Note: Roadmaster direct-connect base plates will only work with Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch, such as the Sterling, Blackhawk, Blackhawk 2, Falcon, or Falcon 2. These base plates will not work with tow bars that require a hitch ball.

The drawbars, or front arms, on this base plate kit are supremely easy to mount and remove. Just insert them into the brackets and twist to lock them in place. To remove each arm, simply tug the built-in pull pin to disengage the lock, twist the arm back and pull it out of the bracket. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit Installation - 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Ryan: Hey, everybody. Ryan here at etrailer.com.Today on our 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Roadmaster Direct-Connect baseplate kit with removable arms. Now, the reason you would want this baseplate is when it's in place, it's going to allow us to connect to a tow bar, which in turn will let us flat tow our Jeep down the road. That's going to be nice. That way, when you're going out of town, you don't have to worry about finding another person to drive your Jeep separately. Now, compared to some of the other base plates on the market, in my opinion, this one just has a more heavy duty feel and a more rugged look, which that obviously blends in nicely with Jeep's appearance. Now, whenever you actually get your hands on this baseplate kit, you're going to tell just how solid it really is. You're going to know that it's built to last for a very long time. While many of our customers are relatively new to the flat tow world, and they can feel a little overwhelmed on which components to get. It's actually relatively simple.

You're only going to need four more components. You're going to need a braking system, a diode wiring kit, a tow bar, and safety cables. Now, I do want to point out that every baseplate isn't going to work with every single tow bar, so you need to make sure that your arms are going to match up with your style of tow bar. Now, if it doesn't, it's not that big of a deal because there are many different styles of brackets and adapters available that could pair the two together correctly. Now, what sets this baseplate apart from the easy four is that you're not going to have to use a crossbar, which that'll come all the way across here. It's a little more user friendly, and it's one less thing that you have to worry about setting up.When it comes to removing or installing your arms, it's really easy. You'd simply just turn it like this so this pin is facing out, push it in, and turn it, and that pin will lock into that recessed area there, and that's all it takes. Now, the arms actually have a little tab here with a hole drilled in them, and that's going to be used for a padlock, which can actually lock your tow bars to your baseplate to help prevent any theft. Now, one of the things I would highly recommend getting for the installation is some red Loctite.

Now, speaking on the install, it's actually relatively easy and straightforward. Let's go ahead and do it together now.To begin our installation, we're going to come to the front of the Jeep, and we're going to have to remove our plastic rock guard. We're going to have to remove four plastic fasteners in the front. One here, here, here, and here. Now, to do that, I would recommend a trim panel removal tool.

But if you don't have one, a flathead screwdriver will work just fine. You're gonna slip it in between this opening, kind of pry down, and that center section will come lose and you'll be able to pull the whole fastener out. I'm going to do that for the remaining three in the front. Then we're going to come up on the inside of our rock guard and hit two more of those fasteners undone. We're going to have one just like that on each side, and we'll use that same method as the ones on the front to get these removed. Now, if the center section pops out and the bottom piece doesn't, you can just take your tool and pry it off like that. Now, when we undo this last fastener, nothing's gonna be holding our rock guard in place, so you want to use your other hand to support it while you remove this last one. We're going to lower this down and set it off to the side for now. Now, we're going to have to locate a hole in our frame rail on the passenger's side.

It's going to be right here, and it's towards the front, and right above where our sway bar mounts to the frame. Now, what we're going to do is take our long bolt and a half inch flat washer and push it through that hole. Just like that. Here's where the other side of our bolt came through to the outside of the frame. Now, with it sticking out like this, what we're gonna do is take one of our spacers that came included in our kit, and slide that over the bolt. Then you're going to take our bracket. Now, these are side specific, and there's not any markings or anything like that on them, so just look at the diagram in your instructions to make sure you have the right side. What we're going to do is take the end with one hole on it and just loosely slide that over it. We're going to finish it off with a flat washer, a split lock washer, and finally a nut. Now, you don't need to crank all the hardware down just yet. Just get the nut started, and hand tighten. Now, the driver's side is going to be set up exactly the same, so just repeat that exact process. Now with an extra set of hands, we're going to put our baseplate in place. Now, these two holes in the baseplate are going to line up with these two holes in the sub frame. We'll line those up, and then we'll take our inch and three quarter long bolts, a split lock washer and flat washer, and put that through our bracket, through the baseplate, and into the hole in the sub frame. We'll make sure those are in there good, and that'll be enough to hold the baseplate up in place while we work on getting the rest of the hardware secured. Now we're gonna take one of these tabbed flange nuts, and use some red Loctite on the threads. What we're going to do is put it in through this opening and see the other end of that bolt, and get it threaded on. Just want to get it hand tight for the time being. We're going to do the same thing for the bolt on top, except instead of doing through this opening, we're gonna go through this opening right here. Then we're going to repeat that same process over on the driver's side. We're going to have one more hole on each side remaining on the bottom. That goes up and into the sub frame. Now, we're going to use an inch and a half long bolt, the flat washer and a split lock washer. We're going to put some red Loctite on the threads and how this is going to work, we push this up into the sub frame on the top side it's open, and so we're going to take this nutted backing plate and set that inside, and the bolt is actually going to thread into that and sandwich the baseplate to the sub frame. Drop that in. Can use our hand to line it up. You will have to put a little downward pressure on that plate, because when we push up on the plate, we want it to stay in place. Once again, we'll get it hand tight, and do the same thing on the driver's side. Now, before we tighten all of our hardware down, we're going to come back to the side where we first installed that first bolt. Just loosen up that nut, and put on some red Loctite. You'll want to do that to each side. Pop our nut back on, and now we can tighten everything down. We're going to snug up our two side ones first, and then this one up here, which if you go to tighten this one and the other side of the bolt head is spinning, you might have to take a box wrench and hold it. Then finally, one on the bottom. Now using a torque wrench, we'll torque all of our hardware down to the number specified in our instructions. Now I went ahead and cut off the ends of our handle nuts, and you could just use a pair of snips or even bend them back and forth until they break. Now we're going to cut our rock guard according to the diagram in our instructions. What I kind of like to do is mark everything, and then kind of just hold it up in place as close as I can, and just eyeball everything to make sure it's going to clear. Now, a good rule of thumb is you can cut everything a little shy and try to test fit it, and if it doesn't fit, you can always cut more off. Now, I'm going to cut these openings out with a rotary tool. Now, you can also use a pair of tin snips. The plastic is fairly thick, so a sharp knife might work as well. Just be careful. This is what our panel is going to look like once it is completely trimmed. Now we can put it back in place. To do that, we're going to kind of have to work this scenario around our two tabs here, and kind of slide it in and up just like that. Then we can reinsert our plastic fasteners. To do that, you're going to want to kind of pull this center section out as far as it can go without completely removing it. That way these three prongs are more flexible. Just put it through the hole in the rock guard into the chassis, and push up on that center section. Now, the baseplate does come with a bracket to hold an electrical connector, such as a six volt. Now, if you're wanting to use this, all you would do is take the two included self-tapping screws, line the holes up, and run those down into those mounting points. That'll do it for our look at and installation of the Roadmaster Direct-Connect baseplate kit on our 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

Product arrived very quick. It is well made and came complete with all hardware and instructions. The only problem was that it has extra mounting plates for each side that doesn't show up on any of the videos. The instructions say if there isn't a hole on the outside of the frame on each side just to drill through from the inside to make the hole on the outside. There is barely enough room to get your hand in there let alone a drill. I lined up the lower holes on the mounting plate with the holes on the frame and marked the upper hole, drilled a pilot hole and checked the inside and adjusted accordingly then drilled the final hole. I like the fact that I can remove the tow arms so they are not shin busters. 518321

Great experience, quick shipping, excellent video and instructional references to go along with the products. I did the installation of the product myself and without the text and instructional video's there is no way I would have been 100% successful. These are the extra value add things that make the difference when shopping with etrailer, I will be a return customer. The base plate is of high quality construction and fit perfectly on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler. I use this with the Falcon 2 tow bar for my 2016 Jeep Wrangler - 2014 Fleetwood Bounder motorhome combination. 339284

The parts arrived way sooner than expected (seems to be a hibit for e-trailer). Don't get me wrong that's excellent. As for the installation it went very smooth except for trying to lock the bolts in. place with the wire and red loctite took a bit of engineering and finding the right tool/screwdriver and a steel plate to keep the nut plate from spinning and got it to lock up tighten. Looks great and looks like part on the Jeep The taillight package was flawless and went in better than I expected... just enough cable between lights and to the front of the Jeep... 302066

The product was exactly what I ordered and fit as easily as etrailer's very informative video tutorial showed that it would. The product was delivered before the expected date. And I was able to easily track the shipment. The best part of the etrailer experience was the extremely helpful staff member, Katie. My card had a problem going thru and Katie was as helpful in clearing that up as she was in assisting with the actual order. I will absolutely recommend etrailer to everyone. 253106

I haven't installed yet, but it is going to be a perfect fit after doing a quick placement. Installation will be easy, no drilling, just bolt on and cut holes in the plastic valence. Once installed I will be towing behind a motorhome. Etrailer is GREAT, quick and informative videos and emails to let you know items have arrived. 573894

2010 Jeep Wrangler

Product construction quality is very good, but it did not slip into place and I had to drill two holes in my stock 2010 Jeep's frame because the holes in the bracket were off by over two inches on both sides of the bracket. I called Roadmaster and they couldn't explain the holes not lining up with the stock frame holes or why it did not fit into place. Their suggestion to drive onto one end of the bracket and then pry on the other end to bend the bracket was not possible due to all the welded on bracket members. I ended up using the tire jack and a short board to apply pressure to widen the bracket the 1/8" needed to fit over my Jeeps frame. Had everything fit as advertised mounting would only take 1-2 hours with simple tools, as it was it took 5 hours with a trip into town to buy drill bits I didn't have in my motorhome's tool box. The bracket is well made and should work well, but taking on this project without a full shop available is risky and could lead you into a situation where your begging a commercial shop to mount your internet purchased bracket. 355229

My wife Carol and I are thrilled with our Roadmaster towbar mounting bracket which we purchase from etrailer.com. It installed very easily, and the video on your website that explained the process was very helpful and accurate in regards to how the process would go. It was great to see that your product mated up with factory holes in the frame! I should have mentioned, that the product as well as the shipping box it self, despite it's weight, arrived in perfect shape! Thanks for great service and a great product! Respectfully, Eric and Carol 417671

It arrived in a timely manner was easy to install. My son and I did it in about 2 hours. Perfect fit the plug mounting studs were slightly bent during shipment but easily straightened. The wiring harness took much longer to install but I’m kind of pickie. I was able to feed inside the frame from front to back. Thanks for a great looking product. 476994

From start to finish I probably had an hour thirty in this install. I tried multiple cutting tools for trimming the lower plastic panel. A good razor knife worked the best for me. After I loose fit the bar on my jeep, I took the plastic valance panel loose and let it hang on the tow bar. I was able to access the bottom bolts easier and use my screw driver to hold the inner flat nuts on the side ones easier as well. I had to clean the threads on the bottom flat plates which I wish I had seen before I started the assembly. All in all no biggie. My wiring bracket piping was bent in transit. I was able to bend them back in place and then up slightly to make it easier for me to plug in my motorhome harness. Great engineering. Simple process. I really like the way the tow bar sits under and slightly behind the front of the bumper. Clean set up. 229558

2016 Jeep Wrangler

First I'd like to provide a few comments on e-trailer. I'm a return customer, and will continue to be. The price was right, the delivery was really fast, and the kit arrived with all the parts, and in pristine condition. The big, heavy, part of this kit was well-packed, and even the little metal prongs on the front arrived undamaged. I took the time to watch the e-trailer installation video but it appears that the kit they used in the demo had some minor configuration differences from that delivered. That wasn't really an issue, since the directions in the kit were consistent with the configuration of my kit. But now, about the kit. I installed a previous version Roadmaster base plate kit on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport. It took me about an hour. This "new, improved" version... about six hours, spread over two days. Some was my fault, some bad directions, and some just bad luck, but the design of the kit was not user-installation-friendly, or an improvement of any kind over the older design. First, the new kit has both brackets connected by a large, beefy, bar. Great, except trying to get everything to line up is now much harder since the flanges on the kit are barrrrely wide enough to slip over the frame extensions on the Jeep. If you're off even a hair, they bind and you can't line up the bolt holes. And, with the brackets all in one piece, BOTH sides have to be lined up simultaneously. Lining up the bolt holes by tapping alternate sides with a hammer (my solution) works, but it sure is tedious. Oh, and there is a metal tab on the back side of the bar, behind the wiring prongs (not sure why it's there, maybe it serves a purpose on some other vehicle installation?). This tab is located in an EXTREMELY inconvenient location as, in addition to the problems lining up the bolt holes in the tight-fitting flanges on the frame extensions, you have to slide this tab through a little slot that you cut in the air dam. I found it easiest to NOT attach ANY of the air dam fasteners until I had at least one bolt on each side started. I just hung the air dam on this tab, jacked the whole thing into place, fiddled and hammered until I got a couple bolt holes lined up, and THEN fastened the air dam back in place. So far, the installation was just irritating and tedious, but no worse than some other auto repair work one might undertake. Now comes the "bad directions" part. Roadmaster includes some nuts with little wires tacked on so you can hold the nut in place on the blind side of the frame while you run the bolts in to snug them up. I found it useful to run those bolts through the nuts BEFORE doing anything to clear out the paint on the nut threads so they'll start a little easier. The Roadmaster directions supplied with the kit are VERY SPECIFIC (Step 5), stating that the LOWER nut should be put in place first, and then the UPPER. Since the access is through an opening in the UNDERSIDE of the frame, putting the lower bolt in first blocks access to the upper bolt. I followed the instructions on the first side and that is EXACTLY what happened, causing a significant problem. Since my access to the upper bolt was blocked by the installed lower one, I had to twist and fiddle the upper nut into place. When I started to tighten, the little holder wire bent around the lower bolt, and then broke, before nut had not yet snugged down. If you should find yourself in this awkward position, the quickest and simplest solution is to remove the plastic cover from above the frame - right in front of the grill, where a winch would normally mount - and go in from the top with a wrench to grab that spinning nut. When I installed the bolts on the other side, I did the upper one first, and then the lower, and had no such problems. Once you get them snugged down, they'll pretty much hold themselves so you can torque to the proper spec, and you're done. All in all, this install was MANY times more difficult than the original Roadmaster TWO-PIECE base plate kit for the Jeep Wrangler. Additionally, I don't particularly like the new design anyway, beyond the more difficult install. The huge bar that connects the two brackets (that are independent on the older design) sticks down lower, and reduces clearance in the front a bit. The "EZ twist locks" on the brackets themselves ARE easy to install, though because of clearance with the bar in the kit I have, have to be installed upside down compared with the etrailer video demo. While easy to install, the new hitch point brackets offer no obvious positive visual cue that one can quickly look at when you're hitching up to confirm that they're locked. I guess I'll get used to that, but I don't like it. Though I suppose Roadmaster has done the design work, the new "twist lock" brackets also don't look nearly as durable as the old ones, which simply used a hitch pin to secure the bracket to the piece attached to the frame extension. A MUCH harder install, and a less obviously robust attachment system than the previous design leaves me wondering where the improvement is in the new design. I already owned a Roadmaster tow bar (and like it), so I didn't have much choice. I've towed my new 2016 Jeep with the new bracket, and got back with the Jeep still securely attached to the tow vehicle, so it DOES work. 259161

Shipped quickly and arrived in pristine condition. The plate installation was pretty straightforward with all holes lining up perfectly. What I like most is the ease and convenience of adding/removing the arms. We have approx. 17k miles towing a Wrangler Unlimited behind a class A rv and have not had a single issue. I am extremely pleased with this purchase. 572737

RM-521448-5 Review: I have a 2017 Jeep Wrangler and needed a way to hook it up to my 1991 Hawkins Diesel Pusher Motorhome. The etrailer staff was very helpful in helping me purchase the correct system. I like not having anything extend beyond the front bumper when not being towed. I purchased this base plate for my jeep unlimited. Installation was straight forward following the included instructions. The only change I made was to shorten the mount for the electrical connector to keep it back closer to the bumper. It looks good and barely noticeable. Shipping was fast from eTrailer as have all other products I have purchased from them. I recommend eTrailer frequently. 625370

Very pleased with the fit and finish of the EZ5 that I installed on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The directions need to be updated a bit as there were two brace plates not shown but easy enough to figure out. I connected my RoadMaster tow bar, a Falcon 5250, to the EZ5 base. The tow bar, I bought from Etrailer years ago, has been used on my last 5 Jeeps that I have towed behind my motorhomes. The base plate attachments seem to change from year to year to fit the Jeeps. There are several nice YouTube videos on the installation process. 533809

Great design. Very tight fit. Not a single person job. I had to get my son to help and together we were able to get it over the frame. Once in place it went together pretty easy. After having a hitch with a cross bar this one is much easier and quicker to set up for the motor home. 502223

I had to cut more of the rock guard than the video indicated, which was not much of a problem. Most other hitches and base plate I have used have fit better than this one...but it worked. I've got about 1000 miles towing so far with no problems.... 494989

I have use this now for 3mouths being a full time RV'er , I love not having the cross bar to deal with! On the installation instruction the trimming of the rock guard could better and on my 2011 Wrangler I had to drill two 1/2" holes for the lower bolts up thru the cross bar? 452259

Love this product. Installed it in about 20 minutes. Used my simple SmittyBuilt Tow bar from my old '77 CJ-5 and Pulls my stock 2014 JEEP like its not even there. Would recommend this to anyone that wants to flat tow their Jeep. 409183

2015 Unlimited. Absolutely no issues with this system. Towed 15k miles last year and only will say that it's not very easy separating your vehicle on unlevel ground. Only once have I been struck on a slope trying to get the pins out. With planning or a second person it can be worked pretty easy. It's not a true issues with the system but just a lesson learned. Well made and a great investment. 379777

Roadmaster always makes a quality product. This was easy to install, especially with the etrailer help videos, they take a lot of the guessing out of the equation and are extremely helpful. Installed in about 2 hours and was very easy and I'm not extremely mechanically inclined. I would definitely recommend this product. 344624

Installed on a 2016 JKU to be towed behind my RV. This is the second one we have installed and it went on in a snap. We also installed a break away and it bolted right on the prewelded tab. Everything fit snugly and was done in about 20 min. As always etrailer provides top notch service. 342975

I said in the review that you need to be a bit handy with automotive tools, but that comment was for the review of the tow bar. The tow bar is simple to use and install. This product is where the "a bit handy" part comes into play. Not difficult to install, just have to be mechanically inclined. Really a beefy bracket assembly. I have great confidence that everything will stay attached and hold up well. 338462

I ordered my tow bar bracket kit RM-521448-5 for my 2016 Jeep Wrangler Limited from e-trailer and I received it a few days later, actually a day earlier than estimated. It was just like it was advertised. I was able to install in about 2 hrs, maybe a little more but not much. Love the look on the Jeep. It is totally functional and easy to hook up. I would recommend it to anyone needing the tow bracket. Thanks e-trailer. 323375

Ask the Experts about this Roadmaster Base Plates
Do you have a question about this Base Plate?

  • What do I Need to Flat Tow a Jeep Wrangler JK with Factory Bumper
  • To flat tow your Jeep Wrangler JK behind your motorhome, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, tail light wiring harness, and a supplemental braking system. Depending on the year of your Wrangler, you may also need a Brake-Lite Relay, # RM-88400, (2012, 2013, 2015-2018) or a Stoplight Switch, # RM-751452 (2007-2011, 2014). For your base plates and tow bar, I recommend using the Roadmaster Direct Connect Base Plate Kit, # RM-521448-5 for 2010-2018 or # 1429-3 for 2007-2009,...

  • Difference Between Roadmaster EZ4 and EZ5 Base Plates for 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • Both the Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit # RM-521448-4 and EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-521448-5 will fit on your 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The primary difference between the two designs is the way they attach to the tow bar. The EZ5 does not use the quick-connect crossbar which provides a cleaner look, but prevents you from using some accessories that mount to the crossbar such as a Rock Guard like the Roadmaster # RM-4000. If you are at all interested in using a rock guard or protective...

  • Flat Towing 2018 Jeep Wrangler JLU Rubicon With Bumper That Has Roadmaster Tow Bar Bracket Kit
  • The Roadmaster Nighthawk Tow Bar # RM-676 is a great choice for your new 2018 Jeep Wrangler JLU Rubicon; it will attach to the Roadmaster Tow Bar Bracket Kit on your Rock Hard Aluminum 4x4 Front Bumper and has integrated LED lights as well as a plug and safety cables so it offers the most convenience among the tow bar options. For a wiring kit to operate your Jeep's lights, I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 4-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15247 or to add a 6-way plug, the...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2017 Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler
  • The 2017 Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler uses the standard front bumper so the base plate kit part # RM-521448-5 would fit and work well. Also this would be compatible with the Roadmaster Falcon # RM-522 too. The rest of your parts would be great options too. The SMI Kit part # SM99251 is one of our installers favorites. The safety chains part # RM-643 and tow bar lighting kit part # HM56200 will work well too. I have included a couple of helpful links to our articles on flat towing...

  • Difference Between Roadmaster EZ5 and EZ4 Base Plates For 2016 Jeep Wrangler
  • The difference between the EZ4 Base Plate kit part # RM-521448-4 and the EZ5 kit # RM-521448-5 is that the EZ4 uses twist-lock drawbars while the EZ5 uses drawbars held in place by pins and doesn't require the use of a crossbar. I would go with the EZ5 if it were me since not having to use the crossbar is just one less thing to worry about. In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle....

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sport
  • First let's start with a base plate confirmed as a fit for your 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sport. For that you'd want the Roadmaster EZ5 part # RM-521448-5 which is a confirmed fit. I attached an install video for this kit for you to check out as well. In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. For safety cables you can use #...
