I purchased two of these Swagman Locking Knobs to replace the two knobs (without locks) that came with my Swagman Original Bike Carrier. The price for what it is supposed to do seems fair. However, after just two uses the locking mechanism became problematic. Inserting the key(s) to engage the knob for unscrewing fails 90% of the time; on both knobs.
While on our last vacation, I was "finally" was able to free our bikes from the rack by inserting the key and holding it firmly in place while loosening the knob.
I'm an average size male who used reasonable pressure when securing the knobs, so I'm fairly sure it just needs to be engineered a bit better. Although less secure, I'm back to using the original knobs. Hopefully, this review will help those who may encountered the issue I'm experiencing.

Thank you for your review. Have you tried lubricating the lock cores? Also, I have noticed that if the screws below the lock core are over-torqued, it can be difficult to turn.

I knew the product would be good so this review is about the company etrailer.

YAY FOR Etrailer!! Real people with a sense of humor, friendly that can get the product out the door and in my hands lickity split!! I wasn't sure how or where I was going to get these parts that someone had stolen (karma whoa to whomever). I called Swagman and they referred me to etrailer. Excellent!!

Thanks to all of you at etrailer.

Oops, the weld at the mounting brace rusted through and broke off. I see Swagman doesnt make this model anymore.

While this is typically used to add a locking know to the Swagman Original and XP Series bicycle carriers 2009 and newer I see that you have found a another use for it.

by:

I bought these on replace lost originals because they were cheaper than the non-locking knobs. I have had an immediate problem with them. When screwed on unlocked they would automatically lock themselves when unscrewing. It took 15 - 20 minutes to get it off again. It seems the resistance to unscrewing rotates the locking mechanism and I had to make many attempts at forcibly holding the key in the unlock position while rotating the knob before they would unscrew. I cleaned the light rust off of the threaded post and greased. Seems to work better now. But it looks lIke this will require regular matainence to keep them function properly.

Sometimes in manufacturing the 3 screws under the knob have been torqued down to much, which leads to the issue that you are talking about. All you have to do is loosen off the 3 screws and the issue should be resolved.

Still attached to my car and going strong! Great products and service!

Ordered 3 locking knobs for my swagman bike rack and they work perfectly! Order arrived quickly and was packaged carefully. I really appreciated the email from Carol at etrailer, notifying me that my items had been delivered and asking if I had any questions. Not only are the products great, but, the customer service at etrailer is exceptional.

As far as I Know it is still working fine. I actually inherited the bike rack and had the same style but for 4 bikes. I knew a friend who needed a rack so I fixed the 3 bike rack, the one that received the new lock and gave it to my friend. They love it and have used it several times.

by:

Purchased these locks to go with the Swagman 3 bike rack and Roadmaster dual hitch receiver adaptor. These items are excellent quality and work perfectly while traveling with my motor home. I am able able to pull my Jeep and carry my bicycles together with extreme ease. These products make life on the road and camping so much easier.

by:

Worked perfectly on the original 2 ball mount #64095 from Swagman. I had no issues with the keys working and properly locking the knob in place. Was really happy with the service and shipping provided at etrailer.com.

Thanks!

by:

Bought the big Swagman bike carrier at a second hand store and the locking knob had no key. Etrailer pulled through and had a replacement that fit perfectly. When the new knob arrived, it miraculously was keyed the same as the old one! Either they’re all made with the same key or I got lucky. But now I’ve got two functional locking knobs with keys. Thanks to whomever packed my order.

by:

Thank you so much. After losing the key to my Swagman bike rack, I found out that I can buy accessories from etrailer.com. I'm so thankful for that. The product is the correct one.

by:

Works as advertised.
Using this on
a Swagman 4 bike rack. Had to buy 3 extra as the rack only comes with one locking knob.
In hindsight, I should have ordered over the phone, as then I could have asked to have the same key code ordered that's the same as what came with the bike rack, because now I have two different keys for the locking knobs. But overall a great product.

by:

Recently order two locking knobs for a Swagman Original bike rack (using it on a travel trailer). They are both keyed the same which works out perfect. One less key to carry. I will still be using an additional lock on the 5/8 inch securing hole provided. Arrived 2 days early! Thank you etrailer!

by:

Excellent product and excellent service. This product allows you to lock your bikes safely on your bike rack. All you need is one lock to keep as many as 4 bikes secure.

by:

Swagman makes excellent products and this is my second bike rack. I bought it for a compact car that has a class 1 hitch and it fits well. I also needed some replacement parts for my older XP model and they are great too.

by:

I was really pleased with how quickly we got our replacement lock. Much appreciated! Works great and we're happy to be able to have peace of mind about leaving our bikes on the rack when we are out and about.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for after losing one of the standard knobs. Now I'm able to lock the new knob and not have to worry about my bike when it's on the rack not in my sight. Great deal and super fast shipping.

by:

I was very pleased with the service provided by etrailer. Shipment was delayed because the products were not in stock and the company let me know immediately. The products arrived in a timely manner and they're perfect.
I'd definitely order from etrailer again. Service is important to me and their service is excellent.

by:

I meant to call in but forgot to do so. I purchased 2 replacement knobs, one locking and one that is not. I was very disappointed in the locking knob as it did not work after maybe 3 times it was used. The locking mechanism was loose and it just spins - it is not usable.

by:

One of the bolts & cap on my hitch fell out. I thought this could take its place and provide security. It didn't work.

Which bike rack do you have? This replacement knob is for Swagman Original and XP Series bike carriers 2009 and newer. If you have a different rack, it might not work.

by:

Great product and it works as required. Leaving for a few months and needed to secure two expensive bikes.

The service was great on line and the delivery was as promised. This was my first order from etrailer.com but won't be my last. Great to do business with a company who finally does what they say they will do.

  • I Cannot Get My Swagman Lock # P1040 To Unlock
I contacted our representative at Swagman about the Swagman Locking Knob, part # P1040. The representative at Swagman informed that to unlock the lock, you must turn the key 180 degrees. When you are turning the key the other direction and it just spins, this indicates that the lock is still locked.

  • Removing Swagman Locking Knob Part # P1040 Without My Original Key
I called our representative at Swagman and the best way to remove your locking knob # P1040, without your key, is to use a pair of needle nose plyers. On the backside of the locking knob attach the plyers around the threaded portion and twist it until it releases. Swagman does not offer replacement keys for their bike racks as stand-alone items, so your best option would be replace your locking knob, once your current one is removed. I have included a picture to the right to show you...

  • Difficulty Turning Key in Swagman Replacement Locking Knob
We have not had any customer feedback with regards to the type of difficulty you're having locking and unlocking the Swagman Locking Knob # P1040, so it may indeed be in need of a replacement. With that being said the key may just need to be inserted a bit more to engage with the mechanism. Try sliding the key in like normal and then give it one more push, wiggling it a bit as you do so, to see if this does the trick. If this doesn't help at all then I do recommend replacing it with a...

  • Troubleshooting Locking Knob of Swagman Bike Rack Where Core Comes Out
If the lock core wants to come out of the knob then that would indicate that the knob is broken on your Swagman bike rack or that the screw on the back side of the knob has comes loose. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13530 is a 2 inch receiver opening and based on your photo the Rack Attack bike carrier is a really old style that is no longer made and we don't carry any adaptors for. My recommendation is to use a similar style carrier like the Swagman Original - 3 Bike Rack for 2" Trailer Hitches # S64152-2. There are also locking knobs # P1040 and hitch pin lock and anti-rattle # S64027 which I recommend.

I honestly don't know why there is the slight number difference but I can say that if you have the Swagman Original or XP Series bicycle carrier and it is at least a 2009 or newer the Replacement Locking Knob # P1040 will fit. This has been confirmed with Swagman and since we unfortunately don't have any replacement keys, replacing your locking knobs is your best bet.
