Can a Trailer Hitch Extender be Used with Weight Distribution
Updated 09/05/2014 | Published 09/04/2014 >
Question:
I have a 26ft TT and tow with a Chev 2500HD and am wondering if I can safety use a hitch extension so I can have the tailgate down when I haul my UTV. I need maybe 6-7inch to safety clear the tongue jack. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Using the hitch extension will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer by 50 percent. But if you have a 2 1/2 inch trailer hitch receiver and use the Titan hitch extension # RP45292 the tongue weight capacity will not be reduced.
At the 24 inch length the extension is rated for 8000 pounds when using weight distribution. If you do not have a 2 1/2 inch trailer hitch you might be able to add one but I need to know the year of your Chevy 2500.
When using a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. So at least some of the UTV's weight will be applied to the total tongue weight.
The other option is to remove the jack you are using and replace it with a swivel jack. I have included a couple links to all the swivel jacks we carry. The swivel jack can be turn horizontal so it won't interfere with the tailgate.
