Note: Roadmaster direct-connect base plates will only work with Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch, such as the Sterling, Blackhawk, Blackhawk 2, Falcon, or Falcon 2. These base plates will not work with tow bars that require a hitch ball.


The drawbars, or front arms, on this base plate kit are supremely easy to mount and remove. Just insert them into the brackets and twist to lock them in place. To remove each arm, simply tug the built-in pull pin to disengage the lock, twist the arm back and pull it out of the bracket. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

Ryan: Hey, everybody. Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today on our 2014 Jeep Wrangler, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate kit. As this is going to allow us to connect to a tow bar, which in turn, will allow us to flat tow our Jeep down the road. That's going to be nice when you're going on a vacation or a road trip you're not going to have to have somebody drive your Jeep separately.In my opinion, compared to some of the other base plates on the market, this one's going to have a more heavy-duty and rugged look, which obviously blends in nicely with our Jeep's appearance. Now, once you get your hands on this base plate kit you're going to be able to tell that it's built very heavy-duty and solid.Many of our customers are relatively new to the flat tow world.

They can feel a little overwhelmed on which components to get. In actuality, it's relatively simple. There's five main components. One of them being our base plate. You're going to need four more.

A braking system, a diode wiring kit, a tow bar, and safety cables.Now, I do want to point out that every tow bar isn't going to work with every style of arms for our base plate kit, so you need to make sure whatever style tow bar you're using will match up to those arms. If they don't, it's not a huge deal because there are many brackets and adapters available to pair the two together correctly. Now, when it comes to installing and removing your arms, it's going to be extremely easy. You're just going to turn it, put it into the base plate, and spin it a quarter turn until our pin locks in.Now, one of the things that separates this EZ 5 from the EZ 4 is that you're not going to have to use a crossbar, which would come in between the two arms. It's going to be a little more user-friendly and it's going to be one less thing you're going to have to worry about setting up.

Our base plate is going to have a very straightforward installation. One of the things I would highly recommend picking up for that is some red Loctite. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and put it on together now.To begin our installation, we're going to need to remove our rock guard. Now, we're going to remove four plastic fasteners here on this front edge. They're all going to remove the same.

I'm going to use a trim panel tool. However, a flathead screwdriver will work too. Let's get underneath the head of it, kind of pry down and pop it out. We're going to have two more plastic fasteners behind our rock guard in this area. We're going to remove these the same way that we removed the other ones. Now, if the head just pops out and the base stays in, you just pry underneath the base to get it removed. Then we can set our rock guard off to the side.From the inside, take one of our long bolts and a flat washer. We're going to push this bolt through the hole to the outside of the frame rail. Now, here on the outside of the frame rail here's the bolt that we pushed through. Now, on the bolt, we're going to put on one of these pipe spacers. Slide it on like that. We're going to take one of our side brackets and place it over that. Now, these brackets are side specific, so be sure to check with your instructions to make sure you have the correct one. We'll slide that end over. Then, for now, we're just going to loosely hand-tighten our hardware. First, starting with the flat washer, a split lock washer, and a nut.With this side assembled, we're going to go ahead and repeat that same process on the driver's side. Now, keep in mind from this point on anything that we do to one side you will do to the other. We're going to take our main receiver brace and slide that on the front of our Jeep. What we're going to do is take an inch and three-quarter bolt with a flat washer and run it through our bracket, through our receiver brace just like that. Get one on each side, that way it'll hold itself steady while we work on the rest of the hardware.Now, for the bottom hole, we're going to put our bolt through, but this time we're going to put a split lock washer on our bolt, and then a flat washer. We will feed it through the hole, and with that bottom one in I'm actually going to pull these top ones back out and put on the lock washer and put our flat washer back on and put it back in. Now, to secure our bolts that we pushed through we're going to using handle nuts. But before we put these on you're going to want to use some Loctite on the threads. The way these work is you'll hold the handle and push it up through the opening, line it up with the end of the bolt, and spin that bolt. You'll kind of feel it get started. Just run it down a few threads for now, make sure it's started, and I'll repeat that same process for the three remaining bolts.With all of our handle nuts in place and hand-tight, you can use a three-quarter inch socket to snug them down. Now, we can tighten up our bolts up here, but once again, before we do that, let's take a little Loctite and put a drop on the threads. Now, down here at the bottom, we're going to have another point where we need to secure. We're going to use an inch and a half bolt on a split lock washer and a flat washer. Put a dab of Loctite on the threads. Now, on the other side of this frame rail, we're going to drop on this plate and it's actually threaded, and so we'll set that down in there and thread our bolt into it. With them started, now we can tighten them down.Now, I'm going to use a torque wrench to torque everything down. You can find that specification in your instructions. With everything torqued down, now we can cut off this length of handle nut so it's not hanging down.Now we need to trim out our rock guard. Now, there is a diagram with some measurements in our instructions, and I went ahead and marked it out here. Now, what I like to do is just hold it in place and kind of eyeball it and make sure everything will clear. A good rule of thumb is to cut everything a little shy and test fit it, and that way if it doesn't fit we can always cut some more off.Now I'm going to use a Dremel tool to make these cuts. However, this is fairly thin plastic, so you could probably get away with using some tin snips. With our rock shield cut, we can put it back into place and re-secure it using the original fasteners. Just push them in and push the head of it down.That'll do it for our look at and our installation of the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit on our 2014 Jeep Wrangler.

First I'd like to provide a few comments on e-trailer. I'm a return customer, and will continue to be. The price was right, the delivery was really fast, and the kit arrived with all the parts, and in pristine condition. The big, heavy, part of this kit was well-packed, and even the little metal prongs on the front arrived undamaged. I took the time to watch the e-trailer installation video but it appears that the kit they used in the demo had some minor configuration differences from that delivered. That wasn't really an issue, since the directions in the kit were consistent with the configuration of my kit. But now, about the kit. I installed a previous version Roadmaster base plate kit on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport. It took me about an hour. This "new, improved" version... about six hours, spread over two days. Some was my fault, some bad directions, and some just bad luck, but the design of the kit was not user-installation-friendly, or an improvement of any kind over the older design. First, the new kit has both brackets connected by a large, beefy, bar. Great, except trying to get everything to line up is now much harder since the flanges on the kit are barrrrely wide enough to slip over the frame extensions on the Jeep. If you're off even a hair, they bind and you can't line up the bolt holes. And, with the brackets all in one piece, BOTH sides have to be lined up simultaneously. Lining up the bolt holes by tapping alternate sides with a hammer (my solution) works, but it sure is tedious. Oh, and there is a metal tab on the back side of the bar, behind the wiring prongs (not sure why it's there, maybe it serves a purpose on some other vehicle installation?). This tab is located in an EXTREMELY inconvenient location as, in addition to the problems lining up the bolt holes in the tight-fitting flanges on the frame extensions, you have to slide this tab through a little slot that you cut in the air dam. I found it easiest to NOT attach ANY of the air dam fasteners until I had at least one bolt on each side started. I just hung the air dam on this tab, jacked the whole thing into place, fiddled and hammered until I got a couple bolt holes lined up, and THEN fastened the air dam back in place. So far, the installation was just irritating and tedious, but no worse than some other auto repair work one might undertake. Now comes the "bad directions" part. Roadmaster includes some nuts with little wires tacked on so you can hold the nut in place on the blind side of the frame while you run the bolts in to snug them up. I found it useful to run those bolts through the nuts BEFORE doing anything to clear out the paint on the nut threads so they'll start a little easier. The Roadmaster directions supplied with the kit are VERY SPECIFIC (Step 5), stating that the LOWER nut should be put in place first, and then the UPPER. Since the access is through an opening in the UNDERSIDE of the frame, putting the lower bolt in first blocks access to the upper bolt. I followed the instructions on the first side and that is EXACTLY what happened, causing a significant problem. Since my access to the upper bolt was blocked by the installed lower one, I had to twist and fiddle the upper nut into place. When I started to tighten, the little holder wire bent around the lower bolt, and then broke, before nut had not yet snugged down. If you should find yourself in this awkward position, the quickest and simplest solution is to remove the plastic cover from above the frame - right in front of the grill, where a winch would normally mount - and go in from the top with a wrench to grab that spinning nut. When I installed the bolts on the other side, I did the upper one first, and then the lower, and had no such problems. Once you get them snugged down, they'll pretty much hold themselves so you can torque to the proper spec, and you're done. All in all, this install was MANY times more difficult than the original Roadmaster TWO-PIECE base plate kit for the Jeep Wrangler. Additionally, I don't particularly like the new design anyway, beyond the more difficult install. The huge bar that connects the two brackets (that are independent on the older design) sticks down lower, and reduces clearance in the front a bit. The "EZ twist locks" on the brackets themselves ARE easy to install, though because of clearance with the bar in the kit I have, have to be installed upside down compared with the etrailer video demo. While easy to install, the new hitch point brackets offer no obvious positive visual cue that one can quickly look at when you're hitching up to confirm that they're locked. I guess I'll get used to that, but I don't like it. Though I suppose Roadmaster has done the design work, the new "twist lock" brackets also don't look nearly as durable as the old ones, which simply used a hitch pin to secure the bracket to the piece attached to the frame extension. A MUCH harder install, and a less obviously robust attachment system than the previous design leaves me wondering where the improvement is in the new design. I already owned a Roadmaster tow bar (and like it), so I didn't have much choice. I've towed my new 2016 Jeep with the new bracket, and got back with the Jeep still securely attached to the tow vehicle, so it DOES work. 259161

Product arrived very quick. It is well made and came complete with all hardware and instructions. The only problem was that it has extra mounting plates for each side that doesn't show up on any of the videos. The instructions say if there isn't a hole on the outside of the frame on each side just to drill through from the inside to make the hole on the outside. There is barely enough room to get your hand in there let alone a drill. I lined up the lower holes on the mounting plate with the holes on the frame and marked the upper hole, drilled a pilot hole and checked the inside and adjusted accordingly then drilled the final hole. I like the fact that I can remove the tow arms so they are not shin busters. 518321

The parts arrived way sooner than expected (seems to be a hibit for e-trailer). Don't get me wrong that's excellent. As for the installation it went very smooth except for trying to lock the bolts in. place with the wire and red loctite took a bit of engineering and finding the right tool/screwdriver and a steel plate to keep the nut plate from spinning and got it to lock up tighten. From start to finish I probably had an hour thirty in this install. I tried multiple cutting tools for trimming the lower plastic panel. A good razor knife worked the best for me. After I loose fit the bar on my jeep, I took the plastic valance panel loose and let it hang on the tow bar. I was able to access the bottom bolts easier and use my screw driver to hold the inner flat nuts on the side ones easier as well. I had to clean the threads on the bottom flat plates which I wish I had seen before I started the assembly. All in all no biggie. My wiring bracket piping was bent in transit. I was able to bend them back in place and then up slightly to make it easier for me to plug in my motorhome harness. Great engineering. Simple process. I really like the way the tow bar sits under and slightly behind the front of the bumper. Clean set up. 229558

Product construction quality is very good, but it did not slip into place and I had to drill two holes in my stock 2010 Jeep's frame because the holes in the bracket were off by over two inches on both sides of the bracket. I called Roadmaster and they couldn't explain the holes not lining up with the stock frame holes or why it did not fit into place. Their suggestion to drive onto one end of the bracket and then pry on the other end to bend the bracket was not possible due to all the welded on bracket members. I ended up using the tire jack and a short board to apply pressure to widen the bracket the 1/8" needed to fit over my Jeeps frame. Had everything fit as advertised mounting would only take 1-2 hours with simple tools, as it was it took 5 hours with a trip into town to buy drill bits I didn't have in my motorhome's tool box. The bracket is well made and should work well, but taking on this project without a full shop available is risky and could lead you into a situation where your begging a commercial shop to mount your internet purchased bracket. 355229

Very pleased with the fit and finish of the EZ5 that I installed on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The directions need to be updated a bit as there were two brace plates not shown but easy enough to figure out. I connected my RoadMaster tow bar, a Falcon 5250, to the EZ5 base. The tow bar, I bought from Etrailer years ago, has been used on my last 5 Jeeps that I have towed behind my motorhomes. The base plate attachments seem to change from year to year to fit the Jeeps.
