Features:

  • Hydraulic actuator activates trailer's brakes when tow vehicle slows or stopss
  • Built-in drop helps you match tow vehicle height
  • Trigger latch allows for safe and easy coupling and uncoupling
    • Circle grip makes latch simple to use
    • Pull back on trigger to open ball socket
  • Unique roller design reduces resistance during telescoping to create straight-line movement
  • Sturdy, durable steel construction resists bending in jackknife situations
  • Corrosion-resistant zinc-plated finish
  • Breakaway kit included
  • Bolt-on installation

Specs:

  • Application: trailers with hydraulic drum brakes
  • Gross towing weight: 20,000 lbs
  • Maximum tongue weight: 2,000 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"
  • Mounting: straight, 4" wide trailer tongue
  • 1-Year warranty

Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4854000

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we'll take a look at this Titan bolt-on drum brake actuator with the drop for a 2 5/16 diameter ball, has a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with a surge brake system like this, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. And when this happens, this actuator right here will contract back and applies force to the master cylinder back here, and this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Now this actuator uses a unique roller design, just wanna zoom in and show you up close here. Right up here, if you notice, there's two rollers, and then right down here, there's two rollers and this will help produce resistance during the telescoping of your actuator to create a nice straight line movement. Also, if you notice on the rollers on each end, they do have a grease zerk fitting on them, which allows you to attach a grease gun, to give you easy lubrication of those rollers. Also, if you notice on the front here of the coupler does use a trigger latch design, and that allows for nice, safe, and easy coupling and uncoupling to your hitch ball. And a nice circle grip right here.

You can see that you put your finger in, makes the latch very simple to use. You just pull back from the trigger, lift it all the way up, and that opens the ball socket, now you can drop it onto your 2 5/16 ball. Once you get it onto the ball then just take your latch again, release it. And then you can put it back and you hear it latch and lock into place. And now it's locked onto your hitch ball.

Also, if you notice on this, it has this built-in drop on the coupler, which'll help you match the tow vehicle height. It is a very sturdy, durable steel construction, which will resist bending in any jackknife situations. And you can see the whole actuator has a nice zinc plating to it, to provide corrosion resistance. Now it also includes this breakaway kit. If you notice this chain right here.

You unwrap this chain, you can see it's a long chain, has a hook on the end and attaches to this handle or lever here. And breakaway kit is included and a breakaway kit is required by law. Basically what a breakaway kit does is you hook this to your tow vehicle. And then what'll happen is if by chance your trailer comes detached from your tow vehicle, it'll pull on this chain, which'll raise this lever and do the same thing. It'll apply the pressure in the master cylinder to the brakes to prevent a trailer runaway situation. And again, that is required by law and it is included with this actuator. This is a bolt-on installation, right down here you can see where it bolts on. It does mount to a straight four-inch-wide trailer tongue. Application, this is for trailers with drum brakes. The ball size we've mentioned, it fits on is a 2 5/16 diameter. This does have a gross towing weight capacity of 20,000 pounds, maximum tongue weight capacity of 2000 pounds. Now, one note I do wanna mention is because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout on the back here, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with either a reverse lockout solenoid on the back or free-backing brakes on the trailer so that you can drive in reverse without this actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. But that should do it for the review on this Titan bolt-on drum brake actuator with the built-in drop for a 2 5/16 diameter ball..
