Video Transcript for Thule Bike Racks Replacement 2 inch Hitch Adapter Review

Dustin: Hey everyone. Dustin here at etrailer.com.Today, we'll be taking a look at some replacement parts for Thule bike racks. I got a specific problem here today, and I want to show you on my Thule Hitching Post Pro. Now, rather than replace an entire bike rack just for some missing parts, check out our inventory of replacement parts here at etrailer. Today we're taking a look at the shank adapter. Now this is my Hitching Post Pro, but it's also going to work with your Doubletrack, your Vortex and other similar Thule bike racks. The problem I have is that because this is adaptable between inch-and-a-quarter and two-inch hitches, sometimes I take the adapter sleeve off to switch between vehicles and I've actually lost the adapter sleeve.

Not a problem. We sell a replacement part here at eachtrailer.com.What you'll want to do is you'll want to go and pick up the sleeve itself. And if you are missing the screw, that's a separate part number. We'll put that up on the screen for you. And if you want, you can pick up the tool as well, but I'll let you in on a little secret.

It's just an Allen wrench, which you probably already have at home.So it's a direct replacement. It's going to slide right into place. All you want to do is make sure that this concave portion goes on the same side that your set screw is on. You'll want to take your set screw, more than likely you're using the new one. But if for some reason your old one was chipped or cracked or something like that, you can reuse your old one.

You'll want to get it started in there and then we'll just tighten it the rest of the way down. Don't go crazy tight. Just get it nice and snug to where it's flush. You're not going to have any problems inserting this into your hitch. You're basically back to normal.

Just go ahead and get your bike rack installed like you normally would. We do have replacement anti-rattle bolt here at etrailer.com too, if that turns up missing. So just like that, I'm able to load my bike up again. And I saved myself several hundred dollars just by swapping out parts for my Thule replacement part here from etrailer.com.

Exactly what my 1 1/4” hitch needed. etrailer always has the stuff!

by:

This was exactly what we needed to attach our bike rack to the new car, friendly service and they knew just what we needed!

by:

Snug, secure fit into trailer hitch. This definitely fits the Thule model 934XTR 4 bike carrier I purchased around 2012. Not easy to verify that these parts fit older models. I've attached a picture for your reference of the carriers 1" hitch that this works with. Parts came nicely packaged and delivered in a couple of days. Would use eTrailer again!

by:

Dianna was so helpful. I have used trailer before and always satisfied. They go out of their way to find solutions, when other companies cut you loose!

by:

Shipped on time and in tact.

by:

Craftsmanship is great! Its what i needed to replace a plastic adapter hard solid aluminum and fits great on my sport rack bike rack.

by:

Replaced my late 90's Jeep Cherokee Sport with a new Toyota 4Runner. The Toyota has a 2" receiver, so I needed a solution for my older Thule Hitching Post Pro 4-bike rack. Before installing I wondered whether there would be some jiggling as I drove along. But once I ratcheted down the threaded bolt it proved to be rock solid. I think this adapter, the bolt and shipping were < $20 or so. Way cheaper than buying a whole new bike rack. I'm good to go! If only the weather would warm up, I'd take out the bikes.

That hitch adapter worked great last summer with my new 4Runner. I biked more miles than any summer in the last 20 years. I was worried Id have to buy a whole new bike rack for my new car. I liked my old Thule unit, since it was all-metal and still in great shape. That product saved me money and enabled me to see 100 miles of trails along a scenic watershed that passes near my home.

by:

Does what it's supposed to.
Direct OEM
replacement.
Easy to order, plenty of shipping options & showed up exactly when etrailer said it would.

User Tip: if you're using this to secure the 2" hitch adapter on a 1.25" stinger, add a drop of loctite to the screw before installing

1 year later, still working as it should, no noticeably excessive wear or deterioration.

by:

This is the exact piece I was looking for! Having misplaced both my original adapter and the instructions, the customer service department at etrailer did a fantastic job helping be determine which rack I had as well as assuring me that I would receive it by today to test it tonight and be ready for use tomorrow.

One year in and product is still working incredibly well. Going from a strapped bike rack to a trailer hitch style has worked out very well. Still very appreciative of etrailers for helping me find the piece to make this possible. Great company with excellent customer service

by:

My Thule bike rack always had excessive play in the hitch receiver. I tried this replacement adapter hoping it would solve the shaking while transporting bikes down the road. Sadly, this didn't work. I would up changing my bike rack entirely to a Hollywood rack which tightens into the receiver. Not a reflection on etrailer, they provided the part quickly.

by:

Needed this adapter to adapt up from 1 1/4" to 2" shaft so that my Thule bike rack would fit the 2" reciever hitch on the RV that I had rented.

Very knowledgable sales person helped me figure out the correct adapter that I needed and was able to overnight it to me in Lake George where I was located at that time. Saved me a load of hassle and did not rush me so that we could be sure it was the right part.

I rarely give 5 stars but this person really got me out of a jam and I got exactly what I needed when I needed it!

Many many thanks.

by:

Works just fine for exactly what it is designed to do. I use it to put 1 1/4" bike racks on the 2" hitch. Helps to have the set screw on the side to hold it in place while installing it, but can be done (frustratingly) without. I have used it with several different vehicles and several different bike racks.

by:

My overall experience with etrailer has been OUTSTANDING. I ordered this Thule 2" Hitch Adapter (item 853-7489) in order for my older Thule Hitching Post Pro bike rack to fit in my Curt trailer hitch. The adapter works perfectly. I am very impressed with the strong and sturdy quality of this product. When I inserted the bike rack and tightened the bolt, the fit is very stable and without wobble. I am extremely satisfied with this product as it also saved me from having to spend a lot more money for a new bike rack.

by:

I have to say: I didn't expect this to work as well as it did. I ordered the screw recommended in the video and put it into the shank of my Thule 954 bike rack. The beauty part is that, with the screw in place, the hitch adapter goes onto the shank and stops so that the holes for the bolt in the shank and the adapter line up perfectly.

Putting the adapter into my 2" trailer hitch was easy too: it stopped at a depth that had the holes in the hitch, adapter, and shaft line up perfectly.

It was super easy to get the bolt through the holes and tighten it.

The bike rack is now very solidly held in the trailer hitch without any wobbling whatsoever.

by:

The wiring harness works perfectly and the installation video was very helpful as are all of the etrailer video’s I have viewed. I retired from a HD truck manufacturer after a rewarding 39 year career. My job involved providing part requirements for 150 custom trucks per day. This required A constant dedication to quality and communication.

I see Etrailer as a company with similar goals and is a model that other company’s should follow. Keep up the good work. It is a pleasure doing business with you.

by:

I purchased and installed this trailer hitch adapter for my bike carrier a year ago. It was easy to install and continues to work exactly as expected. When I need to remove my bike carrier, the adapter easily comes off with it and stays on the bike carrier until I need to put it back on by vehicle.

by:

Picked this up to get my 1-1/4" Thule bike rack onto my new Curt Class III 2" receiver. I picked up the appropriate flat cap screw and all went well. Needed some pro advice to solve one issue I was having with getting the rack tight into the receiver, but otherwise all good! (That tip is that you still use the original, short bolt that came with the 1-1/4" hitch rack... the bolt does not need to go all the way through the rack, the sleeve and the receiver!)

The part came in super fast! I'm very pleased with it, and the service from etrailer.

by:

Well made product, as to be expected by Thule. It does appear though that not all 2" hitch receivers are the same - so check yours! The adapter fits very loose in my hitch, I'll have to use 1mm aluminum plate to shim it all around (or 2mm shim on 2 sides).

To clarify, this is not a problem with the adapter - it is sized a fraction under 2", where my hitch adapter is way more than a fraction over 2".

by:

Note that the threaded hole to attach the adapter to the bike rack does not align correctly with the i-bolt hole on Yakima bike racks. However this product is clearly listed as a Thule adapter. I just assumed it would work for both. Regardless, I can still get it to work, just takes a little more fiddling to get everything aligned correctly. Once aligned and secured, it performs flawlessly. Customer service and shipping was quick and hassle free.

by:

Product OK, retailer is not: Additional needed item (screw, in this case) was not flagged as 'must have' extra at the "add to cart" next to item it was required for (hitch), but only noted at the very bottom of the description, next to another "add to cart". If one uses the first available 'Add to cart", need to also purchase a screw for above part is not known.

Would have been easy to correct, as discrepancy was noted (by chance, YouTube) immediately, but customer service refused to add on to original order and insisted on a separate full shipping fee (900% of the cost of item), saying the original order had "already shipped" (10 minutes ago..?) Check other one stars, this is not exceptional. (Doubt this comment will make it to the website..)

by:

Worked perfectly well.

by:

I purchased this after the rack that I purchased did not include this. Keep in mind that you also need the M6x16mm cap screw to attach this to the bike rack. With this on, I can now use it for my 2 inch hitch. Fast shipping and great customer service. Thanks etrailer!

by:

The picture for this shows signs of use, but I was happy to learn it's new. It's just like Thule's adapter and seems like it's going to work great!

I’ve used the adapter quite often and I’ve never had a problem with it. It’s up to par with Thule’s adapter and I’m very happy with it and etrailer.com

by:

Nice quality item, easy to use. Excellent price!

Because it's used on my only 1 1/4" bike rack, I used the extra hole in the adapter and drilled & tapped a 1/4" hole in my rack and permanently mounted the adapter to it. Nice feature.

by:

Used product to connect a 2” Thule bike rack to a 1-1/4” hitch. It worked well, with a little extra foam and tape around the outside of the piece to make it tighter. Product arrived quickly and met my expectation

  • Replacement Threaded Bolt for Older Thule Vertex Bike Rack
Hey John, thanks for reaching out! Replacement bike rack parts can be a bit confusing to find, but I really like delving into this stuff and I'm pretty confident you're looking for the bolt for the older Thule Vertex bike rack, which looks similar to the newer Apex XT # TH9025XT. The exact replacement adapter and bolt parts for the Vertex are listed below: - 12 x 40 mm Hitch Bolt # 908-1240-54 - M12 Washer # 951-1224-54 - M12 Lock Washer # 956122159 - 2" Hitch Adapter # 853-7489 The...

I do have a solution for you but adapter # 853-7489 does not fit the T2 TH9045. What you can use (and what is basically the same thing only it doesn't attach to the bike carrier) is a reducer sleeve, # HT02. Pin the reducer into the hitch receiver and then you can place the 1-1/4 inch shank from the T2 in and you'd be good to go.
