Question:
How long should the axle be for a 6 ft wide trailer

For a 6 foot wide trailer I recommend the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System with Hubs - 5 on 4-1/2 - Regular Tires - 2,000 lbs # A20RS545. This system will allow you to simply attach the assembly to the frame and then use a 2 inch square bar between the assemblies in the integrated holes. If you have a cross brace at the axle location, this bar (not included) is not needed. This will give you the perfect fit on your frame and will extend the wheels to the outside of the frame. These assemblies have the integrated suspension so nothing else is needed.
If you are looking for a thru axle, then the Dexter Trailer Idler Axle w/ Hubs - EZ-Lube - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 72" Long - 2,200 lbs # 20545I-EZ-72-10 will be the best fit. However, this will give you spring centers at 58 inches apart and the wheels will then only stick out about 2-1/2 inches on each side. So you would need to make room in the frame design for the tire backspacing of about 4 inches for clearance.
With either option I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR D # AM35354. If you are building a trailer and use the thru-axle style, then I recommend the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs - 1-1/2" Front, 1-1/4" Rear # APS2 and then for your leaf springs # e66SR and U-bolt kit # APUBR-10.
I've attached a couple articles to assist as well as some videos.
