What Hitch Extension Can Be Used With A Weight Distribution Hitch?

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/01/2025

Question:

Hi, I have a 2022 F150 Powerboost 4x4 Lariat and Im looking to get a hitch extender Blue Ox Hitch Extender for Tow Bars - 2inch Hitches - 6-3/4inch or 8-3/4inch Extension and use it only at the 6-3/4 point. So I can leave my tailgate down and still pull my 2025 Rockwood 2515S travel trailer behind me. The trailer has a hitch weight of 681lbs Overall loaded at about 6100k lbs. I currently use an Anderson Weight Distribution Hitch. Will this be ok to use at the 6-3/8inch length safety? Payload on F150 Powerboost is 1455lbs.

Hey John, thanks for reaching out. The Blue Ox Hitch Extender for Tow Bars # BX88265 is designed for use with hitch mounted accessories like a bike rack, or for flat towing a vehicle. It cannot be used for towing a trailer and it especially cannot be used with a weight distribution system.

The only hitch extensions we carry that can be used with a weight distribution system are the Reese Titan hitch extenders like the part # RP45292 that require a 2-1/2 inch hitch and the Torklift extenders like part # TLE1536 that require a dual hitch made by Torklift. So you would need to swap out/upgrade your hitch in order to do what you are wanting to do.

For example, the Tokrlift Super Hitch # TL74CR will fit the 2022 Ford F-150 Lariat and will allow you to use a Torklift extender and your WD hitch.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Hey John, how did things go with upgrading your hitch setup on the F-150 so you could tow the Rockwood trailer with the tailgate down? Knowing what route you took could really help others trying to make a similar setup work safely.
