Features to know about

Climbing Through Deep Snow and Ice: Grooved Square Links Bite Hard

When the road is buried in snow or coated with ice, these grooved square links dig in and hold tight. The grooves cut deeper than standard square or round links, giving you the kind of grip that keeps you moving up steep grades or through rutted icy patches. The ladder pattern spreads that traction across the tread, so each rotation pulls you forward with solid control.

Get Reliable Grip Without the Struggle: Built-In Cams for Assisted Tensioning

Dealing with loose chains in freezing weather is no fun. These chains make it simple with built-in cams that let you twist and tighten until they’re snug. The assisted tensioning system pulls the chain evenly around the tire, cutting down on the need for constant readjustments. For an even tighter fit, rubber adjusters are recommended.

Chains That Hold Up to Harsh Winter Use: Nickel Manganese Alloy Steel Construction

Winter driving can be tough on gear, but these chains are built to take it. The nickel manganese alloy steel construction stands up to wear and resists corrosion, so you can count on them year after year. Each link is case hardened for extra strength, giving you a tough outer layer that deals with abrasion and a core that absorbs shock without cracking.

Get More Life Out of Every Set: Reversible Design Doubles the Wear

You don’t have to worry about these chains wearing out quickly. The reversible design lets you flip them over once one side starts showing wear, effectively doubling their service life. With a little care—drying them after each use—you’ll be set for many winters to come.

Ready for Heavy Snow Tires: Fits 22-1/2" to 24-1/2" Sizes

These chains are made for serious winter conditions and fit large tire sizes from 22-1/2" to 24-1/2". Whether you’re facing mountain passes, icy driveways, or deep snow zones, they deliver the traction and durability you need to keep rolling safely.

Installing Snow Chains

Step 1 of pewag tire chain installation showing chains laid flat on the ground to remove tangles before fitting on the tire.

Step 2 of pewag tire chain installation showing chains draped over the tire with proper alignment before driving forward.

Step 3 of pewag tire chain installation showing user connecting chain ends behind the tire for a secure fit.

Step 4 of pewag tire chain installation showing how to insert tool into cams and twist to tighten sidewall chains.

Step 5 of pewag tire chain installation showing rubber adjusters attached for extra tension and secure fit.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the pewag Tire Chains w/ Cams

Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the pewag All Square 5.6 millimeter Snow Tire Chains. These are gonna be a ladder pattern style chain, so they're gonna be a little more rough of a ride than the diagonal or diamond pattern chains, but that's not a huge deal, these aren't gonna be the roughest ride of all of them though, there are some all square snow tire chains that are a little bit bigger, these are 5.6 millimeters linked thick, so these are relatively larger, but not as big as they can go, so they're gonna get you a decent amount of traction, and these are gonna be less traction than some of the V-bar style chains. These do have a little bit stronger steel material, it's manganese nickel alloy, some of them are low carbon steel, so these are definitely winning when it comes to how hard and how strong they are, so they should last a long time. And one thing I like about it is just the cam tensioners, they really do help get a really nice fit on the chain, so that is something to kinda think about, just because as treads start to kinda go down, sometimes the diameter of your tire changes ever so slightly, so with the cam tensioners, you can be confident that they're as tight as they can be, so they're not gonna fall off or anything and damage the vehicle. These won't damage your wheels, so notice how we have a very large amount of gap between the chain and our rims, so even if we we're in very, very thick, heavy snow where it's pushing in on the side walls, it's not gonna go and scratch our wheels, that's something I look at, just because these are nice and I wanna keep them nice, so you don't have to worry about that with these. If you wanna put these on just the back wheels of whatever vehicle you may have, you can do that, it does come in a pack of two, but if you do wanna put it on the front wheel as well, you're gonna have to grab two of these.

So they have a pretty big bag and it's not a canvas bag, so it is not gonna rip near as easily, so that's a good thing. There's plenty of room in the bag too to get all the chains in there, so you don't have to worry about just kinda having to stuff stuff in. A lot of times, when you get products, sometimes, they don't get packaged up as nice and neatly as they did before, but with these, they have plenty of room in this bag. But once it's all in there, it's about this size, it'll fit underneath your backseat or in your toolbox, whatever you have going on on your vehicle. But when it comes to these, I think they're gonna be a pretty good option for you.

And that's pretty much it for a look at the pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains with cam tensioners..

Pewag PWE2228SC chains are nothing fancy. Good old traditional design. Came in a canvas bag with no closure. Successfully mounted them on P165/70R17 tires. Have not tested them in real-life snowy conditions. After chains are on, should drive vehicle 1/4 to 1/2 tire revolution, then tighten chain hooks further. Adding additional tension cords almost a must. Picture shows chain loosening at 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions after driving only a few feet. Consider adding threaded chain link to tie down extra free links to prevent them from flopping around when driving. Flopping chains are know to cut brake and ABS lines and cause other damage to the vehicle, especially if chains are installed on front tires. Thule XG12 Pro may be a better choice for front tires, because nothing flops around on the medial side of chains.

So far, these chains look like they will deliver. I wanted something better than a cable chain that only lasts one storm. In my local, we typically get freezing rain with temperatures in the 30's. These should be good on ice. Installation was fairly easy and the cam tensioners pulled the chains tight. I also ordered the chain tensioning bungie.

Quality made chains are priceless! We run Pewag chains on our trucks and equipment and get great life and performance from the all square chains.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
Haven't used on the road yet, since luckily I didn't encounter snow/ice on my recent drive... but did try on. Their etrailer web site clearly specified what size of tires the chains fit and the details of the specific chain models, like type U. The Sprinter manual specified type U chains. Delivery was per their commitment. Fit is good and triple cam method seems that it will work well to keep the chains snug on the tires. The only thing that seems that could be improved, is the cams are tightened and loosened with a supplied L shaped tool. If this was a T shaped tool, this would allow better leverage to be applied to the cams. Thanks

Great service provided by etrailer I will definitely purchase again when tire chains are needed. As for the chains themselves, very impressed with the quality and ease at which they install. Have purchased Pewag chain before so I new the quality, would be there and it is.

2013 Toyota 4Runner
Am glad to have these chains just in case and for the trips through the mountains :) They are very high quality, Pewag is the best for chains, whether for snow tire or security.. I bought a cheaper set (A different brand) a few years back from one of your local auto parts stores, one of the links broke the first day I used it, very low quality.. Sometimes it is a bummer upfront paying the higher cost for quality, but in the long run it is always worth it.. These Pewag chains can not be beat.. You can tell they built these to last, very strong and durable. The old chains I had might as well have been mesh wire compared to these bad boys.. Plus before I ordered I looked up the Versatility so these chains fit my 4runner now and they should fit my dream Land Cruiser that I am hoping to buy in a few years.

I am always very impressed with ordering from Etrailer.. They are always very helpful, professional and seem to actually care about their customers; which many businesses seem to not anymore.. They ship quickly and I always seem to get what I ordered faster than I think it will take. Prices are very reasonable, People are great to work with. The way they run their business is the way it should be ran. I am very happy with this company and am glad to buy products from them, I always love helping supporting companies that do such a wonderful job at what they specialize in! You guys should carry the Pewag security chain as well. Thanks again!

2022 Nissan Titan
I bought the chains, the Titan chain adjuster #TCMA3 and the cam tightening tool and all work great. The chains fit my 245 60/R20 tires just as expected. I used the drape over method to test out the chains, but I would probably try to roll onto them in practice because the tire is so big, there's some space between cross chains when I brought the ends together. I could probably just drive a bit and then retighten them.

Purchased for 2016 Sprinter 4WD 140. Very pleased. Works well here in Pacific NW snow and ice. Heavy chain, but installs easy enough. Will need designated storage space. Great service and delivery.

Customer service was beyond expectations. I received the incorrect chains and once I notified etrailer of the issue they immediately corrected it and I was on the road within a few days with new chains. Pewag quality remains and now my work truck and personal rig are outfitted the right way. Thanks!

Holding up real good so far. my only complaint is the chain tightening tool is pretty weak. I'm using the tool from a cheap set

Normally don’t write reviews like this, but making an exception in this case. I ordered this set of Pewag chains on a Sunday evening and had them in my possession the following Wednesday morning. The quality of the chains are excellent, but the quality of the service I received was exceptional! I cannot remember the last time I received customer service like this? I received a personal phone call regarding my order and emails updating me of its progress. Even received an email after delivery making sure I was happy! Makes me want to complete another purchase! THANK YOU!!!

Great set of chains, fit as they should, and best of all, THEY ARE NOT FROM CHINA. The service from etrailer was great as usual.

2019 Lexus LX 570
These chains are excellent. Made in USA from what appears to be an Austrian company. This size fit a 2019 lX570 very well. 275/50-21 Way easier to install and more traction than cable chains.

2011 Toyota Tacoma
Nice Chains---The chains we received were for a light truck. The tires we have are P215 70R15 and the chains do not fit. We need 2 more links to make them even come close to closing. We have the truck in the garage in ideal conditions--but if we were out on the road---this is impossible. Sent an e-mail to e-trailers and waiting for a response. Also, 2 of the side links have been put on backwards from the factory.

I double checked the Pewag fit guide and your tire size calls for this chain. We will be in touch to request photos of the backwards links and follow up with you about getting you properly fitting chains.
