Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the rear bumper, along the driver's-side frame rail.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

I recently moved to the Big Island of Hawaii where obtaining parts for vehicles has been very difficult. I have shy-ed away from utilizing the car dealers because their mark up on products are outrageous and turned to online shopping. I purchased a trailer and needed to replace the wiring harness on my truck in order to get my trailer street legal. I found the harness I needed on etrailer.com. The cost was very reasonable and they didn't charge me an arm and leg for shipping. Honestly I could have purchased two harness for the price the car dealership quoted me at. Normally when I purchase items online I receive it in 7 to 10 days. So when I got my box in THREE DAYS I was elated! I had no issues replacing the bad harness. All the electrical to the trailer WORKED! I wasted no time getting my trailer's safety inspection and registered so I can use it. Thank you ETRAILER!

2004 Chevrolet Colorado

Install was a breeze, worked flawlessly during the first tow. Appears to be a high quality product with good fit and finish. What more can I say... It is exactly what I needed and expected. I used a bit of extra wire loom I had laying around to add extra protection to the wires going to the plug, but beyond that everything was right there in the package thats needed to get up and running.

No problems so far with a years use. Again can not stress how simple the install was. Hard to go wrong with their products.

(The Good)
The wiring harness is easy
to install.
(The Bad)
The converter does not work properly on the trailer lights.
Brake & four way flasher lights work properly.
However parking lights don't come on. Also when the left or right turn signal is put on both of the trailer lights flash.
Truck is a 2005 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab Z71 without the 7-way connector

For the parking lights, the first step would be to find if the problem is in the vehicle wiring or in the trailer wiring itself. Use a circuit tester on the pin of the trailer connector fed by the brown wire while the vehicles headlights are on. If the pin shows power, the wiring harness and converter is fine. If it does not show power, and the connections are fully seated in place, then the wiring harness is faulty and should be replaced. The issue with both turn signals firing at the same time is a classic manifestation of a ground problem. Make sure the trailers main ground connection on the trailer tongue is securely fastened and not loose or corroded. Make sure each trailer lamp is securely grounded to the trailer frame, and that each connection is not corroded. Ive linked you to a help article about troubleshooting trailer wiring, I hope youll find it helpful.

Plug and play on my 2010 Canyon. Dropped the spare tire, opened tail light connector, plugged it in. Made a stud to ground to (clean, good grounds are very important). I found a perfect recess to “tuck” the module into. Add a wire tie, wal-la, trailer light harness.

by:
2004 Chevrolet Colorado

The wiring was correct for the truck plugins but the 4-way flat connector doesn't fit in the housing on the tailgate so it just blows in the breeze. When calling customer service through Curt they want you to buy a bracket they make. This is the third harness I've used on this truck and all of the others fit perfectly in the tailgate housing. Wouldn't buy again for a perfect OEM fit.

this is my 3rd one in 15 years they really work well when there working there are a lot of reviews in trailer wireing about trailer rite side brake lite not working they say check ground if its a ground problem you would have trouble with other circuits please check the t-connector for power on both sides first the box shorts out not supplying power to all wires

  • Troubleshooting the Curt T-Connector with 4-Pole # C55510 When the Tail Lights are not Working
First, check the connections on the vehicle that plug into the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # C55510. If one of the pins in the connector is bent or misaligned, then this could be the reason your taillights are not lighting up. If the the connection at the vehicle is good, then you can check the signal output at your vehicle's 4-flat plug. Have someone sit in the cab of the vehicle to operate the lights and turn signals. • Is There a Brake Controller Wire Front to Back on a 2005 GMC Canyon
The trailer brake output wire is not run from the front of the vehicle to the rear, you will need to do this yourself. In order to do this, we have a kit you can use which has the wire and everything else you need to install a trailer brake controller. The kit I am referring to is the 4 to 7-Way with 4-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. This will require an existing 4-way so if you don't already have one of these you'll need one. When installing the Peterson Trailer Tail Light # V457L and # V457 you should connect the brown wire on the tail lights to the tail light wire on the trailer (Brown wire on the 4-way you are using to test) and the green wire on the tail light to the yellow/green wire on the trailer (Yellow and green wire on the 4-way...

  • Troubleshooting Curt 55510 Trailer Wiring Harness with Low Voltage
Your problem could be the converter box. Test the wires on the harness before the box and see if you get the same voltage. If you do then the box isn't the issue and it's somewhere in the wiring before that. In this case you'll need to keep tracing the wires towards the front of the truck to find the problem. If the voltage on the # C55510 harness before the converter box is normal and still low at the connector then the converter is bad.
