Video Transcript for Performance Tool Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper Review

Today we'll be looking at the Performance Tool four inch carbon fiber digital caliper. Part number PTW80157. This allows you to read from 0 to 4 inches or 0 to 100 millimeters. It moves in 100ths of an inch or 1/10ths of a millimeter. It has a nice LED screen. You hit the on button and it's easy to read.

You can switch between millimeters and inches. Right now it's in inches and now it's in millimeters. Just by the touch of a button. We also have our zero capability so when we move it down our measurement tool, if we want to measure something and see the difference between another measurement, we can hit the zero button and it shows us the difference. This is a negative distance or a positive distance.

Take it back to zero and hit the zero button again so we can start back from zero inches or zero millimeters. This allows us to measure the outside diameter or the inside dimensions with the other side. Now we can show you in action. On our trailer here, we pulled off our seal. Usually it's stamped with the measurements on it, but this one has worn off over time. WE can use our tool to find the inner dimension of our race.

2.18 inches. If we need to figure out the outside diameter, that'll be 3.35 inches. Other measurements that we might need to know. Come to our shaft. We've got the bearings that sit on our shaft so we might need to know the diameter of our shaft.

We can come up, be 1.24 inches and that'll be for our inner or our outside bearing. If we need to figure out our other, the larger bearing, the inside bearing, we do the same thing. 1.74 inches. Now if we need to know the difference between the two, we come up we get the inside bearing, we hit our zero button, that zeros it out, and we can come to our outside bearing and we see there's almost a half inch difference between the two bearing sizes. Same works if you want to figure out the dimensions here for our race because that's where it sits. This is where our race sits. If I want to do difference in that. I'll take our meter, I'll measure the inside diameter of our race, I'll hit the zero button, and then I can come and measure the outside distance of our race and see if there's any difference at all. Which, there's not, but if there was it would show us. There would be a negative difference or if I measure something bigger, it would show us a positive difference. That's it for a look at the Performance Tool 4 inch carbon fiber digital caliper. Part number PTW80157.Speaker 2: You can find this and everything else right here at etrailer.com What's up man.

I have not used it yet but what I want to use it for it will work just fine then I can order the right parts for my trailer weather is not good right now to use it

by:

Works as described

by:

It works great and it's just plain fun. I bought it to measure bearing buddies and spindles. It works for that but it also has been great for measuring the diameter of carbon fiber tubes I'm using to build a sailboat mast and spars.

It gives instant metric to inch conversions - just push the in/mm button and the measurement in the display converts.

I've used it at least a couple of hundred times and it's still on the original battery.

Pro tip: Close it all the way before you turn it on.

by:

I have always wanted a digital caliper now I have one. I have always relied on my older read out types since this is the one etrailer uses I will be able to take the same measurements they do . My local bearing supplier has priced themselves out of the market so I use etrailer !

A very nice useful tool. First one I got had a malfunction and the company sent me another one right away

  • How To Determine What Replacement Hubs And Bearings Are Needed For Camper
In order to replace the bearings or the hubs there are a few things we would need to know. First, you can check the bearing numbers on your camper and we can tell what you would need as a replacement. If you cannot read the numbers on your bearings you can use a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 to measure the spindle where the bearings ride and also measure the inside dimension of the hub you have and we can find a replacement for you. I have attached a drawing that shows where...

  • How to Select Replacement Grease Seals for Boat Trailers
Thank you for the grease seal part numbers you provided. I was not able to find a seal cross reference for these so to select replacements your best bet is to measure your spindle diameters and hub bores to get the required inner and outer seal diameters. Use a precision digital caliper like # PTW80157. Then use the linked page and simply click on the filters for your inner and outer seal diameters to see the options in that size. You can also click on your preference for single- or double-lip...

  • How To Determine What Is Needed To Put Electric Brakes On Trailer
I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains what is needed to add electric brakes to a trailer. You will need a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 to measure the spindle when it comes time for the bearings and seals that will work with the spindles on the trailer. Once you have determined what size brakes you need you can use the attached link to find the brakes and drums that best fit your trailer.

  • How To Determine What Bearings Are Needed For Boat Trailer
The 2.328 measurement of your Bearing Buddies is not really enough to go by when you want the bearings and other hub components. The best way to make sure you get the right components is to pull the hub and get the bearings numbers from the side of the bearings as shown in the attached photo. If you cannot find the numbers on the bearings, I recommend using a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 and measure the axle spindle where the bearings ride and then measure the inside dimension...

I've attached a diagram showing you how you can find these numbers. If the numbers aren't available you can also measure the diameter of your spindles with a digital caliper, # PTW80157. • How to Measure to Determine Correct Grease Seal
For a grease seal to fit properly it needs to have an inner diameter that matches the spindle diameter and an outer diameter that matches the hub's bore, which is where the seal installs. Please refer to the linked diagram that shows where a seal rides on the spindle, point B. Measurements for things like bearings and seals have to be very exact, and generally require a digital caliper like # PTW80157 that can give you very precise readings, ideally to the nearest thousandth. • Determining Replacement Components For Horse Trailer With Tandem Square Axles
There should be a label, sticker or metal tag on the axles or the trailer that describes the weight capacity of the axle and trailer you have. Square axle capacities are hard to determine. Unlike round axles, they do not have specific capacity based on their dimension. To find the right replacement drums and brakes you can measure the inside diameter and depth of your drums as shown in the attached photo. You will also need to know what the wheel bolt pattern is on the drum so you can...

  • Is a Small Difference in Wheel Pilot Hole and Hub on Hub Centric Axle Okay
With hub-centric hubs like those on your trailer, it is important that the center pilot hole of a wheel is the same exact size as the hub bore. The hubs will center the wheels using the hub bore and the pilot hole of the wheel, so ideally this measurement should to be identical or it could potentially cause issues. Obviously, the difference between the 2.55 inch wheel pilot hole and your 2.5 inch hub is extremely small, but this tiny variance can still cause the hub to basically be secured...
