Question:
How wide is the u bolt at the widest point? I assume it is wider that 3-1/16. I bought the 12-1/4inch u bolt and its too long, the threads are not long enough to tighten down the rim, The 3-3/4inch width is a good fit for the bolt pattern. I want to verify the 8-3/8inch u bolt is 3-3/4inch wide. Thanks

The CE Smith Spare Tire Carrier part # CE22007Z-11050-2 has the same dimensions as the longer version that you already tried part # CE22011Z-11050-2 except shorter so yes, the wider portion of the u-bolt will be 3-3/4 inches and the narrower portion will be 3 inches.
I attached a picture of the longer U-bolt for you to check out that has the dimensions listed.
