Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. The tail light converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

The wiring harness was well worth the cost. It was straight forward to install and saved lots of time compared to making the harness myself. All lights worked immediately.

by:
2003 Toyota Tacoma

Easy installation and everything worked like OEM.

My order was received within the time frame when placed, was very well packaged. Have taken the evening it was received to review the instructions which were thorough and very understandable. This is I believe, the third time I have ordered from e-trailer, and I highly recommend them for a lot of needs not only trailer wiring. Highly recommended, great place to shop. Have yet to place it on the vehicle, but will update my experience later today.

1999 Toyota Tacoma

This wiring harness is easy and works. My 99' Tacoma doesn't have a connection for a trailer. I have put off having someone wire it for years. Mainly because of the expense and having to make time to take it somewhere. It was going to cost over $100.00 to have it done. Then I stumbled across etrailer.com while trying to see if there was some way to wire my truck myself. It took me fifteen minutes to hook this harness up. The reason it even took that long was because I was a little picky about how and where I wanted the plug to hang. Why can't everything be this simple?

by:
2003 Toyota Tacoma

I purchased the T-One vehicle wiring harness for my 2003 Toyota Tocoma. It was exactly the correct fit for my truck. This plug n play kit took no time to install and it completed my trailer hauling project. The I am extremely satisfied with the products and the customer service was impeccable. I would recommend this product and if you need any trailer supplies use etrailer, you be glad you did.

by:
2002 Toyota Tacoma

The wiring harness fit perfectly to my Tacoma. The video to help install were spot on. All items arrived on time, in good condition, and have worked flawlessly. Very satisfied.

by:
2000 Toyota Tacoma

The installation was exactly as the video shows. I did not install a bracket or tube cover for the wires. The installation took between 15-20 minutes. I used extra black zip ties to make sure the wiring is secured and doesn’t droop down. Other than that, it’s a very simple connect and play set up.

by:
1996 Toyota Tacoma

I really like this method of connecting wiring harnesses , there are no splices ( much better than in the "old days" ) .
splicing always seems to fail at some point .
the connectors fit perfectly and the wiring itself was just right, on lengths.
it took me about 15 minutes to install .
the only issue i had was that it was a little sung getting the T connectors to fit in the "taillight well" - it may have been easier if they had , just a inch more wire between them so they would bend away and down from the bulb fixtures better .
i haven't connected my trailer yet , but i have no doubt it will perform correctly , and all my truck lights are operating normally.
not entirely sure i understand what duty the converter performs , however i am happy that it includes one (from what i have read )

Thank You etrailer for the technical support from both Bill and Jameson. After Jameson's email and discussing with Bill in Tech Support, I verified that I had a good ground. Next, I checked the input voltage to converter with digital voltmeter and it was varying with turn signal between 3-9 VDC. So to be sure, I built myself a 12 VDC tester from old trailer light. With the tester on input terminals to the converter, I could see the turn signal light blinking, stop, park, and brake lights functioning correctly. Using the tester, I verified there was no brake or turn signal exiting the converter. I ordered the converter and received in 5 days. I installed yesterday. The instructions were clear and accurate. I removed the old harness and interlaced the new one along the same path with tie wraps and black electrical tape. I found a flat surface inside taillight housing and used the self adhesive tape on converter to mount converter. I put the tail lights back together and tested output at 4 wire trailer connector and everything is working correctly. I'm very pleased with etrailer and would recommend their technical support and overall operations to anyone having trailer light or other trailer problems. You are a great team at etrailer. Thanks

It was real easy to wire up to my truck. Everything still works and it matched up with any trailer I used.

by:
2003 Toyota Tacoma

I just received my new wiring harness yesterday, and I'm anxious for this weekend so I can get it installed. I've watched the instructional video and read the instructions that came packed in the package and nothing could be simpler. I bought this unit as a replacement unit. Shortly after buying my truck new in 2004, I installed a cheaper version using "SCOTCH-LOKS" to tap into the wiring. The original converter failed is the reason I bought your product. The only modification I needed to make was cutting off the molded on 4 pole connector so that I can use my existing BERG 7 round pin connectorthat fits my 5 trailers, 2 with electric brakes and batteries, 2 regular box trailers, and 1 flatbed trailer. I highly recommend using a quality di-electric grease at the vehicle plugs, it will greatly reduce the chance of corrosion at the plugs.
Thank you for a fantastic product.

Easy instructions to install. And great product

by:
2004 Toyota Tacoma

First off I watched both YouTube videos, one on the hitch and the other on the wiring. The videos told me what parts I would need to finish the install. Tools: I would suggest a impact wrench or drill. If using a wrench be careful the bolts are on there tight and when they let go you can scrape your hand on many different parts of the truck (not fun). The bumper and brackets disassemble is straight forward, have someone help hold the hitch while you put in the bolts. Put the brackets on and line up the holes but don't tighten all the way. When both sides are on you want to make sure they are both spaced the same. Then tighten the bolts. When running the wire just follow the wiring that is already there, I used about 15 plastic ties. The hitch is heavy and built like a tank, I will use it for occasionally pulling a 4x8 trailer with a motorcycle. Overall very satisfied with the hitch, wiring and etrailer.com.

My order, class II trailer hitch and wire harness, was on time and delivered with no missing parts. George sent me an email letting me know that the order shipped and then followed up to insure it was correct once received, I highly recommend George and his Company. They are honest and dependable people, which is a hard quality to find these days. Quality of the hitch was outstanding and the wiring harness went in without a hitch, sorta speak.

Thanks Etrailer, I will tell everyone I know about you.

your product has done a Great job. no problems with it and have used it many times. I as well would like to thank you for the follow up email. in today’s busy world it is not every one that takes the time to do this. If more companies would go back to the idea of Great Customer Service, as you have, it would most certainly be a much better world to live in.

Installation could not have been easier! Super straight forward instructions for both the wiring harness and the hitch, which I also bought from etrailer. Even had a instructional video for the wiring. I've used this 2" hitch on my 1999 Toyota Tacoma to haul my utility trailer loaded with 2 vintage Italian scooters on 600 mile+ trips and never had any issues. I also use it to haul my 17' sailboat with no problems. Lights always work!

Comments
No issues whatsoever. As good as the first dayboth hitch and wiring harness!

Installation was easy. The harness itself is a bit more complicated because of the inverter required because of the separate taillight circuits on the Tacoma pickup. I can't remember exactly the time frame but after 2 or 3 months the inverter in the harness failed. I called and there was no warranty, so I had to purchase another.

Shawn B. (& everyone I talked with at E Trailer) was wonderful.
Great phone support. Great products. We did a great job installing the wiring harness.
Made me wonder why we originally took it to a "professional" trailer sales & service place in Ogden UT. They hacked into our wiring & created problems.
I will continue to be a grateful customer.
Finding good people who know their stuff in todays world is a soul healing event.
Thank you E Trailer!

Replaced my current wiring harness which was spliced into my vehicles wiring harness. Very simple and easy to install. Only got 2 scrapes on my head from hitting the tail gate. Better than average scrapes, and 200 % better wiring harness. Etrailer has it figured out. Thanks again.

In the military and ready to hit the road when my trailer wiring harness lost a couple of lights. Uhaul wouldn't rent me the trailer until I got it fixed. Excellent customer service, shipping was extremely fast. I think someone came in on a Sunday to get my product out. Can't thank them enough.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Lighting Not Functioning on a Trailer with Damaged Wiring
It sounds like the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118379 that you referenced is installed correctly and is functioning properly. It also sounds like the trailer wiring issues you are experiencing are related to the damaged ground wires you have on the trailer. If you clean up the wiring and make sure everything is grounded properly your trailer lights should begin to function properly. I attached a couple FAQ articles on trailer wiring and 4-way troubleshooting for you to check out as well.

The 11.1 volts seems a smidge low since you should still be near 12 volts at the 4-Way. You can try moving the ground wire for the converter to a different location. Grounding it by itself and not to a shared ground location works best. Make sure it is attached to a clean and corrosion free bare metal surface with no paint or undercoating. The Draw-Tite # 118379 does include a taillight converter, it is the black plastic box mounted inline on the wiring harness. Your Tacoma uses what's called a separate, or 3-wire taillight system where the running lamps, brake lamps and turn signal are all on separate circuits. The vast majority of trailers use a simpler combined or two wire lighting system, where the turn signals and brake lamp are combined on the same circuit. The taillight converter takes the right turn, left turn and...
