  • Application: trailers with disc brakes
  • Gross towing weight: 20,000 lbs
  • Maximum tongue weight: 2,000 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"
  • Mounting: straight, 4" wide trailer tongue

Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4854100

Hi there. I'm Michael with Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Titan hydraulic brake actuator. This is a surge brake actuator that's going to bolt onto a four-inch wide straight trailer tongue. It will activate the trailer's disc brakes when the tow vehicle slows or stops. So, as that tow vehicle stops, the momentum of the trailer is going to force the actuator forward.

And it's going to then push that hydraulic fluid back to the brakes so they'll engage to slow the trailer down. This does have a unique roller design that's going to reduce resistance during that telescoping to help create a nice, straight-line movement. So, it's not going to bind up and that sort of thing. This does have a sturdy, durable steel construction. So, it is gonna resist bending and jackknife situations.

It's going to give us a gross towing weight capacity of 20,000 pounds and a maximum tongue weight of 2,000 pounds. It will provide this heavy-duty 2 5/16 inch ball coupler here that's going to connect the trailer to the towed vehicle. This does have this trigger latch that's going to allow for safe and easy coupling and uncoupling. The circle grip is gonna make that latch very simple to use, so that we can very easily open up our ball there, ball socket, so that we can get connected to the hitch ball on our tow vehicle and then lower it down to lock it in place. This does also have the breakaway kit included.

So, this will provide a four-foot long chain that will mount on or hook up to your trailer hitch, so that if for some reason your coupling we're to come off, or fail, or whatever the case may be, it's gonna pull this lever forward, which is going to activate the brakes. So, the trailer's not bouncing down the road on its own. It's gonna bring it to a nice, safe stop. So, that is going to be a nice feature there and typically required for trailers. On top of our sturdy steel construction, we are gonna have a corrosion resistant zinc plated finish that's gonna help keep this looking nice and help to add to that durability, so that it'll last us a nice, long time.

So overall, a really nice option here if you are in the market for a hydraulic brake actuator. Again, it will fit for four-inch wide straight trailer tongues. So, if that describes your application, I think this is gonna be a great option for you. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with Thanks for watching..
