Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. The tail light converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2002 Toyota Tacoma

Alright on this 2002 Toyota Tacoma, we're going to install product number 118379 from Tow Ready. Alright, first thing we have to do is go ahead and remove the tail lights. Right now we'll go ahead and disconnect the tail light from the harness. Alright, we're doing the passenger's side, let's go over to the driver side and repeat the same process. Over here on the driver's side we'll go ahead and take our 4-pole wire and we'll strap it at the bottom, alright. And we'll do the same thing for the T-Connector with the red and green wire.

We're going to take a second to attach our converter box at the back so I have a sheet metal right here. And we'll take our T-connector with the yellow and brown wire. We'll hook that up to the existing factory harness. We'll take our ground wire and we'll run that down as well and we'll attach it to the body underneath. Reattach the T-Connector to the light.

Alright, now at this point we can go ahead and reinstall the tail light. Alright, we'll take our ground wire and attach it to the sheet metal right here. Alright, next we'll go ahead and route our 4-pole over to the center of the hitch following the factory wire harness to do that. And let's leave it loose for now because we've also got to run the T-Connector with the green and red wire across to the other tail light. Pull up our wire harness and plug it into the factory wire harness just like we did before and we'll plug the half back into the tail light and we can reinstall the tail light.

Now we can go back to the vehicle and secure our wires. With the wires secured, last thing that you do is go ahead and test the wire harness with the light tester and we're going to go ahead and try it with the trailer. Alright, and there you have it, part number 118379 from Tow Ready.

Replaced my current wiring harness which was spliced into my vehicles wiring harness. Very simple and easy to install. Only got 2 scrapes on my head from hitting the tail gate. Better than average scrapes, and 200 % better wiring harness. Etrailer has it figured out. Thanks again. 667150

Thank You etrailer for the technical support from both Bill and Jameson. After Jameson's email and discussing with Bill in Tech Support, I verified that I had a good ground. Next, I checked the input voltage to converter with digital voltmeter and it was varying with turn signal between 3-9 VDC. So to be sure, I built myself a 12 VDC tester from old trailer light. With the tester on input terminals to the converter, I could see the turn signal light blinking, stop, park, and brake lights functioning correctly. Using the tester, I verified there was no brake or turn signal exiting the converter. I ordered the converter and received in 5 days. I installed yesterday. The instructions were clear and accurate. I removed the old harness and interlaced the new one along the same path with tie wraps and black electrical tape. I found a flat surface inside taillight housing and used the self adhesive tape on converter to mount converter. I put the tail lights back together and tested output at 4 wire trailer connector and everything is working correctly. I'm very pleased with etrailer and would recommend their technical support and overall operations to anyone having trailer light or other trailer problems. You are a great team at etrailer. Thanks 566403

I purchased the T-one Wiring Harness for my 1998 Toyota Pick--up. The harness is a plug and play installation with no wire spicing required. The harness does work well once installed correctly. My only complaint is that the instructions with the unit does not clearly state which side of the harness connects to the left tail light and which side connects to the right side. This should be CLEARLY stated in the instructions and it is not even mentioned. As a result, I installed the harness to the opposite tail lights and had to re-wire it after I tested it. This doubled the installation time from 45 minutes to about 90 minutes. This could be easily fixed by just labeling the side of the harness that connects to the appropriate light. This simple fix will turn a good harness into an excellent harness. 517352

I really like this method of connecting wiring harnesses , there are no splices ( much better than in the "old days" ) . splicing always seems to fail at some point . the connectors fit perfectly and the wiring itself was just right, on lengths. it took me about 15 minutes to install . the only issue i had was that it was a little sung getting the T connectors to fit in the "taillight well" - it may have been easier if they had , just a inch more wire between them so they would bend away and down from the bulb fixtures better . i haven't connected my trailer yet , but i have no doubt it will perform correctly , and all my truck lights are operating normally. not entirely sure i understand what duty the converter performs , however i am happy that it includes one (from what i have read ) 478876

Above excellent. I had previously bought a standard cut and wire in cheap unit and took an hour to cut and slice this in realizing that this did not include a brake wire adaption. I was going to figure it out and make it work. I saw this unit while looking for parts and thought I would try it and see if all worked. Someone would be crazy not to buy this unit. It is very very fast to hook up, accurate quality connectors and wire and EVERYTHING works just like the pickups tail lights and you don't need an Auto Technology degree to make all work instantly. The price is ridiculously low and having used this unit once I would instantly pay double next time. Also the big plus is you keep total integrity of your trucks wiring. We live in salty road winter conditions and it is not good to splice chassis wiring if you don't have to. This is a terrific product. 83224

Had the product for a year and it works flawlessly. Anyone would be nuts to try and wire in seperate wires as this impacts the wiring integrity of the original vehicle plus this product is ridiculously inexpensive, great quality and super fast and easy to install. Very good after market automotive product and this is from retired Euro Car Mechanic.

Installation was easy. The harness itself is a bit more complicated because of the inverter required because of the separate taillight circuits on the Tacoma pickup. I can't remember exactly the time frame but after 2 or 3 months the inverter in the harness failed. I called and there was no warranty, so I had to purchase another. 486083

This wiring harness is easy and works. My 99' Tacoma doesn't have a connection for a trailer. I have put off having someone wire it for years. Mainly because of the expense and having to make time to take it somewhere. It was going to cost over $100.00 to have it done. Then I stumbled across etrailer.com while trying to see if there was some way to wire my truck myself. It took me fifteen minutes to hook this harness up. The reason it even took that long was because I was a little picky about how and where I wanted the plug to hang. Why can't everything be this simple? 21880

  • Adding 7-Way Trailer Wiring to 2001 Toyota Tacoma
To get the 7-way trailer connector you are seeking, I recommend starting with the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118379. This will connect to your factory wiring behind the tail lights without any splicing. Then you will use the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L which gives you the 7-way connector, the circuit breaker for the 12V power wire and the yellow reverse light connection.
