Note: This dual-arm rack reduces the need for a bike frame adapter bar (sold separately) to mount a children's, women's, or alternative frame bicycle. However, to mount certain bikes or to keep your bike level on the rack, a bike adapter bar may be required. Most step-through bikes, dual-suspension bikes, and small children's bikes will require a bike adapter bar.

Yakima SpareRide

The Yakima SpareRide lets you carry 2 bikes on your vehicle's factory spare tire. The rack features folding dual arms and SuperCush anti-sway cradles with ratcheting ZipStrip straps. It installs with a hand knob and universal mounting plate, and it includes locks to secure your bikes to the rack and the rack to your vehicle.

SuperCush Anti-Sway Cradles with Ratcheting ZipStrip Straps

SuperCush Anti-Sway Cradles

The Yakima SpareRide has premium cradles to carry and protect your bikes during transport. The anti-sway cradles limit bike movement to help prevent bike-to-bike contact. Premium TPE padding protects your bikes' frames from damage by absorbing road shock and vibration.

Ratcheting ZipStrip Staps

The cradles also include ratcheting ZipStrip straps that make loading and unloading your bikes a breeze. Simply insert the strap into the buckles on the cradle and push it down until it's snug around your bike frame. The ZipStrips can be removed quickly by pressing the release levers on the sides of each anti-sway cradle.

Folding Dual Arms

SpareRide Folding Dual Arms

The SpareRide's dual arms provide excellent stability for your bikes during transport. The quick-release TriggerFinger control lever lets you quickly fold the arms down when you're not carrying any bikes. When you're ready to load the rack up again, simply lift the arms until they lock in place with an audible click.

Easy Installation with Universal Mounting Plate

SpareRide Mounting Plate

The rack installs on your spare tire mount with a plate and shank. The mounting plate fits over the lug nuts of your spare tire mount, and the shank extends from the plate through your spare tire's pilot hole. You can position this plate at 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock, depending on your lug nut pattern.

SpareRide Locking Hand Knob

Once the plate is installed, simply replace your spare tire, slide the rack onto the exposed shank, and tighten the hand knob.

Spare Ride Extensions for Oversized Tires

The system comes with a standard shank and 2 extensions shanks so you can mount the rack on vehicles with oversize tires up to 12-1/2" wide. The shanks swap out easily with the included Allen wrench.

Rubber TireTread Spacers

Rubber TireTread Spacers

The SpareRide features a pair of rubber TireTread spacers on the back of the rack. These spacers stabilize the rack against the spare tire and help protect the rack and your bikes from vibration. These spacers also guard your spare against damage caused by the rack rubbing against the tire.

Complete Security

SpareRide Cable Lock and Locking Knob

The SpareRide includes 2 keyed-alike Same Key System lock cores - one in the cable lock and the other in the hand knob. The cable lock wraps around your bikes, through the built-in anchor point on the front of the mast, and locks to itself. The hand knob tightens the rack to your spare tire. These SKS cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima gear keyed alike.

Integrated Bottle Openers

Integrated Bottle Opener

An integrated bottle opener on the end of each arm allows you to enjoy a cold one after a long ride.

Video Transcript for Yakima SpareRide Spare Tire Mount 2 Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima SpareRide 2 bike rack, part number Y02599. The Yakima SpareRide allows you to carry 2 bikes on your spare tire mount, no need for a hitch. It secures our bikes with 3 point of contact. We have 2 straps for the top tube and 1 strap for our down tube. That's our anti-sway. I've gone ahead and removed both bikes so we can get a closer look.

It's going to fit spare tire widths ranging from 7-11/16 of an inch to 12 and a half inches wide. Our cradles and our zip strips feature super cush padding that helps reduce road vibration and protect our bikes finish. Our dual arms our going to provide excellent support for our 2 bikes. When not in use, they fold down for compact storage. This will be ideal for pulling in a close quarter parking spot or in your garage overnight. The whole bike rack is made up of a strong durable steel construction that features a weight capacity of 35 pounds per bike and has a limited lifetime warranty.

It even comes with the Yakima signature bottle openers, that way when you're done with a hard ride, you can get a cold drink. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. We won't spare any details. First thing we'll need to do is remove our spare tire. Once we have all the lugs out we can just remove the tire. It's not a bad idea if you need to, to get an extra set of hands.

Now let's place on our bracket. There's only 2 ways you can do this. If you have a tire support bracket, you will need to remove this plate here so it can simply fit through. As you can see, we don't have one. So we're just going to flip it like this and put it in place. Next we need to determine which tongue we're going to be using.

You'll need to check your tire size and then refer to your instructions on which one. We're going to be using the medium one. Then we'll grab our included tool and our bolt, we'll line up the holes, we'll start that in. Now we're over here at a tire, we'll need to remove the center cap. We're just coming around behind and pushing it out. Then we can set that cap aside for safe keeping and bring our tire back over and then line it up. We can scoot our tire on, aligning the bolts and then we can replace our lugs. Now we can grab our spare ride and put it on. If you notice on the back here, we've got these skid plates that are just going to rest up against our tire. We'll push it all the way on. When scooting it back, you may need to adjust your cradles a little bit, that way we can get it all the way on and rest it up against the plates. Then we can grab our red knob and our locking loop. We want to be sure to make sure that faces upward. We'll need to be sure and tighten it all the way down completely. Once we've got it tight, then we can lock it up. As you can see, by locking it up, it allows it to spin freely and unable to become loosened. To load up our bikes, we'll come up here to this gray lever, we'll pull up, and rotate our arms in place. Now we can undo our zip strips. We'll just press in on the 2 tabs on either side and just pull them out. Now when loading up your bikes, it's recommended that you put the heaviest bike on first. We're just going to work our way over the dual arms. We'll need to make sure that our down tube is nice and snug up against this cradle here. This is going to be our anti-sway cradle. It's going to help reduce a lot of the sway in the bike while we're on the road as well as bike-to-bike contact and bike-to-vehicle contact. We'll just take our zip strips, press firmly on the top, and then we've got it. Now I've gone ahead and loaded up the second bike. Some bikes, such as women's, children's, and bikes with alternative 00:04:09 frame styles may require the need for a bike adapter bar to sit evenly on the cradles. The Yakima makes one and that's part number Y02531. Last thing left to do is to take our included cable lock and run it through our bikes. We'll first run it through our loop on our mask and then over our frames, put in place like that and we'll grab our keys and lock it up. This is the same key that is used to lock up your knob. It comes with 2. With everything secured and locked up, let's go ahead and take it on our test course and see how it performs. Let's go into our inaudible 00:04:48. This is going to show a side-to-side action, such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our alternating speed bumps, this is going to show a twisting action, such as going over pot holes or uneven pavement. Finally, under our solid speed ups, this is going to show an up and down action, such as pulling in and out of a driveway, or out of a parking lot. That's going to complete our look at the Yakima SpareRide 2 bike rack, part number Y02599.

Easy to put on my 2004 Honda CR-V. I’m 57 yr old woman and did it myself. Very stable. I also bought the adapter bar for my women’s bike. Love it! 541773

The mountable bike rack works well. Sometimes getting the hold down straps in place is tricky, but overall this is quite a good rack. 356029

The plastic pieces have broken off, it was way to weak to support my actual bike. I have to tie down my bike with rods. 415581

2012 Jeep Wrangler

1 year of use and I am extremely pleased with the Bike Rack. Installed easy, fits well, holds bikes very securely, easy and quick to put bikes on and off with the U shaped straps that click into place like a snowboard binding. Mounting lock and cable lock work great. I do use an extra bungee cord wrapped around bike frames and hooked onto bike rack to even minimize swinging of bikes more. Both men's frame bikes and women's frames with the add-on cross bar work well. Bikes clear Jeep body when swung open. Only issue was with the 2012 Jeep Wrangler 2 door. The metal arm that controls swinging open of rear door failed twice. It was due to the weight of the rack plus bikes overpowering the cheap little pins at the end of the control bar. Added my own strap from a boat trailer winch strap to limit door swing travel from going too far and breaking the arm again. See picture of strap and metal arm. Overall a great bike rack. -Fred O. 651822

Solid product! Money well spent for a 2007 FJ Cruiser! Although for the future purchaser, I would recommend a small bungie cord to prevent the front wheel from swaying. This is a personal preference though. You should see one pictured in the photos I've attached. Installation took maybe 20 minutes, maybe longer because the wife needed help with something in the back yard. The hardest part of the installation was choosing what extension I needed to use. I used the middle of the three available. If you have a spare tire cover and needed to never remove it, be prepared to get dirty. Amazing what can get up in there. As for etrailer.com. I ordered this on a Wednesday morning and received Friday afternoon. Communications were great with emails for order status, order shipment, order transit, and order delivery. Will be a return customer. Thank you etrailer! 221052

Absolutely Love It !!! I liked it from when I saw it on the website. I paid for the 3 day shipping and it arrived on time. 15 minutes later that baby was on the Jeep Wrangler and ready to rock n roll ! I have 30.50 x 15 tires and required the middle size extension piece. Excellent product! My only advice is Keep the key in the vehicle, don't leave the key w the bike in your garage should you have a flat tire on your Jeep. 219607

This bike carrier is great! It is very well made and is secured to the vehicle with a keyed lock. It comes with a locking cable for the bike as well. I can open the tailgate and access the trailer hitch while the bike is on the carrier. I could not be more pleased! 449766

Great rack and pretty easy installation. Secures bikes really well. Very easy to use once you find the ideal configuration for bikes. The directions could definitely use some clarification. A WORD OF ADVICE TO 2007-12 JEEP WRANGLER OWNERS: Based on the stock tire size on the Jeep (P255) the instructions will tell you to use the medium-sized tongue. If you do this, the rack WILL NOT tighten down all the way and will jiggle and rotate on the spare. Use the short tongue that comes pre-installed on the rack system. I had the rack assembled according to the instructions and it was way loose. Had to take it all apart and put back on the short tongue. Other than that setback, assembly was a breeze. 53894

Great bike rack. I had tried several for my Rav4, but none were quite right. This rack is solid, fits nicely on my spare tire. I am now able to access my trunk with my bike rack in place! Relatively easy installation, though had some trouble unscrewing one piece. 437723

The bike rack is great! I mounted it on a 2015 Jeep Wrangler which had the stock Bridgestone tires on it. It was very easy to install. One bike works great. Two bikes are a little more of a challenge to mount but they do fit (both mountain bikes and road bikes). I used etrailer.com product information and installation videos before I purchased the bike rack. I would highly recommend anyone considering buying this rack to do the same. The videos and the tips they provided were very helpful and saved me a lot of time and hassle. Ordering was easy. Shipping was fast. It was a great experience! I highly recommend the product and etrailer!! 241699

The rack is a quality piece of equipment and I'm very impressed with it's workmanship. I installed it on my 2006 Honda CR-V and it went on without any problems. The entire installation may have taken 15 minutes. Two bikes fit very tightly. Also, I ordered the rack on a Monday and it was delivered on Thursday. It went UPS ground (no shipping charge). I recommend it to anyone with a CR-V! 9916

After a couple of weeks of researching which type of bike rack I wanted for my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK (hitch mount or spare tire), I decided on the spare tire mount. And after a 4hr (roundtrip) mountain biking weekend escape, I'm very happy with my decision. What I like about the rack: well built, very sturdy with bike(s) mounted (no sway or rattle), arms fold down and lock in place when not in use (looks slick), full access to cargo area without needing to remove rack, rack and bike cable locks included, economical, lifetime warranty and of course the dual bottle openers ; ) What I would improve upon or revise in a future model: arms should be longer (even just an inch because bikes rub slightly so I had to add padding), more use of aluminum rather than plastic (thinking long term durability of the plastic locking teeth and arms) Thanks eTrailer 95707

The product is excellent. Fit my car easily and it has never come loose. I did add Blue Locktite to the threads(just a dot - not too much) and have taken it on and off just twice in the year. The other modification I made was to spread the bike mounts a little further apart on the rails. This meant I had to use a screwdriver to remove a single screw on each and drill new pilot holes about an inch out from the factory ones. This had made it much easier to mount two mountain bikes although I wish I had another 2 inches. Very pleased overall as I don't mind modifying gear a little to meet my needs. Other note - Car Washes such as Mikes won't let you through with this rack. I just go elsewhere. 674995

Perfect ordering process, carrier arrived exactly when projected. My installation was flawless after watching several videos for the product. I had no surprises and everything fit as expected. Our bicycles will mount better on the carrier once I receive tubetop crossbar adapters that will allow the bikes to remain level on the carrier. I just ordered those. I can't ask for any better service/support from etrailer.com You folks rock!! 503735

I have no quarrels with the product whatsoever. It is built to withstand The Bomb. My bike rides very steady and seems to withstand all road experiences. Because of the way my bike is built, I had to buy a cross-piece to make it sit level. This piece is VERY heavy and it is all I can do to lift the bike onto the rack. (I am tiny and old.) If I had to do it over again, I would continue putting the bike in the back of my RAV4 because the frequency of use doesn't warrant my expense. 369050

Received product today. Searched for several options that not only looked good but worked well on my 2016 Wrangler Unlimited. etrailer had the best price. After ordering I received a call that it may be delayed. Apparently it was not delayed, and it was shipped immediately. I received in less than a week. As far as the product, on vehicle with stock tires on the Sahara I used the mid sized bracket. Excellent fit. The mounting was also simple, removed the spare and attached (I did not see references for a 3 lug mount only 5 and 6. There is a auxiliary plate that came preinstalled for the 3 lug configuration. Honestly I didn't read the entire manual, it was pretty simple , it may have been mentioned). Very strong tight mount. Had two mountain bikes on it. No wobble. Very impressed with product and even more impressed with etrailer. Thanks. 251617

2010 Jeep Wrangler

My first time ordering from etrialer an I'm going all the other reviewers in saying they were fantastic to deal with and extremely fast with the shipping. Put the rack on a 2010 Jeep Wrangler in about 30 minutes. It took longer to get the spare on and off than it did to install the rack. Pleased with the purchase so far. 191417

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Spare Tire Bike Racks

Do you have a question about this Spare Tire Bike Rack?

  • Pulling Out a Yakima Lock Core to Get the Key Number Printed on the Side to Get Replacement Keys
  • The lock number is printed on the side of the lock cylinder on Yakima locks. As long as the rack is unlocked you can use the control key # Y8007835 to remove the lock to see the number. With that number we can get you the right replacement key. If the rack is locked then you can see if a locksmith can unlock it. Otherwise the lock will have to be drilled out.

  • Bike Cover Compatible with Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with Yakima Spare Tire Rack
  • There is not a specific cover for a Yakima spare tire bike rack like # Y02599, but there are a couple of options that would work well if you are willing to put a hole in the cover where the bike rack shank meets your rack. You can use the Horizontal Style 2 Bike Bag for Trailer Hitch Bike Racks # S82006. This will work well in all seasons and will help protect in wind, rain, and other conditions. It has straps to secure and fit your bikes well to mitigate any issues and is compatible...

  • Spare-Tire-Mounted Bike Carriers for 2007 Toyota RAV4 Sport
  • We have lots of options for a spare-tire-mount bike carrier for your 2007 Toyota RAV4 Sport that you can see on the linked page. Among these is the Yakima SpareRide 2 Bike Rack # Y02599, which is a confirmed fit. The SpareRide includes locks for both the rack itself and for your two loaded bikes and it features premium-grade SuperCush anti-sway cradles to gently support your bikes. The SpareRide fits tire widths from 7-11/16 to 12-1/2-inches, but does not fit with spare-tire-mounted...

  • Why Cant a Spare Tire Bike Rack Be Used on 5th Wheel
  • Because the suspension of a fifth wheel is stiffer than a passenger vehicle, and because the rear overhang (distance between rear axle and rear bumper) is longer than what's found on a passenger vehicle. Because of this, anything mounted on the rear of a fifth wheel will be exposed to much more bouncing and jarring than something installed on rear of a passenger vehicle. Remember how bouncy it was sitting in the back seat of the school bus? Same principle. The spare tire bike racks we...

  • Spare Tire Bike Rack Recommendation that Has Offset to Allow for Off-Center Spare Wheel
  • The Yakima Spare Tire Bike Rack part # Y02599 does not have the ability to be offset so the better option then is the Thule Spare Me part # TH963PRO which does have that ability. This is also a fit for a 2011 Toyota RAV4 like what you have as well. If you plan on carrying any womens or alternative framed bikes without horizontal top tubes you may also be interested in purchasing a Kuat Bike Frame Adapter Bar # UB01 to provide a horizontal top tube on your bikes to provide an attachment...

  • Platform Style Bike Rack for the Spare Tire on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler
  • Yes! We do have some options for platform style spare tire bike racks that will fit your 2017 Jeep Wrangler. I recommend the Saris Freedom, # SA999TB. The Freedom holds the bikes at the frame making it more versatile than most other racks.

  • Best Spare Tire Bike Rack Comparison
  • There are two main competitors for the best spare tire mounted bike rack that would fit your 2008 Toyota Rav4. The # TH963Pro and the # Y02599. I would be happy to compare the Thule Spare Me, # TH963PRO, and the Yakima SpareRide # Y02599. First, in terms of the configuration and durability of the mounting plates and bars: these two racks are on par with one another and I cannot give an edge to either one. I have dealt with the Spare Me more than the SpareRide and I can say from...

  • Is Yakima SpareRide 2-Bike Spare-Tire-Mount Bike Rack Y02599 Compatible with Backup Camera
  • There are both factory and aftermarket backup camera systems available for the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and with many of these the presence of a spare-tire-mount bike carrier like the Yakima SpareRide # Y02599 will at least partially block the camera's usual field of view. Even if the bike rack does not affect the view too much the loaded bikes will almost surely do so to some degree. There is another way to transport bikes that may interest you. We offer a front-mount hitch...

  • 2016 Jeep Wrangler Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack Recommendation Thule SpareMe or Yakima Spareride
  • There are two main competitors for the best spare tire mounted bike rack. They are the Thule Spare Me part # TH963PRO and the Yakima SpareRide # Y02599. Either one is an excellent choice that your daughter would love. I would prefer the Thule over the Yakima as it has the ability to offset slightly for vehicles that have spares that aren't centered at the rear of the vehicle and because the straps for the frame cradles would be much easier to keep track of since the Yakimas have to come...

  • Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack for 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with 12-1/2-Inch Wide Spare Tire
  • There are optional adapters for mounting the Saris Freedom 2 spare-tire-mount bike rack # SA999TB on large tires but none of these works for your size 35x12.5x17. The Yakima SpareRide 2 Bike Rack # Y02599 will work on tires as wide as your 12-1/2-inchers. You can see the rack in use on a Wrangler Unlimited in the linked video. Another option is the Hollywood Racks SR2 2-Bike Carrier # HRSR2. Both are hanging style racks.

  • Height of a Spare Tire Bike Rack on a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
  • The Yakima SpareRide, part # Y02599 will have its hanging rack sitting above or in line with the spare tire's top. On the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, this is pretty high off the ground. Instead, I'd recommend a platform style rack like the Saris Freedom, part # SA4412B. This will sit significantly lower on the vehicle, allowing for an easier load onto the bike rack. It also includes integrated rack and bike locks for added security. I've included a video of the trailer hitch version of...

  • Spare Tire Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2014 Jeep Wrangler with Wide Tires
  • Hollywood offers a cost-effective 2-bike carrier, part # HRSR1 , that mounts around the outside of the spare tire, rather than by using the tire lugs, so you do not have to remove the spare tire to install the rack. This carrier also has dual folding arms, fits tires up to 12-inches wide, holds up to 75 lbs and is made of black powder-coated steel tubing. Another rack to consider is a Yakima SpareRide 2 Bike Carrier - Spare Tire Mount part # Y02599. The Yakima includes two extensions,...

  • Fit of Yakima Spare Ride # Y02599 on 2001 Honda CR-V
  • According to our friends at Yakima, the SpareTime # Y02599 will indeed fit your 2001 CR-V. The SpareTime includes a cable lock, and is designed so that the head that the bikes attach to can be offset to the rear of the vehicle, which will center the bikes on the back of the CR-V. For womens bikes or bikes with sharply angled top tubes or step-through frames, using a frame adapter like part # Y02531 is recommended. • Spare Tire Bike Rack Recommendation for Jeep with Oversize Spare
  • For an oversize rear spare you will need the Yakima Spare Ride part # Y02599 as the Thule Spare Me # TH963PRO can only work with tires up to 10 inches wide and 32 in diameter. The Yakima can fit on tires that are up to 12.5 inches in width. The adapter you referenced for the Thule is just a replacement for what the rack comes with since it comes with a shorter and longer standoff. The Bestop Tire Carrier part # B6196101 would not work with either spare tire rack though since it...

  • Recommended Bike Rack for Jeep with 35 Inch Tires
  • In order to determine the correct bike rack for your Jeep, you'll need to measure to find out how much clearance you'll need. Starting at the hitch pin hole, measure rearward until you clear the rear edge of the spare tire (I've linked you to an FAQ article that shows how this is done.) You'd then choose a bike rack whose shank length (distance from hitch pin hole to closest portion of the rack) is longer than the measurement you took. For instance, if the measurement you took is less...

  • RV-Rated Bike Rack Recommendations for Winnebago Minnie RV
  • Bikes racks meant for use on the back of a trailer or RV are built extra-strong to handle the increased vertical and horizontal motion found at the back of such vehicles. Standard spare-tire-mount bike racks meant for cars, like the excellent Yakima SpareRide 2 Bike Rack # Y02599, can't be used on an RV or trailer but we do have plenty of RV-rated bike carriers that you can choose from by clicking on the linked page. Based on my review of photos of the Minnie Winnie 22R it appears the...

  • Can Yakima SpareRide Spare Tire Mounted Bike Rack # Y02599 Be Used With Spare Tire Removed
  • The Yakima SpareRide part # Y02599 actually depends on the spare tire being in place to provide some support. If the spare tire was not in place, the downward force that the bikes exert could cause the mounting stem to bend. I would not recommend using the rack without the spare tire being in place. I have confirmed this with Yakima.

  • Will Adapter Bar Be Needed to Transport Electra Townie Step-Through Bike on Yakima SpareRide
  • Yes, the Yakima SpareRide 2 Bike Rack # Y02599 will work well to carry your Electra Townie step-through-frame bike if you use an adapter bar. Although this rack is designed with closely-spaced arms that reduce the needs for adapter bars with some bikes, step-through frames typically do still need one, such as the high-value # UB01 from Kuat. All such adapters are shown on the linked page. I suggest selecting the shortest one that will fit your bike as this tends to improve its rigidity...

Between the 2, my favorite is the Yakima SpareRide. The arms on the SpareRide rack are closer together than those on the Thule Spare Me, allowing for easier loading of your bikes. The Yakima SpareRide 2 Bike Carrier, # Y02599, also might work if you take two measurements to be sure. The biggest difference between the two and is only an advantage for some people is that the Yakima can fit on spare tires that are up to 12.5 inches wide whereas the Thule can only fit tires that are up to 10 inches wide. • The Yakima SpareTime 2 Bike Rack, part # Y02599 would be an excellent choice for your 2003 Honda CR-V. I have confirmed the fit on your vehicle with Yakima. The SpareTime can be installed so that it is offset to the spare tire so that the bikes are carried centered on the rear of the vehicle, and not hanging off to the side. • Recommended Bike Rack Carrier for Jeep Wrangler JK

While each rack has anti-sway cradles, the SpareRide also has TPE padding which will absorb some of the vibration the bikes will encounter when being transported.
