Features to know about

Tackling Steep Snowy Roads: Diamond Pattern Keeps You Moving

When snow piles up or you’re dealing with icy hills, these Konig chains grip where regular tires can’t. The diamond pattern gives steady contact with the road, so you get constant traction instead of the slip-and-grab feeling you get from ladder styles. The square links bite into snow and light ice, helping you crawl up or down steep driveways and back roads with confidence.

No More Stopping to Retighten: Self-Tensioning System Works as You Drive

Once you hook them up and start rolling, the chains tighten and center themselves automatically. That means no pulling over to readjust. The design saves time and keeps the chain snug so you can focus on driving instead of worrying about tension. It’s a big help when the weather turns and you just want to get where you’re going safely.

Step 1 of tire chain installation showing chains laid flat on the ground to remove tangles before fitting onto the tire.

Step 2 of Konig tire chain installation showing connection of blue cable ends behind the tire.

Step 3 of Konig tire chain installation showing front connection of red hook to red link on tire.

Step 4 of Konig tire chain installation showing tensioning chain fed through clip at bottom of tire.

Final step of Konig tire chain installation showing hook stretched across tire for secure fit before driving.

Smooth Ride and Solid Grip: Square Links and Low-Profile Design

Each link has a square shape that digs in well while staying smooth enough for on-road use. You get less vibration than with big, round links, so the ride feels more controlled. The low-profile build meets SAE Class S standards, working well when clearance is tight but traction still matters.

Chains That Last Season After Season: Manganese Nickel Alloy Steel Resists Rust

These chains are built from high-quality manganese nickel alloy steel, so they hold up to winter moisture and road salt. The coated hooks keep them from freezing to your fingers, and nylon bumpers protect your wheels from scratches. Dry them off before stowing them in the durable storage case, and they’ll be ready for the next round of snow.

Ready When You Need Them: Lightweight, Compact, and Easy to Store

Because they’re lightweight and come in a tough case with a kneeling mat, these chains are easy to keep in your trunk all winter. When that unexpected storm rolls in, you can have them on and tensioned quickly—just drape, connect, and drive.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Video Transcript for Complete Breakdown of the Konig Tire Chains

Adam: Hi, everyone. Adam with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the line of Konig's CG9 snow tire chains. So these tire chains are a really simple install. I know you're going to be using these in a probably not ideal weather, so being able to throw these on your tires in a quick manner is probably going to be the best way to do it. So it is very, very easy to install.

Like I said, it does come with a built in tensioner so you don't have to bring any extra materials with you. Also it was a tool free installation, so you don't have to worry about bringing those together either. It is a manganese nickel alloy chain, which is going to last a very long time and resist against all that salt on the road when there's snow. So it does have a nice diamond pattern to it.It's going to give you a lot more surface area compared to your ladder style chains. So these CG9 tire chains are going to have a very low profile.

As you can see here, we don't have a whole lot of wheel space but it is SAE S class certified so you don't really have to worry about any rubbing. This is a relatively smaller D link shaped type snow chain and what that's going to do, it's going to basically not give you such a radical difference between the rubber and the tips of your chains and that's going to give you a smoother ride when you're going down the road. And these also are going to protect your rim as well when they are installed. As you can see, the closest parts of this tire chain are plastic and especially this rubber tensioner here and a plastic is designed for this part right here, and that's not going to really make any damage to any type of wheel that you may have.So these do come in and pair of two and for your all wheel drive applications. Just grab another pair of two on etrailer.com.

It does come in a nice sturdy case. A lot of them come in canvas bags, which eventually wear and tear over time. So having a nice, sturdy, plastic case is always nice to be able to store them when you're not using them. It is a honestly really, really simple install. It's going to protect your rim.

Like we said earlier, it does have a built in tensioner, so you don't have to bring any additional tools or equipment for them to be installed. It's relatively easy. And on top of that it's going to get the job done. So let's just go ahead and install them together. So the first thing you're going to want to do when you're planning on putting these on your tires is lay them all flat. Make sure everything is nice and straight, there's no kinks in your links. And once all that is done, then you can go ahead and feed the Konig tensioner first, back around your tire. And once you do that, grab all this, go behind your tire and you go ahead and connect them. And while you're back here, just take your chains, start draping them over. We want to get this part right in the middle of our tread. Once you get them nice in place, you go ahead and take your red hook, hook it to your red link, and then you can go to the bottom here. And you do have this self tensioner right here and you pull this back, put that in there, and then give it a nice tug. Once you think it's nice and snug, you grab this other plastic red lever and connect it to your loop down low. Make sure everything's nice and tight, and we do recommend that you roll over these a couple times. Go back out check and make sure everything's nice and tight, and once it is, then you're ready to hit the road again. Well, thanks for watching at our look at the Konig's CG9 tire chains.

only got to use them twice. But in their few hours of service they performed wonderfully. Attached well onto my wheels and made me feel comfortable while driving. Bit of a pain to install being actually metal chains as opposed to tire socks, but they weren't too bad once you got the hang of where to connect them all.

Turned out pretty well. They fit snugly and only hard part about putting them on was enduring the cold when trying to close up the links without gloves. Only used a few times but they certainly did the job.

2016 Toyota Prius
I bought two tire chains for the front wheels of my 2016 Toyota Prius C one year ago and they work wonderfully— I drove to the mountain so many times to ski and it was pretty easy to put the chains on and off as needed, with a little practice (definitely practice at home first!). But they make driving in the snow/ice WAY safer. Highly recommend
by:
Easy to put on, and give great traction in snow and ice, for those times when snow tires alone aren't enough.

So far, I have *not* had a need to use the Thule chains which I bought a year ago.

They still look excellent in their case.

I've used it a grand total of once, and after cursing and grumbling and finally getting it detangled... I only needed it to conquer the entirely untouched hills on either side of my house. Not upset with the product, just disappointed in my plowpeople

I had called multiple places and searched Google trying to find chains for my tire size, but no one had results for the make, model, and year of my vehicle. Since I had purchased chains from etrailer years ago for my previous car, I decided to give them a call.

I spoke with Abbey, who was also confused as to why my tire size wasn’t showing any product matches. She placed me on a brief hold to consult with an expert, and it turned out they did have the right product. I purchased the chains and installed them for a fitting—and they worked perfectly!

Thank you, Abbey, for going the extra mile to find a solution and the right product for my needs. Great customer service!
by:
Very happy with how easy it is to install these. I really appreciated the installation videos showing the different tire sizes - we got the right size first try for both of my cars. These are the only chains I will order from now on. Highly recommend.
by:
Tunnel View at Yosemite. Chains worked perfectly, but not quite as easy to install as the video would suggest. I made the mistake of pulling over into 3-4 inches of snow to put them on. The snow packed around the base of the tire made it very difficult. That's not something you encounter when practicing in your nice warm garage. But once on, the chains stayed secure, and the car handled and braked with confidence.

That's a pretty awesome shot you took, John! Before I read your review I looked at your pic and I can see what you mean how it would be difficult to put the chains on with all the snow packed under there. I'm glad that you were able to get them on and enjoy the rest of the drive.

I needed chains for my FWD Volvo up in the Catskills, NY. I have a dirt driveway, the FWD Volvo from 2017 can’t handle an inch of snow/ice surprisingly for a Swedish car. I searched for high quality chains and ended up here. I asked Josh questions before purchasing, he was so helpful. The chains are magic, tricky to install the first time, but now I can install easily. They work so well. They store back in their plastic box easily to place in the trunk. Very pleased.

I was looking to have snow tire chains for my upcoming trip to northern Wisconsin. I found these to be very easy to install as the instructions were very clear. I like that they come with a case to make them easy to store in my Ford Escape.

These tire chains got me out of jam recently when I had gone down a 1 lane thanks to massive snow road and there was no place to turn around. I put on the chains and was able to do a multi-point turn to get back down the road with ease.

I think this is the fourth pair of these chains I have purchased for various vehicles. I have had great success with these over the years. No chains are "easy" to put on but these make it about as easy as it can be. Once you are familiar with the process it takes only a few minutes per tire. The self-tensioning is the best feature. The storage box even has a hook and loop pad on the back so it won't slide around in your carpeted trunk or back seat. I got these for my '25 F150 Lariat. Our vacation home is at the end of a one-mile lane that is steep, snow covered all winter and usually icy in places from the sun. Snow tires and chains are a necessity for us.

I love these chains, and etrailer is the best! As a 69 yr old retired grandma, I work part-time at a ski resort. A few weeks ago, we were expecting 8-10 inches of snow/ice and I was scheduled to work. So, I put these idiot-proof, color-coded, self-adjusting chains on my Highlander front low profile tires and waited for weather. See photo. I worked my full shift, came out to ice/snow in dark, and drove safely home. Oh, and the carrying case comes with a folded plastic sheet, but with my old knees I added a foam pad!

I have a 2019 Honda CRV and have never owned tire chains before so I dont have anything to compare these to but they are easy to put on and take off and they conquer a steep icy unpaved drive way in The Catskills perfectly. There are some plastic parts that probably should be metal. One of them - the tension hook - broke on one of my chains (see photo) and when I reported this to etrailer.com with a photo to prove it, they sent another set. So I am pleased overall with the service from etrailer.com but am only giving 4 stars for the product on account of the breakage. Also they rusted after one season but that hasn't impacted performance.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado
These are really easy to put on and take off. I have used them three times on my 2019 chevy colorado (4wd) to deal with high elevation mountain snow. After each use, I washed them, hung to dry and then put back in the truck. They are so awesome, I recommend them to others.

2022 Honda Odyssey
I bought these for my 2022 Honda Odyssey for a trip to Colorado. We had to use them during a chain law enforcement through Wolf Creek Pass. They're easy to put on and take off and performance was spot on through snow pack and ice. Recommend getting familiar with them in clear conditions prior to use as its more difficult. I had no problems and would recommend for anyone, especially the novice.

Very impressed! On a cement floor you can have the chains installed and snugged in under 10 minutes. Also an excellent increase in traction for a RWD van. Definitely recommend the konig XG-12's. Haven't installed while travelling but I don't think it will be very difficult.

We had a demo day a while back and I remember this brand being one of my favorites for the reasons you just said! Ease of use is key. Thanks for sending in the photos too! If you wind up using them - let us know how it goes!

by:
Well, I would say a little harder to put on correctly than advertised, but I called customer support and they helped me. Also watching all of the videos helped because each one was worded a little differently. Definitely would suggest one or two dry runs before you are in the elements. Important to realize to slide the plastic coated cable to the backside of the tire and center the chains after connecting the plastic coated cable and the small red hook. Once I figured this out I was able to almost perfectly center the chains (at least on one tire). On the other tire I couldn't get it perfectly centered (see photos). After about an 1/8 of a mile of very low speed driving it still didn't center but maybe with more driving at higher speeds it would. Also important to remember to have the yellow end of the chain on your right hand side beofore sliding behind the tire and making the first connection. One question I still have is how tight to pull the tension cable after you put it through the stop device. Every video seems a little bit different as to how tight you pull the cable by hand before connecting it to the tensioning device. As far as taking them off I tried four times to line up my car perfectly so I wouldn't have to drive over the chains after disconnecting them but this was not possible for me. So, with the plastic coated cable on top I just disconnected the connections in reverse and then put all the hooks and components off to the side and drove off/over the chains, which seemed to work fine. Will see how they work in the snow and ice but I'm hopeful they will do well.

Outstanding service! With an upcoming trip and recent snow storm etrailer helped me get my snow chains just in time for our vacation. Without the chains I would have been screwed. Communication with this company is impressive. The original chains I ordered would not have arrived in time and the sales team called me right away to find alternative solutions. Chains for 315/35/20 size tires are not easy to find. Really happy with my purchase. Thank you.
by:
These chains are excellent quality and super easy to install. I watched the video and hold them out of the package line them up. Click them together. The tensioner works great. I rolled the truck back-and-forth. They are on and tight. It is well worth the money to have something high-quality that will work more than once.
by:
Previously my only experience with chains was using cable chains on front wheel drive cars, where turning the wheels was necessary to ensure they had a good fit.

I bought these chains for my 2023 Kia EV6 with stock 235/55/19 tires. The instruction manual for the car says to put chains on the rear wheels and I was worried that getting chains on the rear wheels would be difficult. Despite never having used this style of chains before I was easily able to test-fit both chains with 15 minutes, and the chains fit very snuggly and didn't move when I move the car a cars length. Getting the inner loop positioned right is something that took a couple tries to get right, and I'm sure there might be a bit more room for improvement :)

I was slightly concerned about the chains damaging the rims or other parts of the car, but with the included spacers (not applied in the picture) I think this won't be a problem.

I'm taking the car up to the snow this weekend and if I use the chains I'll provide an update.

etrailer did a great job clearly communicating to me when my chains would arrive with no fuss.

Great Quality. Quick Installation and very easy to take off. Self-tensioning worked like a charm. I would definitely recommend them.

I bought these to use on my 2023 Rav4 TRD Off-Road OEM Falken AT Tires.

I highly recommend installing them at home a few times before heading up. Watching the etrailer videos on YouTube was also a huge help.

Hey Pete, It looks like the Konig XG-12 Pro only fits larger wheel sizes so you'd need to go with their CG-9 model which would be part # TH00023060. This set of chains is self-tensioning, making them only take a few minutes to put on and be ready to go. I've attached a short video below where Adam will show you how to install them.
