Video Transcript for Reese Hitch Adapters - Hitch Extender - RP45292 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Reese hitch extension and reducer for a 2 1/2 inch trailer hitch receiver. This adapter is designed for use with Titan trailer hitch receivers. The adapter bars let you modify your hitch to accommodate your application. Simply extends the length of your hitch receiver to clear obstacles like a truck bed mounted camper. This is going to reduce the size of your hitch receiver opening from a 2 1/2 inch opening to a 2 inch opening. I want you to notice down here that when I pulled it out of the box, one thing that I noticed is that it comes with a chrome plastic trim piece. Gives that a nice look.

If you don't like it you can pop that off there just to expose the steel. That's going to be black powder coated just like the rest of the unit so it's going to match the rest of the extension so if you don't like the trim piece, it just has snaps on each side that you can pop off. It's going to have the hitch cover right there so you can pull that out and you can see that it's a 2 inch by 2 inch opening. Now on this side it's going to have a welded on electrical bracket that lets you mount a connector. The 7 way wiring extension. A wiring extension is not included so if you're in need of something like that you can find them at etrailer.com.

Then look at on each side right here by the opening. You're going to have a safety chain loop so you can see that right there. Look at on each side of the extension bar. Underneath the hitch and then over here you're going to have the built-in loops that let you usually attach safety chains. It's a really nice designs.

A lot of anchor points there to make sure that you comply with safety regulations and to make sure that you're safe on the road when towing. Installation is pretty simple. All you have to do is slide this end of the receiver tube of your hitch. Line up your pin holes secured in the hitch with a hitch pin and clip or hitch lock. Those items are sold separately so if you're in need of something like that you can find them at etrailer.com. The diameter of the pin holes, all 3 are going to measure 5/8ths of an inch.

You will need a hitch pin and clip or hitch lock to get the unit secured in your hitch, and then you'll need another one to secure whatever it is that you're installing in the 2 inch by 2 inch opening. The unit is made from a nice sturdy steel construction. We're looking at corrosion resistant black powder coat finish. It's going to last a long time, keep it looking nice, and the unit's highly resistant towards rust and corrosion. This is designed for a 2 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch trailer hitch receiver, and then again the receiver opening is 2 inch by 2 inches. The extension length, this is going to have two different lengths possible. At the rear hole, so from this hole to this hole center on center, we're looking at an extension of 34 inches. From this hole to this hole we're looking at an extension of 24 inches. The weight capacity when used with the 24 inch length is going to give a maximum gross trailer weight of 6,000 pounds. That increases to 8,000 pounds when used with weight distribution. The tow weight is 600 pounds and then with weight distribution it's going to be 800 pounds. The weight capacity when used with the 34 inch length is going to offer a maximum gross trailer weight of 4,500 pounds and then it increases to 6,000 pounds with weight distribution. Maximum tow weight is 450 pounds and then with weight distribution it's going to be 600 pounds. If you want to use the 24 inch extension the adapter bar must be trimmed. There's going to be a trim line right here so you trim directly on that line to use the 24 inch extended length. To do this you'd simply use a hacksaw. Cut along the trim mark shown on the bar. That's all there is to it. If you want to use the 34 inch extension or extended length, you don't have to worry about trimming you can use it as-is right out of the box. That's going to do it for today's look at the Reese hitch extension and reducer 2 1/2 inch trailer hitch.

I received and installed this hitch extension. The service from etrailer was very prompt and I am well pleased with their service. The fit to my Ford F350 was fine and the holes lined up to my receiver. It does however, butt right up against the spare tire through the receiver with no room for error. it could use a little more spacing but I am well pleased with the quality and finish. 546204

the home made extension that came with the 11.5 ft camper was to springy I used a 2 and 1/2 ft. 2"x2" extension between my receiver and the Titan extension this gave me the support I needed to haul my 16ft. boat behind my camper. the service and shiping was fast and great. 196476

A great heavy duty extension just what I needed for the pickup when the camper is on. The service at eTrailer was great. There was a slight mix up in the billing versus shipping information. eTrailer called me got it taken care of and the product arrived with in a few days of the order. 210469

Good fit...had to trim 1.5 inch's to allow for the spare tire on the Chevy 2500 HD. Only problem is the pin hole does not line up with the holes in the hitch....so will have to use a dremel tool to trim some metal away from the existing pin hole on the extension. One other comment, I wish the raise on the ball end of the extension was 4 inchs higher.... It is low to the ground, I am concerned I will have clearance problems with some driveways at gas stations, with the welded skid plate on the extension dragging.... 191712

I bought this to extend the receiver on my F350SD 4x4 diesel SRW out to the bumper of my Alpenlite Camper. I like that it tapers to a 2x2 receiver at the trailer end, so I can use my 2x2 hitch bar to haul a light kayak trailer. It looks to be heavily constructed and should meet my needs since the largest trailer I will haul is a 5400#(fully loaded) Lance 1685 Travel trailer with a tongue weight of 500 pounds. I use an adjustable WD hitch with a only enough tension to level the trailer and smooth the ride. "The extension did not fit a new Curt 2 1/2" receiver, both fresh out of the box. This is contrary to this comment "Yes, the Curt trailer hitch # C15809 will fit your 2011 Dodge Ram 3500. As far as the Titan extension, # RP45018 or # RP45292, I have tested these extensions in a Curt hitch with the 2-1/2 inch receiver and found that it will fit. I have included a link to the installation instructions for the trailer hitch." The problem appears to be with the extension, not the Curt hitch, because a 2 1/2 to 2" reducer fits the Curt hitch in a typical fashion, easily inserted. I was able to fit it to the hitch by grinding off the paint and easing the corners a little. 410295

I needed this hitch extension due to my truck camper overhang. We are hauling a u-haul cargo trailer. It shipped the same day I ordered it and arrived in perfect condition. I had to shorten the length to 24" and used Etrailer suggestions on how to cut the pipe. Thank you Etrailer. 567902

Fits fine now, but had some installation issues on my 2009 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. Out of the box at full extension it fit my truck fine. Once I cut it down to the 24" length at the factory marking it was too long and interfered with the spare tire. I cut an additional 1/2" and it went in with clearance for the tire. Then I found the hole for the hitch pin was crooked. Too high on one side and low on the other. Half an hour with a Dremel and all was OK. The bracket for the wiring is excellent. I haven't towed with it yet but it appears solid and I expect it will do the job. 184607

I'm very happy with the hitch extension bar, the product arrived on time in excellent condition and there were no complications with the seller. I did decide to add support chains at 45 degrees going back to the hitch because I was uncomfortable with the lateral movement. That decision added about $50 to my final installation cost but now I am very comfortable with the set up. 85370

Part came double boxed and was shipped on the day I order it. I have a 2011 Chev 3500 HD, crew cab, short box and I had to cut off 1 1/2 inches from the back of the hitch, because it hit my spare tire. Might be a Chevy thing. 38539

  • How To Tow with the Tailgate Down on a 2018 Ram 2500
I do have options for you but the traditional hitch extenders like the Hitch Box Extension and Reducer part # RP45292 that you are looking at will reduce your towing capacity too much to be used with your trailer most likely. Therefore, the best option I have is a weight distribution system with an extended shank, the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank part # EQ90-02-4600 and the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37121ET. Aside from having a much better price the Curt will function the exact same as the Reese for all intents and purposes.

This extension requires your truck to be equipped with a 2-1/2 inch hitch receiver and is designed to extend the receiver opening 24 or 34 inches away from the truck. This is a great question that there isn't exactly a great answer for. This means you will need a hitch with a 2-1/2 inch opening and a weight distribution system designed for a 2 inch opening. Without knowing what vehicle you have I cannot recommend a hitch, but I did attach a page that has all...

  • Best Hitch Extender Option Recommendation for 7,000 lb Trailer for 2-1/2 inch Hitch
Best solution we have would be to cut down a longer 2-1/2 inch hitch extender part # RP45292 to 24 inches and hopefully the extra length won't be an issue. We don't have a way to get you exactly 16 inches unfortunately. With weight distribution at 24 inches of length this extender has a capacity of 8,000 lbs which would be enough for you.
