  • Works at any speed
  • Warns off many types of animals

Although you enjoy the great outdoors, you don't want your vehicle to experience any close encounters with wildlife. Unlike typical, wind-activated whistles, the electronic Deer Alert works at any speed. It can be triggered by a dash-mounted switch, by the ignition, or by activation of the high beams. Its unique sound is effective on a wide variety of animals and over an 1,100 foot range. The device is weatherproof and resists clogging by dirt, debris and grime from the road.

Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert

Hi there, travelers. Today we're gonna be taking a look at Hopkins Electronic Deer Alert. Hopkins Electronic Deer Alert is going to provide an audible signal to alert them of your presence so hopefully that they don't run out in front of you and cause any type of collision. And it is a fairly large, loud device. Unlike your deer whistles, which most people can't hear, this one is gonna be audible. So I feel like it's probably gonna work for other wildlife than just deer.

We'll go ahead and turn it on here so you can hear what it sounds like. Now we did wire it up to the ignition switch, this way the customer can't forget and accidentally leave it on overnight. It is pretty loud. I think that's probably not gonna happen, but it's always better to not come out to a dead battery in the morning. So we'll turn our key on there.

It also comes with a switch, so if you wanted to wire it up on a switch, and I highly recommend that you do since it is so loud, you don't want this to just run the whole time you're driving probably. Let's go ahead and turn it on here so we can hear what it sounds like. And there you go, you can actually hear this dear alarm. It's mounted up at the front. Let's get a little bit closer so we can take a look at it and hear it going off.

So here we have our deer alert here at the front. It is just held in place with cable ties. You do get cable ties included with it, and you can hear it is pretty loud, it's pretty audible. As long as this unit is on, it's just going to repeat this over and over. So if you are in some backwards areas where you're wanting to make sure that all the wildlife is aware of your presence so they don't just accidentally walk out in front of you, this thing is definitely gonna produce some noise for you.

Now included with your kit, you are gonna get the switch that we saw inside the dash there as well as the alarm here that's going off. You do also get a mounting bracket if you wanted to use that for your switch. Our customer wanted it integrated in the dash, so we did that for him there, but you do get a bracket with a couple of screws to mount it up on the bottom side. So that's nice. It's a nice sturdy bracket. Now, as far as fastening your connectors together for your wire to hook it up, it does come with wire nuts. And I do not recommend using wire nuts with an automotive application. A lot of vibrations, the nut could potentially come off. You've got an exposed wire at that point. It's really just not the best connection, moisture can get inside of here very easily as well, which can lead to corrosion. So, I highly recommend not using those. And I also recommend using ring terminals and but connectors. And that completes our look at Hopkins Electronic Deer Alert..

The product worked great - for about 2 months and the started working intermittently. Now it doesn't work at all.

by:

Good product, Great service. I'm impressed.

by:

Best price for the item. excellent service, would order from here again

by:

Ordered 2 products from 2 companies. Etrailer had the product here before the other company has shipped.

by:

The product functions just fine, but whether it really distracts deer I don't know. I live in very high deer populated area and since I installed the deer alert, I have had very few close encounters. I have seen them raise their heads and look.

by:

Easy to install. The hardest part was getting my hands behind the grill to mount the transducer.

by:

Very PleasedThe product was exactly what I was looking for & the speed of the delivery really surprised me.
In the future, I'll start my search with etrailer.com.

by:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PROMPT SERVICE,AND CONCERN WITH
THE ORDER IPLACED WITH ETRAILER. THE PRODUCT IS EXCELLENT! AGAIN THANK YOU!

I love it! Purchased 2. 1 for my wife and the other for me.
I have only had it installed for a week and a half on our cars and am seriously thinking about getting 1 all family members.
First handed I have noticed that deer are alerted when I am near.
I have also noticed that dogs are alerted and raccoons also.
This does not work well for geese.
This works great on alerting people also.
Gets their attention.
I decided to use a wireless pushbutton on off switch to a relay for mine. Saves time in trying to find a way through the firewall.
The hardest part in wiring was trying to find a circuit that turns off when the car is off.

That is super neat Jerry! I might have to get one for my vehicle as well.

So far all is good with this deer alert. Installed on my SUV vehicle and I cannot hear it while driving and tunes are playing. (I installed LED indicator light so that I know the alert is on).

I have used a competitor's deer alert on my motorcycles (2002 on, after hitting deer and the last 6 years on my Mazda MX-5) after hitting a deer on my brand new motorcycle in 2002. I have found that the alert is very effective after meeting up with many deer/elk/moose in my travels over the last two decades..

Things, I like about the Hopkins Trailblazer Deer Alert vs. competitor's alert: Louder- "Chirpy noise" that I think will be even more effective in alerting animals./ Easily installed behind grill ( at least in my SUV) / Appears to be weather proof so no worries about carwashes / Approx. 25% of the cost of competitor's alert.

Tip: I purchased a wireless switch else where and wired into circuit to activate the Alert saving me much time on installation as there was no need to run wires into the cabin for switch as per instructions. Highly recommend as this was a $10 addition.

Giving this alert a 4 of 5 rating, only because it is new (one week after installation) and I have yet to encounter any deer/moose/elk in my travels. I will update on my experiences as I do put faith in these devices - perhaps no "bullet-proof", but certainly effective.

Have not installed yet but does not seem cheaply built

by:

Although not yet installed, the product is much the same as the much more expensive hornet. Have had the hornet operating for seven years until the undercarriage signal module broke off. It is advantageous to mount the "module" under the hood. Thank you!

Guys and gals. The Trailblazer Deer Alert is a very effective tool at letting deer know that you're approaching. For those not familiar, it's like a train whistle warning humans so we don't get startled and panic. This is the warning for deer. When you finally get to them, they'll all be looking your way, it's kind of weird, but now they dont scatter. It makes it safer to avoid them when they stay put. Each of my 3 family cars have it! Easily wire this to your fog lights, etc. Safe driving.

Very good!

by:

I rounded a curve in the road to find a deer froze in the left lane looking for where the sound was coming from. As I approved it back of the road like a scolded dog its back to me trying not to be seen. Based on that experience I think it works!

by:

the wiring of unit to vehical is troublesome for me. IF wiring into high beam of head lights, what about deer in the day time?
i have hit several deer, most of the ones you hit you don't see until they contact your car. I don't like just leaving it on all the time, how long would it last? It also states that it transmits 105FT? At 60 MPH thats no advance warning. I have looked into a togel switch that would lightup when unit is on.

Installed the Trailblazer this past weekend 7/6/14 and was very pleased with the audible alert. I drive home after working second shift in heavily wooded areas and see deer on many occasions. This past Tuesday I saw two deer in different locations and both of them headed into the woods when they heard the Alert. Last night I noticed one standing on the edge of the woods on my left - he looked up and also headed back into the woods. This product really works and I highly recommend it to anyone driving in rural areas at night. You have another satisfied customer.

I have retired from work so I no longer make the 1 hour commute home after midnight on weeknights . But I still use the alert when driving at night an it still works fine. I bought a pick up so now I am in the market for a wireless infrared back up camera and back up sensor combination for collision avoidance please email me when this product becomes available. Would also like to have a night vision camera on front of the vehicle as an option for night driving in rural areas. Have a great weekend !

by:

Seems to work well.

by:

Not only have I not hit any deer or seen any cross the road in front of me since I installed this on my vehicle, I have also installed one at my garden plot and have not had any problems with deer in my garden since. Before that, there were deer tracks all over the place.

How did you adapt this for your garden? Prefer to use a 110v outlet. Thanks

You would need to utilize an AC/DC converter. Something like a simple two wire charger for a cell phone could work. Make sure to use something with enough amperage to support the Deer Alert and that you know which wire is ground.

by:

I have used the deer alert for over 10 years, I have one on my Harley and both of my vehicles, when turned on, and when deer are present, you can see them stop in their tracks, works great, I have bought them for family and friends

by:

I have had the electronic deer alerts in the past, and have full confidence in them, recently I have ordered more of them to install on other vehicles, they come with everything needed for easy installation, also i9n the past month I have had on four seperate occasions where I can testify that they actually do detere deer and other animals from running out in front of your vehicle, Iprefere to wire them up to the toggle switch provided so they can be turned on and off at will, unlike the whistles that only work from 30m.p.h. and up these work all the time. GREAT PRODUCT!

by:

I love this alert...it really makes the deer pay attention to what is going on around them and have stopped many of them from tagging my car. The driver is also responsible for what is going on while driving. So with both the driver skills and the deer alert accidents can be avoided.

by:

As always I received exactly what I ordered in a timely fashion. When I'm looking I always open etrailer.com first and 9 out of 10 times that is as far as I have to go. I definitely recommend etrailer.com to my friends, keep up the great work

by:

arrived quickly; hardest part was attaching it behind the grille; hope it works!

  • Operation and Sound of Deer Alert and Will it Bother a Dog Inside the Vehicle
I actually made that video to demonstrate the sound the deer alert # HM27512VA makes. I define it as an echoing chirp. It chirps about 4 times, the first is the loudest, and then gets only slightly quieter with each chirp after that. Then it repeats as long as it is on. It will make noise as long as there is power to it so you would probably want it on a switch. You would not have to keep turning it on and off. It is probably not going to bother your dog since it will be in the vehicle...

  • What Does the Hopkins Electronic Deer Alert Sound Like
I suppose when describing the sound, everyone will have a different idea of what they think it sounds like. So rather than giving you my opinion only, I made a video so you could hear it for yourself. To me, it is like an echoing chirp.

  • What Circuit to Tap Into to Install the Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert # HM27512VA
Basically you will want to look for a circuit that sees 12 volts when the vehicle is running an none when the vehicle is off. Common circuits are radio, ignition, traction control switch, power antenna. Another way to wire the Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert # HM27512VA would be to wire it to the high beams circuit so that it activates when you turn your brights on.

  • Will Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert Scare Away Aggressive Dogs For Bicyclist
The Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert, part # HM27512VA may startle a dog the first time or two that you activate it, but I am not sure if I would rely on it solely for defense from an aggressive dog. You would need a 12V power source on your bike and that would add additional weight which would not be good when being chased by any animals. The alarm has a chirping sound you can hear if you want to check out the attached video.

  • Installation of Hopkins Trailblazer Deer Alert
The Trailblazer Deer Alert # HM27512VA is a fairly easy install for any skilled mechanic. Most of it is basically routing and connecting wiring which can take time but isn't too complicated. However, depending on your vehicle it could take some temporary removal of existing parts to mount the device. One thing that can make the install easier and take less time is to not use the switch and wire the alert to an ignition source. This will make the alert sound constantly when the vehicle...

  • Will Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert # HM27512VA Work for Moose
While the Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert, # HM27512VA, is primarily marketed as a deer alert, it will also work to ward off other animals such as dogs, cats, moose, honey badgers, ocelots and other animals that frequently cross roads. Since this unit is electronic, it works at any speed and has a 1/4 mile range.

  • Can the Switch for the Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert be Installed Inside of the Vehicle
First, you can install the switch for the Hopkins Trailblazer Deer Alert, # HM27512VA, in the cab of the vehicle. You would just need to route the wires that lead from the switch to the alert through the firewall to the alert. The only restriction is the length of the wire. You may need to extend the switch wires if they do not reach from the alert to the inside of the vehicle. This installation method may require drilling through the firewall if the wires cannot be routed through an existing...

  • Is Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert Weatherproof Enough to be Used on a Motorcycle
The deer alert is weather resistant enough to be used on a motorcycle. But, I advise that you protect it from the elements as much as possible. Deer will not discriminate between passenger vehicles and motorcycles, so if you can mount and install it on the bike then it would be a good idea. I have a co-worker here who had a friend get hit by a deer while riding so it can happen.

  • Where Should the Deer Alert Be Installed on a Vehicle
You would want to mount the alert in a safe area behind the grill of your vehicle that will prevent it from getting direct exposure to the weather, but you also want it to be pointed forward so that the sound of the alert is directed out beyond the front of the vehicle. I know this is not as specific as you would like, but due to how different most vehicles are there really is not one specific way to do it. You will need to take a look at the front of your vehicle and decide what you think...

The Hopkins Trailblazer Electronic Deer Alert # HM27512VA has some really good customer reviews and should work well on your motorcycle as long as you can mount it to the front in some way. We don't have a waterproof switch, but we do have the Pollak Toggle Switch Rubber Boot -15/32"-32 Thread # PK25370 most people use for these switch applications to combat rain.
