Video Transcript for Thule Bike Locks - Cable Lock - TH538XT Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Thule six-foot long cable lock with the One-Key system lock. Now, you can loop this braided steel cable for your bike wheels, snowboard bindings, or any other accessory to keep your gear safe and secure. The cable has a nice, compact coil design to it for easy storage, and it can be keyed to match all your other Thule locks. Does include everything laid out here on the table: the cable lock itself, the One-Key lock cylinder, the master key, and then the two keys to lock and unlock the cable lock. This cable will secure your gear to your bike rack, roof rack, cargo carrier, and more. Does use the Thule One-Key system lock cylinder.

It can be swapped out to make all your locks keyed alike, if you prefer. Now, on the cable itself, it's a braided steel construction, which is very rugged and durable.Uses a polyethylene coating on the cable, which prevents it from scratching your gear and your carrier. And as we mentioned, it's nice coiled, compact design allows for easy storage. And if you notice, on this end where the lock cylinder goes has a nice hinge cap, and that'll protect the lock cylinder from the elements. A few specs on the cable, it's 5/16-inch diameter.

The length is six feet. And just to show you how this is work, to install your lock cylinder, you can use any key to install the lock cylinder, either the master key or the regular key, but you'll just go ahead and put your key in there. And then once you have it in there, you just can put it in there. And then you can take your key out, and your lock's, or your lock cylinder's installed. And then to lock it, all you have to do is wind this through your bike or wherever you're going to attach it to, and then push it in there, and it locks it right into place. And then to unlock it, just take one of these keys, turn it, and that'll unlock it from the cylinder.

Now, the master key what's that mainly used for is if you want to switch this out and make your locks all keyed alike to remove that lock cylinder, just put the master key in there, and you can pull the lock cylinder right out. You can install it with the master cylinder, or with them master key also. Once you've got it installed, then you have to use these keys to lock the cable or unlock it. But that should do it for the review on the Thule six-foot long cable lock with the One-Key system lock.

We're very happy with the Thule 2-bike rack (TH958) & associated locks (THSTL2)& cables (TH538XT) we bought through etrailer. This setup works great on the back of our 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee with our two adult bikes -- we would recommend this combination to others without hesitation :) 390685

The lock worked well on a trip from Central New York to North Carolina. But, after the trip the lock failed to work properly. etrailer.com was contacted and I was sent a new lock. Working very well. Great customer service made me a happy bike guy! 277072

Solid lock. I wish it was longer or that they at least offered a longer version. I like that you can buy replacement locks or multiple locks so you use one key for multiple Thule products (in this case, I have the 990XT hitch and I love it!) 53255

I got this lock together with the replacement knobs for my Thule Spare Me Bike carrier. I bought the replacement arm knobs after someone stole one of them. The lock pretty held my bikes to the bike rack until this morning when some perp cut the cable with a bolt cutter while on a parking lot in Sacramento. Good thing my Specialized bikes were not taken as my friend came back from a local fastfood and scared the perp away. The locking mechanism was solid, being Thule -made; only the cable was defeated by a boltcutter. It hurts me that the cable lock set me back $35 that only lasted only two weeks. sigh...My wife's gonna kill me for this... 48834

I'm very pleased. Ordered by phone and got great help to fit my 2010 GMC Yukon. The order arrived quickly and in good shape and after a quick read of the instructions installed the rack and tried it out. Everything works great and I look forward to many years of enjoyment as I travel the country with my new bike rack. 344191

These locks for some reason are not made well. This has nothing to do with etrailer, it simply comes down to the quality control with Thule. When I received this lock the lock cylinder was not installed into the lock like most Thule locks come. You most of the time have to install the cylinder. It also comes with the two keys to open and close your lock, and it comes with a universal master key, which is used to remove the lock from your cable or set the lock cylinder into cable. The inside of the cable where the cylinder goes was not fabricated correctly. The lock cylinder would set into the cable. After numerous tries I took this set up down to a lock store that sells Thule equipment. They pulled 3 of the same locks off the shelf that I brought in. 2 of the 3 had the same problem as I was having with the one I received from etrailer. They were nice and gave me one of the locks that worked, and took the one I brought in to send back to Thule with the other 2 for warranty. This is again in no way a bashing or negative comment for etrailer. The quality of this lock is horrible per Thule 130820

Everything was of great quality and I was impressed with the quality of protective cap on locking device. Suggestion if the cable could be another 1 to 1.5 feet longer. This way you lock bike carrier and bikes to trailer hitch safety chains attachment on hitch. 682258

  • Recommended Option to Carry Bikes and Skis on 2008 Land Rover LR2 HSE
  • There are a couple options for that are going to allow you to haul bikes as well as your skis and snowboard on your 2008 Land Rover LR2 HSE, and I'll go over both. The first option is to put a roof rack on your Land Rover and add roof-mounted bike racks along with a separate ski/snowboard carrier. The roof rack I recommend for your '08 Land Rover LR2 with a naked roof is from Rhino-Rack and consists of Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRVA126B-2 (Black) OR # RRVA126S-2 (Silver), 2500 Series...

  • Availability of 4-Bike Hanging-Style Bike Rack that can be Converted to 2-Bike Design
  • It sounds like you are looking for a hanging-style bike rack that can be extended from a 2-bike model to a 4-bike model, and vise versa. The best option for a hanging-style rack will be to simply go with a 4-bike model, such as the excellent Thule Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR, then only use the inner most cradles when transporting just 2 bikes. There is not a hanging-style rack currently available that can be physically converted from a 4-bike design to a 2-bike. The Thule Hitching...

The differences in installation between the EcoHitch Hidden Hitch and the DrawTite # 76271 are directly correlated to the benefits of one over the other. The reason that the DrawTite hitch doesn't require that trimming is because it is mounted...

  • The Thule Roadway 2 Bike Rack # TH912XTR referenced in your question is a nice, hanging-style rack that features dual arms to support the bike's frame. Since your bike's frame doesn't run in a straight line from the seat post to the handlebar post, you likely will just need an adapter bar like the Kuat # UB01. If you really wanted to be certain you would just need to make sure the distance from your hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the spare tire is no more than 11" but the trailer hitch receivers we have available for the RAV4 will allow room for the Roadway so yours should too...

As you referenced in your question, a Class II hitch will absolutely work in terms of its weight capacity to transport up to 3 bikes. The reason I recommend going with a Class III hitch, considering that you will likely never come close to reaching its weight capacities, is because of the 2 inch receiver that it provides....

The main advantage that you add with this kit over the anti-rattle bolt that comes with the rack is the hitch lock to secure the bike rack to the trailer hitch. To fold the arms down or to tilt the rack back away from the vehicle, the Hitching Post Pro uses snapper pins that need to be removed, while the Vertex uses quick release latches.
