer. I have yet to be disappointed with any of the products they carry. I will continue to use etrailer as my trusted provider.

by:

Customer service was beyond expectations. I received the incorrect chains and once I notified etrailer of the issue they immediately corrected it and I was on the road within a few days with new chains. Pewag quality remains and now my work truck and personal rig are outfitted the right way. Thanks!

by:

Purchased for 2016 Sprinter 4WD 140. Very pleased. Works well here in Pacific NW snow and ice. Heavy chain, but installs easy enough. Will need designated storage space. Great service and delivery.

by:

Great service provided by etrailer I will definitely purchase again when tire chains are needed. As for the chains themselves, very impressed with the quality and ease at which they install. Have purchased Pewag chain before so I new the quality, would be there and it is.

Am glad to have these chains just in case and for the trips through the mountains :) They are very high quality, Pewag is the best for chains, whether for snow tire or security.. I bought a cheaper set (A different brand) a few years back from one of your local auto parts stores, one of the links broke the first day I used it, very low quality.. Sometimes it is a bummer upfront paying the higher cost for quality, but in the long run it is always worth it.. These Pewag chains can not be beat.. You can tell they built these to last, very strong and durable. The old chains I had might as well have been mesh wire compared to these bad boys.. Plus before I ordered I looked up the Versatility so these chains fit my 4runner now and they should fit my dream Land Cruiser that I am hoping to buy in a few years.

I am always very impressed with ordering from Etrailer.. They are always very helpful, professional and seem to actually care about their customers; which many businesses seem to not anymore.. They ship quickly and I always seem to get what I ordered faster than I think it will take. Prices are very reasonable, People are great to work with. The way they run their business is the way it should be ran. I am very happy with this company and am glad to buy products from them, I always love helping supporting companies that do such a wonderful job at what they specialize in! You guys should carry the Pewag security chain as well. Thanks again!

by:

I bought the chains, the Titan chain adjuster #TCMA3 and the cam tightening tool and all work great. The chains fit my 245 60/R20 tires just as expected. I used the drape over method to test out the chains, but I would probably try to roll onto them in practice because the tire is so big, there's some space between cross chains when I brought the ends together. I could probably just drive a bit and then retighten them.

by:

Quality made chains are priceless! We run Pewag chains on our trucks and equipment and get great life and performance from the all square chains.

by:

So far, these chains look like they will deliver. I wanted something better than a cable chain that only lasts one storm. In my local, we typically get freezing rain with temperatures in the 30's. These should be good on ice. Installation was fairly easy and the cam tensioners pulled the chains tight. I also ordered the chain tensioning bungie.

by:

Pewag PWE2228SC chains are nothing fancy. Good old traditional design. Came in a canvas bag with no closure. Successfully mounted them on P165/70R17 tires. Have not tested them in real-life snowy conditions. After chains are on, should drive vehicle 1/4 to 1/2 tire revolution, then tighten chain hooks further. Adding additional tension cords almost a must. Picture shows chain loosening at 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions after driving only a few feet. Consider adding threaded chain link to tie down extra free links to prevent them from flopping around when driving. Flopping chains are know to cut brake and ABS lines and cause other damage to the vehicle, especially if chains are installed on front tires. Thule XG12 Pro may be a better choice for front tires, because nothing flops around on the medial side of chains.

by:

Good price, great service, speedy delivery everything an online transaction should be. My item has only been in my possession approximately 4 hours have not checked to see how it fits yet.. the etrailer already chomping for a review so I'll go ahead and give it to em.. oh look they want photos to ?LOL? Not sure what I'm supposed to take a photo of? it's dark outside! I think all this junk started with China's social rating jazz but Who knows? so far so good

by:

I've not used the chains as of yet, however, the quality of the chains is unbelievable...
If your on the fence about which brand to buy consider this to be a great choice if you are looking for quality and satisfaction.

Haven't used on the road yet, since luckily I didn't encounter snow/ice on my recent drive... but did try on. Their etrailer web site clearly specified what size of tires the chains fit and the details of the specific chain models, like type U. The Sprinter manual specified type U chains. Delivery was per their commitment. Fit is good and triple cam method seems that it will work well to keep the chains snug on the tires. The only thing that seems that could be improved, is the cams are tightened and loosened with a supplied L shaped tool. If this was a T shaped tool, this would allow better leverage to be applied to the cams. Thanks

  • Use of Tire Chains on a 5th Wheel Trailer
Tire chains are usually only placed on a tow vehicle, and then only on the drive wheels. We do not have any experience with using or recommending them for use on the tires of a 5th wheel trailer. This is something I would approach very cautiously and only after contacting the trailer maker for approval. Have your trailer VIN handy when you call them. Chains vary in how much clearance they need within the fenders/wheel wells and this is an important consideration. Also, the specific tire...

  • Recommended Class U Tire Chains for 2011 Mercedes Sprinter Dually
Using the part # PWE2219SC that you referenced would provide 1 pair of chains to cover two single tires. If you wanted chains on all four rear tires, part # PWE4219SC would be a better choice for dual wheels. You would need one set for each side. Should you follow the advice of Mercedes and chain all four rear tires, or just two of them? That will have to be up to your discretion. Having all four rear tires chained up will provide superior traction versus having chains on two tires. As...

According to Glacier Chain, the # PW1042 cable snow tire chains you mentioned are indeed a fit for the LT225/75R-16 tires you mentioned. These cable chains are perfect for emergency use, but are not the most durable of choices. If you are planning frequent trips into areas where the chains might be needed, I would recommend something that would be more durable that you would get many uses from, like the Glacier Square-Link Snow Tire Chains, part # PWE2219SC.
