Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

A20 Two-Piece Interlocking Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, interlocking, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

A20 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

Video Transcript for Curt Fifth Wheel - Fixed Fifth Wheel - C16140 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It uses the interlocking two-jaw system right here, which provides a nice 360-degree jaw-to-kingpin contact, and because of that it'll give you less rattle, more security than your slide bar models. Also, on the front of each jaw, over here and over here, you can notice there's two built-in grease zerk fittings, which will give you easy lubrication of the jaws. This hitch does use a fully articulating torsion head for controlled coupling and a nice stable, quiet ride. It will self-align for easy hookup, and helps suppress road shock to reduce any bothersome towing noise. The handle right here is a lockable handle.

It's a very short-throw single-handle operation. The nice thing about it, also, it does self-reset to the ready-to-couple position after uncoupling. Now, when you put this together, when you mount the crossmember to the legs, there's three rows of holes on the crossmember, so it actually will give you a four inch hitch height adjustment. The hitch height would be measured from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head, and you want that to be as close as possible, so when you're towing your fifth wheel with your tow vehicle, you want those level. It gives you three choices, anywhere from thirteen inches of hitch height adjustment up to seventeen inches. One of the nice features on this is the three-point indicator system. It'll tell you what position the jaws are in.

What's nice about it is that it's color-coded. Let me just swing this around so you can be able to see. If you notice, right under the hitch head, right here, you'll notice right now it's showing solid green. That means the jaws are completely closed. If we had a kingpin in there, the green would mean you're ready to tow.

This color coding will tell you if the hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow. What's nice about those colors and looking, if you're in the cab, the cab would be right here, you can turn around as you're hooking up or uncoupling and watch the color, and when it changes, it tells you the position of the jaws. Basically, the green, like it is now, the jaws are locked closed; it's safe to tow. If it goes to yellow, let me just unhook this and pull out the handle. You can see right now, because I opened the jaws, it's showing yellow. Yellow means the jaws are ready to couple.

It's safe to back in the truck to couple up to your fifth wheel. It if would show red there, that means the jaws are locked open, and it's safe to pull your truck away. When it's red, you do not want to couple. Also, this has a nice fast one-pin head removal, makes it very easy for one person to remove the hitch. Back here, there's a clip you can pull out, and then you can pull this large pin out, and that'll allow you to take the head out of the crossmember so you can take it apart in pieces, which makes it easy for one person to remove the hitch. Also included with this . Let me roll this around here. There we go. Included with this, I have laid out, comes with the plastic loop plate right here. This plastic loop plate will go onto your kingpin and lets the kingpin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. Also comes with, you can see, the pins and clips for attaching the legs to your base rails. This is a simple installation with base rails and an installation kit. Now, the base rails and the installation kit we do sell separately on our website. I would recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you the correct base rails and installation kit for your application. This fifth wheel hitch is compatible with B and W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above-bed base rails. This is a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish. Again, the specs on this. The gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. The vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 5,000 pounds. We had mentioned the hitch height adjustment from thirteen inches to seventeen inches. What I'm going to do now is, we already have the jaws open, ready to couple, showing yellow, so what I want to do is here's an example. This is what a kingpin would look like on your fifth wheel. When you go to hook up, your kingpin would slide in between the two jaws, just like this, and once you get it far enough, your jaws will completely wrap around the kingpin. You notice the handle automatically slides up. The holes line up, so you just take your pin and clip, drop your pin into the hole, clip it, and that'll lock the handle. Now, the hole is large enough, you could actually put a padlock on there if you wanted extra security. It does come with this attached pin and clip. With the handle locked, you look back here at the color, it's showing green. That means you're all ready to tow. Again, to uncouple, you just pull your pin out, open it back out, and go, be able to back right out. That should do it for the review on the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with the 20,000 pound weight capacity.

Fit and ease of use great. Strong hitch. 696038

The quality of the product is what I expected, Excellent. I encountered the same problems with the packing as several others have. The exterior of my box was perfect, completely in tack. The problems were with the way the product was packed inside the box. The Styrofoam was destroyed along with the 1/8 inch thick piece of paneling, which allowed the right side leg of the hitch to bounce around and end up scratching the center member of the hitch, no bigger a little touch up paint couldn't fix. But, really people a 1/8 inch piece of paneling trying to contain a 140 pound hitch, lets start with a 1/4 inch piece of plywood and go up from there. Thank you. 633958

I already had a curt goose neck frame mounted in truck so I used the Curt adopter plate # 16220 an the A 20 curt 5 wheel hitch assembly was very easy with no issues looking forward to putting it to work with my G M C 3500 also purchased a curt bumper dual ball adjustable hitch 411715

Mixed reviews. I think I picked out a great hitch (Curt A29, part # C16140. Haven't installed it yet. Turns out the mounting system for my 2006 Chevrolet 2500HD 8' long bed isn't the right one (holes don't match up to the frame, only the one in the back for the lower bolt hole). Part number 16418. Emailed information to sales & this was the part recommended for my truck... Still can't install the part... Will have to drill holes both front holes (large & small...)... Doesn't math the video of the 2005 Chevrolet 2500 HD... Appreciate the videos, better than the written instructions included. Once done, hope to give it a 5 star. Will see what is recommended... 454980

It arrived today everything went well. Great price, our cost around here is 865.00 for A20. 735553

- C16140

Very nice product.....had some initial installation parts issues that etrailer quickly resolved....I've got 18K pounds on this hitch and all is well, including a few steep grade up and downs.....trailer rides nicely in hitch with virtually no chucking....hitch height just fits under the bed cover and I can remove the hitch from the rails in two pieces by myself.... really satisfied....I'd recommend this product 719298

- C16140

The products received were exactly what I was hoping for along with the excellent videos for installation and last, but certainly not least the nice woman's help with all my questions and concerns being I had no experience or knowledge on any of it. Thanks for a great experience. 694265

Installation of though Curt A20 straightforward and extremely easy . 582112

- C16140

Noah was very helpful on the phone. My order came in on time and all nuts and bolts was with it. Made for very easy and quick install. It took longer to get my tools out than it took to install the hitch.I will be recommending etrailer.com to friends. 574865

- C16140

The hitch is great . The only problem was shipping. When the order arrived the outer box was extremely beat-up. Upon opening, the inner box was so damaged it was not reconizable...the styrofoam was in pieces and the hitch paint was scratched-up. It was treated VERY badly in shipment...I took pictures and was going to forward to you but my phone crashed and that's when I learned my cloud back-up did not include my photos. I needed the hitch immediately for a trip, so I just installed it and chalked-it up as bad luck. With all that said, I owned Reese before but the Curt just seems more substantial 544700

great hitch easy to hook up love the way the jaws wrap around the pin!!! love the fact that when you are hitched you have a green window !! Very quiet--no chucking or bucking 526024

- C16140

This hitch has done everything we've asked of it. You always know when you have a good connection and it can be easily removed by one person by pulling one pin! Great product at a great price. 521543

- C16140

Great hitch for the price. Easy to assemble in under 30 minutes. Only complaint is box came a little beat up and it was missing the safety pin that holds the main pin in place, quick trip to the hardware store and $2.10 later problem fixed. 489162

- C16140

The Curt A20 steel construction looks real good. Simple to assemble and install on my standard rails . We plan to use it to tow our 5th wheel travel trailer to our winter destinations and back. We had a competitors hitch for the last five years and it was replaced under warranty once and several parts more often. major looseness was the issue. Not willing to put up with it anymore I did some surfing and bought a Curt A20. 460150

- C16140

Hitch slid into existing rails after a very minor adjustment. Took my son and I about 25 minutes to assemble, torgue bolts and adjust rails in the bed of my truck. we have used it twice already and camper did not bang and pop like it did on old worn out receiver. The ordering process was also very smooth. Kelsey took the time to explain the differences in the hitches before I made my decision! I Would recommend both etrailer and this hitch if you are looking to change out! 434026

- C16140

I like the hitch so far, though I haven't used it yet. Easy assembly, only the 2 side plate need installed. Appears to be well made. The only problem I've encountered so far is I can't remove the upper hitch plate. I pulled the large pin that holds it to the lower assembly. I wiggle it back and forth and side to side. I feel resistance of the rubber isolator but it doesn't budge. I don't want to pry on it. Perhaps after a few uses it'll loosen. I wanted to remove it to lighten the hitch, to ease the installation. Now I have to struggle with the entire weight of the hitch. 433312

Received the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch very timely from UPS. It looks very well built. We (my husband and myself) put it together and had it installed in about a half hour (Very easy with the right tools). We are going camping this weekend. I will take a couple pictures and will let you know how it does..... 404676

- C16140

I'm happy with the performance of the hitch. The color indicator is added piece of mind that I'm doing things right. It did come with a few minor scratches from shipping and a few scratches most likely came from the factory. Like most 5th wheels they're heavy, so you won't want to carry it far without a dolly. I'm sure the poor UPS guy got a work out. The 7 blade in the box, above bed rails, and hitch were in in 3.5 hrs, but I have a hoist, which helps but not needed to get things installed. I can't express how helpful the installation videos were. 387120

- C16140

Hitch arrived on time. there are 3 small spots where the paint has been scratched. No big job to repair. I am very satisfied with the hitch. Seems to function properly. Cant wait to tow with it. I like the way the jaws are round as apposed to the slide jaws that I replaced. Easy to assemble. The folks at e-trailer were very helpful and professional. 319640

Review from a similar Curt A20 in Fifth Wheel

Very nice hitch, easy assembly. Haven’t had any problems hooking up, head has play so you don’t need to be perfect backing into hitch. Bought a ram 17 Cummins and this hitch to go with it at same time between the hitch and truck can’t tell the 12000 lbs camper is back there. Very little hitch noise. Easy and fast shipping also. The only complaint is the hitch is heavy! Make sure you have help to remove or install. 614499

  • Loose Connection Between Curt A20 Hitch and Curt Base Rails
Since you mentioned the cotter pins which are used to secure the feet inside the rails, that makes me that you are referring to the connection point between the rail and foot on one of the four corners of the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140. If that is the case then you will want to inspect the hole on the foot, the hole inside the rail, and the pin that connects these together. • Why Recommend Fixed Hitch Over Sliding Hitch for 2016 Ram 2500 Short Bed and Trailer with Sidewinder
While you can use a sliding fifth wheel hitch with a Sidewinder or Turning Point Pin Box, recommendations are made to try and provide the best solution for our customers. For someone with a short bed and a rotating turret, a fixed hitch is going to offer the best towing experience. Fixed hitches provide a better ride than sliding hitches and there is also the consideration of the hitch and what else it provides. For example, on a 2016 Ram 2500 short bed with the factory prep package,...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Ram 2500 Short Bed and Turning Point Pin Box
Like a Sidewinder, the Turning Point Pin Box has a rotating turret so the pivot point is no longer at the king pin in the hitch, it is 22 inches rearward; because of this it is strongly recommended that you use a fixed fifth wheel hitch. Using the slider would mean the trailer's weight would be pushed too far behind the axle of your truck as opposed to being over the axle or just forward of it, which can put added stress on the truck, hitch, and trailer. For a hitch I highly recommend...

If you have to adjust the pin box on your 5th wheel trailer and your Curt A20 # C16140 on your 2018 Ram 2500 then you need to make sure you have at least 5" - 6" of bed rail clearance. If you decide you don't want to use the revolution turning function, you can lock it out with bolts...

  • How To Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer With a 2018 Ram 2500 Power Wagon RamBox
In order to tow a 5th wheel trailer with a 2018 Ram 2500 Power Wagon that has the RamBoxes you will need a very specific setup which does not involve the factory prep package but rather an above bed fixed 5th wheel hitch and rotating pin box. The reason for this is that the RamBoxes will come into contact with a standard pin box unless this was changed out with a rotating option. I recommend the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140 with the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation...

  • Height Above Truck Bed of Curt 16541 Slider 5th Wheel Hitch When Used w/ Curt 16022 Adapter Rails
The # C16550 roller you mentioned isn't compatible with the A20 hitch. You'd want to use the # C16541 which combines the # C16140 hitch with a slider (a/k/a roller) unit. As that sits, the hitch is height adjustable from 17-1/2 inches up to 21-1/2 inches in height. Adding the # C16022 puck adapter would add 1-1/2 inches of height, making it adjustable from 19-23 inches in height above the floor of the truck bed. The # C16022 is needed if your truck has the factory mounting pucks in the...

  • Will Curt A20 Fit In The Rails Previously Use For Reese Kwik Slide 16K
The Curt A20 # C16140 is designed to fit in industry standard 5th wheel rails- I've attached a picture for reference that show the measurements on the holes that are found on these rails. From what I was able to find, the Reese Kwik Slide # RP30048 also fit in the industry standard above bed rail kits, so you won't have any problems using the Curt A20 in your old rails. The measurements provided in the diagram are from the center of one hole to another (center on center).

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for Smooth Ride with 2017 Ford F-250 and Reese Revolution Pin Box
The Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch # C16140 that you referenced is actually the exact hitch I recommend for providing the smoothest ride with the Reese Revolution pin box on your new trailer. This ride comfort starts at the A20's interlocking 2-jaw system that will completely wrap around the king pin. This not only creates an extremely secure connection with the trailer, but it also drastically reduces movement at this attachment point and allows for a really quiet ride. In addition to the...

  • Is the Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch Compatible with the Lippert Rota-Flex Pin Box
I spoke with my contact at Curt who said that the A20 5th Wheel Hitch # C16140 is compatible with the Trailair Rota-Flex 5th Wheel Pin Box without any additional components. He did say that they have heard of instances where the rubber pad on the Rota-Flex pops out of place which results in it prematurely wearing down the head unit of the A20 but since that problem is with the pin box you would have this same issue with any 5th wheel hitch. If you are replacing your pin box and this...

  • Solution for Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch That Doesn't Want To Release King Pin
I spoke with my contact at Curt and he recommended to have you pull away gently with the manual override of your brake controller slid and it will release the trailer from the hitch.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and 5th Wheel Towing Capacity of 2015 GMC 3500 Denali Dually
Based on my research, the 5th wheel towing capacity of a 2015 GMC 3500 Denali dually depends on if you have 2WD or 4WD. If it is 2WD the capacity would be 22,900 lbs and if it is 4WD the capacity is 22,600 lbs; I do recommend verifying this with your local GMC dealer. The fifth wheel hitch I highly recommend for your '15 GMC 3500 Denali is the Curt A20 # C16140 because it is extremely reliable and easy to use. The A20 will give you a highly secure connection with your trailer's king...

  • Recommended Equipment to Tow 5th Wheel Trailer With 2018 Ram 2500 With 8 Foot Bed
The best towing setup for your 2018 Ram 2500 with an 8 bed is going to consist of all the parts you mentioned - a fifth wheel hitch, base rails, suspension enhancement and a transmission cooler. The right fifth wheel hitch is going to be crucial and I highly recommend the Curt A20 # C16140 because it has a jaw system that is extremely secure and is simpler to use than many fifth-wheel hitches because of its color-coded indicator system. This color-coded system, which you can check out...

  • Can Curt 16k Fifth Wheel Hitch Tow 2018 Coachmen 5th Wheel 371mbrb
Your trailer at it's max weight would weight 15,000 lbs and your Curt Q16 (or A16 # C16120 based on jaw description) has a capacity of 16,000 lbs so you do not actually need to upgrade your hitch. You are totally fine as is! If you like the idea of having even more weight capacity than needed and wanted to upgrade to the 20k version of your hitch you'd have to replace the entire hitch as the legs and head are different between the 16 and 20k hitches. So for that you'd want the part #...
