Why the Weight Carrying Rating is Higher on Longer Titan Hitch Extender # RP45018 than Short One
Updated 08/16/2012 | Published 08/15/2012 >
Question:
Your product RP45292 34inch extention is rated for 4500# vs RPP45018 41inch extention at 5000#. Why does the longer extention have a higher WC rating? I am considering buying one of these for my 2008 Chevy 3500 Silverado DRW diesel powered extended cab with 8 ft bed pickup. I carry a Lance Spirit 8000 with 10 ft extended cab camper and wish to also tow my 22 ft center console boat. So if the shorter extention will work considering weight and length why would I want to buy it when the longer extention has a higher WC rating, other than price? I guess I am just wondering why the shorter extention does not have the higher rating. What am I missing? I do not want to purchase a weight distributing hitch.

I ran this by my contact at Reese. This is a little tricky but I can explain. If you look at the pictures I have included for each Titan Hitch Box Extension (# RP45018 and # RP45292) you will notice that the distance between the 2 hitch pin holes is different by 3 inches.
On the longer extension the distance between the furthest out hole and the end of the receiver is longer which allows it to carry more weight at 41 inches. The 3 inch difference is the key factor.
