Video Transcript for Curt RV Hitch C13702 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt adjustable width trailer hitch for RVs. This universal hitch is designed for use on RVs and motor homes. It's going to come with everything that you see laid out here on the table. It's also going to come with some detailed installation instructions to help walk you through that whole process step by step. The unique design of this hitch that makes it a universal design is really these slide along frame brackets. These heavy duty side brackets are going to allow for maximum adjustability.

They slide over the ins of the hitch and then you can slide these to wherever you need for your application. This particular hitch is designed to fit frame widths from 18 inches to 51 inches wide. It's going to work on box frames, C-channel frame, or I-beam frame. It's going to let you position the two mounts inward or toward the front or the rear. That's going to allow you to put the hitch body in the best location for clearance for your particular application. Now installation hardware is all laid out here on the table that is included for bolt on installation.

If you are doing a bolt on installation, drilling is required. You'll need to drill into the tubing of the hitch to get these attached to it. Once you have your location set, then you'll need to drill into the frame of your RV or motor home to get these brackets attached to it as well. The unit can be welded on as well. If you choose to do that, but again the hardware for a bolt on installation is included. Now the hitch itself is going to feature a high gloss black powder coated finish, it's going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion.

It's going to be resistant to scratches and UV damage. It's going to feature secure all-frame attachment. It's a nice steel construction for maximum strength and safety. Your receiver opening is a two inch by two inch opening. The pin holes on this unit will accept a standard 5/8 inch diameter pin or hitch lock.

You're going to have your nice large safety chain connection points. One on each side of your two inch by two inch receiver tube. It's going to feature a class three rating. The maximum gross trailer weight capacity is 5,000 pounds or 6,000 pounds if used with weight distribution. Tongue weight maximum is 500 pounds or 600 pounds if used with weight distribution. On these brackets that attach to the framing of RV and motor home, the distance between these mount holes that's going to be eight and 5/8 of an inch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the receiver opening is two and a half inches. From the cross tube to the opening is six and a quarter. From the back of the cross tube to the receiver opening is eight and 3/4 of an inch. Curt also puts a limited lifetime warranty on this unit. Now please keep in mind that this is for use with RV approved accessories only. The main hitch body tube can be trimmed so that the ends are flush with the frame brackets, 51 inches end to end all the way down to 18 inches. If you have your frame brackets located right here, you're going to have a lot of excess. That can be trimmed off for a nice clean installation overall finish. Now if you do that, you will want to coat the bare metal with paint to protect against rust and corrosion. If welding this hitch, all welding surfaces must be cleaned to bare metal or the weld will not be the required strength and may void the warranty. That's going to do it for today's look at the adjustable width trailer hitch for RVs.

Ask the Experts about this Curt RV and Camper Hitch
Do you have a question about this RV and Camper Hitch?

  • Trailer Hitch and Motorcycle Carrier for the Back of a Travel Trailer
  • Curt RV frame mount hitch # 13703 has a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds. So the Honda Ruckus would be fine but the Suzuki would be too heavy since you also have to factor in the weight of a carrier. With this hitch Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or cargo carrier) per their warranty requirements. For a hitch with a higher capacity that does not require the strap I recommend # C13702....

  • Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier to Hold Honda EU3000is Generator on Back of Jayco Travel Trailer
  • Since generators are so heavy I do not recommend mounting it on the rear bumper of your Jayco travel trailer. What I recommend is to install a frame mounted hitch at the back of the trailer which will be a stronger and safer connection point. We have several hitches that could work and I have provided a link to them for you. If the frame spacing is 18 to 51 inches then I recommend hitch # C13702. If the frame spacing is 47 to 77 inches I recommend # UF35-946403. Both hitches have a tongue...

  • Hitch & Bike Rack Recommendations for 2017 Forest River Flagstaff MAC206 LTD Pop-up Camper
  • A hitch bike rack made for use on a standard passenger vehicle cannot be used on the back of a trailer. The reason is that the further away from the rear axle a hitch is located the more stresses, both vertical and horizontal, will be placed on anything installed in that hitch. It is a matter of leverage, like when you slip a cheater bar over the end of a lug wrench. A standard hitch rack would be likely to suffer damage if used on the back of a pop-up, not to mention what this could do...

  • Trailer Hitch and Hitch Scooter Carrier for Class A RV and Honda Helix Scooter
  • We offer several 2-inch trailer hitches that are suitable for installation on the frame of an RV. All can be seen on the linked page. For transporting your Honda Helix you will want the highest-rated RV hitch we have available, either Curt # C13702 or the similar # C13701. Both offer the same 500-lb tongue weight (TW) capacity but hitch # C13701 has 2-inches of drop in the receiver tube. If ground clearance is not a concern use either one, but if it is a concern then use the hitch without...

  • Recommended RV Hitch and Hitch Dirt Bike Carrier
  • Your best option for an RV hitch will be a frame-mount type since these offer higher capacity than the bumper-mount variety. All frame-mount RV hitches we offer are shown on the linked page. You will want to use the highest-capacity hitch that will fit your RV's frame width. A good choice is Curt's adjustable width hitch # C13702 which offers a 500-lb tongue weight (TW) rating. This capacity means that the combined weight of your dirt bike and its carrier must remain within the hitch's...

  • Recommended Motorcycle/Scooter Carrier With Hitch Receiver For Motorhome
  • You do not need a bumper to add a hitch and carrier for your scooter. I recommend the Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs, 18" to 51" Wide # C13702 or the # UF35-946403 which adjusts from 47-1/8 to 77 inches. Either of these hitch receivers will mount to your motorhome frame so a bumper is not needed. This can be used with the MaxxTow MaxxHaul Aluminum Motorcycle Carrier for 2" Hitches - 400 lbs # MT70101 for your scooter. I recommend the Motorcycle and Mobility Soft Loops...

  • Trailer hitch to Carry Generator on the Back of an RV or Trailer
  • The Curt multi-fit RV trailer hitch # 13703 has a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds. As long as the combined weight of the generated and the cargo carrier used to hold it does not exceed 350 pounds then it will work. Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or car go carrier) per their warranty requirements. Another option is trailer hitch # C13702 with a 500 pound tongue weight capacity. It will...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendations for a 16 Foot Airstream Bambi Sport Travel Trailer
  • I am not sure what the problem is at the front of the frame of your Airstream trailer. Especially since at the front the generators would be supported in more than one spot. At the back the frame would have to support the hitch and a carrier with the generators in the carrier. Now at the front it does increase the tongue weight of the trailer and that would make it possibly too heavy for the trailer hitch on the tow vehicle or for the tow vehicle itself. For a hitch I recommend something...

These will require drilling into the frame for bolt-on installation. You can see all such hitches on the linked page. It will be necessary to check along the vehicle frame to determine if there is enough space for the hitch mounting flanges. All of these options can be welded on and several also offer bolt-on installation...

  • Trailer Hitch for Use on the Back of a Pop-Up Camper
  • According to Ultra-Fab, trailer hitch # UF35-946403 measures approximately 7-1/2 inches from the L-shaped mounting brackets to the face of the receiver. The receiver is welded to the bottom of the cross tube which is 2 inch hollow steel for the adjustment of the inner arms. So from the bottom of the receiver to the top of the cross tube is approximately 5 inches. It sounds like this hitch will potentially interfere with the lift mechanism you have mentioned. If the bumper on your trailer is 4-1/2 x 4 inches then you can use # UF35-946401 but with these you have to be careful not to exceed the capacity of the bumper (if it is rated for weight carrying). Curt hitches # C13702 and # C13701 are adjustable and will fit RV frames from 18 inches to 51 inches wide. You'll need to measure to make sure they will fit your RV's frame. • I spoke with our contact at Curt and he informed me that for the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs, part # C13702, it is not recommended to mount this onto your RV's I-Beam. The reason for this is that when mounting a trailer hitch onto an I-Beam, you will need both vertical and horizontal mounting holes. The Curt # C13702 uses only vertical mounting holes. If you have clear access to the frame with the tray removed and it fits the mentioned dimensions the hitch would work well for you.
