Could you help me understand the cost and how much work would be involved with adding electric brakes to my 2010 Aluma Trailer? Thanks.

The entire process and required components for adding electric drum brakes to a trailer are outlined in the article that is linked at right.

If the trailer has no brakes now you will need to add professionally installed brake mounting flanges (or to replace your axles with new ones that include the flanges); you'll need at least two electric drum brake assemblies (which are paired left and right); you'll need to select hub and drum assemblies that are compatible with your spindles (by matching bearing numbers), that have the same bolt pattern as your existing wheels and that match the size of the brakes you choose; you will need to wire the trailer with a connector and wiring to support the brake function; and you will need a brake controller such as the popular Tekonsha P2 # 90885 as well as an install kit for your vehicle. You will also need to install and wire brake lights on the trailer.

Also, note that aluminum trailers can pose a challenge for electric brakes since the trailer's frame may not be as electrically conductive as a steel-framed trailer; this can mean additional ground wiring is needed to allow for proper operation of the electric brakes.
