You will need a couple of items to hard wire the brake controller to your 1996 Dodge Ram 1500.
If you do not have a 4-way connector at the rear of your truck you will need to install the Tow Ready T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118329, to get a 4-flat connector at the rear of your vehicle.
You will then need to hardwire the brake controller to your vehicle with the # ETBC7 kit. I have attached a drawing that shows the wiring diagram when installing the # ETBC7. The installation instructions are linked at the right.
The black wire from the harness is for the 12 volt power and will connect to the red wire with a black tracer on the truck. The red wire is the stop light wire and needs to connect to the white wire with a tan tracer on the truck located at the top of the brake pedal. The white wire on the harness is the ground and connects to the black wire on the truck, and the blue wire on the harness is for the brakes and connects to the blue wire coming from the # ETBC7.
You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to check the wires by function.
I have attached links to some helpful articles and an installation video you can check out.
